Walton needs to win but the game is at Wheeler and Wheeler out played them last game going inside out and hitting a lot of big shots from the corner. If Walton can efficiently press Wheeler and convert turnovers they have a chance. Harrow outside shot is back 6 3’s in a row last game but Wheeler had 3 guys on him laast game when Walton was in their half court offense. So I would say it is a tossup and I am glad Walton has it live on the web because last year I couldn’t get in.

Pope is a good team playing in the best division in Georgia high school basketball. Garrett Brown can play with anyone in the state. They have good height in their front line and they would probably be the 2nd best team in 7-AAAAA.

You failed to mention that we played Milton twice in one week and last Saturday went into their arena and beat them. Centennial has ONE region loss, the one loss to Milton. We beat Wheeler, Walton, et al. A lot of our non region losses were in tournaments out of state. You can't really compare those teams. Centennial is playing a lot better as a team this year with several players contributing. AAAAA is THE toughest region in high school basketball with a lot of great teams. Tournament time should be fun!

Looks like Dutchtown girls coach Angela Williams should send the Griffin coach some roses this weekend. Thanks to Griffin's win over Forest Park last night, Dutchtown is the regular season Region 4-AAAA champions and with that, they have secured a state tournament bid. The regular season region champion gets a bye into the region tournament semifinals. The region tournament starts Monday (if all this snow holds off) Monday at Mount Zion High in Jonesboro.

Saw Westlake last night, they are good. I would be surprised if they didn't reach the Final Four and possible championship game. Big, physical team with some good guard play. They have a good mixture of young, and veteran players. Was told by an assistant coach that the JV is just as tall as the varsity. The new school Langston Hughes did cut some into the talent pool, but Westlake should continue to be a force for some more years.

Eagle 2: Great question.
Common state titles in 1963, 1965, 1977 and 2 more state runner-ups after 1977. That is stretching it. And to answer your question, yes there have been some teams that have started out 24-0. One that comes to mind is the 33-0 Westlake team that won state with AJC Player of the Year A.J. Moye (spell). Only halfway good team that LaGrange has beaten is Lithia Springs, and they are a weak link in the whole scope of Atlanta area basketball. They have never advanced out the second round against the better teams in the area.
Haven't seen LaGrange this season, but have seen a lot of high school basketball. There hasn't been a team (even all the great SW Macon, Wheeler, Norcross, Decatur and so on) teams in the state that has had 15 players that were good enough that all could be "designated starters". You usually have about 6-7 that could be starters and the rest are role players.

HEY REGION 6 YOU DIDN'T MEANTION POPE WHEN YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT GOOD REGION 6 TEAMS. I GUESS YOU DIDTN'T HEAR ABOUT THE GAME LAST NIGHT. POPE LEAD MOST OF THE GAME OVER WHEELER. WHEELER HAD TO OVER COME A 9 POINT 4QTR DEFICIT TO SQUEAK OUT A OT VICTORY BY ONLY 3 PTS 65-62. BY THE WAY MASSEY HAS POPE RANKED 31ST IN THE STATE IN GA'S 5A CLASS.

BY THE WAY NORCROSS NOW HAS A 19 GAME WINNING STREAK.

3 Straight - you seem desperate to prove Norcross is #1. Your just lucky your region doesn't include any other top 10 or even top 20 teams.
Centennial has beat Milton at their place, beat Wheeler by 3, and lost to Westlake by one and had a chance to win it. What are your significant in-state wins?
You got calls in your favor at home in both of the showcases. If Walton or Campbell had your schedule, they'd have a 17 game win streak too. I'm just not convinced yet. You had your chance against Milton and lost. Congratulations on beating up on Mill Creek, Collins Hill, and Peachree Ridge.

Here is some interesting numbers for defense. This number measures the team's ability to prevent its opponent from scoring and compares them nationally agianst all teams.
Norcross, 328, Milton 328, Westlake 786, Wheeler 3,199, Centennial 3,201
These numbers compare the teams against teams in Ga's 5A class only:
Milton 1. Norcross 3, Westlake 7, Wheeler 18, Centennial 19

slalom1, have you seen columbia's schedule? you actually had the nerve to make this statement

"Granted, Columbia has played the tougher schedule. However, don’t know if they have played a team as deep and physical as the 2010 Grangers"

Are you serious, they have actually just only played 8 teams that have been ranked in the top 10 in the country at some point in the year. I'm not saying the grangers arent good but they can not be as good or as deep as oak hill, or gonzaga, or maybe Waukegan, wait lets try Montrose, heck i doubt they are better than Arlington Country Day. As far as who columbia has played. I doubt there is anyone in the state who has played a tougher schedule or more depth as you say....I'll tell you what we'll see you in the final four if you make it.

here's the better question are you sure the grangers have played a team as tough as columbia?

"I respect your opinions, so if they are equal then why can’t Norcross have their one week of fame?"

There's always next week! ... Plus, Norcross has already had their three years of fame. : )

I hear Wheeler escaped Pope in overtime tonight. Is that reason enough to have Norcross jump the 'Cats? Maybe so.

slalom1: What are you doing on the basketball blog? I'm eager to see the Grangers at state.

FINALLY saw the Grangers basketball team against Carver. Granted, Columbia has played the tougher schedule. However, don't know if they have played a team as deep and physical as the 2010 Grangers. Coach Pauly has the luxury of 15 players who are all capable of being designated as starters. There was an era when LaGrange was known more as a basketball school than a football school. i.e. State champs in 1963, 1965, 1977 and 2 more state runner-ups after 1977. All in the state's largest classification. Someone needs to help me out on this, but I believe the 2010 Grangers are the first in the modern era to start out the season 24-0. They are good. Very good especially on defense.

I respect your opinions, so if they are equal then why can't Norcross have their one week of fame?

Your exactly right. They both will meet at GAC next week in region and you already know what will happen.
If anyone attended the game last friday you wouldve seen the luckiest shots you will see in high school basketball, i mean some no look shots.

Im just saying, They shouldnt have went from what number 6? to number 2 is all im saying.

Buford will take it all in the long run, theres no team in the state thats does things quite like they do.

''TODD WHY DO YOU THINK NORCROSS IS ONLY NO.5 WHEN THE REST OF POLLSTERS THINK THEY ARE BETTER COMPARED TO THE 5A CLASS?"

Honest difference of opinion, I guess. As I've said, it's almost impossible to separate the top 5 teams. It's hard to accept being #5 when you could easily be #1. I don't have a problem w/ the coaches putting Norcross #1. But I'll add this: I do think our poll is better than the coaches. They've got Groves and Newton ahead of Milton and Centennial. They've Columbia at #3 in AAA.

Todd, why did Rabuns girls drop to 10 from 2nd? their record after last nights win is 20-1. They are much better than Fannin who you have at 6th. Just curious.

Bufordwolf, get your facts straight. Buford won the first meeting with GAC by 7, not 14. Polls mean nothing and will always reflect "what have you done lately". The 2 teams will likely meet again next week and the winner will be ranked higher. The only thing that really matters, though is that final ranking.

Me thinks some of these teams with these "pretty" and "attractive" records against weak and inferior non-region and region competition will be exposed come state playoffs in a couple weeks.

Unfortunately in Class AAAAA boys teams from Region 1-4 will make their way to the Final Four the easy way. Let Region 5-8 lightweights Campbell, Meadowcreek, McEachern and a few others play in that bracket and they will also coast to the Final Four. Says here that the trend continues in AAAAA that the state champion will come from Region 5-8. The BIG exception is Westlake. They are the only legit contender in the South brackets because they have the three main qualities in talent, coaching and strong schedule to compete with team in the North bracket.

Newton County: Heard some good things about your team from a reliable coach. He thinks team plays well together and doesn't beat themselves in most cases. Unfortunably, the Rams have not played anyone of quality to really make a fair assessment. I wouldn't be surprise if you all made the Final Four, because much like the weak non-region and region schedule you play, you have a weak state playoff bracket. If things were to stay the same, he is your road to the Gwinnett Arena – Tift County, Newnan and Savannah. Enjoy the ride.

Buford has been beating teams by 25 points and up! lost to SW dekalb by what 8? wouldve been closer but they had to foul and the end of the game, and one loss takes us from the number one sport to the number 3?? Vidalia plays no one whatsoever deep south ga teams are a little overatted.

3 Straight wins against over matched teams by 35 points just says they are not playing their reserves early enough. Norcross should have played better in state teams though when they did they lost. Thomas Jefferson if it is the team from Brooklyn is a Quality win. I don't know there other out of state opponents. 7AAAAA is a weak division and I will be interest if they have to meet more then 1 of the 6AAAAA teams in the playoff if they can play a good team more the once every month. Seen Norcross play on the web. They have talent and our well coached but it is hard to tell if that translates against another as talanted team. 6AAAAA teams must come to play every night because the division is so stacked. If any team should be complaining it is Campbell which has a lot of young talent and well coached team but does not crack the top 10 list.

GAC girls or Vidalia girls shouldnt be ranked higher than Buford girls. Buford Girls and GAC have the same record in their region. Both teams lost to each other once, GAC lost at their place by 14 and Buford lost at hoime by 4 in overtime playing one of the worst games they could!!

You all know Buford is going to take it home again, Im just confused on how GAC could possibly be ranked higher than Buford, are you kidding me!

Come out in about a week or so to watch them smash the lady spartans at their place for region! The rankings will change then, thats ofr sure!

Oh yea and norcross girls should be number 1! :)

“What more does wheeler have to do to move up? they keep winning and winning against top rated talent yet they get nothing to show for it. Great win by Centennial ill give them that, but when Wheeler beat Milton, nothing happened. Right now there is not a team playing better than wheeler”

We can't rank teams strictly based on how they’re playing ‘’right now.’’ It’s how they’ve played all season that matters most. If you rank based on ‘’right now,’’ then when did ‘’right now” start? Is it last week? Is it a month ago? Is it when Wheeler’s winning streak began? Should we not consider that Centennial not only beat Milton, but also beat Wheeler? Only a fool would not respect Wheeler, but as other posters noted, you can’t ignore early losses.

“I realize you go by record but strenght of schedule should matter.”

Bruin: If you look at the W-L records throughout the rankings, it’s clear that we do consider strength of schedule. We've got a 5-loss team at No. 1 ahead of an undefeated team in one classification. But what is so strong about Region 8-AAAA’s schedule (girls)? This region didn’t shine in the state playoffs last year. So how do you figure the strength of schedule is all that good? You’ll have to tell us what we’re missing.

But it would likely lead to a Wheeler- Milton Semifinal. Although if the tournament format stays the same as last year and the two years before that which it should, the semis are on Friday instead of Thursday and the finals on Saturday.

Region 6 you have the playoff formatting wrong. It's not a 1-10 seeding process. The region is divided into two subregions. A- which is Wheeler, Walton, Campbell, Pope, and Lassiter, Then B- Milton, Centennial, Kell, Roswell, and Alpharetta. This is how the region tourny would shape up

The tournament shapes like this. For the sake of less confusion I’m numbering some of the games.
Play-in round
6A 5 seed vs. 6B 4 seed (Game 1)
6B 5 seed vs. 6A 4 seed (Game 2)

qtrs.-@ higher seeds gym

6A 1 seed vs winner of Game 1 (Game 3)
6A 2 seed vs 6B 3 seed (Game 4)
6B 1 seed vs winner of Game 2 (Game 5)
6B 2 seed vs. 6A 3 seed (Game 6)

Semis (teams in state tourney) @Campbell

Winner of Game 3 vs. Winner of Game 6
Winner of Game 4 vs. Winner of Game 5

You can figure the seeding from there.

So the result would be the 3rd team of Wheeler/Walton/Campbell playing Milton in Fulton county in a game to knock one out of the state playoffs. Wheeler has a 1-game lead on both at the moment

Wheeler doesnt deserve to move up becasue rankings are based on a few things. A few of those things are wins and losses and how hot are you at the time. Granted you have had a great Jannuary, but you had a devastating December becasue of Mr. Kendrick and Milton has played a tougher schedule to date. Of course we took care of Centennial early so thats why we got the nod at #1. The beauty is everything will be worked out in a few weeks. Westlake has won the state in AAA, and AAAA. what make you think we wont in AAAAA. First year in AAAAA we went to the final four last year we cant do nothing but get better!!!!

Todd Holcomb

Can't wait for Saturday's article, you're right both of Columbia's team are major state contenders. Our girls were the only team that played Carrollton tough last season and it took double overtime to get rid of them in the elite 8. Our boys lost a tough one to S. Atlanta in the final four last season playing a little short handed but redemption is going to be sweet for both teams this season

"Tread softly"? Man please, do you honestly think we're concerned about S. Atlanta? No way, once again better check our track record. We didn't just start this winning stuff if you had already done your research you'd see we've been to the final four the last five years, winning the championship twice in that stretch. I hope to see S. Atlanta in Macon this year so they can get what's coming to them but to be honest with you it won't happen. They don't have the same kind of team and they haven't played anybody, all those factors lead to an early playoff loss.
Mark my words!

Fin, Wheeler can win their side of the region with wins this week. That will secure a 2 seed unless Centennial loses a game they shouldn't. Milton will be a 3 seed in that case. So the likely scenario has:
1. Centennial
2. Wheeler
3. Milton
4. Campbell or Walton

That sets up a Wheeler/Milton matchup in the Final 4 which would be next Thursday at Campbell HS. Good luck getting in.

I think Wheeler has a lot to prove and they are going to be out for revenge versus Campbell (On a side note, I wonder why no other school has tried to get Coach Gwinn of Campbell to their school. He is a great coach and he does a lot with very little). Wheeler should beat Pope soundly which sets up a great showdown against Walton for the season finale. In order for Wheeler to win the region, does Milton have to lose another game or what's the deal?

I agree with Region 6. Wheeler's on a roll right now, but I'd wait for this week to end before arguing for them to be moved up. If Wheeler wins out this week then I feel they are worthy of Top-3 consideration, but winning out isn't a guarantee with Campbell tomorrow, Pope Thursday (who's better than their 3 wins in region suggest), and the capper against Walton Friday.

Wheelerfan, we are ranked in the top 5? How much respect do you want? Lost to Campbell and Centennial and beat Milton when they were missing a starter. Still ranked up there high and could go higher with wins this week vs Campbell, Pope, and Walton.

What more does wheeler have to do to move up? they keep winning and winning against top rated talent yet they get nothing to show for it. Great win by Centennial ill give them that, but when Wheeler beat Milton, nothing happened.

Right now there is not a team playing better than wheeler, maybe norcross, but i feel as if neither of us are being represented properly

"what does it take for Hillgrove to drop out of the rankings? They lost to Woodland."

I'm asking myself the same, but Hillgrove remains in first place of a region with 20-something teams (or close to it). Sure seems like the people's poll is telling me that the Hillgrove/McEachern is the overrated triangle of Cobb County.

"Columbia is 20-5 Todd!!!"

Aren't schools allowed to play just 25 regular-season games? Columbia has three games this week. What's the deal?

G-dub: I have no say in which games are covered and how we cover them, but as far as coverage of Gwinnett vs. DeKalb, I don't see the same pattern you are seeing. I've done stories on Norcross, GAC and Wesleyan, but also Tucker and Miller Grove. This week, I believe Michael Carvell is going to the Redan girls game. Mike Tierney wrote a nice feature on Redan's Alisha Andrews earlier this season. Chip Saye is going to Columbia on Friday for a story on the success of the girls and boys programs.

justthefacts: I didn't mean to imply that controversy somehow excuses Westlake's loss to Morrow. I was just pointing out that it was controversial. Probably should not have mentioned it. I generally ignore 'excuses' for losing, such as injuries. Also, it's tricky to factor in ''who's playing the best right now,'' because then you have to define when ''right now'' started. Was it Jan. 1? Jan. 15? It's hard to ignore who's hot and who's not, but it also invites a lot of subjective judgment.

My understanding for region 7 is the coaches vote each year on where they will play the regional tournament. Also I think the no1 (and maybe no2 as well) team for the regular season gets a bye to the regional semis so this would ensure an automatic trip to the state tournament for them as well.

Like I said before, coverage is very weak. Saturday night you had defending 5A champ and still undefeated Redan girls against 2 time defending 4A champ SWD. Great game but if I had not witnessed it for myself I would not know who won because ajc coverage is so weak. If it were Parkview vs Brookwood I'm sure we would have had enough by now. You guys need to stop being so obvious or learn good basketball is not only played on the north side.

Todd the qtrs. in the region 6AAAAA tourney aren't played at Campbell, they're played at the higher-seeded team's gym. It's the semis onward that are played at Campbell. So whoever gets the 3-seed out of the a subregion will be going to Milton to play that game.

Nice job doing these rankings Todd, as I'm pretty sure you haven't seen most teams South of Macon. First, everyone needs to take a chill pill because you will soon find out how good your region/team is against the rest of the state. And one tidbit of info, you might find helpful concerning 1-AAA, is that Westover has not lost a game with their top player (Onochie Ochie) as he missed about 1 month after a serious fall in the opening minutes against Monroe during their first meeting. All three of Westover's losses were without the services of Ochie. As we all know injuries are part of the game, but don't overlook Westover if completely healthy. But I can't wait for the playoffs to start as it should be exciting.

Yeah T4W it is gonna be tough for you all up in AAAAA and i wish you all well. Your guys are good and I would like to see them win it all (the trash talk is fun and games). hopefully all of them region six teams beat up on each other too bad and cancel each other out. You better believe columbia is not overlooking Monroe, SA, Elbert, or Westover. all of them are good teams but what i can say is, i seriously doubt they are any tougher than any of the teams we have faced on a national level this year.

Eagle2 i hope we dont fizzle out this year to. Yea everytime I see that kid Leslie on ESPN i remember being in Gwinnett. You had a great team then i thought the 2nd best in the state at that time. LOL. The funny thing is South Atlanta has some new pieces who are very good. That no one knows about. But when it comes to 5AAAAA basketball its going to take preparation hard work, and dedication to win in this classfication. Columbia better be ready for SOuth Atlanta, dont forget Monroe either!!!!

Here's how region 6 works cobb hoops:
Here's how the region tournament works
Here's how the region is split:

(6B) that has Milton, Centennial, Alpharetta, Kell, and Roswell. The other side (6A) is Campbell, Wheeler, Walton, Pope, and Lassiter.

The tournament shapes like this. For the sake of less confusion I'm numbering some of the games.
Play-in round
6A 5 seed vs. 6B 4 seed (Game 1)
6B 5 seed vs. 6A 4 seed (Game 2)

1st round

6A 1 seed vs winner of Game 1 (Game 3)
6A 2 seed vs 6B 3 seed (Game 4)
6B 1 seed vs winner of Game 2 (Game 5)
6B 2 seed vs. 6A 3 seed (Game 6)

Semis (teams in state tourney)

Winner of Game 3 vs. Winner of Game 6
Winner of Game 4 vs. Winner of Game 5

You can figure the seeding from there.

So the result would be the 3rd team of Wheeler/Walton/Campbell playing either Centennial or Milton in Fulton county in a game to knock one out of the state playoffs

I agree that any one of those top five teams, in 5A, can stake a claim to the top spot. However, your analysis is a little flawed. Westlake recently lost to a weak Morrow team. Whether it was a controversial loss or not the number 1 team shouldn't have put themselves in that situation.
Two weeks ago Centennial lost to a TC Williams team that lost to Thomas Jefferson the night before. Norcross beat Thomas Jefferson.
Milton probably has had the toughest schedule but is 1-3 in the last four games against quality teams.
Wheeler lost to a Scott County team that Norcross beat. Right now Wheeler is playing better then the teams in front of them
Norcross is 17-0 since losing to Milton by 4. They are 16-0 since Adrian Hubbard left the team. They are playing better without him because their remaing pieces fit together better.
Since the start of the holiday break;
Norcross is 16-0 and has a +25 point differential.
Wheeler is 11-2 with a +19 point differential.
Westlake is 14-2 with a +18 point differential.
Milton is 12-4 with a +13 point differential.
Centennial is 13-5 with a +3 point differential.
Right now that is how I would have them rated but there isn't one of them I would rule out as the posssible state champion.

Truth4Westlake....lol....unless they caught the hoy spirit when they got reenergized spiritually i dont think they would want you selling wolf tickets for them. Last year was definitely their year and they siezed the moment. Congrats to them but they dont stand a chance either...as for westlake...good job this season i hope history doesnt repeat itself and yall fizzle out as in years past...as a fan im sure you remember what happened when yall ran into us a couple of years ago when yall were undefeated and ranked #1.

Also, Seth Coleman writes a good notebook on Georgia high school football on Fridays. So help him out if you've got a good story that's not getting any press.

Meanwhile, the AJC has stories coming this week on Redan's girls for Wednesday, Rockdale County's boys on Friday and Columbia's boys/girls (both are major state contenders) for Saturday.

“I know GAC is AA, but you should go there this week (home Tuesday & Friday) and you might see the best boys team in GA and probably one of the best if not the best basketball gyms in all of GA.’’

Probably one of the best gyms in Georgia? I’d like to see one better! ..

Here’s a story I did on GAC last week:
http://www.ajc.com/sports/high-school/martin-picks-up-where-291350.html

“How do you have Hillgrove ahead of Lithia Springs when they went to Hillgrove and beat them?”

jw: That’s a good question. Head-to-head isn’t everything, and Lithia Springs has lost a couple of games to AAA opponents. But having said that, I think I should review that call because Lithia Springs has lost some close ones, and I probably punished them too much for losing to AAAAA South Cobb. I think I expected so much of Hillgrove this season that I might not be looking at their results objectively. (Yes, once or twice a year, I struggle with objectivity just like everybody else.) Good point.

“Saturday night at Milton it looked as though the Eagles were going to run Centennial out of the building after the first quarter leading 21-12.”

I didn’t realize Milton was up 9 in that game. Interesting. I wonder if it’s partly the fatigue of playing in that region and that schedule overall. It’s hard for Milton or Centennial or any of those schools to be at the top of their game every night. That’s why the region tournament will be interesting – especially the potential Milton-Walton game in the quarterfinals. Or what if it’s Campbell-Milton in the QF in Campbell’s gym? Good stuff.

Congratulations to Centennial on back to back very solid performances vs Milton. I saw both games and either team could've won that first meeting on Tuesday. That's one of the best hs games I've seen this year between 2 great teams. The final margin of 7 was not at all indicitive of the game.
Saturday night at Milton it looked as though the Eagles were going to run Centennial out of the building after the first quarter leading 21-12. The Knights controlled everything from that point forward tying the game and the half and dominating the 2nd half.
Wheeler wins big in California and is on a roll. Campbell knocks off Walton and the 6A is now wide open for the taking depending on this week.
Are they really going to allow Campbell to host the best region tournament in the courntry so 1,000 people can see it? What are they thinking????????

“In AAA boys, How do you have Lagrange which is 23-0 behind Columbia thats 17-5. Anyone else thinks this is odd.”

Todd Holcomb don't worry I got your back on this one

gemini103,
Columbia has played 11 teams that has been either nationally or regionally ranked and the 5 games they lost came to teams that at some point were ranked by numerous polls in the top ten in the country and they were all loses by no more than 5 pts with the exception of yates and whitney young. I'm not one for moral victories but they were in the game until the end in all of those losses. with that said and from looking at Lagrange's schedule I'm not saying they are not good but I dont think they would have stood a chance with the schedule Columbia has played. So the record means nothing. Check the strength of schedule. outside of region play Columbia has arguably the toughest schedule in the state and thats why they are number one.

The team with most wins and no loses is Trinity Christain School's lady Cruaders from Dublin GA at 28-0. They are one of smallest schools in GISA's AAA.

I have one thing to say about the Class A boys. The State better watch for Lanier County. They have a group of boys that have played together for many years and have gelled. They should be heavy contenders for the State Championship this year.

No it's not that odd, Columbia plays a national schedule. If we only had GA opponents we'd be undefeated as well.

#1 team in Georgia... GAC. They beat Centennial and their only loss is to Melrose Memphis (a top 20 US team). 4 of the 5 starters played last year with the 1 addition being Malcom Brogdan who many believe is one of the top juniors in the state.

How do you have Hillgrove ahead of Lithia Springs when they went to Hillgrove and beat them?

Todd, since norcross lost its post player to injury and none of these players were in the starting rotation last year plus two players are transfers, I think using the second half results will be a much better perdictor of Norcross' future capabilities than was december 09.
