Make your prediction on a second-round upset in the high school basketball playoffs (UPDATED)

Chat with the AJC's Michael Carvell

AJC's Michael Carvell

How well do you know your high school basketball?

If you’re feeling good about your knowledge, then how about picking one game that will be an upset in the second round of the state basketball playoffs, which tip off on Tuesday.

The first round was full of them, most notably the Parkview girls. The No. 2 team in Class AAAAA saw its perfect season end at home in a shocker to Marietta.

This wasn’t an upset but … the Rockdale boys, ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA, defeated Fayette County 75-72 in overtime. I’m still trying to figure out that one. Rockdale never led in regulation, and trailed by five points with less than 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Do you believe in miracles?

Anyways, what’s your upset prediction — boys or girls — in the second round? State your case below.

TOURNAMENT INFO: 2ND ROUND PAIRINGS
Note: It is up to the individual teams (not the GHSA) to set game times.

I believe that Riverdale Lady Raiders will upset the Bradwell Inst. They will need outstanding play from their D-1 signees Tiarya Green(Tulsa) and Janel Osborne. They are one of the best tandem is Ga. highschool basketball this year.

In Double AA, I really don’t see the chance of many upsets; however, one that I would watch closely is the Greene County VS McIntosh Co. Academy Game. McIntosh should win but…….

dont know much about the top half of the bracket so wont comment on those teams…as far as the bottom half, i’d pick mceachern at home, norcross at home, milton at home, and wheeler but this game scares me as i have said before, dont know anything about the c gwinnett team

Campbell upsets McEachern though only an upset because it is a 2 seed beating a 1 seed.

I agree with Dan (unfortunately) Mays’ girls will be at home if Kendra Long does not step it up and play like we have looked for her to all year! She is an EXCELLENT ball player but has rested entirely too much this year – is it because she feels like she has already made it since she has signed to Georgia Tech…I don’t have the answer…but ALL of Mays High School would like to see her show up and show out….if she doen’t we will have to wait and see #11 Kristi take us back to the play offs next year…..COME ON KENDRA we love and need you!!!!!

Dan if NW Whitfeild doesn’t establish their post game FIRST they are not going to beat Mays. Robinson and McCurty better demand the ball and play back to the basket and with power. All that face up stuff is good at times but they are too soft to be 6′3 and 6′5 respectively. That will open it up for Cook and Coley their shooters and Clemmons needs more minutes of the bench as she is the x-factor. If Mays comes out and presses from the start with success NW Whitfield is done as Coley and Cook will get frustrated and it will doom them. They must play INSIDE-OUT and not OUTSIDE-IN.

@6AAAAA Fan- Campbell’s sophomores of Seymour, Cotton and Shanks to go along with the savvy senior play of Justin Haffad is too much for McEachern. If they can take the ball out of Tre Golden’s hands as lowly Berkmar did I don’t think McEachern can get enough from everyone else. Campbell is the sleeper team and a lost isn’t out of the question I just don’t think McEachern is THAT hard to beat.

The Hiram Lithia Springs watch will be a good one. Hiram has the depth, talent and balance to win. I’m on this one by myself but I think Hiram wins. They have excellent ball movement, aggressive defenders and rebound solid on both ends. Coach Sellers does a outstanding job of game management and using his personnel where they are BOTH efficient AND productive. Lithia is deep and has an arensal to throw at you yet Hiram has grown since their 6pt loss earlier this season to Lithia Springs.

Watch the Loganville girls, they COULD surprise Rome. They didn’t win their Region but they did beat NW Whitfield and have taken several other quality teams to the wire (Parkview, Etowah Madison Co as examples). In the end Rome is too solid with Mauri Wells and Summer Star leading the way.

Lovejoy is in our region and i think they have the potiential to beat Groves. They have a D1 shooting guard in Solomon and two solid post players. I also think Campbell will edge out McEachern!!!!

At LArry Munson’s Love Child…. man Chamblee/Mays is tough tough call. I’ve seen Chamblee this season and you just can’t discount their coach Caesar Burgess! Mays may have the slight edge athletes but Chamblee has balance led by David Mason and Langston Hall. Flip a coin I have no idea. I’ve seen Chamblee more than Mays which would have me lean towards Chamblee but Mays was impressive when I saw them.

Yea the Marist kid lost his mind. I wasn’t at that game but I had a source there. In the end Hiram had too much depth and balance and I’ll take that over one guy getting off (see Campbell/McEachern outlook)

No doubt about it:

Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute lady Tigers are on a roll and are a force to be reckoned with. They will win their next game.

Region 3-AAA Liberty County Panthers are too on a roll as well. They will win the next game too.

I agree HS Hoops. It is too bad for Marist that they were so singularly focused.
I’ve heard that Chamblee’s Fred Miller might be the x-factor in their game. If he does more good than bad, Mays might have some trouble.

BTW – The Chamblee v. Mays game has been moved to Wednesday night, at Mays, because Mays has both girls and boys still in the tourney

My Prediction is that Riverdale will fall to Bradwell Institute, thereby giving another show down the following week for the re-match between Bradwell Institute / Redan from last year.

My other prediction is that Liberty County Mens will have their way with Dougherty County as well, and advance to the next round.

For the Mays and NW Whitefield game coming up… I’m sure the Lady Raiders are out for revenge for last years lost in the 2nd round. In my opinion, NW Whitefield is going to lose. NW Whitefield wont be able to handle us. The Mays girls team is very strong. We have a lot of talent. Not just the starting five, but the whole team. If the whole team plays as one, we’re unstoppable. Mays and NW Whitefield….. there is no match up. We’re just too strong, too fast, and too powerful for NW Whitefield.

Eagle 1,

Right! Jordan MCrae, and Rion Brown. But there are others as well even coming off the bench. This is an exciting team that will have you out of your seats. Liberty County have depth, and lots of talent. This is a great team. It will be very hard hard to beat this theam because they can beat you from so many angles. They can shoot very good from the perimeter, they can hurt you on the boards, they are fast, and they can play either fast tempo or at a slow tempo. Either way, they are great.

GAC is probably the best Boys Basketball Team in the State of Georgia, regardless of classification…..however, they should be :) but, in the past, overconfidence has lost more than one basketball game.

Mays Raider!!

You guys thought that last year too due to Mays being ranked #2 at the time, and look what happened. NW has just as much talent and I promise you if Quaneisha and Christy played like they did against Chamblee, NW will win or at least keep it very close. They wanted that win very bad. You’d better hope Kendra Long is hitting for Mays or it’ll be a long night for Mays.

p.s. It’s NW Whitfield. It’s not Whitefield.
