Top Georgia teams head out of state

Not many changes in the rankings this week, partly due to weather-related postponements. Milton solidified itself as No. 1 in boys AAAAA with an easy win over Walton despite missing Julian Royal. Good to hear Ryan Harrow was OK after collapsing from dehydration last week.

This week should be fun for those who follow Georgia’s more elite programs.

Milton is traveling to Springfield, Mo., and will play Missouri’s defending Class AAAAA champion, Chaminade of St. Louis, on Thursday. That’s part of the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions three-day tournament. Hope Royal will be back. The game will feature four of the top 30 juniors in the country (according to one recruiting service).

Centennial, Wheeler and Miller Grove are playing in Ohio next weekend through MLK Day.

There’s a big girls event Saturday at GAC. Buford plays SWD, and Parkview plays GAC. Wesleyan is playing a South Carolina team.

I like the games vs. out-of-state teams, but is there a downside to this? Does this encourage the all-star congregation of transfers, and if so, is that good or bad for high school basketball? I go back and forth on this.

I definitely like the perspective of knowing how Georgia’s top teams play with some of the nation’s best. At Milton, coach David Boyd talks of winning a national title in 2011. Why not? Nobody else has three juniors among the top 30 in the country.

But I’d be just as happy to see Wheeler and Norcross play more often, or see a Parkview-Redan girls game more than just in the state playoffs. There’s enough competition in the state, and it would draw bigger crowds if more of the top teams just played each other.

Class AA No. 6 Northeast-Macon plays at unranked Henry County tomorrow in a big Region 4-AA game. Henry County reached the Final Four last season. They have two losses, both to No. 10 Dutchtown, a Class AAAA school. Henry County is led by senior point guard Briana Williams, a Mercer signee.

Where are Forest Park Girls? You will see after tommorow when they beat Dutchtown by 15 points.

I think the lady bulldogs of dutchtown should be ranked higher than what they are right now.

Todd, where can I find basketball game scores now? I can’t find a link on the AJC’s high school page any more for them.

As to your question, I think the out-of-state scheduling has gotten completely out of hand, just like all the high school games showing up on ESPN now. And yes, I am old school…

HS Fan: It should be a good game tomorrow night. However, I don’t see The Park winning by 15 points. I see a closer game. Hopefully Ashlee Cole doesn’t get in foul trouble. The Strickland twins could be the difference in a Dutchtown win. The Park has a young and talented team that should be a state contender for the next couple years.

Sportsfan 31313: Hope your girls can stay in the top 10. The south doesn’t show well in the higher classifications. Tift County boys, Northside girls, Valdosta boys and girls look good. I have seen all of them play.

Good luck!

Congrats to Milton HS; they have an excellent coach in David Boyd; I remember him have successful years at 2 other schools. I officiated basketball for 26 years and I hold coach boyd in the highest regard for the way he handles his players. I’m absolutely sure that all players who has played for him has learned more than just basketball.

Seriously, do you watch any of these teams play? Mill Creek has zero quality wins, McEachern is terrible, yet they are ranked. Don’t vote for a team based on their record. Actually look and see who they’ve played.

Thanks Matt
Dont vote on a team based on their record actually look at the teams they’ve played.
Columbia Eagles are 11-4 and they can beat any team in Ga. Just my opinion.

Columbia would destroy South Atlanta right now. South Atlanta has played a very weak schedule. But, when you just look and see a pretty record, the not so smart folks at the AJC assume they have a great team. Columbia would beat em by 30 if they played today.

Finally some people besides myself see these rankings as a joke. How can columbia be rank in the nation by several top notch sites and our own AJC cant find the time to research a heckuva team as the Eagles. Their losses came against four top 25 teams in the Nation. Besides they beat 3 top teams in the nation also. They play a national schedule not a local schedule which mean you will probaly loss 4-5 games. Thanks guys!!

Matt & Eagle 1: While this poll might now be accurate in your opinion, frankly no polls (national or local) are 100 percent right, but at least it is more respectable than the PrepCountry.com/GACA Coaches poll. They have Columbia all the way down at No. 7. Can you believe that, No. 7. Talk about people just looking at records and voting.

High School player you are totally right, but this year is a tad bit different from last year. Favors, Malone, and Nick are gone. Not takin anything away from South Atlanta, but this is not the same battle tested team as the past. Just my opinion

In all fairness Liberty county featuring(Rion Brown-U Miami signee & Jordan McRae- UT Vols signee) and Elbert County featuring( Rod Rucker & Tray Heard) along with Jershon Cobb Northwestern signee and the Columbia Eagles are the real favorites for the Class AAA championship. South Atlanta are the reigning AAA champs so all have to beat them for now. Just my opinion!!!

Northgate Vikings scored 27 points in a game. Its truely painful to watch these boys laughed at week after week. Coach has dragged this program to the bottom of the fish tank. Sandy Creek showed mercy 67-27. New coach is in order. Five seasons and counting.

Westlake High School which is a true bball program will just rest in the wings why we get no pub. We no why we dont get the pub Milton, Walton, and Wheeler does so we dont have to talk about that. We have already beaten USA today #23 in the nation Rice this year. Also the #1 team in NC. Before that we defeated Centennial, so we coming and definetly dont want the pub till we have the state title. Also SOuth Atlanta led by great coach Micahel Reddick also a former Westlake assistant will be in the championship game this year. Truth be told they may be more dangerous than last year with a lot more to prove. They have 2 or 3 solid players and plays nationally as well!!!!

Greetings Northside Observer,

Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Girls Basketball has been a good team. In fact, a great Basketball team for two years now. They will do very well this season as they did last season. They should have been ranked last season as well. Look at their record from last year and who they have beaten. They also have beaten North Georgia schools this year as well losing only in overtime in a tournament to Region 8-AAAA Rockdale County. Region 3-AAAAA are not only on the map for football, but Basketball as well.

D nice,

Doean’t matter. Look at Bradwell Institute Ladies record last year and this year. Who they have played and who they have beaten. No need to think over it. It is what it is…. Bradwell Institute should be ranked even higher than some of the Schools in the Top 10, but I can accept 10 for right now. Loom at the Region record and overall Record of the Lady Basketball teams in Class AAAAA and then look at Bradwell Institute Ladies Basketball Team Region, and Overall Record. Then comeback to me with a response.

Boyd has ruined the Milton basketball program for homegrown students. Over half of the basketball team has been recruited in and there are no seniors on the team even though they have good talent. Hardly anyone at the school knows the basketball players personally. Boyd shows poor sportsmanship and has personally cursed out players and students. His affair with another teacher at another high school which caused him to resign shows his true character.

When is Northgate basketball going to get a new coach? His temper tantrums and total lack of judgement has made us look like bumkins. We are laughed at week after week.4-16 and counting. There answer is blame the players year after year.
