Hard to Figure: I look forwrd to seeing Groves from Savannah. We don’t get a chance to find out much about cross-town teams, much less across the state. Good luck.
BBall Fan: you better believe Centenniel pt guard is good. They play well as a team and are well-coached. It is a shame those two teams meet so early in the brackets. It is a function of the strong region 6, though. One of the teams had to draw a 4 seed. Centenniel has played especially well against Milton this year. Milton barely won at their place and Centenniel embarrassed us at home.
W/E: I agree abouit the tech called on Lipscomb. Boyd had that called on him against Centenniel recently. But the refereeing was the worst I have seen this year – for both sides. there was a blatant defensive goal tending not called on Wheeler that blunted some Milton momentum. Also a couple of horrible calls/no-calls under the basket for both. Dai Jon was jobbed out of the game. he NEVER fouls out. Oh well. there’ll be more poorly called games. it works out over a lifetime. Wheeler has a great team. I hope it comes back to Wheeler/Milton in finals. That’ll be the final word…for this year.

A region 6 team will win, no doubt in my mind! Most likely Milton or Wheeler.

I’m really excited about the buzz with ECCHS Blue Devils this year. As a former Blue Devil Alum some of my best memories of high school were the football games at the GraniteBowl and the basketball games at the Inferno! Elbert Co. has alot of homegrown athletes in football, basketball, track and baseball. I hope that Coach Fox at Georgia or Coach Hewitt at Tech make a valiant effort to recruit this kid and keep him in State.

AAA better watch out for the Westover boys and girls teams from Southwest GA. They both have the number 1 seed and this season the boys beat number 1 team in the state Monroe (a cross town rival). There could possibly be a round 4 for Westover and Monroe in the state championship because we (WHS) have already played Monroe 3 times this year including the region championship. I’m just saying, don’t be suprised.

BBal Fan we welcome playing Centennial in the first round game. Centennial who has lost 8 games and is probably beat up from playing all of those tuff region 6 teams might not be ready to face Norcross at home. Norcross who is on a 22 game winning streak (which ranks them 6th in the county’s history) and is playing the best they have all year will bring an enormous amount of confidence to this game. Remember Norcross face Milton earlier this yr and even before they had gotten use to playing together, on a neutral court they only lost by 4 points. And Norcross has not lost a home game in over 7 years. So we look forward to the game with Centennial because it will tell us where we are in relationship to the top echelon teams. “Bring them on.”

Don’t sleep on teams from 7-AAAA in girls. Rome, Hillgrove and NW Whitfield could very easily make a run for the title.

Anybody know anything about Chamblee girls?? I can’t really tell anything about them due to three of their four losses being to SW DeKalb.

Dylan,

Chamblee has a good team. Like you say they’ve lost four and three were to SWD. They have a good one-two punch with Jasmine Camp and Lucy Mason and have a young 6-2 post player that can handle the ball and get up and down the court.

Grove High was beat up by Meadowcreek this season, and that is their only loss. The good teams are in the northern regions. We need to play some of the other brackets and crossover more, but there might be some surprises this season.

first off no offense to the teams in south ga cause you guys get us at football but the best basketball is played up north and its a shame that norcross, Centennial, AND milton are in the same side of the bracket thats brutal. But for a first round game to have norcross vs Centennial is WOW but ill go with norcross cause their at home. Wheeler will have some scares along the way but I see them making it to play westlake in the semi. Milton vs norcross was a great game the first time and it will be agian but im milton cause they are the most talented team in this tourney (4 yes count them 4 high D1 players) I see wheeler vs milton agian in what I will call the game of the century. its so close I cant even pick a winner yet….

Finally people are joining me on the GACS bandwagon… Best team in the state? They crushed Peachtree Ridge by 23, beat Centennial by 10 and beat top national programs Fayetteville, AK, United Faith Christian and Greene Co. Ala. Poor #3 Laney… they have to play #2 NE Macon in round 2. Let the games begin!

Tweaked the blog post a little to try making it easier for you to keep up with the latest news. I put that up top. There are new boys and girls tourney previews, a story on Columbia’s skeds maybe changing and a cool “Inside Scoop” blog on that Elbert County kid, Rod Rucker, who creamed a backboard into a thousand pieces with his slam dunk. The video of it is in the new blog, too. Pretty cool interview. I hope you like it. And you can still vote in Round 2 of our AJC Slam Dunk Contest, so check it out and make your selection. One thing can be said about this Westlake program is that we are very humbled and fortunate to be in the position we are in, in the state tourney. We have learned to be humble and thankful from our head coach and deacon Coach Darron Rogers Sr. We say good luck to all the teams who made it, but rest assure we are not overlooking no matchups. To Eagle 1 i always send a special good luck to you guys becasue your standup fans and at least kno what your talking about when it comes to high school basketball. To all of the north Fulton schools who assume no one can match your region and have no chance against your powerhouses just kno we are as hungry as ever to get back to the final four. we are definetly looking forward to a Wheeler matchup, by the way its a travesty your best player was handcuffed after a game is he still playing in the tournament. If he is thats another travesty in itself. Also to clear a couple of things up. In a news article in ESPN rise the magazine Jelan Kendrick said he missed the state tournament becasue of a bad ankle.

If you say chamblee is ghetto…I wonder what you think of the rest of schools in atlanta. Chamblee is in the suburbs….what kind of culture shock are you talking about….did you finally see more than 15 black kids that are not on the team at a basketball game as a fan and get scared away…lol..guess yall don’t see black fans that much where you from. They are just all the superstar athletes for all of your sports…smh…IT STILL EXISTS!!! such a shame.

CDub

Carvell, GHSA should implement tournament seeding reform. There is no way all of the good (state ranked) teams should be in the same quarter. I think they should seed the teams like the NCAA tournament instead of just pitting one region against another. If travel is an issue, then play all the games at neutral sites. Also, the regions should take a close look at their rules. If I had influence, I would guarantee the regular season champ no worse than the #2 seed for the region going into the state tournament. Under my scheme, Centennial would either be a #2 seed or in another draw instead of playing Norcross in the first round. The current system gives us good early round games but the great teams are sometimes lumped together. The tournament should gradually get harder in each round instead of being like a roller coaster. What do you think?

truth4westlake-

Jelan was handcuffed for about 10 seconds, but the incident didn’t go down like the papers reported. How do I know? Well 1. I was actually at the game unlike the ajc or mdj 2. A good friend of mine was in the middle of the whole incident. Jelan did charge after the ref but Lipscomb was quick to restrain him. A cop who had previous history with Jelan came up and removed Jelan from Lipscomb and tried to handcuff Jelan- only the Campbell officials and came and basically told the cop that he was out of line because at that point they were just trying to get all the Wheeler and Milton players in their respective locker rooms and at this point the officials were long gone (with their armed escorts of course) and Jelan and Lipscomb were on their way to the Wheeler locker room when the cop acted out. And despite what the papers have tried to hint at Jelan never touched the official. The reporting on the whole incident and game was pathetic primarily because none of the papers were at the game so how in god’s name did they know what happened. They made assumptions and you know what they say when you assume- it makes an as* out of u and me. I’m still waiting for a write-up of how awful the refs were in that game. And they were terrible both ways, but Wheeler was dealt the most blows by officials in the 4th- including the inexplicable tech on lipscomb mid-4th. The high school basketball coverage in this state is so pathetic. Try actually going to some games guys. It will give you more legitimacy.

W/E

I consider Westlake the biggest obstacle for Wheeler because of the size Westlake can throw out there. If Wheeler and Milton meet again Wheeler will win because we’re a point away from being 2-0 against them and we played a terrible game in that region semi-final. I was actually surprised Wheeler sent that game to OT considering Jelan and Phil were having their worst respective games in the last month (Phil was pressing because Isiah Thomas was in the building). If Phil and Jelan can pick up where they left off before that region semifinal then Wheeler will be the toughest out in the state tourney.

How can you say Wheeler / Milton would be the GAME of the Century? How do you people not realize that this is one of the WEAKER teams Wheeler has had in the past 10 years?

They start a 6′5 Michelin man that can’t make it up and down the floor and then supplement that with two midgets on the perimeter.

They rely entirely on dribble penetration and three-pointers. They will struggle with Peacthree Ridge and then fall to Central Gwinnett in the 2nd round.

I was merely referring to the sports facilities at Chamblee. The U.S. skating team practices there because the floor is slicker than actual ice. Both, NW Whitefield and Sequoyah are used to nice gyms with floors so spotless, you could eat off them. That’s the “culture shock” I was talking about

BTW – Chamblee is 58% AA, and 23% Cauc’

Chamblee is not ghetto

February 25th, 2010
12:56 pm

Dr. Hoop,

I know what the racial divide is up there thats why im asking why are you calling the place ghetto. ghetto is a term associated with poor black people so what does the gloss on the floor have to do with the school being ghetto or a culture shock…your original statement said nothing about the bad facilities and im sure anyone who read it did not think you were talking about the facilities…there are many schools deeper in the inner city that have floors that are glossed extremely well and are nice looking schools so what do you call them? lets be for real you went wayyy too far and its no way to clean that one up buddy. I’ve also seen many of games in more affluent areas where the facilities were horrible…Does that make them Ghetto also?

In the wonderful words of Ed Lover “C’mon SON!”…”you ought to be kicked off the face of the earth for some b.s. like that” and i dont mean to sound so Ghetto with it.

In defense of Truth4Westlake, Jelan Kendrick was suspended and removed from the Westlake team on January 26th, 2009 (after previous other infractions). This was over 6 ½ weeks before Westlake’s State semi final game and before the region tournament. There was no ankle injury. The antics will continue unless the community stops covering for this kid. It has to stop or he will be lost.
