Football recruiting: UGA commitments lobby other elite prospects to be Bulldogs at G-Day game

If you’re an elite prospect, once you’ve committed early to a college, your next goal is lobby your colleagues to join you at the same school.

That was North Clayton High linebacker Amarlo Herrera, who pledged to UGA in February.

At Saturday’s G-Day game, Herrera went out of his way to make conversation with many of the top uncommitted prospects in attendance. Wesleyan offensive lineman David Andrews and Griffin safety Corey Moore, two other UGA commitments for 2011, were also preaching the Bulldogs.

“I’ve been recruiting for Georgia since I committed to Georgia,” Herrera told the AJC on Sunday.

“I think we have something very special going on at Georgia. We have new (assistants), we have a new defense, and there’s a new feeling about the program.

“If you come to Georgia, you can be part of it all. Big things are going to be happening.”

The G-Day game attracted many of the top prospects from Georgia and the Southeast: The headliners included Cartersville offensive lineman Justin Floyd, East Hall defensive end Sterling Bailey, Valdosta two-way star Malcolm Mitchell, Ridgeland cornerback Devin Bowman, Grady cornerback Damian Swann, Mitchell County wide receiver Justin Scott, North Paulding wide receiver Chris Conley, and Booker T. Washington wide receiver Zach Witchett, among many others.

Andrews said he spent most of Saturday hanging out with a pair of fellow highly-touted offensive linemen, Memphis product Hunter Long (younger brother of UGA freshman Austin Long) and Dalton’s Watts Dantzler.

“I’ve gotten to know Watts and Hunter very well through the recruiting process, and I’ve been working hard on both to consider Georgia,” Andrews said.

Who do you think will be the NEXT 2011 prospect to commit to Georgia? Make your prediction below, and explain why.

Thanks UGA for Chance Warmack, Darius Mckeller, and James Carpenter. Send us some more this year. Roll Tide. And Richt needs to sell the lake house and devote more time to the program. If he worked as hard as Saban you’d have a NC.

The purpose of going to college is having a finally result of a well paying job and career. Basically come to UGA where the coaches prepare you for a life either in the NFL Stafford #1 overall pick or go to UFA where the coach only cares about winning and doesnt even prepare his star player to compete in the NFL Tim Tebow (side arm motion and in a run-shoot shot gun offense? )

Saban has been great the past two years, but he did not invent football.

He will flame out like Padded Cell Urban soon. Remember he is not a very loyal guy. He will be offered big money one day and he will vamuse!

Tampa Gator: UGA suspends a player in a cell. You need to worry about your off balace coach and spend more time on a Florida blog.

Harold, what is your definition of average? 90 wins in 9 seasons is average? About 95% of the teams in this country are not coming up to the average.

Yes…Please, Please, Please come to Georgia! We won our only national title back in 1980 (31 years ago this season) and we have only played football for around 110 years. So come to Athens and when you are in your 80’s or 90’s we will win our second national title. Until then we guarantee you we will get you a job at Walmart or the local recreation center if you aren’t one of the 3 or 4 that can actually make the NFL.

However, if you are looking for success both on and off the field…and have coeds in bathing suits all year long – then how in the world can you say no to Florida!!! Do you lean toward guys or something???

I still don’t get it! Why would a black kid want to go to UGA? A school of 26K students with 57.6% being female is a selling point, but they are all white. There were 2679 Black students at UGA for the 2009-2010 year according to ABH article from Feb. of 2010. The Black College Experience just doesn’t work at UGA. I am not picking on the players for chosing UGA just that there are much better schools for the WHOLE College Experience and Diverse Student Body.

70,000 tons of trash and feces centers around Athens. A man hasn’t got time to crap on the streets of Atlanta, by the time you lower your pants someone has stolen them. Like I say Atlanta ain’t for everybody, but it is nice not having to clean the soles of your shoes every 10 minutes or watch the whites of some body’s rear end as nature calls.

This is to all the people that talk about the muggings around Atlanta and the TEch campus:

The majority of the muggings could be avoided if the people being mugged would use some common sense. The victims of these crime 90% of the time they are out walking on the street alone at 3 in the morning, which is just downright stupid. If these people would not walk alone or would travel in pairs it is highly doubtful that they will be mugged because most incidents are lone students

Mark Richt is a good Christian man, hands down. I have a picture of him holding my twin baby boys under each arm. I have the up most respect and admiration for the man and his family but… Is he the coach that can take us to the promised land? Sadly, no. The success he’s had at UGA would be satisfactory if say he were coaching at UK, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt or MS but not at UGA. I agree with several of the bloggers, wait until the end of the season (we’ll be lucky to match last years record) and then try to lure away Kirby Smart from Bama. This is UGA’s only hope of getting another ring.

Watts Danzler
Not only is he a good football player he is a GREAT person!
I knew his Dad and had a great amount of respect for him as a Bulldog and Man.
Watts is definetly is dad’s son and a great kid!
UGA needs a recruit like Watts that will lead not only on the field, but also be a role model for other players off the field.
Watts if you read this, your Dad is missed very much in the dalton area and no matter where you choose to play college football, you will make him very proud!

WHY PLAY FOR AN AVERAGE FOOTBALL TEAM THAT IS SINKING YEARLY LIKE GEORGIA? PLAY FOR A WINNING PROGRAM LIKE FLORIDA OR ALABAMA. THEY ALSO HAVE CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAMS. GEORGIA IS CHAMPIONS IN GOLF/TENNIS etc.
