High school basketball playoff games postponed due to weather conditions (UPDATED)

More than a dozen Tuesday basketball playoff games have been postponed due to icy weather conditions. Fulton County has also announced that all Tuesday athletic events have been called off.

It is the fourth time this season that the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has dealt with weather postponements during basketball season, but this is most alarming: It is during the state playoffs, and could force some teams to have to play on back-to-back days. The quarterfinals round are scheduled to start at neutral sites on Friday.

“It’s unfortunate, (the snow) has really messed things up,” GHSA executive director Ralph Swearngin said. “We’re just not equipped down here to deal with it.

“There are other states that this situation is normal procedure, and they wouldn’t blink an eye at it. In Georgia, however, we have to pay attention and deal with it.”

The scheduling for all second-round playoff games is worked out between the competing schools, and not the GHSA. However, the GHSA has instructed for all Tuesday playoff games to be played, unless weather safety conditions prevent it.

Any postponements must be discussed and approved by the GHSA.

“It’s kind of an individual deal, because not all parts of the state are affected by the bad weather,” Swearngin said.

Most of Tuesday’s playoff games are between boys teams, while Wednesday’s schedule is predominantly girls games. If there are massive postponements also on Wednesday, it could cause major scheduling concerns with quarterfinal rounds set for Friday.

“This weekend’s third-round games will not be changed,” Swearngin said. “We’ve got to stay with them because of the (neutral) venues that will be used.”

Yes, Chamblee v Mays will be played tomorrow night, but it was moved yesterday since GHSA allows teams to “piggy-back” games if they have a boys AND girls team still in the tourney

Games that are postponed will give the playoff teams time to rest and prepare for the next game. Yes back to back games can be tough. But these are young adults. They can handle it.

This is the second time in state tournament history that games have been delayed because of snow.

In 1993, the Class A and AA semifinals were played on a Friday in Macon. Then, six inches of snow fell that night and the finals were postponed one week.

Those of us in temperate south Georgia remember this as just being one extremely lousy weekend, weather-wise.

Tell me, why any organization, especially GHSA, does not have a contingency plan in place for emergencies such as weather. Seriously, that is one of the cardinal rules in running any event. GHSA is just into making money and bossing people around, in my opinion.

Your times for the Norcross games are incorrect! Best double-header in town tonight! Girls vs. Marietta @ 6pm followed by the Boys vs. Meadowcreek at 7:30pm. Double win for Norcross in our home… The House of Blue!
