My colleague Chip Saye wrote an article a few weeks back on the best college prospects in Georgia.
Jelan Kendrick of Wheeler came out No. 1 among boys. He’s the consensus choice of the recruiting services. I saw Kendrick play for the first time during the Milton-Wheeler game last month, and I can see why Memphis (to which he has signed) is eager to get him on campus.
But is he Georgia’s best player right now? In high school? Kendrick is outstanding, but is his status as the No. 1 recruit built partly on his upside potential? The season is still young. The state playoffs might decide that.
But here are is my choice: Ryan Harrow. Let these videos speak for the Walton point guard:
Another guy I like is Marcus Thornton Click on Marcus for some of his highlights. Not only a great talent (6-7 forward averaging 27 ppg), but a great student. Can’t remember if his coach told me 3.8 or 4.0 GPA.
I’ve seen Harrow, Kendrick and Thornton. I’ve seen the Milton juniors, Scott, Royal and Parker. I’ve seen Jeremy Lamb, Trae Golden and Jershon Cobb.
I’ve not seen the Liberty County guys, Rion Brown or Jordan McRae. I’ve not seen Kentavious Caldwell, who put up 57 points in a game last week for Greenville.
We’re five weeks away from choosing a Mr. Georgia Basketball. Who’s it gonna be?
And what about the girls? I haven’t seen as many of the top candidates. Never seen Khaalidah Miller of Douglass. I’ve seen Redan’s Nia Evans and Alisha Andrews. Briana Jordan of Norcross a couple of times. Watched Jordan and the Norcross freshman, Diamond DeShields and Kaela Davis, last week.
Meanwhile, we got rankings. Milton plays Centennial twice this week. … Whitefield loses a second game, but we stubbornly keep the Wolfpack at No. 1 in Class AA. Wilkinson is undefeated but struggled a bit last week. …

Why’d you move Wheeler ahead of Norcross? We didn’t play anybody of note this week and Norcross beat maybe the top team out of NC this Saturday. Just saying. Harrow is good, but in their win over Campbell this Friday, he wasn’t dominant- he had 29, but most came on FT’s in the 4th. I don’t think there’s a clear defined #1 player in GA this year. I watched Kentavious Caldwell get shut down by Whitefield in December, also have seen the Milton trio a few times and while they are very good, they aren’t dominatiing. I’m still waiting for Westlake to play a GA team with a similar talent level. Kendrick has been hot lately, but he’s had a few average games. GoldenChild is good, but still needs to mature in terms of in-game conduct.

OK TODD….I AM DISAPPOINTED IN YOUR RANKINGS THIS WEEK. YOUR RANKINGS APPEAR TO BE DIMINISHING WITH TIME AND THE FACT THAT AJC DOES NOT PAY MUCH ATTENTION TO BASKETBALL. THIS PROVES TO ME THAT YOU DON’T USE ANY RELATIVE AVAILABLE INFORMATION TO AID YOU WITH YOUR DECISION MAKING.
LET ME SHARE SOME RELATIVE AVAILABLE INFORMATION:
*NORCROSS HAS WON 14 GAMES IN A ROW AND IS 17-2
*THEY HAVE PLAYED 6 OUT-OF-STATE TEAMS WON ALL 6 OF WHICH 5 WERE ON THE ROAD
*OF THOSE ,THREE WERE; SCOTT COUNTY, KY (100 NATIONALLY), JEFFERSON NYC (6TH IN THE CITY), AND LAST NIGHT QUALTITY EDUCATION ACADEMY, NC (3RD IN NC, HAS PLAYED 5 TOP 70 TEAMS AND HAD 3 6′10″ PLAYERS-A REAL GOOD TEAM)
*THE GASPORTS COACHES POLL HAS NORCROSS 2ND IN THE STATE
* AVERAGES 67 PTS AND ONLY GIVING UP 53 PTS
* THIS WEEK REVENGED OUR PR LOST BY 17, BEAT MILL CREEK BY 30 AND BEAT A GOOD
QEA, NC BY 2
IF AJC WOULD ONCE AGAIN KEEP UP WITH GA BASKETBALL THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN.

I agree “real milton basketball”. Over half the team from Milton has been recruited in purely for basketball reasons. These kids all came from schools with good academic standards, like shannon scott and Lovett. The academic hardship crap is bogus!! These kids were recruited by Coach Boyd to play basketball. It is unfair to the homegrown kids and the schools around the region who play by the rules.

i will admit that harrow is the better high school player. hes an electrifying player who can deffinetly fill it up every night and when i saw him play last week at wheeler, i was very impressed.
but jelan kendrick makes for a better future prospect. hes very smooth and has great length which he uses to his advantage. there have been few defenders who can stop him when he goes to the basket. also he is much bigger than harrow which will make the transition from highschool to college to NBA much easier.
Harrow will be a great player too, but i think it will take longer for him to adjust from high school defense to ACC colegiate defenses

i agree, there is no way centennial should still remain at the top. so what they beat wheeler and walton. first, wheeler was just figuring out who they were after losing 3 key starters, as well as figuring out how to utilize kendrick. the wheeler team today would crush centennial. second, walton was missing ryan harrow who is their offense.
if those are centennials “key wins” then they havent proved much this season

Pope UGA XXIII & Ralph Macchio: I see the coaches poll don’t have Newton ranked either. It is easy not to rank them since they haven’t played anybody. There region is way down this year. The only good team they have played was Class AAAA Richmond County and they lost. Until teams in the South region (1-4) start playing and beating good teams, they will never get any respect. Newton just have to worry about beating teams from Region 3-AAAAA in the playoffs and they get to the Final Four, where they will lose against one of the teams from Region 5-8. Not my firsthand account, but a very reliable south Georgia source says that the Lanier County boys aren’t nearly as good as advertised. Their sub-region is incredibly weak. They’ve beaten LoHi and Washington County, but those are the only quality wins on the schedule. The only other quality opponent has been Valdosta. They’ve played some middling teams, but none that have any potential to do anything in state.
Girls’ basketball is way down this year across the state. Cross Keys usually is in a class by itself, but this year they have competition. There have been a minimum of 25 games this year where one school has failed to score 10 points. Cross Keys only has five of those. Winder-Barrow won a game last week 13-9, though it was almost exclusively stall ball in the second half.

The AAAA girls rankings are a joke. How do you dismiss the 8AAAA girls teams. You will see in the state playoffs. Clarke is 14-3 (11-0 in region). Salem is 18-3 (9-2 in region). Madison County 17-5 (10-2 in region). Loganville 12-8 (9 – 3 in region and they may have played one of the tooughest 4 AAAA schedules in the state if not they toughest.
Fayette C, SW Dekalb, Rome, NW Whitfield, Mays, Osbourne, Douglas I can see. However, FP, Bainbridge, and Statesboro don’t have a chance to beat any of the top four teams from region 5,6,7,8 come state playoff time. This is why Bainbridge or whomever will get wrecked in the final four. Also, why the state play off format needs to change.

I played and have been watching Cobb hoops for a decade plus. It’s the best hoops around. I’ve seen all the great ones come in and be dominant forces. I have never seen a player like Harrow. He is the only one I would pay to watch. His ball handling skills are off the charts (helps to have hot sauces coach) and every game he does something electrifying. It’s amazing to see considering his small size. NC State will be one to watch next year with Harrow, Brown, and if they get the next KG, Leslie. That’s some freshman class. I would definietly try to get to Walton’s games to watch Harrow in action. Check out Harrow on youtube, easy to see what he can be considered the best in the state. I’ve seen Kendrick play and I have NOT been impressed. he isn’t smooth at all.
However, if Walton had a better coach, Walton could be a great time, right now, they are good, and even that is a stretch. There is no clear cut offense, their fundamentals and lack of leadership all point to the coach. Ryan will throw the ball off the backboard in games for dunks. Seriously?? The old Walton coach, Wilson would sit him for the rest of the game. The game Ryan fanited against Milton Walton was down 30 points with 2 minutes left in the game. He was obviously sick from the start of the game. Coach Goyis still has him in the game, down 30 in the 4th and he faints. Are you kidding me?!?

With that being said…I don’t see any school outside of the Region 6 out of 5A winning state. Those teams are SO dominant!!

You haters of coach Boyd at Milton should move your kids into the Roswell district and allow them to play for coach Ty Phillips at Roswell. Maybe then your “home grown kids” will be happy. Roswell basketball won 2 games this year against lower classification schools and are awful. Stop making excuses…if your kids were very good and could play, they would be playing. Your approach to winning basketball and athletics with “home grownn kids” is a thing of the past. You can compete for state titles like Milton and Centenial or have a 2-17 record like Roswell…..your choice….Roswell appears to have made its choice. They are awful…..but they play “home grown kids”.

No reason to continue to play Ryan in that Milton game the only way Walton had a chance to beat Milton is if Ryan is at 100% so they should have rested him.
Ryan is one of the best guards I have ever seen play in high school and by far the best guard I have seen play since I moved to Atlanta 10 years ago.

YOU ARE RIGHT is a moron. Basically, you are comparing the entire ATL metro area against one region out of Savannah. Of course there are going to be more teams make it further when you are comparing multiple regions to just one, but as you so nicely pointed out no one from Savannah has one it all since 1998. But you are incorrect when you say that region 3 AAAAA has done nothing since.
2001 Savannah High lost in the Championship
2003 Savannah High lost in Semi’s to champion
2004 Beach High lost in Semi’s to champion
2006 Beach High lost in Championship game
2008 Savannah High lost in Semi’s
Get your facts straight before you talk b/c obviously you know nothing about basketball. The teams that come out of this region give the ATL teams all they can handle. It’s now all about “exposure” for the few players with D1 talent, whose parent’s are praying and hoping for that NBA retirement plan.

Man what are you smoking? If all you wanted was “moral victories” then that’s just an excuse. Who cares how close you got in the last ten years? Once again getting close only matters in hand grenade throwing and horseshoes, so pardon me if I don’t crown you for almost getting there. I admit Savannah schools have always been very competitive when it comes to high school basketball in GA but that has changed recently even the schools in Albany don’t compete with us anymore. So actually nobody was wrong in saying you haven’t done anything since 1998, you may get close but that’s just a “moral victory”.
YOU ARE RIGHT
February 1st, 2010
10:21 am
ATLChumps : I guess you all like to count morale victories instead of actually wins. You failed to point out that in those times your BELOVED Region 3-AAAAA (just Savannah and Beach by the way) they have lost by an average of 13 points. In 2008 Norcross wasn’t even challenged by Savannah in a 79-46 loss. That’s 33 points. No way a championship game (well, it wasn’t really a game) should be like that. In 2006, Beach was no match for Norcross in a 66-49 game (sorry, that was a game neither). That was a 17-point loss.
But to be fair ATLChump, Beach only lost to South Gwinnett by four in ‘04 and Savannah lost by only seven points in ‘03 and ‘01 they really represented by losing by only two points. As you can see, they played better early in the decade, but since then the gap has widen.
The fact remains, as long as your POWERHOUSE Region 3-AAAAA teams have to go through the weak sisters of Region 1, 2 and 4, you will get to the semifinals. The GHSA should place on representative in each portion of the playoff bracket. We know if that was the case, it would be much like football and an early exit for the Savannah teams. And you all won’t have Camden to save face for that weak region.
Here is some advice, dropped down to Class A, and maybe you can bring back the glory years. Until then, morale victories are all you can hope for.
And that my friend, are some facts from this moron and idiot.

I’m so tired of hearing all this recruiting mess, every school can’t have a good basketball team. There are schools that traditionally have great programs and that’s the reason kids want to go there, it has nothing to do with a coach asking them to come. Track records speak for themselves, if you have a program known for winning and putting kids into colleges why wouldn’t any player want to be a part of that. The success is what draws kids and if they want to move into that specific area who are you to say that they can’t. If that school excels in academics as well and that kid wants to be a part of that then how can you say that they can’t. If it’s done illegally then I can feel your pain but majority of it is not, it’s just the parents of players that don’t make the team that get upset.

Not sure why everyone gets so angry about this. If your kid can not make the Milton team move to a school district where he will have a chance to play if that is so important to you. Look at the top ten teams in USATODAY high school rankings they all recruit. They are training grounds for D1 basketball players just like Wheeler Magnet is a training ground for Georgia Tech engineers. Taylor Wooten: We could send our lightweight teams Newton, Campbell, Pope, Kell, Collins Hill and Mill Creek to play in Region 1-AAAAA and 3-AAAAA and they would look like powerhouses against that weak competition down there.
JD: Liberty County boys and Bradwell girls will fade in the playoffs like they typically do. Don’t matter who is wearing those uniforms, they don’t face in real competition until the playoffs. They would be just another team in the Metro ATL area. They need to start testing the waters during the regular season so they won’t be overwhelmed come the playoffs.
Todd: I see you throw them a bone with Groves in the rankings. The Rebels have a pretty record, but they lost to an average Meadowcreek by 15 points. Says her Groves probably won’t make out the region and definitely no further than the second round. When Groves doesn’t make out the region, the fine folks in Region 3-AAAAA will be telling us that’s because our region is so strong and there is a lot of parity in the region. BS!!! As a parent of transfer, Its my decision as a tax payer where I sent my child to school. If my child has the ability to play on a national schedule,be pushed to play to his/her best ability, be prepared to play college ball ,have the opportunity to attend a college I cant afford why does anyone care and if his current school doesnt have the ability to help get him there then why wouldnt I do what I feel is in the best interest of my child?
Truth be told it’s not that easy there are rules if the receiving school has integrity they would insist you go about it the right way either a bonifide move, sit out whatever…ghsa denies kids on many occasions.
Bottom line is It’s my child and my right if I play by the rules set forth by the GHSA, Dont blame the transfer students because your child got bumped. If someone comes on your job and bumps you out of a job or a raise do you whine to the boss?

“Why’d you move Wheeler ahead of Norcross? We didn’t play anybody of note this week and Norcross beat maybe the top team out of NC this Saturday. Just saying.”
Wheeler was already ahead of Norcross last week. Must’ve been AP or GaSports that had Norcross higher.
Devil Lover: Thanks for Norcross report. We’re keeping up with the Devils. I saw them pound Peachtree Ridge last week. The top five in Class AAAAA are pretty similar. I could almost draw their names out of a hat. In fact, I think the MaxPreps rankings demonstrate that. The difference nationally between 193 and 293 is pretty small. Not worth sweating over, IMO. Bigger gap between No. 5 and No. 6.
“#2 vs #3 in girls 3A tomorrow, Can we get some love in the inner city?”
Yeah, I noticed just now that Columbia is playing Carver.
“Newton is not even ranked in AAAAA ??..at 19 – 1 ??? Give me a break,please !!”
Records don’t tell the whole story. It’s who you beat (and who beats you). Newton lost to a AAAA team (albeit a good one). Not saying Newton isn’t a Top 10 team. We’ll find out. But Newton hasn’t played the same competition that any of the ranked teams have.
“All of you Atlanta people keep overlooking the Bainbridge boys and girls teams. You will get to see us in the state playoffs.”
We’ve got one ranked #5, the other #7. That’s not overlooking.
Bruin 777: You need to argue with Toole. He thinks Bainbridge’s girls are slighted at No. 5. You think they should be ejected altogether. … Every region has teams with those kinds of records. Region 8 didn’t have any elite 8 teams last year. Its No. 3 seed got beat by 41 points in the first round. R8 has something to prove in the playoffs.
“Groves is the best school in AAAAA. Watch you see when we win the championship!Savannah schools always go to the championship.”
I’d love to see Groves make a run.
“You go by
records and not schedule. A lot teams do play good national teams.”
If we go by records and not schedule, then why do we rank Whitefield (18-2) ahead of Wilkinson (20-0)? Why don’t we have Newton (19-1) ranked? We try to go by schedule and record. Not saying we always get it right, though.
“I have never seen a player like Harrow. He is the only one I would pay to watch. His ball handling skills are off the charts.’’
Well put. He really is fun to watch.
“if you have been around watching Cobb hoops for a decade plus, then you ought to be ashamed of yourself for saying that you have never seen a player like Harrow. Think about players like DA Layne, Antwuan Dixon, Ezra Williams, Dequan Jones.’’
Fin: Those guys were great, perhaps better than Harrow, but were they LIKE Harrow? That’s what the reader meant, I think. Harrow is a different player than those guys. Smaller, quicker off the dribble and more fun to watch, IMO. I haven’t seen many point guards like that.

All the press for AAAAA… how about Greater Atlanta Christian?? 19-1 with thier only loss to Melrose Memphis (top 15 in USA). Crushed Peachtree Ridge (who beat Norcross), United Faith Christian (reigning NC state champions) and several other top national programs (Greene Co. Ala.), Fayetteville AK). Keep an eye on jr. Malcomb Brogdan… I’ve seen them all and I could easily argue that he is the BEST player in Georgia.

All of your Mr. georgia basketball picks come from 5A schools you should look at the top teams and figure out which player has done the most for his school. If you look a Class A Powerhouse Whitefield Academy you have a top 100 prospect 6′6′ 275 lb Kennard Backman who is on his way to his second championship ring. It is not fair that georgia does not have a single Champion in basketball to showcase all the talent to see who is the best player and who the is the best team. no of the so called good schools will play the schools from the lower classifications unless they meet in an out of state tournament. Where it does not count against their record or rankings. Lets look at what Whitefield Academy has accomplished over the past decade 2 Class A championships, 2 elite eights, 1 sweet 16, 7 final fours, 3 Marietta players of the year 2002 Tim Morris, 2003 Ryan Lamb, 2008 Brandon Reid. Class A State Tournament MVP’s Ryan Lamb, Brandon Reid. Class A State All tournament team Ryan Lamb, Tim Morris, Jarvis Bronner, Rodney Rivers, Junard Hartley, Kevin Anderson, Kelvin McConnell, Cameron Heyward, Cameron Baskerville, Brandon Reid, Kennard Backman, Dominque Knight, Josh Smith, Paul Delaney, Anthony Miller, Trey Miller, Chris Redding.
Div 1 scholarships Tim Morris (Stanford/Washington,) Ryan Lamb (Marshall,) Anthony Miller (Citadel,) Jarvis Bronner (Bethune Cookman), Junard Hartley (Campbell), Kelvin McConnell (Kennesaw State), Josh Smith played 2 years at Whitefield Academy (NBA), Paul Delaney Also, played 2 years at Whitefield Academy (UAB), Kevin Anderson (Richmond) played 3years, Cameron Heyward (Ohio State football) played 3 yrs at Whitefield Academy did not play football until he got to Peachtree ridge, Chris Redding (Wake Forest Football played basketball 4 yrs football 1 yr.) Trey Miller (Naval academy played both Football and Basketball). All the players listed also, made the all region teams of multiple times while at Whitefield Academy and All-State. Current players on the Whitefield Academy roster that will make all-tournament and all-region Kennard Backman, Chris Lovelace, Tekele Cotton, Kenneth Gaines. The proof is in the victories and where the players go after graduation. When will the basketball public in georgia quit getting cheated we need an all class champion. Also, an all class ranking based on winning percentages and rpi sort of like the NCAA.

Also, you don’t forget players like Louis Williams, Mike Mercer, Ryan Lamb, Javaris Crittendon, so of the best guards to come through georgia if you mean just point guards 1. Ryan Lamb 1 State Championship 2. Toney Douglas 3. Javaris Crittendon 2 State Championships 3. D.A. Layne 2 state Championships 4. Anthony Callaway 5. Tony Akins 2 State Championships 6. Mike Mercer 1 State championship. A good point guard is a leader and gets everyone involed in the offense and they win games and championships they are able to take their team to the Championship and make everyone around them better. Oh and win games if you check all of these players stats they probably lead their team in assist steals and averaged around 20 a game but their winning percentages in championship games is probably stellar.

I think that Ryan Harrow has had a great season so far and has been playing at a high level but Jelan has too and he may not get all the press since he has a great supporting cast and does not have to put up crazy numbers. After seeing Harrow and Kendrick face off, I have to say its a tie right now in my book for Mr. Basketball of Georgia. Both guys are leading their teams and playing at a high level. By the way, if you don’t know who Jordan Adams(Central Gwinnett) then check out this article: http://www.courtcred.com/2010/01/adams-more-than-a-shooter-central-gwinnett-wins-again/

on’t knock Newton because of what region we play in, we mainly play DeKalb and Henry County schools and one school from Augusta, our Athletic Director tried to get us moved to region 8-AAAAA in December to play with the Gwinnett schools but the GHSA denied us and will make us stay in region 2-AAAAA for four more years but they did add the Coweta county schools to our region, not sure if they have any basketball powerhouses or not but come the playoffs we will find out who deserves to be there and who doesn’t, it seems like we have a lot of Cobb Co. school boosters and North Fulton school boosters on here.

Mr. Holcomb–Thanks for answering my question / statement!
I love the talk about H/S basketball here in the State of Georgia. There is a LOT of talent here. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE football, but I think that many times, H/S Basketball is overshadowed here in the state. We consistently have some of the top talent in the nation here.
I personally wish they would get rid of the regions and allow everyone to play everyone and have one HUGE state tournament at the end of the season. Can you imagine in season matchups like Centennial v Columbia, McEachern v Westlake, Milton v SW ATL, Wheeler v Whitfield etc etc…Those games would be great!!!
Keep up the good convo!
ps. Mr. Holcomb–can you advise the powers that be that we h/s basketball fans would like the ability to talk about baskeball all year long just like football.
Thanks!!

And for the people complaining about “recruiting” players and “home grown players” getting bumped, I refer you to the statement made by Transfer Parent. I’m not a parent, but I totally agree with that statement. Students are allowed to transfer for academic reasons to get into a stronger school w/ stronger academic backgrounds, why is there such a problem for athletes to try and get into college.

The biggest problem with the tournament this year is that 6 AAAAA has 5 really good teams and only 4 can go to the tournament.
Not buying that you need to win state to be the best point guard. Harrow does score a lot but in the games I saw this year and last year he scored his points in the flow of the game.
So if you are judging pure shooting skill, dribbling ability, ability to get to the basket, jumping ability, body control, ability to play at full speed, court vision and the entertainment factor, seen most of the people on the list on and have to say Ryan Harrow has all those skills and most on the list were lacking in more then one. Not saying this translates to the next level but I am glad to have seen him play and recommend if you haven’t try and catch a game if you can get in the gym

@ZONE..I meant SW Atlanta Christian Academy. As far as your statement to transfer_parent, do you know how many D1 basketball scholorships have been given to basketball players at the East Cobb and North Fulton Co. schools? Wheeler alone has had over 50 kids go to Division 1 schools. It does matter where you play…kids at the schools in Region 6 often go out of state to play in large tournaments where there are MULTIPLE college recruiters there to watch the game.

Newton is ranked in the GA Sportswriters Poll at 7th for the 3rd consecutive week and this week was T-4th in the online coaches poll, so why are you all saying they aren’t ranked. They have 1 loss to Richmond Academy who is ranked 2nd in AAAA coaches poll, but they had a 13 pt have time lead till the referee who used profanity took over in the game. If you want to see where they rank amongst the other schools in the state, including all classifications and private schools, check out maxpreps.com where Newton is 12th overall currently, while #1 in your AAAA AJC poll is 22nd. The AJC cares way more about off-season football recruiting than in season great basketball games and players. AJC hoops coverage is a lip service joke at best. LOL Holcombe. Why don’t you travel out of Gwinnett and see what else there is for yourself. Try it and then make up your mind. Newton can’t help it’s region schedule, just like Central Gwinnett can’t help the pathetic nature of region 8-AAAAA, but they are still ranked and haven’t played many tough games either. P.S. Newton played out of state in TN for the 2nd straight year. The only poll that is off is the AJC, because they only cover Gwinnett and Cobb counties. P.S. Newton doesn’t recruit and deserves respect for that reason only. They only have 1 Div player. When teams have more than 1 or maybe 2 that says it all. Peace out.

Fin..I played against Layne and Dixon, guarded Layne every game! While they are great players, they are no Ryan Harrow. Layne had a great shooters touch and ability to score at will. However, his ball handling, while impressive, is no match for Harrow. No one entertains like Ryan, he makes the games fun. Ryan has incredible court vision and expect his transition to the ACC will not be as tough as some think.

I enjoyed seeing the gym packed of college coaches during the month of September. It’s not about Conning a college coach it is about placing my child in an environment where he can get exposure play a challenging schedule rather than just region teams. More importantly being able to

Ryan Harrow is better than Kendrick off attitude alone. Its funny no one talks about the character of this kid Kendrick. Who was kicked off Westlake team last year for fighting and constantly disciplined for being basically uncoachable. They also dont say anything on why Wheeler isnt as good as advertised this year. The reason is becasue Kendrick. Its very hard to develop a team’s chemistry with him on the team becasue he has his own agenda. Just ask Campbell why they beat Wheeler. To all wheeler fans beware in the state he may blow a head gasket. All in all hes a great player with tremendous upside if he had a better attitude. Not to get into the transfer argument, but here is the bottom line truth. If you are good enough, you play and more importantly, EARN your spot. Crying about your kid not getting a spot on the team because a more talented kid has earned it, is ludicrous. If you feel that way, I wonder what your kid is learning from you and the way life works. If your not good enough, get better. Don’t whine about a good kid who has the ability or earned his keep by busting his tail to get better at what he does. How do you know he did not transfer to be in a better academic school. Wheeler has one of the best academic programs around (look it up), as does Walton. It’s why Cobb is considered the best school system in the state. Getting off track….bottom line, if you are not good enough, stop whining and WORK harder to earn a spot. Teach your kid that and practicing 5 hours a day after school and I can GUARANTEE you, he will earn the respect of the players, coaches, and EARN a spot on the team. That’s life, that is what the kids will face in the real world. Its a major reason why kids are so soft today. They have parents whining about how its no fair little johnny doesn’t get a chance because big johnny is better. It drives me crazy that parents forget about teaching what real hard work can do for you. And yes, I have a kid, and he knows if he’s getting beat out, the only way to earn that spot back is to outwork the other guy.
Oh….and I was a recruited transfer too. thanks.

@Truth4Westlake… In the famous words of Lee Corso..”Not so fast my friend.” While agreeing with some of your sentiment in regards to Kendrick, the reason Wheeler is struggling this year is b/c they lost 2 Division 1 recruits from last years state championship team.
@CobbHoops. I have seen Harrow play, and I like his game, but to me, he just runs up and down the court and doesn’t really involve his teammates as much as Layne did. I hope that Harrow is over his sickness and that between now and the time he enrolls @ NC State he picks up some weight to get ready for the rigors of college ball.

you make the point that jelan kendrick came from the south, and that is true. but what it also true is that he had a chance to win with a southern team and he couldnt. now he is with an east cobb team and hes fitting in better than ever. its because he is surrounded by a winning tradition. wheeler doesnt accept losing.
Also Doug lipscomb is a great coach because he won state championships before he recruited. that 2005 team was made up of a group of players who played middle school together, and it could be said that it was the best team wheeler has ever had.
But it is not lipscomb to blame for transfers. he has no power to offer scholarships. its the parents decission whether their kid plays for one team or another. maybe its a reflection of great coaching that makes a player want to play for one coach over another. if you were a player would you turn down a chance to play for a coach who has won 5 state championships, over 400 games, and has put a considerable amount of both college and NBA talent out there?
