2010 Georgia High School Basketball Tournament: You pick the state’s best player and No. 1 teams (UPDATED)

Hey, the 2010 high school basketball season is over (click on the brackets below for final results).

What are your thoughts on the 2010 season? Out of the five boys state champions, which team is the state’s best? Is it Milton? Or what about GAC? And which team is No. 1 out of all the girls champions?

Perhaps, most importantly, who is the state’s Mr. and Mrs. Basketball? Is it Wheeler’s Jelan Kendrick, the only Georgia player picked for the Parade All-America game? You may disagree, but I think not. My “lock” was Westlake’s Marcus Thornton, before he missed the state championship game with an ankle sprain from warmups. I like Fayette County’s Adam Smith, and GAC’s Malcolm Brogdon.

What about the No. 1 girl? Pick any of the NBA daughters.

Note: Stick to basketball talk. Personally insulting other commenters will not be tolerated. Thanks. - AJC Sports

How hard would it be to put a simple scoreboard on the website?
I’m looking all over the high school section and can’t find word one about the AAA results. There are only 4 teams left in each division – this shouldn’t be hard.

I was at Berkmar when David Boyd coached the Tony Akins-led Patriots to a Championship game loss against Savannah. That was 12 years ago, and he won 2 state titles at Berkmar shortly thereafter. Dude has titles in 3 different decades, for 3 different schools. Time to make it 4.

It’s not correct to say Coach Boyd will not be out coached. The truth is, he won’t be out recruited. Thanks to the likes of he and Wheeler’s Lipscomb, GA high school ball has turned into an AAU league. C’mon, Milton a basketball school!?!?! Gimme a break.

@ Michael Carvell If Westlake is # 1 then how are they not the favorite. If Milton is like you said a potential National Champion ( not sure I know what that means ) then why are they not 1# in their own state Classification. Also Who did Milton play nationally ? Did they play a national schedule similar to Columbia? I don’t recall that. What are they ranked nationally? Enlighten me please. I don’t like the underlining suggestions here.

The SWAT represents tonight as Mays and Westlake (SWAT by etension) take the two top classifications. I’m not surprised because they have two of the best coaches in High School. You cannot count the totat championships, championship games and final fours for these two outstanding coaches. Talent does flow to Westlake and Darron Rogers wins with it. Floyd Mack simple coaches what is there and elevates them in that Mays environment (A Legacy to keep, an Image to Hold).

Northwest SWD game is a toss up. No upset either way in my opinion. I like the fact that NW starts 4 seniors and a junior and a senior 6th man. Plus 2 players that are 6′5″ and 6′3″. Northwest has had the toughest route to the finals and are tested. But all that might not mean jack when your playing the 2 time defenders. Good luck Lady Bruins.

Living with self just fine, thank you, bitter Go NORCROSS. You would too if you knew these very nice respectable kida who are actually good students. With very good parents. They all are high achieveing parents who want the best for their kids. Coach Boyd did not recruit them. Their families recruited Boyd – and Milton HS, the only HS in GA to receive the prestigious national Blue Ribbon School award. Royal, Dai Jon and Nolte are being recruited by Northwestern and Duke, among many other major D1’s Shannon Scott is already committed to Ohio state). You know about Duke, but in case you are not familiar with Northwestern, they are a so-so D1 team who occasionally slips into the NCAA tournament, but has unyielding academic requirements for its athletic scholarships.
So, you bitter Norcross fans get over your loss in the quarters. I understand you would have loved the upset. You are a very proud program, understandably so. Milton is simply better than you this year (and next). You know you were outplayed the entire game. If Milton could have made its intentional foul free throws, that last second play would never have happened.
Now, on to the finals. Should be a great game. I, for one do not consider this a foregone conclusion – unless Milton plays the way they did last night. In which case a poster above is correct: UGA or Ga Tech could not beat them.

@Eagle1:

I’m not a Milton fan, but let’s get real. You mention Westlake should be favorite because they ar no. 1 in state. So does that mean Lagrange should be favorite over Columbia because Lagrange is no. 1 in state. Nationally Westlake-22, Milton-41, Columbia-51, GAC-67 ranked. And as far as schedule Columbia was 6-5 in out of state schedule and Milton 5-2. I just stick to the facts, and try not to contradict myself. So according to you this means that your team Columbia should lose because Lagrange is the higher rank instate team. Don’t make no sense, somebody did mention that the playoffs is a new season. What happen during the year (head to head, records, instate or outstate play, rankings, and anything else you want to bring) goes out the door. It’s all about what you do now, and gather you should agree or if according to you, Lagrange since they are the no.1 ranked team in your classification should win it all.

NYRIC

Recruits, what recruits. I mean correct me if I’m wrong, Haven’t these kids at Milton been playing together since 8th grade. And the kid Nolte was at Milton as a freshman and now a sophomore. Now coach Boyd was recruited, but who doesn’t want the best coach at their school, if you look everybody does it accross the state, whether it’s football or any other sport.

NYRIC: Good post. Just wanted to offer this to what you said. Heard former Notre Dame coach and TV analyst Lou Holtz give a pregame talk. It was very simple and I leave this with all the players and fans for tonight. Holtz told the team: “You don’t have to be the best team in the country today, gentlemen, you just need to be the best team on the field today.” All those national and state rankings don’t mean anything at tip-off, you just need to be the best on the floor at the end of the buzzer and the rest will take care of itself. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE TEAMS TONIGHT! The whole state will be watching.

NYRIC

Thanks Crazy Hoops. Lou put it into true perspective. It’s not what you did yesterday, it’s what you do today. Most these bloggers get caught up in comparing this with that. Almost contradicting themselves without realizing (Ex: Westlake and Lagrange should win because they are no. 1’s). Bottom line: GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE TEAMS THAT HAVE MADE IT THIS FAR.

As a LaGrange alum, I’d say we should have been the underdog since the second round against Monroe, but 5 playing against one is what have the Grangers #1 so far. Weak schedule perhaps, but we do what we do against who is lined up against us. Just like everyone else, our seniors have been together since the 8th grade. Everyone who knows basket ball knows that whoever wins LaGrange vs North Hall is going to be an underdog against whoever wins the the other game. But that’s why you play the games. Anything can happen!

THE HARSH REALITY OF THE ISSUE IS WHAT NO ONE WANTS TO SPEAK ON. ALL OF THESE TEAMS REPEAT EVERY YEAR BECAUSE THEY ILLEGALLY RECRUIT. FACT: COLUMBIA HIGH HAS BEEN TO 7 STRAIGHT FINAL FOURS. I FIND IT HARD 2 BELIEVE THAT THAT MUCH NBA TALENT LIVES OFF OF COLUMBIA DRIVE IN DECATUR. MILLER GROVE HAS A NBA SIZED TEAM AND HAS BEEN TO 3 STRAIGHT FINAL FOURS IN ONLY FIVE YEARS OF SCHOOL EXSISTANCE. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THAT MANY 6′10 GUYS LIVE OFF OF COVINGTON HWY AND THE COACH HAS BEEN FOUND GUILTY OF RECRUITING. NORCROSS AND WHEELER HAVE WON 7 OF THE 9 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS SINCE 5A HAS BEEN IN EXSISTANCE. HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THAT MANY AFRICAN AMERICAN STARS LIVE IN A ALL CAUCASION NEIGHBORHOODS OF COBB. DAVID BOYD RECRUITED ME @ TUCKER. MCCRARY RECRUITED ME AND FRIENDS @ COLUMBIA. LIPSCOMB RECRUITED ME @ WHEELER, AND THIS WAS ALL N THE LATE 90′S. THE FUN IS TAKEN OUT OF THE GAME WHEN ALL OF THE TALENT GOES TO THE SAME SCHOOLS. MILTON, WESTLAKE, MILLER GROVE, TUCKER, AND COLUMBIA WILL WIN EVERY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP EVERY YEAR AS THEY HAVE SINCE 1996 AS LONG AS GHSA ACTS LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO IGNORE THE FACT THAT THESE GUYS RECRUIT BUT WHY STOP IF NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING. I THINK THE OTHER COACHES WHO PLAY THE GAME FAIR HAVE TO TAKE ON THE “IF YOU CANT BEAT THEM JOIN THEM” CLUB, OTHERWISE YOU BETTER HOPE GA INVENTS A NIT FOR HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE THESE SCHOOLS WILL CONTINUE TO WIN WITH FIVE AND SIX DIVISION ONE PLAYERS ON THEIR TEAMS. cANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT RECRUITS WHEELER, TUCKER, AND MILLER GROVE HAVE COME NEXT SEASON.

Eagles1: I didn’t vote for Westlake for No. 1 in my poll. In fact, I didn’t vote in any polls. I just felt that Milton played a tougher schedule, and once they were awarded the controversial win vs. Norcross, that Milton is on a course with destiny. Maybe I’m wrong?

2:14 pm

Jacoby,

All of these accusations and you typed in all CAPS. Let me ask this question. Where did you and your friends win the state championship if every coach in the state of Georgia recruited you?

These are some strong statements you make about some successful programs. Coaches still have to get these kids to play as a team in order to be successful. Having the most talent does not mean you automatically win. Every coach should have a system and kids either buy into the system or the system will not work and the team will not be State Champions.

Although I do respect Mays high school, coach Mack and it’s phenomenal fan base; let’s keep it real and base this off of facts. Miller Grove has been battle tested more than any team in the state. What many don’t realize is the Wolverines have played one of the toughest schedules in the state and has done well against National Competition in tournaments in Charlotte, Kentucky, Ohio and Florida. The aformentioned reason is why they will live up to the moment to win the big game. It doesn’t matter what type of game or attack Mays will bring tonight, Miller Grove has seen it all. The key factor will be size and depth. MG can go 11-13 deep.
Food for thought: Mays high, named after my beloved fraternity brother, won the last game in an overtime thriller in 2007 (Region Playoffs), which knocked Miller Grove out of the Class AAAA State Playoffs. Since then, Miller Grove has lost one time at home (Lakeside 2009),three consecutive trips to the Final Four and a State Championship.

That is all!!

@ Nyric, You missed quoted me so bad i don’t know how to respond. I just wanted to know why Michael felt like West Lake was the underdog. However polls are bias and the state polls I saw this morning did not have Lagrange #1 in AAA Columbia’s is Ranked #1 ( Massey sports poll ) I never heard that Lagrange was #1. Don’t know what poll you saw sense you only go by the facts. Matter of fact Max preps polls showed Columbia as the fourth best team in the state and the Highest ranking AAA school.
