For the AJC
Football fans of a certain age might remember “Leonard’s Losers.” The long-running syndicated radio show, which featured the late Leonard Postero of Athens predicting which teams would lose college and pro football games, aired on more than 1,400 stations during its heyday. The show was popular because of Postero’s humor and down-home style, but he also was quite accurate with his predictions.
Last week, I was successful in picking the loser in 12 of the 20 quarterfinal games. Unlike what Postero did on his show, however, I was trying to pick the winners. Not good. Considering my inability to spot the winners last week, I figured I’d stick with what worked and pick the losers for the semifinals.
Class AAAAA
I didn’t see Colquitt County being able to stop Lassiter last week. I might be just as wrong this week, but I don’t see the Packers beating Camden County tonight, either. … Northside-Warner Robins avoided a quarterfinal loss to Peachtree Ridge last week by the narrowest of margins, winning 20-17 in three overtimes. The Eagles won’t be so fortunate this week, losing at Newnan. … Speaking of Newnan, Alec Ogletree made perhaps the catch of the year last week when his leaping, one-handed grab for a touchdown provided the winning points against Grayson. … Semifinal losers: Colquitt County, Northside.
Class AAAA
Clarke Central and Griffin used to be the North Georgia powers in the highest classification, two of the few teams that could stand in the way of Valdosta and another state championship. Neither has been as successful since dropping to Class AAAA, although Griffin has had some very good teams, and Clarke Central has almost always been competitive. They haven’t faced each other since 1993, and they haven’t met in the postseason since 1982, so the prospect of them battling for the state championship next weekend is an intriguing one. It will happen after Rockdale County, which beat Clarke Central in the regular season, loses the rematch tonight and Sandy Creek loses to Griffin. … Semifinal losers: Rockdale County, Sandy Creek.
Class AAA
Gainesville is the closest thing to a clear-cut favorite as there is in any classification. The No. 1-ranked Red Elephants already have proved that they can win big against tonight’s opponent, beating Flowery Branch 49-17 in the regular-season finale. And while Flowery Branch was impressive in its come-from-behind victory against No. 2 Carver-Columbus last week, I don’t see the Falcons being able to make up the 32-point gap against Gainesville. … I didn’t pick Eastside to win either of its previous two games, and the Eagles proved me wrong. I’m identifying the losers this week, so I’ll take Eastside to lose again, this time to Peach County. … Semifinal losers: Flowery Branch, Eastside.
Class AA
T his classification has had the fewest surprises of any, as the No. 1 (Calhoun), No. 2 (Fitzgerald), No. 3 (Buford) and No. 6 (Lovett) teams reached the semifinals, and all four have legitimate shots at winning the championship. But I have to pick two of them to lose tonight. I’ll say it’s going to be a disappointing night for Region 6-AA. … Semifinal losers: Lovett, Buford.
Class A
My worst performance last week came in Class A, where I picked Wesleyan, Twiggs County, Holy Innocents’ and Lincoln County, only to see all four eliminated. That means the Wesleyan-Twiggs County matchup I was anticipating in the final is out the window, too. Darlington has more losses than any team remaining in any classification, and I look for it to add one more to that total at the hands of undefeated Savannah Christian. … Can the only No. 2 seed remaining in Class A make it to the final? When Clinch County loses to Wilcox County, the answer will be yes. … Semifinal losers: Darlington, Clinch County.
Playoff predictions
Last week: 8-12 (.400); Overall: 1,603-411 (.796)

I would really like to play lovett in the finals for that reason, 3-4 years ago that is how calhoun beat fitz in semi’s qb bombs and the wr scores, but I believe lovett peaked to early and calhoun will dominate lovett

I am excited that Griffin is back again in the semis…looking for them to finally push through again and make it to the finals! And, I love seeing these Bear fans coming out on these blogs and showing support. Very tough game this Friday…should be pretty physical. I’ve seen a few games this year, and da Bears’ defense is scary good. BTW, the ajc has supported Griffin – in fact, a few weeks ago, they were picked in the finals with SW Dekalb (which obviously won’t happen – sorry Region 6). I’m hoping for GHS/CC final – my hometown in Griffin and my college town in Athens.

gaobserver….You are right, no one will beat Camden if they play like they did against NG. But having said that, who’s to say they will? Colquitt has defied the odds to this point, so don’t be so positive about this outcome. I think Camden pulls it out in a close one, but it could easily go the other way. Chip, picking Newnan to win makes sense. They are at home, they’ve called for a “Blue Out”, and they beat Grayson. Which will make the Northside win that much sweeter.

I’m a fan of the Griffin Bears and while I don’t think this is the best collecction of talent the Bears have bpasted in the Steve Devoursney era, they are indeed the best team. It really is a complete package.
With that stated as my opinion, it is also my opinion that Sandy Creek will give us all we want tomorrow night. The strengths of the Patriot defense match up very well with what we like to do offensively.
I think the difference, in the end, will be that the Bears have always done a good job in limiting the best player on the opposing team. That would be RB Rajion Neal in this case. I think the speed of the Griffin defense will hold him down somewhat and that will lead the team on to the finals.
Even if I’m wrong, expect a really competitive game.

Anyone who thinks Colquitts “D” can’t stop Camden needs to go read the Marietta Daily Journal. Lassiters QB quoted,”If that isn’t the best defense in the state of GA, I don’t know what is.” The Packers are okay with going in as underdogs. We are used to getting no respect. I also heard the NSWR coaches show and the comment made on there. Someone commented that they “would not pick the Packers if they had to.” Wander why that is…Afraid they may have to face us again. There would not be anything that happened last time (Packers getting cheated out of a down!). I say lets pull out another upset this week PACK!!

I am glad to finally see someone from up the Atlanta way have Camden up for the win this Friday night. I don’t think you are wrong. To Pack 1989,the only reason the Lassiter QB can make that kind of statement is because they have not played CAMDEN, QB’s can say what ever they want to about a team that just beat them, but if you don’t have anything to judge them by other than they just beat you, U HAVE NOT PLAYED CAMDEN. SEE YOU AT THE GREAT WILDCAT STADIUM.

North Gwinnett played their first opponent from South of the Gnat line last Friday night. Result: North Gwinnett loses. Peachtree Ridge played their second opponent from South of the Gnat line. Their first resulted in a 51-17 beatdown that no one will forget. Their second resulted in yet another team finding a way to pull defeat from the jaws of victory facing a backup quarterback, a backup running back, and a team of 10th graders. Result: Peachtree Ridge loses. Lassiter faced their first opponent from South of the Gnat line. Lassiter played on their own home field and received violation that no team deserves. Result: It is girls’ basketball seaaon at Lassiter HS.
Now, Newnan hosts a team from South of the Gnat line. We all know that Newnan is very, very talented. We know that they have a talented duo. However, Northside has faced a loaded Carver-Columbus team, the 3rd ranked team in the nation in Lowndes County, a talented Colquitt County team, a loaded Valdosta team, Peachtree Ridge, who opened this season as the 8th ranked team in America.
At what point does logic set in for you guys. Northside is the premiere program in the state of Georgia. We enjoy those who continue to doubt. Northside is going to the Georgia Dome. I know it and deep down inside, you know it too.

Pack1989: You are NOT quoting a player from Cobb County who actually thinks he knows what a great defense looks like. Come on Pack1989. You have got to stop. Is this comedy hour or what?
When you play programs like Pope, Walton, Kell, Roswell, etc, you are going to think that Colquitt County Middle School has the best defense in the state. All of these schools hang 35 points per game on one another. Cobb County high school football is similar to the Pac-10. No one is ever really hit. They just pull one another down.
Stop it! Stop quoting metro Atlanta kids making statements about football south of the Gnat line. I hope Colquitt County represents our region well. We all know that Colquitt County is far from a defensive juggernaut. Stop!
EagleNationRising
December 3rd, 2009
6:18 pm
Inthatrenches: There is not enough talent on the Newnan sideline to hang 20 points against Northside. The Eagles defense is not going to give up 20 points. You can write that down! You are playing South of the Gnat line football now. There are going to be players hit. There is going to be gang tackling. There are going to be quarterbacks sacked…blitzes…zone blitzes.
Football as Newnan Cougar players know it is about to get much more physical and much more complex in schemes. Trust me. It should be a great game. I am looking forward to it.

Here are my predictions for the Fourth Round (Final Four):
Class A
Clinch County wins close one over Wilcox County
Darlington sqeaks by Savannah Christian by a field goal
Class AA
Fitzgerald outlasts Buford in a battle for the ages
Calhoun will beat a good Lovett team but not without a fight though by The Lovett School
Class AAA
Peach County will handle Eastside and look forward to playing in the Dome next week.
Gainesville will get by Flowery Branch but this game will be a lot closer than there first battle though.
Class AAAA
Griffin will get by Sandy Creek in what many are calling the State Championship Game in AAAA, expect a great game because Griffin is a very good team.
Clarke Central will get by Rockdale County this time because its time for Rockdale County’s Cinderella Shoes to come on off.
Class AAAAA
Northside Warner Robins will really squeak by a great Newnan squad but it will really depend on who brings there “A” game because both teams are equally matched.
Camden County will outlast a good Colquitt County bunch that has just been shocking everyone these past couple of weeks.

Jon is right. All the Canes fans have every right to be proud of Fitz and obviously have a powerful offense, but the mere thought that you will put up 31 points on Buford indicates someone is probably on some kind of mind-altering chemical. I doubt that your offense is predictable, but if you are, you will be lucky to get 7 before the Buford coaches make a quick adjustment and make the rest of the night very frustrating. I hope it is the great game everyone expects and wish you both the best, but I have to pull for 6AA Buford.

Are you bloggers insane? Do Newnan and Northside even need to play if the championship game is in Kingsland? That’s nonsense. I was just making a statement since there was so much “trash talking” about how GREAT that Lassiters QB was and how he was unstoppable. No one gave us a chance over Lassiter that I knew of. As far as not playing anyone “south of the gnat line”, I could care less who they had or had not played!! They got a dose that “shut their mouths”. We Lovett fans truly appreciate so many “no dog in this fight” football observers expecting us to make a good showing Friday night, but we’re not looking for a moral victory. Our guys are much smaller than any other team we play, as usual, but they have been working hard for this for 3-4 years, and want it all. We’ll see. In talking to a family member of those now Georgia famous twins…this team seems to be more focused and hungry I hope Newnan wins and the reality is……… it is tough round…… no one at this point has had an easy track… I do not see a blowout I just think that a late TD by the Cougars seals it… and that is just that an opinion I think everyone besides yourself have been sleeping on the Cougars I just will say this Newnan is not ready to put on the Basketball Jersey’s and turn in the football equipment….I would say that Northside is not either it should be a war…

ENR, I have been reading your posts going back to last year. I agree with you on some things and sometimes just chuckle and close the blog. I have been in agreement with you that Northside is no doubt very talented. They have been a fine program for some time. I have seen them play one game in person and have watched one televised game (vs Lowndes) and they are as advertised. Although, Newnan played, in my opinion, a tougher team in Grayson last week. Now I do think you may be right that they won’t hang 20 on Northside. But you can mark it down also that you won’t hang 20 on Newnan. I believe this game will be alot like Newnans game last week and as well for Northside. If either team is showing up expecting anything less than a war they may as well hang up the cleats and whip out the sneakers. If you have seen any defensive film on Newnan this year you should know your team is going to be hit hard and often. Gang tackled to the point of not seeming fair. And if they can keep lining up and swapping licks with that 4 quarters then they have just as much chance of winning as Newnan. Now you can draw that little GNAT line any way or where you want it. But when the clock starts at Drake stadium Friday night there will be Cougars hitting unlike any defense you have faced this year. Good luck to the Northside Eagles and may the best team win. Oh, and to heck with a “blue out”! How about we line up and kick some a$&!!!

Sanity Rules,
I would just like to say that we did not win our region but we are still standing. That says a lot for the teams that are not playing that were undefeated until they played Colquitt County. It also speaks volumes for our region. How many teams are still left from your region? Can’t be Colquitt County per your comments and If you are from Northside, you should already know the drill. This is a vry tough region that we are from. 1AAAAA has been one of the toughest regions in the nation for years. I take nothing away from Camden. They are a well coached team that has played lights out. I really believe that this will be their toughest game to date. I am a former Packer and former Auburn Tiger and I can tell you that sometimes the darkhorse shines in glory to no regard what their record shows. Remember LSU won the national championship a couple of years back and they had lost 2 games as well….. Just remember these lyrics. Everybody knows that we are HOG WILD!!!!

The Mighty Griffin Bear Nation wishes you the best of luck and also congrats on a fine team, coaches, and season. That Fellow Bear in Texas reminds me of all the great games we used to have against Newnan back in the day. They were always classy win or lose. Is it not amazing how much talent is in our part of Georgia? just look at how many neighboring counties have teams still DEEP in the playoffs. GO GRIFFIN BEARS!!

I am so pumped about playing the Patriots! The Bears are gonna roll and then the losers bracket can come help us hoist the state championship banner at the Dome next week. This is the year baby. X. Dixon will eat their lunch tomorrow night. he may be the best player to ever come from this PRO Caliber town. We have over 30 former and current NFL players and this team could get us as many as 3-4 more. The tailback from Sandy Creek better bring two mouth pieces because one is gonna be dirty al the time from getting his bell rung.

Cougarfan: The cake walks are over. I am honestly going to be a true “homer” this week. My theory says that the home team has the overwhelming advantage. Unfortunately, our Eagles are going to be on the road. the odds are stacked heavily agsinst our beloved Eagles. We are going to have to dig deep against a very good Cougar team.
Good luck to the fine fans at Newnan. This time tomorrow we will know where our Eagles stand.

Inthatrenches: It is going to be a good one. Someone tell CougarDad that no one is going to put up 17 points against Northside in a semifinal football game. The game is going to be low scoring and I believe it is going to come down to special teams (a long field goal). Come on Devon Pike!

SanityRules: Read my post throughout this season. I have no doubts about how good Newnan is. Remember, Sanity Rules, last week I called the Newnan over Grayson, Northside over Peachtree Ridge, Colquitt County over Lassiter, and Camden County over North Gwinnett games.
As Chip Saye and Todd Holcomb were making a mockery out of the Georgia High School Football Daily by wasting our time and picking metro Atlanta schools, I was calling the overwhelming reality that in the largest classification that it was girls’ basketball season in metro Atlanta.
I have no doubts about how good Newnan is. Our Eagles are going to have our hands full. We are always the road team and that gives the advantage to Newnan. I saw our Eagles pull victory from the jaws of defeat last Friday night. Peachtree Ridge just outplayed us and we still won. These young Eagles know how to win. We will see tomorrow.
Go Eagles!

I think we can win the game Friday, but we will need to throw the ball to do it. Newnan’s defense is as solid as you will find in high school football, but so is Northside’s. The game will be low scoring and the first team to 14 points will win. My heart says we win it 10-3, but my head says Newnan beats us 10-3. My heart has been right before. A couple of turnovers would help, or a big play on special teams, which we are good at producing. I hope we pull it out. And yes, I feel sorry for AAAA next year.

I cant wait for the game tomorrow night. The 2 best AAAA teams playing in G-Town. I know Sandy Creek has a great team and one of the best running backs in the state. But the Griffin defensive has been brutal this year. I think the starters have scored as many points as they have given up. (also 8 blocked punts) 483 points scored in 13 games and 68 allowed, 1/2 by 2nd and 3rd string D in blowouts. So it will be a shootout and hopefully the Bears will come out on top. Better get there early or you wont find a seat.

Ok, we should have all learned by now to not be so sure of our respected teams. In the playoffs NOTHING is a sure thing. Anyone can win and anyone can lose. Ask, Stephenson, Lassiter, Grayson and Lowndes. All for of those teams were predicted to be still in the playoffs this week but none of them are.
Camden County should know beater than anyone what happens when a team goes into a game thinking they have already won before the game even starts. That is what Lowndes did and they lost.
There is no team in the AAAAA that has impressed me more than Colquitt County. They are the only team still in the playoffs from AAAAA who did not finish 1st in their region. They finished 3rd behind Northside and Lowndes.
Colquitt has beat two undefeated and highly favored teams in a row. One with 15 or so Division 1 Collage prospects, the other with a record breaking offense and QB.
They go into this game 11-2 the same record as Camden County. Camden is coming off a state title win in 2008, Colquitt is coming off a losing season.
Colquitt is hands down the most improved team in AAAAA no question about it. I have never seen a team make such a dramatic turnaround.
Another thing that stands out about Colquitt is how much they improve from week to week. They were good in regular season but they are even better in the Playoffs. They are big, strong and fast, they are conditioned and can play to the end with the same energy as they start with.
Not being from either Colquitt or Camden County, and looking in from the outside, I can say with out a doubt the team that impresses me the most between the two is hands down Colquitt County.
They may very well lose are they may very well win. Either way, Colquitt County is the most improved team in 2009 and that community should be proud be no matter if they win or lose Friday night.
Go Newnan!

Up_for_Grabs: I will tell you one thing that is a big difference for Colquitt County. The Packers have made it this far via playing metro Atlanta teams and they are different from the remaining teams in that they are not a defensive team. It’s a guarantee that any of our top programs South of the Gnat line would excel against Atlanta teams. I will be pulling for the Packers to play well. However, Camden County is one of the finest programs in the state. It is going to be a tall order for either of our Region 1-AAAAA teams to go on the road and beat either Camden County or Newnan. Home teams usually win big games.
No disrespect to Colquitt County. The Packers are back. However, be rest assured Lowndes County, who beat Colquitt County 31-6, would have issued a cakewalk through Lassiter, potentially putting up nearly 60 points against the Trojans. The Stephenson would have beaten themselves against Lowndes, just as they did against Colquitt County. Colquitt County has been tested against teams like Camden County and failed each time. Perhaps, Friday will be different. I doubt it.
Colquitt County scored 17 against Northside & Warner Robins, 14 against Valdosta, 10 against Westlake, and only 6 against Lowndes County. The Packers are not going to just hang 49 against Camden County. Colquitt County is going to have to hold Camden County under 21. That, my friend, is a real challenge in Wildcat Stadium in Kingsland, especially for an offense first team like Colquitt.
In AAAAA football, the name of the game is going to be field position, special teams play, and defense. Of the four remaining team, Colquitt has the weakest defense and play on the road. As I said, Colquitt County and Northside have their hands full.

ENR- offense first team like Colquitt? they shutout Warner Robins, Westlake, basically shutout Lassiter (only allowed a FG, Lassiter’s first TD came on a punt return, the other came against our 2nd team D with 2 minutes left in the game), and shutdown Northside in the 2nd half after allowing 14 points on their opening two drives. nothing could be farther from the truth when you say CC is an offense first team. defense is the reason why they have gotten this far.

It is not 6 hour ride to Fitzgerald. They should be well rested and focused. We have been on the road for big games before so no big deal. I don’t think Fitz can put a big number on the Wolves tonight as shown by our shutouts of Peperel and Cook in the earlier playoff rounds. I think the Buford offense wears down the smaller canes and pulls away at the end. I see a rematch of Buford and Lovett in the dome so I am also picking an upset of Calhoun.

I thought best record amongst competing teams was a reward for home field advantage. So much for logic all of the time. What genius decided that Clinch County deserves home field over Wilcox County, or for that matter that any team with a worse record deserves home field advantage? Huge advantage for the home team, undeservedly so in such case. Fairer result at least would be a neutral site.
That’s precisely why, although not a perfect setup(home field fans want their team at home), that playing the championship games in the Georgia Dome is not an all bad idea. Its a neutral site and both teams are rewarded with a trip to the dome.

Now as a PACKER BACKER
i have a lil somethin for all you haters. We do like being the underdog and against the defending champs what could we expect..But plse don’t get it twisted we are no North Gwinnet or any Atl school. This game will be a war for sure. The Packers are battle tested and we just take what you give us and we adjust so you will have a hard time preparing for so that is the edge that we have in this game.We know what Camden is going to do we just have to stop them but they dont know what we are going to do (run or pass) but good luck and GO PACK GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Colquitt County Underdog – Lassiter was overrated just like N. Gwinnett and I believe most of the bloggers had picked you guys to win that game anyways. So stop talking about being favored or not, that craps does not matter in the 3rd rounds plus in the playoffs. Just want to say one more thing though, CAMDEN Defense is no punk, they are fast and tackle well. The game will be decided by them, not us.

Sportsfan 31313, I am glad that someone outside of Colquitt county realizes the Packers are a quality team. We have been disrespected by most and the AJC all year. These guys have persevered and adjusted to whatever has been thrown at them. I do realize this is our toughest test yet, but i believe we will be ready and it will be an all out war. However; history does not bode well for a repeat champion in AAAAA, it is hard to beat top tier teams every year and claim the coveted state title.
We may not win this one, but if our offense can put together a few drives and keep their defense on the field, they will be winded by the fouth quarter, then the advantage swings to the Packers.

Thanks Lowndes fan I thought the same thing when we played the Vikings early in the season and I knew then we could make a run at it. I never thought the PACK would make it this far, but they have and I still think other teams haven’t gotten the memo “we can play”. We will hang around in this one and if it is close in the fourth we will pull it out because we have been there. They have only been in that situation once and won and it was against the Vikings who runs the wing T, like Warner Robins, and Stephenson. Camden knows how to stop that offense because they run it. Guess who else knows how to stop it. One team that does not run that offense is Hoover, and who does run an offense like hoover?

AJC definitely has a north GA (read Gwinnett) bias. But let’s face it. You tend to support those teams that are in geographical proximity to you because you are around them more and get to know the players and teams better.
Newnan v. Northside and Camden v. Colquitt are both evenly matched games. Home field advantage will give it to Newnan and Camden. Sandy Creek got robbed of home field advantage and will now face a tall order in Griffin on their turf. The Patriots will need something on special teams to pull out a win over the Bears.

Here is my take on Northside-WR vs Newnan. Northside is coming in knowing that alot of people already are picking Newnan to win in close defensive battle, people think Peachtree Ridge solved the mystery to stopping Northside’s run game. well what Peachtree Ridge Did was plainly play great defense against the run for 3.5 quarters and forgot there is more to football than just running the ball! Northside does not pass alot because it rarely has too but they showed PTR that there is more to NSWR than just running. everytime we Threw our wide receivers were wide open and when it counted we burnt them. our defense if you wanna really know the stats have only given up 21 points in the playoffs, every one else(chapel hill, union grove only scored on kickoff returns and field goals)so running on NSWR is out of the picture when they make you one dimentional that is where we put teams in trouble! our offense proved against PTR we can beat you thru the air. so about tonights game i believe Coach Nix has a couple wrinkles up his sleeve for the aggresive Newnan Defense! so if the Ogletree twins are excited you best believe the Eagles are excited about making a statement! We don’t Care about what happen in 2003, al1 we care about is tonight! Remember we play hard, hit you hard and most of all Win hard! Go Eagles and good luck to the Newnan! Much health to both Teams.

plowboy, what matter’s most? Playing tonight? or armchair quarterbacking? Did you really watch the Lowdnes/Colquitt game. I saw the Vikings running well and holding on D, when the game is in doubt, everyone runs. Did you really watch the Camden/Lowndes game? What was the final score? Also did yo see the two dropped TD passes? The Vikings are talented, and have a great program, which competes every year in AAAAA, Colquitt’s best year is this year. Camden is tough at home, and on the road. Camden beat Hoover last year in Hoover 44-16, Hoover owed Camden 1 this year. By the way Camden was up 27-12 at the Half of that game. Hoover was the better 2 nd half time. Camden respects everyone they strap it on against. They take care of business at hand, not looking ahead. Safe travels. Just saw some Colquitt fans in Walmart in Saint Mary’s looking for rain gear. Scoring will be at a premium, passing will be difficult. Forecast to rain harder as the night goes on. Camden does not play on natural grass, that would be messy.

CopnBlue, I guess you don’t remember that Camden won the Championship on that “even field” (DOME) last year. Do some research before you go running your mouth. Your team must not be in the Championship. Don’t cry….everything will turn out fine. Much love to the boys from Colquitt. They had a heck of season. To all the Camden people congrats on winning your way to the Dome, I said at the beginning of the season you guys are tough. The two losses where to 1 good team, and one out of this world team. I did the research on that Alabama team and all I can say is WOW. I wish you guys good luck and hope my Eagles are ready for the game. Norhtside has played their selves out of a tough season, anyone who doubts it is crazy. Norsthside gets no respect from any of these “Atlanta team fans”, so no matter what happens in the Dome, they have had a great season. I love the fact that the 2007 AAAA champs meet the 2008 AAAAA champs. Although out of the three times Northside and Camden have met, Northside has won 2 Camden has won 1. Without a doubt, this is the biggest game of the season, with or without a championship at stake.

Way to go Wilcox on your second ever title game! There has to be both good players as well as sound coaching involved in your journey to the dome. It has not been an easy trip for you having played many very good teams on the road, including a very worthy and undefeated Greenville team, an excellent undefeated Wesleyan team, and lastly a tough Clinch team. Good luck against Savannah Christian in the dome.
The recent experience against ECI in your only other championship game will not hurt but this one will be on a neutral field.

to the fitzgerald faithful: last night’s game was one for the ages. what a great high school football game played by two exceptional football teams. the ‘canes football team plays SO HARD and is VERY GOOD. coach pruitt and his staff are VERY GOOD. the fitzgerald faithful were VERY LOUD and created a VERY COOL environment for football. your young men showed so much character and class on the field after the game. while i am a very proud parent of a buford football player, am more than excited about the outcome of the game, and believe the same about our team, coaches and fans, i simply wanted to extend my congratulations to you. you guys have every reason to be proud of fitzgerald football. very well done.

According to BlackGold, Fitzgerald was driving before they fumbled the ball at their own 30. Pruitt runs for two yards on first down and the next play a fumble. Obviously, Buford didn’t “know” Fitz was going to score. They lined up to play defense and made a play at a critical point in the game. The game wasn’t over because of the fumble. The Fitz defense had a chance to get the ball back with plenty of time, but they couldn’t stop the Buford offense. Buford made the plays they had to in the last five minutes. They were not given anything and it sure wasn’t luck. Check the tape.

In review of the comments posted for the last two weeks I find it odd that Northside has not been reconized for their past acomplishments. This program has been dominant the last 12yrs. They very seldom lose to anyone during the regular season and if they do, it is to their little brother Warner Robins and in the playoffs. It is the tradition that has been created that makes this program so special. This years team was not slated to be the region champs nor this deep in the playoffs. It was suppose to be a rebuilding year. I spoke with Kal Daniels a former eagle who went on to play baseball with the Dodgers and he stated that the Eagles were good this year and the only team that he felt that they would have a problem with was Lowdnes. Unbeknowst to him that Colquitt had a great team as he sat among their fans enjoying 1AAAAA fellowship at the MAC.
The thing that grabs my attention the most is the fact that AJC nor PBS give Northside any recognition when it comes to fielding atheletes. It seems that every time we reach it to this level it is something strange to them of who is this Northside team and where did they come from. WE THE FORMER GRADUATES OF NHS DO NOT SEE OURSELVES AS FANS WE ARE AND ALWAYS BE EAGLES TIL WE DIE.
By the way reporters and commentators check the records and see how many times we have been there and who beat us at that time. GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stevey D chokes again. He always tries to outcoach his opponents. His decision to onside at the beginning was idiotic. The Griffin players did not seem like they knew that was the call. Sandy Creek knew that Griffin likes gimmicks and they put some players with better hands in front on the kickoff. It certainly paid off. For all the talent that has come through Griffin High and to have only one state championship is inexcusable. It is time they find someone who can get them over the hump. DeVoursney WILL NEVER take a team to a state championship because he tries to outcoach everyone. You just have to play the game and play to your strengths. No gimmicks.

Anyone who calls himself a football fan and doesn’t spend next weekend at the Dome is recently deceased. There are going to be five fabulous games. Fitzgerald must have a tremendous team since they put up so many points on Buford and took it to the wire, but, as I said, Buford’s coach is a great one and always has a great game plan. He is awesome at adjusting during games and always has a great passing game, but doesn’t pull it out til it’s needed – as against the Canes who thought Buford would just have a boring running game. 2-3 years ago in the state championship, they used that boring straight-up-the-middle running game, with only 2-3 sweeps and 2-3 passes, to beat us Lions 50 – 0. I would have loved to see the Buford-Fitz game last night even though I thought the Wolves would win. Instead I watched the other Fabulous AA game as Calhoun eliminated my Lions. Calhoun has another GREAT coach and I could tell that even before the game started just watching the offense warm up. Their linebackers and safeties make great reads and come up quickly to stop runs. They have several very good receivers and a QB who gets rid of the ball quicker than any I’ve seen – sacking him will be almost impossible even for Buford. They use the pass to set up the run and #5 got most of his numerous yards late in the game as a result. They also have the best high school kicker I’ve ever seen – with no wind in the Dome Buford will get NO opportunities to return kickoffs. If I were his coach, I would not hesitate to have him attempt a 55 yarder late in the game, or anytime I was confident in the defense enough to give the Wolves a short field, just in case he missed. AND DA’RICK ROGERS IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE WITH THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR CARRYING HIS TEAM TO VICTORY THAT I HAVE SEEN IN 50 YEARS OF WATCHING HS FOOTBALL. In the last two games alone, he has 16 catches for almost 450 yards and seven touchdowns. Doubleteaming him still doesn’t stop him, and it leaves four other good receivers available with a QB who can find the open one. Buford’s twin deep safeties defense is probably the best. If Buford blitzes and doesn’t get there in time, it’s a long gainer. It almost seems wise to rush two, double team #21 and #3 have two deep safeties and the other three playing zone, The QB can’t be read because he rarely looks at his intended receiver until just before he releases the pass. Only because Buford is their next opponent do I not predict, with no reservation at all, that the Jackets will win their first state championship since the 1950’s. During that period of time, Buford probably has more than any team other than Valdosta. Buford has size, tradition and confidence on their side with a great coaching staff and very well-coached/disciplined players but, in spite of several true D-1 prospects, no superstars(and apparently none needed). Calhoun has the edge in explosive scoring capability. If it gets down to clock control late in the game, I would go with Buford. If it gets down to a team needing 1-2 big plays late in the game, I would go with Calhoun. Calhoun will have to score often to offset Buford’s size wearing down the Jackets’ defense. If it comes down to kicking one or more field goals, it’s a toss up with both teams having great kickers with season long success – Calhoun’s seems to have more range. From Calhoun’s viewpoint, it would be demoralizing to have Buford eat up the clok with long scoring drives. From Buford’s viewpoint, it would be equally demoralizing to do that, just to have Calhoun get the ball and score in 3-4 plays. I’m so sorry that Lovett’s season has ended two victories short, and am so PROUD of this Lions team, but MAN, I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO SEE THE MOST EXCITNG(for unbiased fans) GAME TO BE PLAYED IN THE DOME THIS COMING WEEKEND!!! AA all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No excuses, Sandy Creek out coached and outplayed Griffin friday night. SC has alot of really good players and they capatalized on Griffin mistakes and won the game. The Griffin defense can be proud ( no TD’s against them and only 2 fg’s ) and the offense had some good plays, but for some reason the coach decided to throw deep 20 times. Made no sense. Good luck in the Dome Sandy Creek, you guys will give Clark Central all they can handle. Also, glad to see all the SC fans that showed up ro support their kids.

Thanks for the kind remarks. The folks in G-town take a lot of pride in their football team. We have won, and we have lost but we understand that these are “high school” kids. We made mistakes last night that ultimately cost us the game but our defense only gave up 6 points! Our coaches, players, and fans can all hold their heads high. Truth be known, I’d like to see Griffin and Sandy Creek play about 3 more times. There were so many good players on the field on both sides, it was like watching a good college game. Both Defenses were tough and there were alot of exciting plays for both teams. Good luck next Friday / Saturday to all the teams playing in the Dome. I might have to go Saturday and watch a few games.

Just wanted to chime in here and say Great season to the Colquitt County Packers. Those guys have nothing to hang there heads about. With only 3 losses on the year and 2 of those losses playing for the State Chapionship next week at the dome. The 3rd loss came from a very good Lowndes team that capitalized on the mistakes we gave them early in the season. If anything we serverd notice this year that we are contenders again. With our returning players and great coaching we will be HOG WILD and ready to make another run at it next year.
To Camden and Northside, play your best next week and may the best team win, I’ll be the neatral fan at the Dome rooting fo a good game
Good Luck

I want to thank those of you who have said complimentary things about our Packers. It has been a great season for us. I am really proud of them. We never expected to get this far this soon but it has been fun. I can’t wait till next year.

Colquitt County’s Quin Roberson #4 has not comitted to anyone as of yet. Rumor has it that he’s being looked at by Kentucky, Clemson, and Valdosta State University.

I said a couple of weeks ago, that Northside Warner Robins, and Camden County could be headed for an head on collision. Now there we have it. Northside Warner Robins and Camden County meeting again for their quest for another State Title. Last year Camden County beat Northside Warner Robins in the 2nd round of the post season playoffs, and Camden County went o to win the Region 3 – AAAAA State Title.
This the two will face each other again for the 2nd straight year in the post season playoffs with the only difference is that this is not the 2nd round of the playoffs but for the Class AAAAA State Title. If Camden County wins, they will again, they will become the Region 3- AAAAA State Champions for the 2nd year in a row bringing the Title again back to South Georgia.
But if Northside Warner Robins beat Camden County, they will add to the record book as the 2nd team to win State Titles in two different Classifications in this decade. Northside Warner Robins be added to the list along with Lowndes High School out of Valdosta, Georgia as the only two to win State Title in The State Highest Classifications. Both teams won it Class AAAA and Class AAAAA.
Camden County will be added to the list to win it three times in one decade. This will definitely be a serious showdown of defense as the two teams have a monster of a defense.
WHO WILL THE CLASS AAAAA STATE TITLE? LETS HEAR IT HERE ON THE BLOG…….
CAMDEN COUNTY OR NORTHSIDE WARNER ROBINS? YOU MAKE THE CALL.

Wilcox County will take a win over Clinch County.
That are better prepared for championship this year. In 2007 they felled short in the championship, but this year they will take it.

“Fire Devoursney” you a truly an Idiot. Steve DeVoursney has an awesome record at Griffin. True Friday’s night game was disappointing, however, How many teams were already sitting home at that point. Ask Panther Pride he can tell you. All of you fair weather fans, should just go pull for Spalding, then you’ll realize that Devo is alot better than you think. If you want to see a sure win state championship team. Why don’t you find Devo about five guys 250lbs plus to play offensive line so all our talent has someone to block for them. Talent is worthless without leadership, and trust me if Griffin had not had leadership that would not have made it to the final 4. So quit bashing Devo and move on!!

Griffin High choked……again. If it makes you feel better to be 3rd loser as opposed to being 10th loser so be it. You must be one of those satisfied Atlanta Braves fan’s who liked making it to the playoffs for 15 consecutive years and only winning it 1 time.

For those folks who have overlook Clarke Central. You are in for a big surprise. I played football from 1984-1988 at CC under legendary coach Billy Henderson. We were taught how to win and not listen to critics. The players love the so called “haters” of high school football. Go Glads bring the State Championship back where it belongs. Athens, Ga.
