The Georgia High School Association announced its new regions Wednesday, but the bigger news was a proposal to adjust the process again. The GHSA had announced new classifications in November.
Under the new plan, the state’s 445 member schools will remain in the same classification and region for the next four years, beginning in September.
The four-year cycle for this reclassification was approved last year. However, the reclassification committee has requested a return to the former long-time method of a two-year cycle. “Change is happening too quickly in education these days, and it is probably not in our best interests to go to a four-year cycle,” said Dr. Ralph Swearngin, the GHSA’s executive director.
“When we came up with the four-year idea a few years ago, we never could foresee all these changes in terms of growth, adding new schools, and people re-districting.”
That proposal, along with the final region assignments, will be voted upon by the GHSA’s executive committee Jan. 12. The reclassification committee will meet again Dec. 16 to hear any appeals about new region placements.
‘Catch-all’ Region 2-AAAAA should be strong
Here are the observations of the GHSF Daily’s Chip Saye and Todd Holcomb on the Dec. 2, 2009, regional realignment announcements for the 2010-11 academic year. They, and we at the AJC, also welcome your opinions.
Chip Saye’s observations:
*The increasing number of large schools in the metro Atlanta area continues to be a problem in Class AAAAA. The new Region 1-AAAAA in south Georgia will have only five schools, while every other region will have at least seven. In the alignment in place for this school year, every region in AAAAA has from eight to 10 schools.
*Region 2 appears to be the catch-all region in Class AAAAA. It includes two schools from DeKalb County (M.L. King, Stephenson), two Coweta County teams (Newnan, East Coweta), two from south Fulton (Langston Hughes, Westlake), one from Henry County (Luella) and one from Newton County (Newton). No other region besides Region 1 includes teams from more than two counties.
*It’s probably safe to pencil Buford in as a playoff team from Region 6-AA Div. A next season. The other five teams in its subregion (Avondale, Clarkston, Cross Keys, Decatur and GAC) had a combined record this season of 14-37. Six of the victories belonged to Avondale, and another was a forfeit to Cross Keys.
*Although about half of its schools do not play football, Region 7-A stands out as unusually large with its 25 members. The region is made up of private schools from north Fulton County to Macon. It should make for one heck of a basketball region tournament, though.
*Region 5-A will be loaded for football. Five of the eight schools that played a region schedule this season – Lincoln County, Warren County, Washington-Wilkes, Twiggs County and Wilkinson County – made the playoffs. There’s also Johnson County, which went 8-1 before losing in the Region 3-A playoff.
Todd Holcomb’s observations:
*Coffee and Tift County were 3-7 this season. One of them would’ve made the playoffs in the new Region 1-AAAAA, which has only five teams. But each of the five schools has made the quarterfinals this decade, and four have made the semifinals.
*Newnan, Stephenson and M.L. King have won weak regions this decade. That won’t be the case in the new and improved Region 2-AAAAA. This should be one of the top three or four football regions in Class AAAAA.
*None of the Regions 4-AAAAA teams won a playoff game this year, and only one qualified. In 6-AAAAA, Roswell is the only team that won a round in the playoffs or has any real name recognition around the state.
*The Houston County schools (Warner Robins, Houston County, Northside) were hoping to land in a region with Upson-Lee and Jones County. Instead, they’ll be traveling to Bainbridge and Thomas County Central on the Florida border. Warner Robins has never played Thomas County Central. Northside and Thomas Central have played once. This should be fun.
*Region 4-AA has three reigning region champions (Eastside, Jackson, Sandy Creek) that are a combined 8-1 in the playoffs. Eastside and Sandy Creek are in the semifinals, and Jackson lost to Eastside in the quarters.
Here are the new regional alignments set Wednesday by the Georgia High School Association.

The Warner Robins schools are gonna have to petition to stay in Region 1- AAAAA now…..A bigger headache now with trips to South Ga locations Bainbridge ,Thomasville and Now the West Ga Columbus schools , COST EFFICIENT?…..trips to Lowndes ,Coffee ,Tift and Colquitt are more reasonable to me….What do you Northside and Region 1 AAAAA folks in here think about this ?…….And we’ll get only one Non-region game to play in thid new region ……this will suck!

Sandy Creek goes back to AAA. Would like to see them play the local county teams and Northgate. I was told the main reason for the decision was for the non-football sports; apparently they aren’t as competitive as football team.
What a crock. Four years ago, we chose to play AAA and the result was long away games to Northwest (Cartersville, Cedartown, Carrollton). Sure was great to have away games close by.
Don’t understand logic in this decision by Roy Rabold and Chip Walker.
NOTE TO REEZE ABOVE: Opt out period is over…I believe all that had to be done by end of November.

Okay, Our athletic powers at NSWR, WR, and HC need to inform the GHSA that after a second review they have decided to play up (remain) in 1AAAAA. These schools new AAAA region assignment is plain awful. We hated traveling as far as Lowndes and Valdosta to play but under the new region–we go to even further. i.e. (Florida) Bainbridge and Thomasville. WOW!.

Reeze: You have 2 non-region games with 9 teams in the region. I agree with you, I don’t see how playing in AAAA is more cost efficient for the Houston County schools. However, ENR told us that WRHS, NSWR & HoCo would not play up because of travel costs. Looking at this, Bainbridge & Thomasville are further than Valdosta. Also, more schools mean more travel, especially if they are more spread out.

I am tired of the 15 and 16 team regions. There are a lot of talented teams who mis the playoffs because of this crap. And then you still have regions with 5 and 6 teams. Something has to be done about it.

What else would you have them do with Camden ?? No matter where they go the have to travel over 100 miles. If you remove them from Region 3 it just makes the region fodder (football wise) for the rest of the state come playoff time with the excpetion of when Bradwell fields a good team. All in all this is what is best for all involved. Camden will still win the region and you will have a formidable #1 seed every year, and for those asking Sav Arts does not field a football team. My biggest issue is that a school should only be able to play up one class not 3 in the case of Benedictine. Safe travels to the Packer Fans on friday. Hopefully the wet weather will hold off for the game.

The Henry County Board of Education should be ashamed. Redraw the attendance zones. Luella has 2000+ students, yet Eagles Landing, Stockbridge, Henry County, Locust Grove have less than 1250 students. Make all the schools in Henry County the same size and eliminate the need for outrageous travel.

From the Valdosta Daily Times regarding 1AAAAA.
On the other hand, the smaller region will create another dilemma, particularly for the region’s football teams. With three fewer schools in the region, more non-region games will have to be scheduled. That means that each 1-AAAAA football team must now schedule six non-region games. “Well, it’s going to be tough for scheduling and finding games, but that’s what it is,” Lowndes High football coach Randy McPherson said. “Most of the time, non-region games are at the beginning of the schedule. It’s going to be hard, really hard. The reason is because not a lot of other teams are looking for those games. Weeks four, five and six will be real hard to find a game.” McPherson says he will look into scheduling AAAAA schools from metro Atlanta and along the Atlantic coast. “I’m going to try to contact anybody,” McPherson said. “I’m going to do my best to find six games. I think we’ve got a deal with Peachtree Ridge. Ware County is subdivided. They said they wanted to play, but now it depends on how their region fits.” McPherson also admits that he will miss the hard-fought games his team had against Northside, Warner Robins and Houston. “We’re going to miss the competition with the Warner Robins schools. Those were good games and good competition. I thought they brought a lot to our region. I would have liked to see them stay,” he said.
So bring it on Overrated…..nows your chance.
We are looking and taking all comers.

Those Douglas County schools are pathetic and Hiram and East Paulding are just average. Talk about a big, fat JOKE. Region 3-AAAAA you are officially off the hook, and thank Camden for that. Region 1-AAAAA: Is a JOKE!!!! The quality of competition in football has definitely gone down with the exit of Warner Robins and Northside. But the other sports have taken a hit. Wait a minute, the other sports in Region 1-AAAAA have loooooooong been a joke. Aside from a couple Lowndes baseball runs, no other sport competes on the state-wide level. Considering last school year (2008-09) Lowndes and Valdosta won all the region championships. However, they didn’t put any state championships in the trophy case, including in their beloved football. Region 1-AAAAA hopes and prays that they win in football so they win brag about something. There are more sports in a school than football.

Denny25… Ringgold is in 7A-AAA. they have completely given Region 7-AAA to NW GA…I am from the North Hall area. I graduated from NHHS and as long as I was there, and before, and after. They were in Region 7-AAA. That region has become like a home from all the school in it. It will take some getting used to. Only two teams that were with us will be staying, Gilmer & Pickens. East Hall moved to AA, West Forsyth to AAAAA & Creekview to AAAA. The rest of em got shipped off to Region 8-AAA. I can see that 8-AAA is a bigtime weak region for 2010. The only 3 teams that had 2009 winning records were Gainesville, North Hall & White County (all 7-AAA rejects). I do have to admit that North Hall & White County will have better shots at playoff appearances in 8A-AAA. I cant wait to see the North Hall vs Stephens County rivalry spark back up. Although the Indians lead the alltime series 1-16-1, North Hall beat them in the playoffs a few years back. It will be a good rivalry for the new few years.

Camden Fan,
Thanks… But the Region looks remedial. I just hope that Bradwell Institute schedule some tougher non Region games. That way it can prepare them for the post season playoffs. They should play against Coffee County, and Tift County to add some strength to their schedule because they already have Camden County on the schedule. This will help them in the long run. Would you agree?

Typically, what are the differences in region scheduling -vs- sub region scheduling? I am assuming that for football all subregion teams will be scheduled and the remainder of the schedule is made against teams in the other subregion on a rotating basis? Playoff teams determined by records -vs- subregion opponents???

yeah that 7AAAA is kinda odd. Why put teams in west GA into a region with teams over on the northeastside of Atlanta? North Fulton, Forsyth, and Cherokee schools closely resemble each other in size and athleticism and would be a fun region. I see they separated them into sub regions, but don’t they have to play teams from the other?

The new Region 3 AAAA may negatively effect the cheerleading competition at the state level. I understand cheerleading is not top priority when these alignments are being designated, but just to note. In the newly aligned Region 3AAAA – there are ten teams from this “newly aligned” region that qualified for the state sectionals this year and of those ten, seven made it to the final competition of the top 16 teams in the state. If the qualifications for sectionals/state competition remain the same for cheerleading this upcoming year, there would be 6 of those ten teams in this region not represented at the state level which would dilute the competition for Georgia High School cheerleading.

The new Region 3 AAAA may negatively effect the cheerleading competition at the state level. I understand cheerleading is not top priority when these alignments are being designated, but something to also note.

The experiences that I’ve had with GHSA, not necessarily with football, have me convinced that they are a bunch of unethical good ole boys. And who to they answer to………no one. I’m not one for having the government’s fingers in everything, but I’d welcome the government overseeing this group. Thanks, Tom Murphy for the deal you cut with the gob’s.
