Kentucky's John Calipari is charging fast and furiously after the AJC's Mr. Georgia Basketball (AP)
*Memphis is latest to offer (click here)
In the short span of seven days, the AJC’s Mr. Georgia Basketball has turned into one of the hottest names in college basketball.
Georgia Tech, UGA, and Alabama have offered scholarships to Westlake High’s Marcus Thornton, who was officially granted a release from his letter-of-intent with Clemson last Friday.
Kentucky coach John Calipari has expressed heavy interest in Thornton, along with representatives from Texas and Florida. There is also speculation that Tennessee, Michigan, LSU and Auburn, among others, will also join the recruiting race. (Note: See Monday night’s updated list at the bottom).
“We’re very surprised by all the attention,” said Thornton’s father, Billy. “People told us to anticipate it, but you don’t really know what is going to happen. It has been very overwhelming, and we feel very blessed.”
The 6-foot-7 Thornton had a much lower profile when he committed to Clemson before his junior season, and then signed with the Tigers over Wake Forest and Maryland last November.

Will Hewitt take advantage of second chance? (AJC)
Thornton’s Q rating went off the charts after a monster senior season. He averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds while leading Westlake to the state championship game in Georgia’s largest classification. Also, Thornton is very attractive to scouts as an honor student with a 3.7 GPA.
Here are tidbits from the conversations between a few colleges and Thornton’s family:
Thornton has had a good relationship with Alabama’s Anthony Grant since his coaching days at Virginia Commonwealth. He is also waiting to see who will be Clemson’s next coach. Thornton only requested his release after Clemson’s Oliver Purnell resigned to take Depaul’s head coaching job last week. Purnell was a major reason why Thornton picked the Tigers.

Next to offer? (AJC file)
“Marcus is intrigued by a lot of big-time coaches expressing interest,” his father said. “He had his mind absolutely set on Clemson, and he’s still a little disappointed that (Purnell) left. Not to say he won’t end up going to Clemson, because they are very much in consideration.
“Right now, the (recruiting process) is like being a kid in a candy store. By the same token, we’re ready to move forward with everything so Marcus can begin preparing for the next stage of his life.”
What’s next for Thornton? He will come up with a list of his top schools by the end of the week, and then set up either recruiting trips or in-house visits during the next NCAA contact period, which is April 16-21.
Click here to go to video of Thornton.
Updated at 11 p.m. Monday: As expected, the colleges have been offering scholarships at a dizzying pace on Monday. Thornton’s current offer sheet consists of Kentucky, Florida, Texas, Michigan, Auburn, UTEP, along with the other four mentioned earlier — Georgia Tech, UGA, Alabama, and Clemson. Thornton is anticipating conversations with Memphis and Tennessee on Tuesday.
Marcus has already agreed to accept in-home visits with Kentucky, Georgia Tech, and UGA in two weeks, and still deciding among other schools.
Check back with the AJC for more updates.

Hmmm surprised Calipari isn’t promising him a lump sum of cash. That is how he operates. He breaks every rule then moves on with his massive bonuses to leave the schools and students to pay the price. Calipari is a criminal. Just ask Memphis and UMASS what they think of him…

How things can change so quickly for a young man. ONe thing you have to admire about basketball prospects, once they commit to a program they generally do not change their minds, so unlike football. Marcus committed to Clemson early, turning down interest from other schools. Now he has a chance to do it all over, or better yet, he has a chance to do what he didn’t the first time around. Maybe CMF can take advantage of this new opportunity.

If he’s a “one-and-done”, then what difference does it make? But if he will use that 3.7 GPA to go for a degree, then he will become very valuable. The NBA (Calipari’s selling point) is ruining a lot of futures.

@Captain, it’s unfair to say “he has a chance to do what he didn’t the first time around.” UGA didn’t offer him until now. He was a very low profile player coming into his senior season, from what I understand, and then he blew up. If UGA ends up with Thornton or Polee it would have to be considered a huge coup. I hope it happens more than anybody, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Thornton’s choice is real simple. If he wants a party school with absurd degrees that are meaningless, it’s UGA. If he wants a quality education where he’ll learn self-discipline, he’ll choose Georgia Tech. That’s all he needs to know.

I have never figured out why any kid would go out of state if he/she can get a free ride in state at a major school. If you go to that school and do well then some of the boosters will always give you a job when you finish. If you go out of state then you can forget about coming home.

The majority of Dawg fans love to bash the other team no matter who it is rather than explain how much better their school experience here than others.
Always easier to throw rocks at Cal and Tech…truth is, Georgia and Tech were slack in their recruitment of someone in their own state. Throw Trae Golden in there as well, who went from Ohio State to Tennessee and has played in this state for 4 years.
That shows you the lack of draw Georgia and Tech have to local players. It is truly not good to let some of the best in the state leave and not be able to convince them to stay home and leave a legacy.
And please someone tell me that EVERY coach in this state is not telling this caliber of a player the NBA shouldn’t be a factor in your decision. Them fulfilling their potential shouldn’t be part of the equation huh?
Pure ignorance.

FWIW, I don’t think Cal has an advantage in this recruitment anyway. They are getting in way too late to be significant.
All Clemson has to do is bring in a coach that will show MT that he is the major factor to their next season. They have to make a splash with MT and his family. Good luck to wherever he ends up and I hope he reconsiders and still heads to Clemson. That would say alot about his character to keep his LOI intact.

The lure of the NBA is what’s killing futures. Daniel Orton is a prospect but is very, very raw. How many NBA teams will want to wait on him to develop? Hasheem Thabeet, who was a very high draft pick and decently polished in college was sent down to the D-League. Orton’s not even on third of the player that Thabeet is at this point.
NBA contracts are nice. But only if you get one. Preferably more than just that one.

Kentucky definitely has a shot because its an elite program and can offer immediate playing time. HE would fit good at Georgia too. Though he is being recruited by TEch, but seems like they have similar wing players in Oliver and Rice, so he wouldnt get the playing time. So in the end, I think it comes down to Georgia and Kentucky with the Dawgs having a slight edge because of proximity to home.

Why would anyone think your back when you can’t win it all with five first round picks in a less than stellar year as far as talented teams are concerned. Six your assistant coach is a drunk. Seven Cal will be caught cheating sooner than later and if you think you are back you will soon be the laughing stock of the NCAA

Several of you have turned this into a calipari bash. You say he is a criminal yet the NCAA has found him not guilty at either school. All he does is win 30+ games per year and is in at least the elite eight if not the final four or championship game. Why would anyone listen to Bob Knight? Cal wins at a higher level than whoever your coach may be. He wins in recruiting, he wins games and that is what makes you mad. So if not this guy then another 5 star player will be wearing blue. I pull for all sec teams and hope each school is competitive and this young man seems to be a player that will help whatever team he chooses. So hope your coach wins a recruiting war against the best coaches in the land. Just be an sec school.

Funny how no one knows what they are talking about.
Find proof that Cal has ever paid a player … In fact find proof that he has ever even been accused of a recruiting violation.
Guess what you won’t find it because he hasn’t …
Camby accepted money his jr year at UMass from an agent, not the school or cal. Not a recruiting violation.
Rose didn’t take his own test, even though the NCAA said at first he did and cleared him to play.
Both things that Coach Cal had nothing to do with.
If you ask the NCAA, and check because UK did before hiring him, then Cal is one of the few coaches to never be accused of a recruiting violation by the NCAA. They told UK he was clean as they come.
So get your story straight if you want to hate on UK!

I’m a UK fan, but there are no winners on this comment thread. It is like tall kindergarten.
This kid has options at a lot of good places. UK needs bodies as well as talent, so I think UK has a pretty good chance. It won’t be b/c UK cheats though. It will be b/c we can give the kid an education and, if he develops, a great shot at the NBA. Which is what a good basketball program is supposed to do.

Keep dreaming UK fans. You have a cancer on your campus that will soon eat at the heart of your program worst than the infamous point shaving incident which led to the death penalty your program once received. Your APR has taken a major hit with the first class. Another class or two of one and dones and your APR will take such a hit that you soon may not have enough scholarships available to even field a team. Every one and done from this past class counts against your APR. Every player Cal ran off if they fail to graduate at their other school, counts against your APR. Every player who fails to make their grades thinking they were a one and done, counts against your APR. The time bomb is ticking as we get closer and closer to the time limit for these players to get their degrees. But don’t worry by that time Cal will have moved on to another dream job.

Cal has one class that leaves the potential that 5 guys get drafted in the first round, and all that brings is bashing? I have to say any program in Georgia would love to have this problem. It hasn’t ever happened before and the NBA is what is creating this problem. Ready or not, these kids are looking for ways to get drafted in the first round.
Call it as you wish, but they are looking for the coach who will get them the ability to be mentioned among the top players and who will get their game spotlighted.
What’s wrong with competing against the best players every day? You either accept the challenge to practice against the elite (which is what these kids can do potentially every day in Kentucky) and you are supported by the largest fan base in the country.
If the top SEC team comes calling, you listen and weigh your options. Calipari has 8-9 slots currently open. That basically means the playing time is up for grabs and who wants to start the year off in Maui as a throw-in bonus?
Please Georgia fans, present something that makes sense to this thread instead of:
- Cal is the biggest cheater and you will be sorry.
- UK will be on probation in 2 years.
- UK cheats the best in basketball.
- Even Coach Knight says so…….please, listen to Coach Knight. He is the ambassador for what is good about college basketball.
Please tell me how you missed this kid until his senior year. Please make the excuse that it was because of a new coach coming in. Where is Georgia mentioned in any of his choices? Has he said a visit from Fox is in place?
If you don’t like it, tell Coach Fox and Mr. Evans to get out there and find these recruits a little earlier in the process.
Same issue with Tech; how does this caliber of a player leave the state of Georgia? Amazing.
Does anyone want a list of all the kids who found out-of-state schools more appealing than Georgia or Tech? The talent is amazing here. When are you teams going to wake up and quit letting Memphis, UConn, Michigan State! and Kentucky from taking your players? Where’s Maya Moore today?

Kentucky isn’t back. When they win something call me. Until then you are still another school. Hey good luck with ur coach. I know I wouldn’t want him. Again don’t want to by UK, it’s just you guys haven’t done anything yet. U paid a coach about five million a year to get u to an elite eight to only be embarrassed. I know I wouldn’t want that. Look at Butler. They paid their coach less than ten percent of your coach and was one basket away from winning it all. That is the school or coach I would want right now. Cal want’s this kid for depth, plus he’ll be a kid that will be there for 4 years and a solid contributor by his Jr./Sr. year. You can’t have all one and dones, last year was a fluke, they never expected Bledsoe and Orton to get 1st round looks. Actually, going into last year they figured Cousins was at least a two year player.
UK is looking at possibly getting Knight, Leslie, Lamb, Jones, Kanter, and Poole. That class alone will make this the #1 class in the country, players like Thornton and maybe Terrence Ross are just fillers, UK only has 4 returning players. Don’t look for Thornton to get minutes (if he came to UK) over Jones, Leslie, or even Miller.

@ douchey Kentucky fans:
Calipari can’t coach. He’s always won with superior talent, not his coaching acumen. There’s a reason that Butler and Duke played in the NC game instead of UK. It’s because those teams are well coached…neither had as much talent as Kentucky, yet Kentucky couldn’t get past WVU…a team which Duke DESTROYED.
Calipari doesn’t know how to run a zone defense, and doesn’t know how to play against one. He’s very limited in what he can do with mid-level talent. I watched it for 9 years…he refuses to make adjustments.
9 point lead, 2 minutes to go…
0-20 on 3 point attempts and he lets his guys shoot 12 more.
He gets out-coached every time on the floor…and sometimes his talent can’t overcome it.
He’s a bad coach.

— LSUTiger sez Vince Dooley is the biggest cheater ever ???
Brilliant observation – take your Zoloft & go back to your room
Last time I checked, Vince did not coach roundball at UGA or
Auburn. But just for reference sake >> Dale Brown ??!!??
— Memphisluvsthugs apparently was not admitted to Memphis
One correct staement in here, however, Adolph Rupp – as good
as he was – didn’t care for the brothers.

GT: You have a losing record to Georgia in every sport you compete in except men’s basketball and you haven’t won in men’s basketball in Athens since the Carter administration. Your school was also founded, funded, chartered, and concieved by UGA graduates. UGA is literally and figurativley your daddy and has been for over 100 years.
Kentucky Fan’s, Georgia’s meager men’s basketball program has a better winning percentage against Kentucky, than does Kentucky’s football program against Georgia. Further, Basketball is but a rounding error compared to football at the professional, college, and high school level. Georgia is but a decision to commmit it’s vastly superior financial resources to basketball……….from being a power in basketball. Kentucky will NEVER be a power in football because they don’t have the talent nor the population and capital to keep up.
Tennessee Fan’s………….You lost to Georgia in basketball this past year with a walk on team and a first year head coach. In football, Georgia is a bigger state, with more money. UGA is bigger, better school, with more money. And the state of Georgia has a hell of alot more talent than Tennessee………You shouln’t win often verses UGA and you won’t provided their DC hire is remotely competant.
I’m a Bama Fan, but you guys are friggen clueless. And in the mean time from the only sport that matters………Roll Tide
LSU Fans are also cute

LOL at any LSU fans talking about inbred dirt road “jawga” fans. You do realize that your broke swamp of a state has more miles of unpaved, unattended roads than any other state in the south save Texas…….a state 5 times your land mass? Georgia’s GDP is also over three times that of the state of Louisiana and I’m assuming you live in Georgia because their is no industry in Corndogville. And taking shots at Dooley is interesting in that so far as I know UGA has never been on serious probation for cheating in football………….unlike Auburn or Tech or Kentucky or Florida. I’m also amused that Georgia is a has been considering they curb stomped your Tigers less than 2 years ago and you have a losing record verses them the last 10 years. When you guys post an undefeated season in the era of non-leather helmets, come talk to me. I understand UGA hasn’t had the best couple of years, but they still have a top ten football program all time. You guys make it sound like they haven’t won at all?

The sultans of probation- Bammer. Pay for play University. Why else would anyone in their right mind go to that mudhole in Alabama to play football? You inbreds keep wearing those silly ignorant “Bear” Bryant hats- those nerd helmets fit your fanbase perfectly. lolololol

Speaking of nerds- Mark Fox. lol Why wouldnt he go to Oregon or anywhere else considering he is at the graveyard of basketball? Well at least you Jawja fans have football- oh wait you guys blow in football too. How is the view looking up at Florida, LSU, Alabama, Auburn and UTenn?
