AJC's "30 football teams in 30 days" series on spring football
(Note: We love our high school football in Georgia. This is part of our “30 football teams in 30 days” series — with quick hits on top teams across the metro area and state during spring football practice. What about spring sports? Will the third year be the charm for Pebblebrook?
This season, the Falcons will under the direction of coach Randall Smith for the third year in a row. The Mableton school has made rapid progress under Smith, going from 3-7 in 2008 to barely missing the state playoffs with a 6-4 record last year.
What are the goals this spring? “To work on our execution as a team,” Smith told the AJC. “These young men have been in our system for two years now and have a better understanding of our schemes, so we play to move at a faster pace this spring that we have the past couple of years.”
Pebblebrook is building this year’s team around its defense:
Spring Game: 2 p.m., May 8
Spring practice dates: Now-May 8
Last year’s record: 6-4
Starters lost: 10

Coach Smith has done a good job of building a solid program at the Brook, but how are they going to respond to being bumped up to 5A? Also, are they at a disadvantage because they are a performing arts magnet school and lets be honest, most of the 500 or so kids that go there aren’t going to be playing football for the Falcons

Looking forward to My Forest Park Panthers playing in their new.region. Got to meet the new HC for the first time. He seem like he’s ok. Had them boys excited to be in the gym. It reminded me of when I played in Griffin with bears. It was hyped up in there like never before.

East Paulding lost some good players and more importantly, some very good coaches. Time will tell, but some think the Raider ship is sinking. I’m not saying it is but challenging for a state title is still far-fetched, even after dropping down to AAAA- more than a couple of blowout losses last season and even lost to the worst Harrison team ever. Might challenge for a region title now that they’re no longer playing the Etowahs, Woodstocks and McEacherns.

Pebblebrook was in AAAAA last year. They were in the same region as Newnan, East Coweta, Creekside & Westlake. This region does not seem as strong with McEachern being the only AAAAA playoff team.

To the Camden Co. Wildcat, one of these days they are going to have to build a 2nd high school in Camden Co. Many schools would love to be the only show in their county so they can dress out 200- plus kids and cherry pick the best.

@ M Byrd. Imagine What clayton county has to deal with when it has like 6 high schools and like 4 others bordering our county line. And with the no child left behind law, my FP Panthers have been in a rut thats hard to get out of with kids transferring in their Jr. Sr. yrs, to neighboring schools.
