2010 Georgia High School Basketball Tournament: You pick the state’s best player and No. 1 teams (UPDATED)

Hey, the 2010 high school basketball season is over (click on the brackets below for final results).

What are your thoughts on the 2010 season? Out of the five boys state champions, which team is the state’s best? Is it Milton? Or what about GAC? And which team is No. 1 out of all the girls champions?

Perhaps, most importantly, who is the state’s Mr. and Mrs. Basketball? Is it Wheeler’s Jelan Kendrick, the only Georgia player picked for the Parade All-America game? You may disagree, but I think not. My “lock” was Westlake’s Marcus Thornton, before he missed the state championship game with an ankle sprain from warmups. I like Fayette County’s Adam Smith, and GAC’s Malcolm Brogdon.

What about the No. 1 girl? Pick any of the NBA daughters.

Note: Stick to basketball talk. Personally insulting other commenters will not be tolerated. Thanks. - AJC Sports

@yugolf are you kiddin, Lagrange did’nt stand a chance. The only reason the game was within 7 to 10 points was because of the refs. Same thing happen against Westover the night before. Westover scored 1 FG in the fourth Quarter the rest of their points were freethrows. Lets keep it real if you are a true sports fan you would admit that Columbia was the superior team on the court last night.

@jroc Decatur just won 3 state Championships in the same year and 2 of them were won by the same school, 1 0f only 7 schools to ever do it. Columbia has been one of the best if not the best boys basketball team in Georgia the last 5 years. 3 championships, 4 finals, and 5 final fours in actuality Columbia was 3 to 4 plays away from having 5 str8 titles. Give RESPECT where RESPECT is do.
CONGRATS TO COLUMBIA BOYS AND GIRLS!!!!

@Michael Carvell You showed your true colors today your lead did not mention Columbia or Jershon Cobb. Wow ! I am starting to really wonder about you. Your love for Milton/ GAC is a indicator of something foul. But keep up the good work us folks from Decatur are used to this kind of hate.

I am a Redan girls supporter so I do not have any favorites. The #1 boys team Milton, how can you pick against so much D1 talent. Best player, Marcus Thorton, my first time seeing him was Friday night and I was so surprised at his size. He was like a man against boys, I wish that he had not hurt himself because it really affected the outcome of the game, however during warmups I checked him out and was impressed with his shooting ability and ball handling, this kid was the total package.
Best girl, Diamond Deshields, I was very impressed with her all around game and poise, can’t believe she is only afreshman.
Hey Michael how can you pick Jelan over Marcus because of the injury in the finals when Jalen did not even make it to the final four, Thorton is a beast.

Congrats to all the teams last night. Especially to my Coulumbia Eagles!!! Was it me or were the commentators making excuses for Lagrange. Oh they’re not used to the size of columbia’s players, oh the they’re not used to columbia’s speed and blah blah blah. If they were 31-0 they should be able to play well no matter what they aren’t “used” to. But the game was great. LaGrange played pretty good.

SportsFan31313 – Give me a break first you had the nerve to bring up Bradwell and Liberty county up as basketball team’s to look out for. You are a straight homer. Then you annoint Norcross girls’s the best in the state from one game. I’ll take the SWD girls who have won three straight along wth Florida bound Kayla Lewis as the best girl player in the state.

Trust me, we (LaGrange) do not need anyone making excuses for us. We win with respect and we lose with respect. We have won more than our fair share of Championships and lost enough Championship games that most schools would be satisified with playing in…Like i said, a 6′8 center flanked by two 6′5 forwards, you do what got you to the dance. The height and length were the difference in the game as well as the columbia point guard. we couldnt turn him over like we had done so many teams. he was the real MVP of the game

Go watch the movie blue chips and then you understand what Columbia basketball is all about, of course they were the superior team, they are bought players , what did you school have to do promise someone a job , free rent, free hotel stay for away games & free meals too, 7 point win with a all star team is not impresssive dude.
I agree with stiener, GHSA get control of this mess so we can have real high school championships, and how can you guys offer scholarships at a magnet school or should i say rewards program for athletes.

@ Sgt Chris
Is that your excuss height and length!!!(Bullishhh)!! You doggone right the freshman was MVP last nite. You know why because we scheduled games early in the year against other top gaurds in the nation to beat him up and dogem a lilbit, so when we played a 31-0 team he would dog them like he did. A 31-0 team who has been playin togethr since 8th grade…got sent home by a 14yr old!!! Now whos overrated losers!!!

yugolf,

you are nutts. you wanna speak on something you know for a change. its ok accept the loss. the grangers fought hard. as a grad of columbia high and a die hard fan of all columbia sports not just basketball i totally understand what columbia basketball is all about. I dont have to speculate like you all nor do i have to listen to all the hear say. I see the body of work daily and seen it for years. I’ll tell you what. take a trip down by columbia drive and see if its an attractive place to lure a family to. what kind of money do you think is in that neighborhood to offer all of the things you are talking about. we all know why it was a seven point victory….if you saw the same game i saw every time the game was getting out of control the refs tightened it up with some extremely horrible calls to keep lagrange in. you all were never close except during the first 30 secs and last minute of the game. go ahead say what you need to say to make yourself feel good. that what losers do. i’ll tell you what it was obvious that Lagrange players werent losers because they played their hearts out and never quit. I LOVE that about them. but its obvious their fans are. and dont give me this you are not a fan of lagrange because if not you would be somewhere silent like BUZZ, Zone 3, South ATL, and the rest of all the Columbia Haters. its your turn to hate you have the right to do that. while you are hating im still partying. want me to save you something? maybe i can take some of this mythical money you speak of and buy you from your team….LOSER

Great Effort form all the State Champions! There was some excellent basketball played from November to March and it’s a shame that most of the coverage comes in late February and March. I’ll looking forward to the upcoming AAU season as it may provide some matchups that are not possible in high school but I’d pay to see all of the state champs play each other.

To ALL the basketball players GREAT JOB and take a few weeks off and then get back in the gym and prepare for next season and in some cases college!!

GREAT EFFORT!

HE IS A STAR in the making…you heard it here first. 2013 MR. Basketball will come from 2106 columbia drive because it looks like the REAL 2010 winner (Jershon Cobb) is gonna get robbed of what he deserves this year. hey ask marcus thornton what he scored against us when he played us as a tenth grader while Jershon cobb gave them a double double if im not mistaken. no need to mention their names but only one went to griffin and they MOVED from griffin to decatur. im sure from where you are you cant realize that decatur is only 10 mins east of downtown atlanta. do you know how many people move to atlanta on a daily basis. it is a big city. people from all over the world move to atlanta. some just happen to be in the age range of 14-18. where are they supposed to go to school. should their life be over because their families decide to move….again you are nutts….if they moved to lagrange would lagrange coach have told them they couldnt play for the grangers because they didnt grow up in lagrange….you are reaching hard but im happy you are able to admit you are a hater. there you go talking hear say though. nice to know you were sitting in the columbia fan section. i knew deep down inside in the parts that you dont like to talk about you wanted to be an eagle.

Real Eagle 1–I will entertain your small ego for one post and one post only. when you have a 6 8 center and TWO 6 5 forwards, and LaGrange’s tallest player was only 6 5, you tell me if thats an excuse or just plain fact?? thats why columbia came out and lobbed it inside from the top of the key at the beginning of the game..so again, you tell me if thats an excuse or not…your post only confirmed what I posted earlier

enough about the recruiting its a dead issue..its going to keep going on in ALL SPORTS unless someone makes a policy against it and enforces it…until then, its basically legal..no need to beat it in the ground arguing about who recruits and who doesnt. if there are teams that do it, its not like they would openly admit to doing it, so why waste your energy debating it..

and as for the centreplex, would it be too hard to put scoreboards somewhere over each baseline?? EVERY venue I have gone to has that setup but the centreplex.

Example Arlington Country Day featured 2 kids 6-9 and 6-10 they were huge. We had to make the right moves as a team to beat them…it can be done!! We looked like a JV team compared to Arlington and Oak Hill Academy.Did we say they were to big and long, heck no. eagle 1 ,2 ,3, hawk whatever bird you are,
How does a school according to you in a neighborhood that no one would like to send there child if they could avoid doing so, afford to play a national schedule like you guys.
Now i,m going to keep this real enough 4-you, read not only sports in the ajc but also understand whats going on in your community ,
please read the following AJC headline
(Metro schools to slash again
Teacher layoffs, school closings, program cuts among options)
The avalanche began when DeKalb County school officials said last month that the system would be short $88 million in its 2011 budget. Since then, so many other shoes have dropped, it’s starting to look like a Rack Room out there)
The county anticipates a shortfall of between $88 million and $115 million; at first, the system said it would close four schools, but now says the closings may total 12 this year or next. It also has proposed deep cuts among central office staff (154) and in paraprofessionals (261).

● Total job cuts: 415

● Teaching positions cut: none

● Furlough days: 7

● School closings: 4 to 12

● Program cuts: Board members are looking at slashing magnet and theme schools and other programs.

● Class size: Will increase by one to two students per class.

● Next: The DeKalb Citizens Planning Task Force will meet Tuesday and April 13 to discuss school closings. Public hearings will be May 6 and 11, and the School Board will vote on closings May 14.

how much do you think it costs to send a team to paces IL ,AZ, etc when most schools and there programs are having hard times just simply feeding kids after ball games, you guys must have a helluava booster club program, sounds like you guys are running a prep school but hiding under GHSA rules and regulations, not hating but you need a little lesson in accounting 101.
I really don’t care if you recruit MIchael Jordan but , be proud, but don’t go sticking you chests out like Eagles when your program flies in like crows, didn’t wont to hit you guys that hard with hard core facts , but its’s obvious you guys are blind to whats really going on at Ccc Ooo Lll Uuu Mmm Bbb Iii Aaa..

Final rankings: Why did metro Atlanta win all 10?
5:28 pm March 14, 2010, by Todd Holcomb

For the first time in history, metro Atlanta teams have won every state championship in basketball.

Before asking why, let’s look at how times have changed. In the 1990s, metro teams won only 28 percent of the state basketball titles. In the last five years, metro teams have won 76 percent of the titles. In the 1980s, there were four years where metro Atlanta won ZERO state titles (1981, 1985, 1988). Metro boys teams failed to win a state title in 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1998.

Here are some things that have happened to change that (in no particular order):

1. The state’s highest classification is more than 80 percent metro Atlanta, and the Savannah schools (which still play great basketball) insist on playing in Class AAAAA with AAAA-AA enrollment. The only non-metro schools in AAAAA are either too few students or too much football.

2. Private schools are putting an emphasis on basketball and attracting top talent, both in players and coaches (Wesleyan, GAC, SWAC, Whitefield Academy).

3. Elite players in metro Atlanta are moving to schools that give them the most exposure and the best chance at a state championship. The schools that play national schedules (Milton, Wheeler, Miller Grove, Columbia, Norcross and others) are only getting richer.

4. AAU teams are making players better and more experienced, and those AAU teams are more prevalent in Atlanta than the rest of the state.

5. There are more metro Atlanta schools than ever, and they are spread throughout the classifications, giving the metro area a competitive shot to win any class.

People quit crying about height. Lagrange lost because they didn’t have a perimeter game. The same way Westlake lost to Milton and Dunwoody four year ago. You have to have one or two players that can hit a jump shot.I didn’t see a player comfortable shooting a 15 feet jump shot.

Micheal Carver, I think Columbia Girls Coach did a helluva job turning that program around in 2 years. 2 years ago all you heard about Columbia was their boys basketball team. This is her second year coaching High School Basketball and in her second year a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Trophy in 3A Girls Basketball. @yugolf try this for good sense. you just spit out all of the points i been making to you. there is no money in the area but to answer your question about how a team plays a national schedule. apparently the teams you are ranting and raving for must not be that good in the eyes of the nation because if a national tournament or a national team wants to play you they figure out how to get you up there….in short its called sponsorship. If the tournament is sponsored by a big money making company i.e. nike, bass pro shops, les swab, chik fil a, and so on and so forth those companies along with the minor sponsors of that event will get you there if they want you there bad enough. its not like playing in some small local tourney with a name like “the deep south bottom of ga christmas tourney” where you probably have to provide everything for yourself only to lose and come home with a screen printed hanes t shirt. SORRY TO SPIT THE COLD HARD FACTS TO YOU!!! but while you were researching the area you should maybe get your weight up and someone will invite you and your team to play.

Dont worry eagle 1 i had your back. dude is just bitter and still reaching i see.

WHAT?, Columbia is a MAGNET SCHOOL like Chamblee and SOUTHWEST DEKALB.Yes he probably receive special previously coming from a MAGNET MIDDLE SCHOOL in Champion Theme Middle School, because most magnet high school try and get magnet middle schoolers to come to their school, because of their strong background in academics. Just like most of the south kids receive special previous to go to north of the county for their education. You have to be invited to those national tournamments, do you honestly think the school or county is providing for these ventures. That’s insane, we don’t even have a baseball field or practice football field on our campus. The football team had to practice at our middle school this season after they were ran off from a local park and the baseball currently practices on a local park field, if we have all this money you’re referring to do you think we’d be going through this. If we were on the northern part of Dekalb county would we be going through this, probably not. Sponsorships and many fundraisers allow our school to participate in these types of tournaments, what does that have to with school closings and teacher layoffs? It’s amazing what people talk about when they’re upset about their team losing. I keep saying that during football sesaon you don’t hear any of this from us when you guys dominate, we give yall props and move on.

As you all know the #1 AAA Team was LaGrange, but its now Columbia. Go Eagle! Jershon Cobb and his teammates are the best players ever. They were focus on their game as usually. They shut down LaGrange with no problem. They have played nationally ranked teams and I feel everyone of them should be ranked. Oh and their Head Coach Phil McCrary has had nearly if not 400 wins. I would put Columbia boys against any team. They have the talent and the mind set to achieve any challenge/goal set before them and you can take that to the bank!

PS….A Very Special Shout go out to Columbia Girls, they’ve earned this. Also, they are add to the list of rare events that both the boys and girls basketball teams have become state champions for their high school.

OK..enough already about transfers and recruiting. Does anyone actually understands the rules. Yes kids do transfer more in the Atlanta area than other areas of GA, but thats simply based off the population in the area. Don’t tell me that kids in Albany, Savannah, Columbus, or Macon are not transfering from school to school, oh yeah i left out Warner Robins. GHSA rules state that a player must sit out a year if he transfers from one school to another unless there is a bonified move. (which means his family moved into the attendance zone for the new school) This is done easily in the ATL area simply because of logistics. It would be difficult for a family say in ALbany to Move to Crisp county just for basketball because of jobs and other issues. Where in ATL parents can easily move thier children and family from the attendance zone from say a Martin Luther King High School to Arabian Mountain High School. 1. because the parents don’t work near the school anyway, and 2. the schools are located within 5 minutes of each other. All the parent literally has to do is move up the street, and they are in the new attendance zone. Honestly speaking if my child played basketball and we lived in the attendance zone for Towers, but my child had a chance to play at Columbia, I would move into the attendance zone of Columbia for not only the RIch history of a Columbia basketball program, but also for the academic advantage my child would gain from attending COlumbia. Ecconomics also have a place in this, simply put parents in the Atlanta area make more money and can move. Why is everyone talking about the Atlanta Metro area programs, when what we should be looking at is the PRIVATE SCHOOLS, who can actually recruit and give scholarships to players to attend Highschool. They don’t have to play by the GHSA rules, because they are private. Programs attract players, kids want exposure. Why would i want my kid to go to towers and go on a holiday basketball tournament locally, or send him or her to Columbia and they spend go to a holiday tournament in Hawaii. B4Real…

I speak about Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute Ladies Basketball because of their winning season for the past two years, and I also speak on Region 3-AAA Liberty County Mens Basketball because of their winning season as well. Your School is AAAA. I believe that had SWD Ladies had played Bradwell Institute Ladies, they would have lost to them as well. but that neither here nor there. SWD Ladies are the State Champions and congrads goes to them. However; they Lost to Class AAAAA Norcross in the regular season. Where do you getoff saying that SWD are the best in the State when they lost to Class AAAAA State Champions Norcross? Your comments are dismissed and so are you sir.

Ms. Basketball should be Kayla Lewis of SWD! A young lady who has worked many hard years and has been instrumental in bringing 3 state championships to Southwest Dekalb! Doesn’t matter who her parents are. All that matters is they instilled character, an excellent work ethic, and an inate desire to win, both on the court and in the classroom.
