Basketball: We’re safe with Milton, Redan

I’m not apolgozing for what you’re about to read, but I’m going to give you thyis: It’s a real challenge doing basketball rankings before school re-starts in January. Scores, coaches and your peers in the media are hard to track down during the holidays.

We just hope we’re close this week and can make some adjustments. We’re going to take a stab at this each week. By ”we,” I mean myself and colleague Chip Saye, who compiled the girls rankings. I did the boys.

Questions for the gallery –

Is Region 6-AAAAA justified in having four boys teams in the top five? If so, has there been a better region in Georgia? Must be fun if you’re a hoops fan in the North Fulton/East Cobb area. Great games every week.

Is Milton that good? I hear coach David Boyd is talking about a run at a national title in 2011. He doesn’t have a senior on his team.

How good is South Atlanta without Derrick Favors?

What is the best girls team? Redan and Buford have winning streaks of better than 35 games. Parkview beat a team East Meck?) that someone had ranked No. 1 in the country. Wesleyan is Wesleyan.

And finally, who’d we miss in these rankings? I think we’re safe with Milton and Redan. Hope this is a good starting point for us. We’ll adjust as we go and try to come out with rankings each week.

Are Milton basketball & football players really reflective of the local talent? According to my 16 year old neice, who attends Milton, the school buses in student from south Fulton county to enhance their key sport teams. Pretty sad if it’s true.

You can not go wrong with Southside studs playing in the North Fulton/East Cobb suburbs in AAAAA ball. I am suprised Westlake kept enough players to even be ranked in the top 10. I know the other Southside high schools are hurting.

I’m like look like another one, back to back champiomships for Mays. But no the guys tell me they’re Wheeler and are sophmores. So I say you live willis Mill…. they say” I know but…. Actually, two of the Milton starters are “homegrown”, both Nolte and Royal attended middle school in Milton. Two others moved to the district. Rumor has it they followed Boyd, as is their right, if they felt that was their best chance for a future scholarship. Only one starter may come from South Fulton, but several other students at Milton are bused in. Regardless of their reasons, it takes a certain amount of dedication to put up with that commute every day. Forget about the football team. The vast majority of the players are not from out of the area.

If I was a parent who had supported the Milton basketball feeder teams all along, I would feel the way many others do, that their kids were shunted aside for outsiders. But, that’s the chance you take with basketball. Only five players are on the court, and at the varsity level, they will be the best five the coach has.

Just wondering…why does it take so long for the High School basketball blogs to get up and going?? The state of GA always has some grade A talent but a lot of teams have played anywhere between 10-15 games before there is even a mention of basketball on ajc.com

I’m a big fan of the 6-AAAAA region, with Wheeler being a favorite. With that being said, Wheeler is going to struggle this year. The other teams are super strong and Wheeler lost a lot of talent last year to the ACC. Ryan Harrow of Walton High School is playing some of the best basketball in the state right now. It’s amazing how someone with such a slight frame plays so well in this region where there are a lot of tough players. I’m looking forward to this week with Walton/Milton. I wish that the state of Georgia held a Christmas tournament that had teams from other states coming in playing against our local talent instead of all of our teams going everywhere to play.

See you all @ the Gwinnett Center in March!!

Wheeler still has a handful of D1 prospects in Phil Taylor, Joey Jerome, Chuck Mitchell, Karl Cochran, and Jelan Kendrick. The talent is there to beat anybody… even Milton, but will they put it together at the end? We’ll see. I’ve seen all the top-4 Region-6 teams play this year and I would actually rank them Milton, Centennial (right now), Wheeler, and then Walton because the Raiders like last season still give up too many points on the inside and gamble too much on defense.

If kids are bused in according to the rules than so be it. If the parents have a problem then get the school board to change the rules. Otherwise send your kids to AAU or there will always be kids from another area playing at your local school. Personnally I like to see it done on the court no matter what school a kid attends. Do like Gwinnett County. They built a sports academy to help their kids. They did ok in football but was always losing in state basketball.

Really good basketball on the nortthside with the exception of Roswell. No matter what the reason, the kids seem to want to go to a school where they can win. You cant blame a kid for wanting to take basketball very serious and play at a great basketball school with a chance at exposure for a scholarship. Milton and Centenial look really good this year. Both are solid academic schools and give talented boys an opportunity for a scholarship. Too bad that Roswell basketball is in the middle of these 2 great basketball programs but has an awful basketball program and cant even finish at 500 over the past 2 seasons. Milton and Centenial will go deep into the tournament this season; while Roswell may only win 1 more basketball game this seaon. I guess evaluation of talent isnt important if you are a fan of Roswell basketball. Great talent in this region. Go Milton !

Roswell lost a couple players to FB that would’ve really helped them this year. They lost about 5 games by 1-2 points last year when they were really young. Sadly, a couple of those athletes didn’t come back.

The poll is pretty good for 5A with the exception of McEachern and Peachtree Ridge. I’m still not buying PR as having a significant impact. They just lost 2 of 3 at the Upward Classic.

McEachern is highly overrated and play in a very week region that is down. They don’t run anything offensively and are not as athletic as they’ve been in the past.

I think the teams you missed are South Gwinnett and Newton.

Region 6 is loaded as usual. Enjoy it for the last time as they are breaking up Wheeler/Walton apart from Milton/Centennial next year.

Greetings Todd,

Shouldn’t Bradwell Institute Girls be ranked? Look at last years performance, and this years performance. This team under Coach Faye Baker is exceptional. Besides Redan, What have the others done that Bradwell Institute Girls haven’t done that they would be ranked? Are you saying that Region 1 AAAAA Valdosta are better than Region 3 AAAAA Bradwell Institute? I looked at Valdosta schedule, and it is definitely not as tough as Bradwell’s. I looked at last years record, and Bradwell Institute Girls record far exceeded Valdosta’s. Here we go with the popular unfair bias right?

“Why isn’t Wheeler ranked at the top? Every year they are ranked below below number one and they always make it to the final four.”

Wheeler has lost to Centennial, so I didn’t feel we could rank the ‘Cats much higher at this point. But nobody is writing off Wheeler.

“I don’t remember the last time I saw a HS basketball poll without St. Pius or Marist represented in either the boys or girls side.”

Good observation. I don’t either.

“The poll is pretty good for 5A with the exception of McEachern and Peachtree Ridge. …

McEachern is highly overrated and play in a very week region that is down. ….
I think the teams you missed are South Gwinnett and Newton.”

I’ll keep an eye on SG and Newton. P’Ridge has a nice win over Norcross. McEachern doesn’t have many quality wins, so they do have something to prove.

re: North Clayton – Is the North Clayton-Forest Park result correct on GaSports? If so, NC lost to a 2-11 team. The other issue is that if you didn’t make the state tournament in 2009, you probably need a defining victory to be in the current Top 10. W-L record alone is not enough.

Great Leadership at Westlake

January 4th, 2010
2:55 pm

The talent that is going to Milton, Wheeler, Centennial et. al. can’t handle the system at Westlake. Darron Rogers wins because he teaches the guys to play as a TEAM. There’s no star system at Westlake. AAU superstars don’t thrive in this system. You get what you put in and Roger requires committment and plain old hard work. A deeply religious man his teams continue to finish at or near the top year in and out. We all can learn from him.

The reason ajc doesn’t cover High School basketball is because Todd and Chip are football guy’s and they don’t know anything about basketball except the obvious Redan girl’s and Milton’s boy’s are loaded. Really they’re # 1. I think my six month old son could figure that one. Remember all last year the Derrick Favors show on the ajc. Westlake is solid but to say Rogers coaches that team is by title only. Bo Bell really coaches that team but he can’t run the show officially w/o teaching.

It is too bad our teams do not compete as well in basketball as they do in football. NSWR always have a decent girls team but the boys team seem to stay around .500. Annually, we have girls teams that make the play-offs. For 1AAAAA this year todate, the region’s best boys team is Tift County and the girls Valdosta. Some of that may change.

Good point region 6 regarding Roswell basketball, however I heard from Roswell people that the basketball coach is not very good and many of the kids do not want to play for him. I believe that this is his 3rd year and they have never finished above 500. It looks like they may lose at leaste 20 games this year. I watched them play a few games and they are awful. The few games that I saw last year they seemed to have some talent but thier varsity coach was clearly lacking and looked overmatched amoung his region peers. The Roswell administration and community takes it’s football very serious; while varsity basketball seems to be a really bad joke. Too bad for the kids as there is enough talent at the school to field a competitive team; this coach is not very good and not well liked by many of the kids who can play. One parent said they won 1 game in a really weak tournament over the holiday in florida. There are no “weak” teams left on roswell region schedule and they will likely not win another game this year. Too bad for the boys…

Katie…..some schools in North Fulton do have buses that transport students from South Fulton but it is not because of athletics. The students who are bused to the North are coming from schools who do not meet academic standards set by the state. When this happens, the students have the choice of where they want to go to school. Now if that students happens to be a stellar athlete, well that is a plus for the school. However, it is a violation of about every rule in GHSA for a coach from a North school to go to the South and find a student at a lesser academic school and “recruit” them for the North school. It may happen on a small scale, but not as dramatic as your 16 year old niece may make it seem.

There is a reason Westlake High School is #2 in the state and should be ranked in the nation. We already beat Cenntenial handedly early in the year who already beat Wheeler. We beat the #18 team in the nation (Rice, NY) at that time during Christmas to win the Chic-Fil-A classic. Westlake is a program that doesnt recruit and relies off God’s grace, hard work, and dedication. People are quick to forget Westlake is a 2-time state champion and holds the Georgia High School record with a 33-0 record. This was before Bo Bell who recently arrived there, who by the way is a hell of a coach. Westlake will be in the state championship game against Milton or Wheeler. Both will be an upset victory in the eyes of the state!!! If students stayed at there home schools and didnt go up north the powerhouses would be Westlake, Banneker, Tri Cities, Mays, L. Hughes. Sorry North Fulton!!!! Cause we all kno where Jelan Kendrick is from and many other students who have made North Fulton dominant. Not all but most!!!!!!

You guys really have no idea of what you are talking about as far as ranking these team goes. Just to let u guys in on some strong facts…Ranking Columbia 3rd in AAA is the worst disrespect that you could have shown towards any school girls or boys.
For the people that dosent really know,Columbia has played the toughest schedule of any team in the state of Ga any class already and they are 11-4.
Facts#1 Columbia has played in 3 National tourneys in December alone. Midwest Shootout in Marion,Ill.They played the #1 and #2 ranked team in all of Illinois in Whitney Young And Waukegan record 1-1.
Facts#2 Week later they played in the prestigious Iolani classic in Hawaii winning against top ranked Hamilton of Arizona and #1 team in DC area Gonzaga prep which is top 25 national.Lost to #2 nationally Yates of Texas and #12 nationally Montross Christian Md. record 2-2 place 4th in Iolani.
Facts#3 Dec26-30 Beachball classic in Myrtle Beach: which also featured Wheeler and Jalen Kendricks. Lost in Championsip to Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas 54-52 whose only lost was to #1 team in the nation Findley Prep.3-1
In all of those battle tested tourneys and games #3 in AAA is what you think of Columbia? Yeah they could have stayed locally and played around the region but ultimately winning the state championship is the goal!! Not going 11-0 or 12-0 in Dec.
Fact#4 Jershon Cobb Northwestern signee is right now playin some of the best ball in the country. He was all tourney in Hawaii classic, Midwest shootout and MOP at Beachball classic with the same team that was battle tested against a powerful South Atlanta team with Favors last year in the state Semi.
Fact#5 Columbia still has National Powerhouse Oak Hill prep of Va and Arlington Country Day of FL. left on schedule for Jan. to help prepare for state tourney.
If that schedule alone doesnt make a good team great in AAA class, Dr. Phil McCrary dont know what else to do for his eagles!!!
Im not takin anything away from any team ,im just wondering why #3 in AAA.When the basketball nation thinks so highly of Columbia and Ajc dont!!!!!!

Nolesfan States:
Are you serious Sportsfan31313, Bradwell Institute girl’s lost to Rockdale County girl’s. Not a good thing, that alone would keep them out of the polls.

Greetings NolesFan,

I don’t know much about Rockdale County, but I do know a lot about Bradwell Institute Girls Basketball Program. They have a very good program under Coach Faye Baker, they were number one in region 3-AAAAA, and they did exceptionally well last year losing to Redan in the (elite eight) quarter finals. Redan went on to win the State State Title the following week. This year, they are again number one in their region, and they have beaten………… Well let me state my case.

Overall Record: 10-1, 0.909
Region Record: 2-0, 1.000
Other Seasons: 2004-05 2005-06 2006-07 2007-08 2008-09

Date Day Time Opponent Location/Score
Nov 20 Fri 6:00 PM Long County (2-AA) Won 70-26
Nov 24 Tue 4:00 PM Groves (3-AAAAA) Won 76-34
Nov 25 Wed 4:00 PM Liberty County (3-AAA) Won 62-53
Dec 01 Tue 6:00 PM Coffee (1-AAAAA) Won 54-41
Dec 04 Fri 7:00 PM Groves (3-AAAAA)* Won 59-45
Dec 05 Sat 6:00 PM Coffee (1-AAAAA) Won 43-25
Dec 11 Fri 7:00 PM Jenkins (3-AAAAA)* Won 70-35
Dec 19 Sat 2:00 PM South Gwinnett (8-AAAAA) Won 58-39
Dec 21 Mon 12:30 PM Rockdale County (8B-AAAA) Lost 52-57, (OT)
Dec 22 Tue Riverdale (4-AAAAA) Won 62-47
Jan 02 Sat 6:30 PM Long County (2-AA) Won 92-24

Now with that being said, That was a tournament they had, where they lost in overtime to Rockdale County. But does that mean that they should not be ranked? Absolutely not. I believe that had they beaten Rockdale County, they still wouldn’t have been ranked. Again, I am stating my case as I did earlier. Bradwell Institute girls deserves to be there.

Greetings Northside Observer,

Happy New Year,

I believe in South Georgia this year, Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute Girls are the team to beat. Normally the Savannah Schools usually runs the table in Basketball, but lately, Bradwell Girls has been exceptional. In Region 3 the two teams (Girls) to beat last year was Savannah’s Beach High, and Bradwell Institute High School. This year, it is Bradwell Institute Girls Basketball. and then everybody else. I believe that they will do even better than last year.
You know, I was looking at the current record of the Girls Baskettball in class AAAAA. The only schools that are undefeated are Redan, Parkview, and Valdosta. Bradwell lost one (non region game) Westlake lost two, North Cobb lost one, Campbell lost three, Norcross lost two, McEachern lost three, Mill Creek lost three, lost one region game, and they are not number one in their region. Stephenson, lost two, (and they are not even number one in their region). With that being said Northside Observer, is it not North Georgia Bias? I know that AJc would argue that they are not, but the proof is in the win loss records, and lets not even begin to talk about strength of schedule either.

Northgate basketball in Coweta County is in a similar situation as “roswellbasketballfan”. Parents and players would cherish a change in boys coaches. Coach has 28-103 record in five plus seasons. Why would any adminstration keep a coach so long with such a dismal record? He is big buddies with the Athletic Director and Principal. Never even came close to a winning season. They blame the players every year. He is the only constant in this night mare.

Its funny how people and this paper forget who they saidplayed the best basketball the last five years. Region 6-AAAA. Tucker, Miller Grove, Stone Mountain and Columbia moved to 3A last year. The State title has come from region 6-A the last four years. Tell me if any other region that has done this. Look at the talent they have prduced. Tucker–Jeremey Simmons(College of Charleston), Marshawn Brooks(Providence), Manny Atkins(Virginia Tech). Stone Mountain–Terrell Bell(Virginia Tech), Andrew Golata(College of Charleston), Miller Grove–Mufon and Steven Hill(Ga. Tech) and Columbia–(Jeremey Price and Travis Leslie (Georgia) D. Morrow(East Carolina) and there are still many more I haven’t named but all of these young men played in region 6-A from 2006–2009 where the state title remains. And this crop of young men will also bring the state title back to region 6-A Tucker or Miller Grove.

Boyd has ruined the Milton basketball program for homegrown students. Over half of the basketball team has been recruited in and the class of 2010 has been totally left out even though they have good talent. Hardly anyone at the school knows the basketball players personally. Boyd shows poor sportsmanship and has personally cursed out players and students. His affair with another teacher at another high school which caused him to resign shows his true character.
