Final rankings: At least we agree on who’s No. 1

Throughout the season, we hear that the only rankings that matter are the final rankings. Then when the final rankings come out, we find that those are the most controversial of all.

These are the ones that live in history. So I hope I haven’t messed them up too badly.

Now, a look back at the finals. If I were a head coach, or a fan of a particular school that’s playing for a championship, I might feel differently, but as a fan of high school football in general who lives within easy driving distance of the Georgia Dome, it’s pretty nice having the finals in one spot.

Congrats to Wilcox County and Sandy Creek for winning their first state titles. Before the playoffs, I claimed that only SWD and Griffin could win AAAA. That wasn’t smart. On the other hand, I’m proud that I stuck w/ Wilcox in the rankings when others didn’t after the Pats lost two games. One of my favorite posts: “Can you guys explain to me how a two-loss Wilcox Co. team gets the nod … ? … Man you guys haven’t got a clue!”

We also stuck w/ Camden County w/ two losses. That was a weekly source of contention, but I will add that many Poll Talk bloggers came to my defense on that one. Rule of thumb for ranking teams: When you’re not sure, trust history. Camden is the most improved state champion in the big class from Week One to Week 15 since perhaps Brookwood in 1996.

We never ruled out Buford. When the playoffs started, I picked Buford. When the draw was changed and Buford was seeded to travel to Fitz, I picked Fitz. When game time came, I picked Buford again. Class AA was a lot of fun this year, for a chance, because Buford was beatable. But the Wolves ruled in the end.

Gainesville-Peach was one of the best finals I’ve seen. (So was Wilcox-Savannah Christian.) The defense in the AAA final was intense and vicious on both sides. Good high school football.

Finally, who would be your statewide player of the year? Da’Rick? Ogletree? Sims? Nick Marshall? Ean Days? Mason?

“Can you give us your top 10 projections for 2010…Of course I’m only concerned about AAAA??”

I don’t have enough info yet on who’s returning what, but my guess is that Northside would be #1 and that Clarke Central, returning 14 starters, would be top 2-5. Warner Robins would figure to be top 10, also. Tucker had a very strong junior class this year and should be a big factor in ‘10. And I’ve been hearing TCC is loaded. ; )

“Hey Todd – what about the earlier suggestion tucked into my rant – how about a top 15 ranking of best HS RBs out of GA? (not that you have anything else to do.”

“Hey GO UG, you may not know this but coaching in Dekalb County is different, than coaching in Colquitt, Lowndes, NSWR, and Camden County. NO ONE in Dekalb has the huge coaching staffs those schools do, also take into account the Facilities for year round training those schools have. You cant make a fair comparison and say this coach would have done this, and this coach would have done that. Not when all things are not equal my friend. You have to remember this is Dekalb County, NOT Henry County which is what you are used to. It’s a completely different ballgame here in Dekalb, which is why a lot of TOP coaches dont even give first thought about coaching here, despite all the talent. We do have some TOP coaches here in Dekalb, Tucker has the best community support in all of Dekalb County, but even they don’t compare with what the other Boosters in other counties are able to do. We simply cant raise the kinds of money like our neighbors who aren’t under county rule can. Now do you still think it’s as easy as you make it sound???”

Lots of truth in this post, DeKalb Watcher.

Stephenson Jag, Coach Jarvis did a great job during regular season, with the exception of the Stephenson game; however, it seems during the playoffs and big games like Stephenson he forgets how to call appropriate plays…he succombs to the hype!

@ Tom L.: I’m not sure which Apalachee games you watched, but at the ones I saw, the home side was stoked and ready well before kickoff. The ‘Chee had a monster run this year, until they admittedly got chewed up by Griffin. Even then, the ‘Cats didn’t fold, they just got beaten by a team with better talent and blazing speed. And the point I made on some posts in earlier weeks was that Apalachee didn’t overwhelm too many people, but always (okay, until week 13), found a way to win. Doesn’t matter by how much, as long as you have one more point than the other guy when time expires. Apalachee’s players buckled up tight and traded blow for blow all year until the other guy blinked. That’s what wins ball games and wins region titles.

8-AAAA ought to be loaded again next year. Clarke is back big time. Apalachee loses, I believe, its entire backfield, but had a lot of solid kids on both sides of the ball.Rockdale took us all by surprise (and beat CC in the regular season), and Loganville had gained some consistency in the last couple of ears. And you can never count out Habersham Central and Cedar Shoals. Should be interesting, and we’ll just have to prove once again that some mighty good football is played beyond the Gwinnett County line….

With all of those returning starters from Clarke Central, they will definitely be there, and force to be reckoned with. Heck, I would vote them to be pre-season ranked No 1. in Class AAAA.

wdeagle,

I was at the Marist/Apalachee game and the referees did not call illegal crack back blocking penalties they called blocking below the knees, the defensive player cannot dive at the knees or lower to take out the player doing the offensive blocking new rule but still a rule to protect against injury.

I know that normally it’s Marist getting those calls but this time “NOT”!

Jaybo: Wow! 8 offensive 7 Defensive starters returning for TCC. Okay, I doubt if NSWR will have to travel to deep south ga. twice. That is, to both TCC and Bainbridge, therefore, we will go to Bainbridge and TCC comes to WR. lol

I just saw where Harris County is partitioning the GHSA to play in another region. I second that! I have no desire to go to Pine Mlountain.

WinderDogg:

Dead on with the illegal blocking calls at the Marist/Apalachee game I was there also and those were the penalties called against Marist. Several of them, as wdeagle said, but they weren’t crackback calls.

Hell of a game, too, I might add.

Don’t yall find all this talk about TCC a bit boring…? I don’t get why Colquitt is behind Newnan. I can see why Lowndes is so high. Colquitt barely lost to Camden, Newnan got beat by Northside. Camden destroyed Northside. I personally feel like Colquitt was better than Northside. Especially at the end of the season.

Now there is no need to keep bring things tha NO one really cares about but you. GROW UP? You sound like a 12 year old. ONCE AGAIN I LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU FOR THE HATERS WHO SAID CAMDEN WASNT GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE THE RANKINGS OR WIN IT ALL THIS YEAR, JUST BECAUSE WE STARTED SLOW THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT WE ARE OUT OF IT..SO DONT EVER COUNT CAMDEN COUNTY OUT OF ANYTHING INTILL THE SEASON IS OVER..I TOLD YALL AFTER THE GRAYSON GAME WE LOST THAT WE WAS GONNA WIN IT ALL BECAUSE I SEEN THE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM IN THE MAKING..I TOLD YALL GRAYSON WASNT A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM BECAUSE THEY RELAY ON THEIR DEFENSE TOO MUCH TO WIN THEIR GAMES FOR THEM. PLUS THEIR OFFENSE WASNT ALL THAT GOOD AND PLUS I SEEN THEIR WEAKNESS IN THE DOMW BECAUSE THEY HAD A WEAK SECONDARY!!!! WE WAS A REAL YOUNG TEAM IN THE KORKY KELL CLASSIC, BUT I PROMISE YOU IF WE WAS TO MEET UP AGAIN WE WOULD HAVE BEAT GRAYSON, PLUS THE ONLY TEAM I CAN SHOW ALL OF MY RESPECT TO IS LOWNDES COUNTY…YALL WAS THE ONLY TEAM THAT I THOUGHT THAT COULD HAVE PUT CAMDEN OU TOF THE PLAYOFFS BUT IF IT WASNT FOR COACH HERRONS SMART MOVE BY KEEPING THE BALL WITH 9 MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME BECAUSE IF LOWNDES WOULD HAVE GOT THE BALL BACK IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT BALL GAME, BUT TO STEPHENSON FAN TALKING ABOUT THE THEIR THE BEST PROGRAM IN THE STATE, WELL BEFORE YOU CAN SAY THAT, GET A CHAMPIONSHIP RING FIRST OR EVEN REACH THE TITTLE GASME BEFORE YOU CAN SAY YOU HAVE A COMPLETE PROGRAM…BUT EVERYTIME WE PLAY THEM WE DOMOLISH THEM SO YOU KNOW WE HAVE YOU GUYS NUMBER!!! BUT THIS YEAR WAS THE REBUILDING YEAR FOR CAMDEN COUNTY SO IMAGINE WHAT IS GONNA HAPPEN NEXT YEAR, BUT IT SUCKS THAT WE DONT START IN THE DOME AGAIN!!! BUT WATCH OUT AAAAA WE ARE BACK AGAIN NEXT YEAR TO DEFEND OUR TITTLE, BUT MARK MY WORDS, “WE WILL WIN THE AAAAA TITTLE ONCE AGAIN NEXT YEAR I GUARANTEE YOU GUYS THAT”!!!!! LETS MAKE IT A 3 PEAT!!!! AND TELL GRAYSON TO GET A CHAMPIONSHIP RING BEFORE YOU GUYS THINK THAT YALL ARE A GREAT PROGRAM!!! CAMDEN ALL DAY OVER HERE!!!!!

rwdekalbfan said ” And there were not many Sandy Creek people on here bad mouthing other teams. Seems like a very classy program.”

Thanks for the compliment. We at Sandy Creek try really hard to be classy. It starts with our administration and coaches. They set the expectation and we as parents and boosters try to enforce it. We love winning football games, and what we found is this. If you help develop good young men on and off the field…winning takes care of itself.

We pride ourselves on having the best fans anywhere that love football and don’t badmouth other teams. Now don’t think that means we won’t stand up for our team, quite the contrary!

The fans of Clarke Central don’t engage in much of the trash talk, we try to be respectful. Now, personally I have a problem with us being ranked 3rd after losing to Sandy Creek in the title game.
We led 9-7 in the 4th quarter in the “Dome”, Griffin lost 22-15 at “Home” in the semifinals. AJC what
did Griffin do to deserve a better ranking? No other state championship runnerup got a ranking lower
than #2. Be fair and consistent in your process.

Congratulations to Sandy Creek on your title, you guys have a talented squad and deserve all the credit thats coming your way!

Camden chances of winning it again, is very high. Yes a lot of Sophmores made a major impact on a lot of games. A freshman starting at corner, and he should get more carries on the offensive side of the ball. A Freshman punter, who is the QB in waiting, who could probably start now. Two good recievers, and you know we keep plenty of backs. It will be at least 6 juniors (sophmores now)starting next year on defense, and a sophmore(freshman now). All started or played in every game not in mop up duty either. Oh by the way with our Starting QB is returning. And did you notice the size of those Sophmores. Our future look so good.4 in a row is not out of the possibility. These guys have two more years of football, and some with three left, I’m talking about young men who got significate playing time in real games, when the game was still in the balance, thats very valueable in building a program. JJ Green #5 is going to be special only a freshman, and our future QB in Ramsey, a Freshman. Its so amazing how the coaches are bringing these kids around. Both will play SEC Football

And may I say, that two of the schools joining them are new programs. Plus. Gainesville is the only team in that subregion who had a winning record in 2009. They will play a very weak schedule.

I think we can go ahead and rename Valdosta as “Loserville” as long as you are at the reign. I am excited about Coach T returning to the Savannah Metro area. I played for the man at Jenkins back in the fall of ‘85. He was a great coach as well as a positive role model to all of us. My children now attend Effingham County High School and we are excited about the future for us and our football program.

Dr. Cason, thank you once again for listening to those few in your ear because obvious you don’t know anything about football or a good coach when you see one!!! You better start praying we don’t ever see you guys in the playoffs because there is alot of good young talent up this way!!

Wildcatfan: Sayng she was no intented put down against Camden County football team.. It was just my military back ground. You guys have a great team and won fairly. It is common among the military and you should know this being in a Navy town. When no women served on ships any referrel to a ship was she. For example, she is a beautiful ship, it took a long time to sink her. Really, I just used the term without thinking it would offend.

Todd, while home sunday enjoying Peach County’s victory at the Dome,my son got up from the computer in disgust and said “Dad,look at this” It was your article on the Football Gods smiling on Luke Crowell, allowing him to stumble into a pass from Alabama bound Blake Sims to Notre Dame bound Tai-Ler Jones. If Luke never puts the pads on again it will be His decision. The last six months has been grueling for Him. Weekdays in the summer practicing football, weekends traveling around the South playing baseball. Luke has put your cheap shot behind him and moved on. Dad is calling you on it.

Todd:

Duval Smith of the Roswell Hornets should probably be considered one of the top 15 running backs from Georgia.

Roswell’s (10-2) only two losses were to teams that went 12-1 and finished in final 8. And we had our chance to beat Grayson in the sweet sixteen game, but made too many special team errors.

Also did you consider Roswell over Stephenson for the Top 10 in AAAAA and maybe Lassiter should have been ranked in Top 8.

slalom1 said “Notice I did not include Northside WR, Camden County, Grayson,Parkview, Brookwood, N. Gwinnett, and a handful of others.” At least some of the Gwinnett teams didn’t exist during those years. Kind of hard to be a powerhouse when you don’t exist. ;)

ATL Dawg, chill dude! You’re living in the past and making people believe our program has no class. Besides, we won that game so what gives?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! See you here next year and in the Dome next December! :)
