Throughout the season, we hear that the only rankings that matter are the final rankings. Then when the final rankings come out, we find that those are the most controversial of all.
These are the ones that live in history. So I hope I haven’t messed them up too badly.
Now, a look back at the finals. If I were a head coach, or a fan of a particular school that’s playing for a championship, I might feel differently, but as a fan of high school football in general who lives within easy driving distance of the Georgia Dome, it’s pretty nice having the finals in one spot.
Congrats to Wilcox County and Sandy Creek for winning their first state titles. Before the playoffs, I claimed that only SWD and Griffin could win AAAA. That wasn’t smart. On the other hand, I’m proud that I stuck w/ Wilcox in the rankings when others didn’t after the Pats lost two games. One of my favorite posts: “Can you guys explain to me how a two-loss Wilcox Co. team gets the nod … ? … Man you guys haven’t got a clue!”
We also stuck w/ Camden County w/ two losses. That was a weekly source of contention, but I will add that many Poll Talk bloggers came to my defense on that one. Rule of thumb for ranking teams: When you’re not sure, trust history. Camden is the most improved state champion in the big class from Week One to Week 15 since perhaps Brookwood in 1996.
We never ruled out Buford. When the playoffs started, I picked Buford. When the draw was changed and Buford was seeded to travel to Fitz, I picked Fitz. When game time came, I picked Buford again. Class AA was a lot of fun this year, for a chance, because Buford was beatable. But the Wolves ruled in the end.
Gainesville-Peach was one of the best finals I’ve seen. (So was Wilcox-Savannah Christian.) The defense in the AAA final was intense and vicious on both sides. Good high school football.
Finally, who would be your statewide player of the year? Da’Rick? Ogletree? Sims? Nick Marshall? Ean Days? Mason?

Think Camden actually showed huge improvement from the Grayson game or was it Grayson’s total domination of Camden during that game? I do recall Camden’s offense did nothing the entire game and Grayson blew them off the line and ran basic plays down their throats. Camden should send Christmas cards to Newnan.

Congratulations to Camden players, coaches and fans. A great season ending in the state championship. (Columbia Blue) show a little class if you have any. Your “fact” statement of Camden winning 1-AAAAA championship because they beat three teams from the region is stupid. To win the region you have to play seven, thats right seven teams in the region. Enjoy the victory it was well deserved. Looking forward to next season. Happy Holidays to all.

Congratulations Camden! Great game Peach County…Gainesville’s decision was mirror image of the championship Peach played in with Jacquez Green, my honey! Funny how history repeats… Be looking out for #5 JJ Green, the only freshman to start and make a HUGE difference on any team in the STATE…

Congrats to every team that is reconsized. But these polls are not perfect. They are several individuals; that feels that their school should not be left out. I don’t understand why you have schools that have 3 losses on this list. I am a MLK fan and we lost to 2 teams (Stephenson, Newnan) that made the list. Please explain?

Why not write an article about the Buford program…their advantages and why they don’t play up in classification. The tie-ins to the Gwinnett Football League and the influence Buford parents play on transfers into the system. Everybody in Georgia knows they’re playing better than AAAAA talent, especially on the line of scrimmage. Two D-1 commits on the line of scrimmage, a couple of more that will probably sign some where, and several youngsters who will probably sign D-1 scholarships one day.
Let’s face it. An open enrollment school in the midst of 15 AAAAA programs and the Hall County teams would have advantages.

The kid is a beast and 6′3 241lbs. He is probaby bigger than that, but that is what is posted on the Buford roster.

Hats off to Peach County. A team that was not even mentioned as much as
others especially those in the metro Atlanta area. It shows that great
hype thru words never dominates that of action. Never under estimate
the power of the relative unknown even when you had history in front of you to direct you.

BigBlue1’s comments about weight rooms, booster clubs, etc., sounds like a bunch of sour grapes. I bet he wants Obama to step in and “redistribute” some of the wealth.
Don’t get me wrong. Weight rooms, booster clubs, etc., are vital elements of most consistently successful programs. But these types of things are the result of PARENTS and COMMUNITIES that give actually a damn about their children. They don’t talk the talk; they walk the walk.
BigBlue1’s favorite team can have a weight room, a booster club, etc. – if the PARENTS and the COMMUNITY are willing to put forth the HARD WORK that it takes to build such things.
Just don’t complain about an “unlevel” playing field if you’re too lazy to do anything about it.

Now that Jarvis is leaving MLK maybe, just maybe we’ll get a coach that won’t choke during the Playoffs and who won’t make the same crazy calls; i.e. allowing your field goal kicker to do the kickoff when you know the ball will go no farther than 20 – 30 yards, and calling up the middle plays when you it’s 3rd down and 20+ yards to go for a 1st down…

yeah Todd – can even you agree that BLUE CHIP PLAYERS ARE MADE BY EXPOSURE, a kid can be the best that ever played the game but if his/her exploits never make it out of the stadium no one will ever know.
so if the team does not have a daily in its area which considers its part of its core readership the team and its players get little more than a box score as write ups if they are lucky. now and to this ever if both the mid majors and the king of the hemp(ajc) diminish off hand the the level of competition of some teams (as in the case of camden) while glorifying blowout victories of others over much smaller programs – you in effect do a disservice to all those kids without the benefit of a daily to accurately extol their accomplishments and in turn without the local exposure these kids gets no real exposure on the state level and in turn these teams and players get no exposure on the nationally level which in the end may cost these kids at a chance at a college education (full /partial scholarship offers) there are more than just the 50 or so school whose we see week in and out every fall
congrats to all the champs, the runner ups and every kids who got to participate this past season
happy holidays and for those moving on to the next level and those who return next year good luck!!

For TJ – Are you serious about Camden! Do you realize that when Camden played Grayson, that was there first game with that team losing 17 of 22 starters year ago. Camden did not who they were at that time. If Camden and Grayson played again now, I believe the results will not be the same. Stop being a poor loser. I, being older than dirt, remember the glory days of Valdosta (50’s) when no one wanted to play them, especially a Class B school from Camden County!!
with all the hoopla about North Georgia football, let me say this: There ain’t now, nor will there ever be any consistent football powers in AAAAA – statewide – like there are in South Georgia. An by South Georgia, I mean Brunswick across to Albany and south to the State Line.
You’re also talking about a population in that area that would fit into Gwinnett County! If South Georgia had the population N. Georgia has, there would NEVER be a “North Georgia Champion” in AAAAA. As it is, there’s no doubt in my mind there ever will be – population or not.

To those who are dissing Apalachee’s ranking – remember that 8-AAAA was the ONLY region in the state to have three out of four playoff teams in the quarters and two IN THE SEMIFINALS. Apalachee earned every yard and point it made this season, going 10-0 to win its first region title and then winning two overtime games in the first two rounds. the ‘Cats beat Marist in one of the best finishes I’ve witnessed in years and some of you still don’t want to give the them their due. Yes, Griffin manhandled Apalachee, but on that particular Friday night, there were only SIX other AAAA teams still playing. yours probably wasn’t one of them. Deal with it.

The prblems that I have with your final rankings are all in AAAA. It looks like you find it hard to accept that you were wrong about your AAAA teams Todd. You ranked the losing team 2nd in every classification except AAAA….something is very wrong with that picture!!! The AJC had anointed Griffin or SWD as the champions in AAAA, but when it didnt happen, you arrange your final rankings in a way that reflects your aphixation with those teams. No way should Griffin be #2….should be Clark Central…just be consistent. Now of course, I dont think SWD should be ranked higher than TCC.

@Sailor – Are serious, Gainesville’s Principal said that? LMAO!
Back to the Peach County game – Gainesville’s coach did right by going for two in my opinion and he may have talked it over with the players prior to the play. I was sitting behind that team after my Trojans beat them and although they were somber, there appeared to be no second-guessing from any of them. My only question is why not ride your stallion (Blake Sims) for the final few yards. His arm may be shaky but that kid’s legs and avoidability are THE TRUTH!!! Well enough of those losers – HOW BOUT DEM TROJANS?!!! Luke Crowell should have been the MVP of the game. Don’t know where he will be playing in the Fall but that young man’s work ethic and desire proved to be more of a factor than the Notre Dame, Alabama and Tennessee recruits that Gainsville trotted out. That’s the epitome ofPeach County, we may not get all the press but we get the job done.

Any large school needing a head coach, especially Valdosta, should offer it to Coach McWhorter from Charlton County without even interviewing anyone else. Very few, if any, coaches even begin to come close to getting out of their players what he and his staff do year after year after year. If he can produce the results he has playing up in AA for so long with less than 500 students, he certainly can do it at Valdosta which will be playing up in AAAAA the next two years. I’m sure Uncle Nick, my 8th and 9th grade coach at West Rome, would approve, if he could. Why go out of state looking for a “proven” winner when someone like Coach McWhorter who understands true South Georgia Football is a few miles away, and has, at times, played Lowndes and Camden County more competitively than has Valdosta?

Just because you advance further in the postseason doesn’t make you better than a team you didn’t face. That is like saying because Griffin didnt make it to the dome Clarke Central is better than them. Its not necessarily true.

Nick Marshal for all-classification best player in the state!!!!!!!
WHO DID HE BEAT?
The undefeated defending state champion as well as two other undefeated teams in the five game playoff format. Not shabby for a junior!
WHAT DID HE DO?
Engineered three fourth quarter comebacks against three teams in the playoffs.
WHAT DID HE DO IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME?
This was one of his fourth quarter comebacks, and he broke Savannah Christian’s heart as he alluded tacklers to complete THREE two point conversions.
Mark Ledford for all-classification coach of the year!!!!
WHAT DID HE DO?
Not enough space here to tell! Savannah Christian had twelve coaches listed in the GHSA program. It was Ledford and four other coaches against those numbers. Ledford cant even play a home playoff game because Clack Stadium in Rochelle doesnt seat enough fans to qualify as a playoff field. In the final game for the championship he went for two those three times and made it every time. Peach County won only because Gainesville could not make one two point conversion. He plays with players from one of the poorest counties in the state with less than 400 total students. The county has tractors, cotton, peanuts, and lately plays a little high school football. Ledford is a Wilcox native because nobody elso wants the job or would be willing to live in “an out of the way place”.
Ledford keeps reloading supposedly when his best players have gone. Alphonso Dennard to Nebraska after 2007 title loss to ECI.

Don’t forget that Camden lost to Grayson due to a bad coaching call. Remember Camden was up 10-7 with 7 minutes to go in the game. It was 4th and a long 2 on their own 40 and the coach decided to go for it with a QB sneak. The problem was that the QB at the time was a 5ft nothing little dude that did not have a chance up against that DL. If Herron punts the ball and makes Grayson drive the length of the feild, it could have been a very different result. I blasted him for that call then and I still do now. But since he won the title, all that has been forgotten and his angel wings keep on growing in Camden.

Jaybo: In the off season, you should embrace saying a couple of names. One is Northside. I know you already know those words. You had your eye fixated on our great program a few years ago. Then, of course, as you were inaccurately comparing the winning traditions of Northside to Thomas County Central, your boys from TCC were getting Peachtree Ridged by Ware County at home.
I highly encourage you to remain focused on everyone joining the party, especially a Middle Georgia program with 4 State Championships and 2 National Championships. If you believe that Region 1-AAAA is going to be a two team party, you are fooling yourself. I promise you that Warner Robins HS will have a big say in the conversation. I expect Houston County will be heard too against program like TCC and Lee County.
Houston County schools played in the second highest classification for a four season run this decade. Every season saw a Warner Robins high school program in the AAAA State Championship. These are FACTS Jaybo. It started in 2004. In that season, Warner Robins won the State Championship. In the following season, Northside lost in the State Championship at Statesboro. Northside won the State Championship in 2006 & 2007. Ironically, TCC was NEVER in that conversation. NEVER. Let’s have a small dose of reality here Jaybo. Proclaiming that Northside and TCC are going to be the top 2 teams in Region 1-AAAA before the season even starts is very disrespectful to one of the premiere programs, Warner Robins, in this state and this nation. Warner Robins has a State Championship this decade. Warner Robins has 2 National Championships. Ironically, TCC has ZERO State Championships this decade and have NEVER sniffed a National Championship.
Show some respect Jaybo or some respect is going to be forced upon you.
Roll your eyes. Warner Robins is MUCH better than you think, if you are going on record proclaiming that Region 1-AAAA is set for Northside, 1, and TCC, 2 in 2010. We are to assume that you are saying Northside 1 and TCC 2. Right?
I say Northside or Warner Robins 1. Northside or Warner Robins 2. TCC 3. Houston County 4….if TCC is lucky. After playing for years in Region 1-AAAAA, what do you think playing a program like TCC is going to be like to players from Warner Robins and Houston County. Give us a break! HoCo may have gone winless against the likes of Lowndes County, Valdosta, Northside, Warner Robins, and Colquitt County. That means that the Bears should be primed to beat a program like TCC. What are you guys at TCC, just over 0.500 for your program’s history?
You have already started with the jokes for 2010. Northside and TCC 1, 2.
That is one of the funniest posts that I have read in weeks.
Warner Robins will VIOLATE Thomas County Central. Watch. You know what Northside is going to do in AAAA, Jaybo. Every poster on this blog knows.
