GHSA sets 2010-11 region alignments, considers returning to two-year reclassification schedule

Chat with the AJC's Michael Carvell

Chat with Michael Carvell

The Georgia High School Association announced its new regions Wednesday, but the bigger news was a proposal to adjust the process again. The GHSA had announced new classifications in November.

Under the new plan, the state’s 445 member schools will remain in the same classification and region for the next four years, beginning in September.

The four-year cycle for this reclassification was approved last year. However, the reclassification committee has requested a return to the former long-time method of a two-year cycle. “Change is happening too quickly in education these days, and it is probably not in our best interests to go to a four-year cycle,” said Dr. Ralph Swearngin, the GHSA’s executive director.

“When we came up with the four-year idea a few years ago, we never could foresee all these changes in terms of growth, adding new schools, and people re-districting.”

That proposal, along with the final region assignments, will be voted upon by the GHSA’s executive committee Jan. 12. The reclassification committee will meet again Dec. 16 to hear any appeals about new region placements.

‘Catch-all’ Region 2-AAAAA should be strong

Here are the observations of the GHSF Daily’s Chip Saye and Todd Holcomb on the Dec. 2, 2009, regional realignment announcements for the 2010-11 academic year. They, and we at the AJC, also welcome your opinions.

Chip Saye’s observations:

*The increasing number of large schools in the metro Atlanta area continues to be a problem in Class AAAAA. The new Region 1-AAAAA in south Georgia will have only five schools, while every other region will have at least seven. In the alignment in place for this school year, every region in AAAAA has from eight to 10 schools.

*Region 2 appears to be the catch-all region in Class AAAAA. It includes two schools from DeKalb County (M.L. King, Stephenson), two Coweta County teams (Newnan, East Coweta), two from south Fulton (Langston Hughes, Westlake), one from Henry County (Luella) and one from Newton County (Newton). No other region besides Region 1 includes teams from more than two counties.

*It’s probably safe to pencil Buford in as a playoff team from Region 6-AA Div. A next season. The other five teams in its subregion (Avondale, Clarkston, Cross Keys, Decatur and GAC) had a combined record this season of 14-37. Six of the victories belonged to Avondale, and another was a forfeit to Cross Keys.

*Although about half of its schools do not play football, Region 7-A stands out as unusually large with its 25 members. The region is made up of private schools from north Fulton County to Macon. It should make for one heck of a basketball region tournament, though.

*Region 5-A will be loaded for football. Five of the eight schools that played a region schedule this season – Lincoln County, Warren County, Washington-Wilkes, Twiggs County and Wilkinson County – made the playoffs. There’s also Johnson County, which went 8-1 before losing in the Region 3-A playoff.

Todd Holcomb’s observations:

*Coffee and Tift County were 3-7 this season. One of them would’ve made the playoffs in the new Region 1-AAAAA, which has only five teams. But each of the five schools has made the quarterfinals this decade, and four have made the semifinals.

*Newnan, Stephenson and M.L. King have won weak regions this decade. That won’t be the case in the new and improved Region 2-AAAAA. This should be one of the top three or four football regions in Class AAAAA.

*None of the Regions 4-AAAAA teams won a playoff game this year, and only one qualified. In 6-AAAAA, Roswell is the only team that won a round in the playoffs or has any real name recognition around the state.

*The Houston County schools (Warner Robins, Houston County, Northside) were hoping to land in a region with Upson-Lee and Jones County. Instead, they’ll be traveling to Bainbridge and Thomas County Central on the Florida border. Warner Robins has never played Thomas County Central. Northside and Thomas Central have played once. This should be fun.

*Region 4-AA has three reigning region champions
(Eastside, Jackson, Sandy Creek) that are a combined 8-1 in the playoffs. Eastside and Sandy Creek are in the semifinals, and Jackson lost to Eastside in the quarters.

Here are the new regional alignments set Wednesday by the Georgia High School Association.

hello sports fans(debate teams)–THE GHSA HAS PUT TOGETHER THE REGIONS FOR NEXT YEAR. VERY GOOD JOB ON TAKING TRAVEL AS THE MAIN POINT FOR MOST SCCHOOLS. HOPEFULLY YOU(GHSA) WILL NOT GO BACK TO THE 2 YEAR SET. FOUR YEARS GIVE THE SCHOOLS THE TIME MAKE TO THE NEEDED CHANGES FOR THE LONG RUN. THIS 4 YEAR WILL GIVE THE STUDENTS THE CHANCE TO COMPETE FOR THE TERM OF THIER HIGH SCHOOL DAYS. WITH 4 YEARS THE GHSA MAY GET MORE NATIONAL RANK TEAMS.

THE REGION THAT’S NUMBER ONE(AA) WILL STILL BE THE SAME. THE ONLY CHANGE WOULD BE A MORE INTENSE GAME WHEN BASKETBALL SEASON ARRIVE FOR THE ONES IN CLASS A. IS THE REGION BASKETBALL POWERS TOGETHER AGAIN.

STICK WITH THE FOUR YEAR. THE STUDENTS WILL ENJOY THE GAMES AND STUFF THAT TIME WILL GIVE.

These AAAA schools should swap regions:

5AAAA to 7AAAA:
Kell
Osborne
Pope
Sprayberry

7AAAA to 5AAAA:
Cass
NW Whitfield
Rome
Woodland, Cartersville

This puts the Cobb schools with the Cherokee, N. Fulton, Forsyth schools, and places NW Georgia schools with other west Georgia schools (N. Paulding & Woodland are only 10 minutes apart).

Plowboy: You need to inform the GHSA of your 102 state championship because that is what they have listed on their website from the year 1970 until now. Who did Lowndes beat for that national championship? The last sport that Lowndes won a state championship in beside football is 2000 baseball. Good response though, we don’t play anybody. I guess the other 80 something teams in our classification don’t count. By the way, that national championship girl’s basketball program has definitely fallen. When was the last time they advanced past the first or second round.
Hey, good talking to you buddy. Hopefully you all can add to that trophy case because the dusk is definitely collecting.

Plowboy: Yes, I was talking about thee entire Region 1-AAAAA. No sure where you got the 102 from for the entire region from the year 1970 (which you chose). I listed the state championship from the GHSA website and it came to those I listed. From 1970 to now, in the now PREPPY sports, there is one boys basketball, two girls basketball and four SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW-Pitch softball titles and seven baseball titles. I think the word JOKE was too strong, but be honest in the scheme the entire AAAAA sports world, Region 1-AAAAA is not a major player in any sport, but football. Sorry if that offends you, but its just reality.

George mentioned Colquitt’s success in tennis last year, but the brackets are drawn where there is not north-south crossover until the semifinals, which automatically puts a team from Regions 1,2,3 or 4 in the final four. At that point, the teams from those regions usually don’t win a game or match.

Again, if this truth hurts, I apologize, but its reality.

Other Sports not a bit offended by the fact that 1AAAAA doesn’t domintate others sports like they do in football. That is true.
And usually those from schools who have very little to show for football have to find something else to hang their hat on. So we understand your inferiority complex, because in Ga. Football is the #1 thing. And 1AAAAA does the #1 thing better than any other in the state of Georgia and many (outside of 1AAAAA) have said the nation.
Some people are smart enough to know that when you do something good, keep doing it.

grayram…last year we played 3 non region games prior to the rest of the season being region games. It would be my guess that the first 3 are already planned, but that (as the article said) game 4-6 will be difficult to find. So most likely not booked. Other teams will likely be into their region schedules by the 4th game of the season both in state and out of state. Should be interesting to see how all 5 of these teams come up with an additional 15 games between them. To accomodate Region 1AAAAA should someone want to play us, other teams may have to play some region games earlier in the year and schedule their non region games in weeks 4-6. Then on he other hand if the teams we may have already booked for weeks 1-3 now have larger regions to play in then that could interupt those weeks scheduling also.

JamesR1991: I would assume that is for travel reasons. The traffic in Atlanta makes uniting the north and south Fulton teams a greater challenge than it may appear on paper. Imagine Tri-Cities traveling to Alpharetta with a boys’ basketball game starting at 7. That is a logicistical nightmare.

can someone tell me how things work in the regions with 2 subregions? People at Kell (now in region 5 AAAA) likly aren’t going to be very happy with the new classification, except for Coach Cook, who seemed to be the only one pushing for us not to remain in AAAAA. Oh well, seems like it could atleast be an interesting region. 5 AAAA div B has a 42-28 record last year, and is taking in 3 former AAAAA teams who can all beat Sprayberry, last years second place team for region 7 div B (which is the most similiar region). 5AAAA Div A looks pretty weak though, 28-42 last year.
Sure wish Kell was staying AAAAA. 5 AAAAA looks like it could be an interesting division (where Kell would have been).

georgia’s region 3 in its largest classification has essentially been the same for the last 25 plus years, the savannah schools playing up and any other schools along the I-95 coast including camden county. there was never any complaints about its makeup, for most of it, in truth other regions looked forward to realignments in hopes of being paired with the region in the first round (4 easy 1st rd wins ; }. even in 1999 when brunswick (14-1) made a run to the finals (lost to lowndes 17-0) there were no complaints, 2002 camden county (13-1) to the semi’s (lost to brookwood 24-23) there were still no complaints, why because any team even a poor region 3 team could get lucky right!! even in 2003 camden county (15-0) wins it all yet there were no complaints, no calls or outcries to place all the strongest southern programs in one single region. 2004 camden county (13-1) back in the semi’s (lost to eventual state champs lowndes 30-0) still no complaints because the football order had been restored, the fluky run of the poor little region 3 teams must be over right? wrong!!

only the real football people around the state realize that the state football landscape had changed for the foreseeable future(since 2002 6 semi’s, 2 state titles and counting…). finally someone (jeff herron just off a state championship at oconcee in 1999) had come into the region and changed the mindset of a school and a community that talent and fan support at games alone was not enough, you needed the facilities available at the other georgia power programs. now let’s fast forward to ‘07, ‘08 and ‘09 and everyone including you whiners (todd holcomb that includes you) rant and rave about how that poor region 3 team is not playing fair because it was not losing in the 1st or 2nd rounds per the script any longer ; (

and as for this new realignment now that region 1 (the sec of georgia high school football) will have only 5 teams (two legit programs, one playing up and living off past glories, valdosta, two programs that have seen better days tift & coffe, while losing two of the better programs in the state NHS & WR along with houston are moving down), that means lowndes and a rejuvenated colquitt now have a even shorter noncompetitive region schedule than camden county so let the real whining begin!!

I don’t like it that Union Grove got put in the weakest region in AAAA..Despite the fact that they will win the region every year, it’s an embarrassment to, what has been a good AAAAA program, to drop down and play garbage teams from south metro Atlanta..Region 6 would be a much better placement..I would say Region 1 but the travel would be impossible for our broke little program..bottom line, Union Grove needs to be in AAAA for now but not in that region

Secondly, Northside Warner Robins needs to be reconsidered for AAAAA..That program needs more quality competition than that.

Lastly, and ill get off my spill here, Newton and Luella, say your prayers.

I’ll throw this out there for all you friday night fans. How do you think Camden would hold up in Region 1 AAAAA?

You can make all the travel excuses you want but leaving Camden in 3AAAAA is just plain wrong……besides they pay those Savannah schools to give up their homes games so they really only have a couple of away games each. But then the excuse becomes it’s not just about football but the other sports. What makes Camden so much more special than Bainbridge and TCC who’ll have to travel over 2 hours to play the Warner Robins/Macon schools much farther than Camden. It would have made more sense for the Savannah school’s to play 4-AAAA and get in the region with Brunswick and the other schools which are closer. Their must be a lot of money changing hands between Camden, the GHSA and the Savannah Administrators for selling out the Savannah kids to the benefit of Camden county
