“March Madness” arrives in February for high school basketball … predictions?

Chat with the AJC's Michael Carvell

AJC's Michael Carvell

“March Madness” is one of the most exciting times of the year in sports.

The basketball wackiness tipped off the at high school level this week with the region tournaments.  Here is one shocker out of Henry County:

Ola High, which is only in its fourth year of varsity basketball, upset Jonesboro 53-49 to earn its first trip to the state tournament. Playoffs, baby! This is a school that won only six games in its first two seasons. They don’t have a player taller than 6-foot-2 on this year’s roster.

How did Ola do it? They hit some clutch buckets early, including a pair of deeeeeeeep 3-pointers in the first quarter by Thomas Werner during a 13-0 run (”He was at least 10 feet behind the 3-point line … seriously,” said coach Curt Miller). That got Jonesboro out of the zone defense. Meanwhile, Ola switched up its own defensive schemes, playing primarily man-to-man with strong backside help. It forced Jonesboro into making mistakes.

When the final buzzer sounded, “We were like little kids at Christmas time,” Miller said. “After you always hear you will never make it, our guys were tired of hearing that … There were so many people that texted or called me to congratulate us. It was really awesome.”

Which upsets are you predicting this week? Which high school team will shock the world? Please post below.

You guys should take notes on covering high school basketball from Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. The AJC coverage of high school basketball is horrible.

With all the excitement, why can’t anyone find a posted schdule anywhere? Not in the AJC, not on the GHA website (they list the regional tournaments starting next week), not on school websites – frustrating and inexcusable!

I have been saying all year that the ajc coverage of high school basketball is horrible. We have to depend on bloggers to get scores and schedules. I gave up a month ago I started keeping up with my home state TX because the Houston Chronicle lays it out right in front of you. You can look up any team and any player. Thumbs down ajc.

As a lifelong Georgian, I can safely say that this has been some of
the worst roundball reporting I have ever seen. No tournament scores
have been posted and the schedules listed noted only a few games.
I have been checking scores thru gasports.com.
C’mon guys, get with it – a high school student writing for his school
paper can do better !!
On the positive side, at least Terrence Moore, AKA Clarence Bore,
is gone, so we have one thing to be thankful for.

Thanks much nysouth – where can we find info for the girls side? I agree with all the sentiments regarding the AJC’s incredibly abysmal coverage of HS hoops. And yes, I’m a HS football fan as well.

I am disappointed in the high school basketball coverage as well. In the past, we were able to click on the high school link, then go to specific high schools for information. Now it is horrible. It does our kids a disservice when during basketball season, deep into the season mind you, that we see football photos, football coverage. Sure, it is fantastic to hear about the football signings, and the stories behind them. However, we have some terrific stories, and/or footage from this baskteball season as well. For instance, on Tuesday evening in Clayton County, Jonesboro High School gymnasium to be precise, I witnessed what could easily be considered the best high school basketball game ever. Mundy’s Mill High played Riverdale High School (Girls) to close out the regular season. In a nutshell, Riverdale led by as much as 25 points at one stretch. In fact, the lead was 16 +/- with less than 5 minutes or so left. What a comeback by Mundy’s Mill. They camme all the way back to win! Mundy’s Mill had great contribution from several players, but was lead by the school’s all-time leading scorer (Tandrea High) who scored 36 points. What a great senior night!
Besides having to play at a neutral site because of security reasons, this was a terrific way to perform on Senior Night! Congratulations to the Mundy’s Mill Lady Tigers, as well as the Riverdale Lady Raiders! Great game!

Unfortunately there was no coverage the following day! What a shame!
Enough about football. Give our kids the attention they deserve!

If it wasn’t for the bloggers, we wouldn’t know that Pope beat Alpharetta to go on to the next round or that there was a great game at Jonesboro or even what the regional schedule looks like this coming week. I have to agree with Big Rome, the kids playing today and this weekend should be acknowledge just as much as the kids during football season. They had there day, give these kids theirs.

Thanks jackrichey for providing the Region 6AAAAA Boys tournament bracket. Without your posting I would never have been able to find a schedule, certainly not in the AJC. They continue to be the worst as far as providing coverage of the ongoing Region BB tournaments. We go through this same crap every year. When are they going to wake and provide some coverage of these tournaments. After all, they determine who advances to the state tournament. Of course the next big question is: Will they tell us where, when and who regarding the first few rounds of the state tournament?

Milton fan

February 18th, 2010
3:35 pm

yes yes yes!!! I have been complaining about bball coverage all year. thought when almighty football season was over it would improve. WRONG. This is a legitimate HS bball hotbed – one of the top 5 in the country. there are probably 6 or 7 teams that can legitimately win state in AAAAA – four from region 6! D1 talent is littered all over this landscape. This coverage would be understandable in, say, Knoxville, TN. But ATL?? AJC you FAIL!

February 18th, 2010
3:38 pm

The AJC is never going to do anything about this because look at all the information that all of us just posted for free. As long as they can depend on people like us, why would they pay someone to write it for publication in the paper?

I’ve written e-mails and letters to the AJC editors about the lack of HS BB coverage for the past two years and have gotten all of one reply and it was the same old excuses, we only have so many reporters, budget cuts, etc., etc. I’ve challenged them to explain why each HS football game gets a recap and we can’t even get the AJC to publish the BB scores with team records and high scorers for each team. Of course I never received an answer.

Until aomebody decides to challenge the AJC as a daily paper, I’m afraid we are stuck with what we have. Yes, we could all cancel our subscriptions, but how would that solve the problem?

Hey guys…quit being angry about the lack of basketball coverage. It is obvious that ajc will not cover basketball the way that we expect it to be covered. So do like we have done and start your own team blog. later we will be able to then link the blog and have the coverage which we think we deserve and want to have. Good idea, 3 Straight. I think next year I will start a Milton Blog. If we can get about 10 or so blogs linked, maybe we can start a good network that will spread. Lets keep in touch thru this sorry AJC site until we can take flight on our own. No offense to you Todd. I like your writing. You obviously don’t get the support you need – and probably want.
BTW, went to the Milton-Walton game tonight. Miltonb won by about 15. Very tight game first half. See-saw battle, Milton led by 2 at half. Harrow played a great game (25 pts), but Milton had too much at all five spots for them. Fisrt time I have seem Harrow. Real deal. He can play in the ACC, Ithink, despite his size. Nolte had a monster game for Milton. 27 pts,10 boards. He kept sticking a dagger in Walton every time they tried to take a lead.
I left after the 1st quarter of the 2nd game Wheeler/Roswell. Painful. 22-4 at one point. So, Wheeler/Milton rematch Sat night at Campbell. Should be a heavy scene. Anybody got the scores from the Centenniel side of the bracket tonite? How about the Norcross region?

ive seen both wheeler walton games and pretty much the same from my perspective…harrow is good and can score like crazy, but they are just simply below average at best at every other postition on the floor..i missed the first milton wheeler game but i am hoping to make this one….unless i am wrong i think campbells gym is on the small side, i hope to be corrected by someone with more knowledge than me, last year was nice cause alpharetta was a big gym, but i think alot of people will be shut out at campbells gym

WheelerFan #2 – Campbell gym is small. about the same as Wheeler gym. Maybe a little more capacity b/c of seats on one end. I was at Wheeler/Milton game several weeks ago. Barely got in. worth sitting cramped on the floor in corner. Wheeler played great. Milton was a little off, but mostly Wheeler caused that. Had home crowd rockin. Milton was without Nolte though. This should be crazy good.

BTW….how’s that, “Mount Vernon” campus doing up there? DB’s looking for a ring for that thumb.

It’s always clear which 2 Regions, regardless of classification, are the best in the state. Region 6, both 5A & 4A, are head and shoulders above all the others. The 5th place team in either one of those could win (this is not scientific) 60% of the remaining regions in the state….IMO

Yeah Doc Hoop. DB definitely trying for more hardware. He’s sweatin bullets now though. His team has been de-mystified after the wheeler and Centenniel losses. Not as much (dignified) swagger. I do think they are the best when they have that rhythm going. Royal needs to be more focused. He looks disinterested at times. Dai-Jon Parker is the best athlete I have seen on a HS bballcourt – grace, speed, quickness, strength, vertical, shooting touch. Man, everything. If he couldn’t hit the ocean from the beach (which he can), you’d still want him on the floor – the whole game. And Nolte. The quiet assasin. Kills with sneaky offensive putbacks, NBA 3 pointers, good passing, solid ball handling and better than you think defense. I think the Cameron Crazies will love him (K is looking at him I think). And Shannon Scott (charlie’s son) is smooth as silk. good floor general. Not as lightning quick as White or Harrow, but steady as the day is long. I want him running my show every night.
Well, the weekend is here. I’ll be at Campbell tomorrow night. BIG rematch with wheeler. I’m confident but nervous as an elephanr on a tight-rope (made that up). Good luck to all – except Wheeler haha.
everybody report in here tomorrow night. Next year we get our own blog.
