Sandy Creek’s Isaiah Johnson, NE Macon’s Michael Palmer are MVPs of GACA All-Star football game

Chat with the AJC's Michael Carvell

Happy Holidays from the AJC's Michael Carvell

Hutson Mason and Connor Shaw, the highly-touted quarterbacks for the North team, combined for a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter of the 27-20 loss to the South in Tuesday’s GACA All-Star high school football game.

The South, led by Northeast Macon’s Michael Palmer, built a 24-0 advantage before allowing any points. Palmer threw a 55-yard touchdown pass, and also had a 70-yard scoring reception.

With 27 seconds remaining in the third, the North finally got on the scoreboard after a 52-yard fumble return by Sandy Creek’s Isaiah Johnson.

In the final minutes, Mason connected with Alpharetta’s Michael Bennett on a 28-yard touchdown pass. They have both pledged to sign with UGA.

For Sandy Creek DB Isaiah Johnson (No. 37 in white jersey), December has been the best football month of his life. Johnson has committed to Georgia Tech (AJC file)

Shaw, who has committed to South Carolina, threw a 15-yard scoring strike to Blessed Trinity’s Jake Skole.

Johnson, who recently led Sandy Creek to its first-ever state championship, was the North MVP. The hard-hitting safety has committed to Georgia Tech.

Palmer was the South MVP, while LaGrange’s Joe Mansour booted field goals of 46 and 27 yards for the South.

sims great athlete no qb,conner shaw very smart could become big time qb under spurrier, mason has size and ability to be a pro type qb,may never get the chance at ga where 5′10 qbs are what they like, however marshall kid is what you win championships with can get it done if he goes to ga.can’t help but be the qb with mason backing him up only place he probably wouldn’t be as good is in the tech offense

Asa, agree, Sims is awful. Shaw legit. And Marshall is the one we want, Mason shouldn’t keep him away. No contest between the two. Don’t agree with the 5′10″ though. Stafford was pretty good, loyalty got the best of Richt.

Mr. Carvell, or anyone else who can answer.

Michael Palmer, this is the first time I have heard of him, any idea if he is going to college for football? I know that NE Macon is not usually considered a bastion of academic excellence, so will grades be an issue for him?

Also, on Skole, will he be playing baseball and football in college, or is he a possible high draft pick in the MLB draft?

Where is the kicker, Mansour going? Sounds like a possible prospect.

Thanks,
Joe

Hye ASA, name me ONE quarterback at UGA that was 5′10″ tall. You have no idea what you are talking about. Let’s see, David Greene – 6′4″, Schockley – 6′4″, Stafford – 6′3″, Cox -6′0″. While your at it, how about breaking out the old English book and look up capitalization and punctuation.

I attended the game and was honestly not impressed with Hutson Mason or Connor Shaw. Shaw is the better of the 2 qb’s as it appeared that Hutson Mason had trouble avoiding the south pass rush and getting the ball down field to open receivers many times. Connor Shaw appeared to have more upside at the next level. The north offensive line seemed to struggle against the south linemen. The north offense which was some type of wingT did not complement the talented running backs or receivers that were on the field. The South coaching staff appeared to have the boys much more prepared that the boys on the north team; perhaps it was the offensive plays did not complement the talent on the north team. Congtrats to the boys who were named to the team and it’s great that none of the boys got injured.

to Joe Micheal Palmer is a great athlete who is 5-11 180 pounds who has elite speed and will probaly play another position in college…………ps just because a kid goes to in inner city school does not mean he can’t qualify for college some the worlds most talented people emerge from those hallways

allstarfan, I may have to agree with you about the game. The South def pass rush dominated the North offensive line. I was truly not impressed with the QBs but they were running for their lives all game. They did miss alot of open WRs down field. I saw at least three chances for a long touchdown that were missed. Once there was an open North WR all alone down field.

I agree with “big texs” Qentin Brown of Tucker was making plays consistently and probably was probably overlooked for mvp because he did not score a touchdown, but you heard his name constantly from the anouncers for making big plays on defense.

The quarterbacks for the south outplayed the norths qbs. And the south defense was definitely the more aggressive.

Mike Palmer is a beast! He won the region by his self! Literally on his own!I went to one of his games and he quarterbacked, ran the ball, caught the ball, returned kicks and even kicked. It was crazy! I been following him in basketball too. They have lost one game now and its was bc he didnt play cause he was playing in the north south football game
