Sandy Creek wins coin toss, then loses home playoff game to No. 1 Griffin

Chat with the AJC's Michael Carvell

Chat with Michael Carvell

Sandy Creek’s football team won the coin toss to play at home in the state semifinals, but now will have to play  on the road after GHSA rules clarification.

It was a huge turn of events for Sandy Creek. Who is the team’s opponent this week? Griffin, ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA and heavy favorites to win the state championship.

How did it happen?  Sandy Creek’s stadium does not meet the seating capacity of 6,000 for a state semifinals game. The GHSA waives the rule for the playoff’s first three rounds, while next week’s championship games are held at the Georgia Dome.

After Sandy Creek realized the mistake, the school turned itself in and will play at Griffin at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

In all seriousness I think Sandy Creek is pretty good team. If they weren’t they wouldnt have made this far. All the talk about where they are playing is overrated. The fans arent that loud anyway its because we havent had to be honestly. So to the Pats please bring your fans your best it should be a great game

Ok ok…all seriousness…This is a my sentiments for THE SANDY CREEK (including the cheerleaders and band members who work hard as well)..(I am really disappointed in the fans though) congrats to all concerned seriously. It is a great feat for you to have made it this far. I for one recognize the hard work and sacrifice it takes to do this. I am a former Bear player, and we used to have some great games against Fayette Co. and Mcintosh. I am glad the game is in Griffin, but really understand the frustration you must have about the game being moved. Mistakes happen. But again, you were honest and admitted your oversight. I’m looking forward to the game and have not missed one yet this year. Griffin has a noted history of winning and the accolades are well deserved. Sandy Creek may be there one day also. You are already off to a great start! Just look at this…in our classification alone (AAAA) three of the four remaining teams are nearly county neighbors…Spalding, Fayette, Rockdale. That is awesome if you think about it. And Athens (Clarke Central) is not that far away either, and had they not beaten North Clayton, well…it boggles the mind. All I am saying is,. we should be happy we have the talent in this area we live in. So Good luck folks, and remember that there is more to life than football. Learn to be good citizens and take care of your families and friends. GO BEARS!

What in the world?! All I see is hating, hating, sipping on the hatorade. Sandy Creek deserves a chance at the State Championships! We’ve worked hard for YEARS! And when Griffin recognizes our hard work, we’ll recognize theirs. It’s a two sided deal here. Who made ya’ll God. And seriously? This is FOOTBALL! Yeah it’s fun and it could make your career, but seriously, every single person in the United States can live without it. Pulease!!! And good luck to both Sandy Creek High School and Griffin.

Pathetic that a AAAA high school doesnt have a stadium that holds 6000, but even if it did it would never be more than half full. If Sandy Creek wins the toss they should get to decide if they want to bring in temporary bleachers or move the game to another neighboring stadium for the game. GA HS playoff rules are stupid.

Thomas Paine you are a LIAR AND A FRAUD:

Agency approves accreditation for school system

The Griffin-Spalding County School System has earned an “accredited with quality” status from the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC), according to a news release. The school system was recommended for this status after a consultant visited and inspected all schools in the system for a week in October.

“Accreditation is truly an accomplishment and an indication of the hard work, diligence and attention the district provides in assuring quality education,” said Cynthia Anderson, middle school curriculum director for the school system, in an e-mail. Being accredited by the GAC, an independent agency governed by a board of educators, means that schools provide comprehensive and quality teaching and learning experiences while preparing students for the next academic level.

Schools in the Griffin-Spalding County School System were evaluated in the areas of organization, personnel, program of studies, school plant, finances and summer school.

During his evaluation, the consultant looked closely at how school personnel meet standards by observing their actions and reviewing documentation. On a district level, the consultant evaluated the district’s board of education policies, emergency plan, contractual handbook and financial audit.

Stop the trash talking about either school or town. Everyone is proud of their hometown. I am very proud to be calling a GRIFFINITE! I have lived here all my life and graduated in 1984 from GHS. Griffin has produced close to 40 Pro Athletes. That is a tribute to the athletic program. Willie Gault, Jessie Tuggle, Nick Clemons, Freddie Gilbert, Randy Baldwin, Alton Montgomery are just a few notables who have played in the NFL. It’s a football game. Let the boys play ball and leave it at that.

If they listen on the radio, let them listen to the Bears’ broadcast, especially the tailgate show. They tell me what to look out for with our Bears and the other team while I’m at the stadium and they’re almost always right. And when they’re not right, they’re at least funny as heck.

Come Friday though make sure you have a front row seat on how a real Football team performs on the field, When The Griffin high School Bears take care of your Sandy Creek Cream Puffs. Better yet watch it on TV where you can see all the instant replays of the Mighty Bears waxing yall sorry excuse for a team. Just a head up to the Sandy Creek fans. I read you have a cool “train bell’ that you ring. Just to let you know that if it is anything like an airhorn it will not be allowed at Memorial Stadium. Since GHSA adopted the rule this year of no air horns and whisles they are not allowed at the stadium, and you will be ask to leave. All other noise makers like jugs cow bells ect. are allowed and incouraged. I like the airhorns, but put my away. So just want to let you know before there was a problem Friday night. Have a safe trip to Griffin, and I hope that all the players remain healthy during the game.

So let me get this straight. The Sandy Creek fans are afraid of the major crime wave they perceive of in Griffin. So does this mean you guys would be too afraid to drive to the Dome? I mean, Vine City is SO much safer than Griffin. I bet that most of the Sandy Creek fans have better sense than some of the ones on this blog. I think they will be perfectly safe in Griffin and will have a good time at the game.

I hear that Sandy Creek has a damn good team and I’ve seen 11 of Griffin’s games this year and they have alot of talent on defense, offense and special teams. Griffin has scored a touchdown in the first 20 seconds of the game or 3 times this year. The first string defense has given up 37 points in 13 games. ( 24 points by 2nd/3rd string D and 7 by offensive interception)

So talking trash means nothing. We’ll see whose the best about 10PM Friday night.

Both teams have had great years. That being said…..upsets do happen. Look at South West Dekalb, they were supposed to make it to the championship. Congrats to Sandy Creek for beating Tucker, last years defending champion. They also went down to South Georgia and beat a solid Thomas County Central team. This has been, by far, the best year of Sandy Creek football in their history. Honestly, this game is like the Championship game, #1 and #2 meeting. It’s going to be a great football game. Remember, its only football….

What? Am I reading this right? It sounds like we have a lot of poor sportsmanship. I am not from Griffin or Fayetteville. But from what I hear, the Griffin High School Bears are going to DOMINATE Sandy Creek. I hope Sandy Creek are not pumping them guys up so hard until they think they gone win. I heard that they had Appalachee players crying LITERALLY last week. You don’t want to mess with those boys. They are the Truth!! And yeah, I heard that they had some kids on the dance team, with the band and the cheerleaders. So what? That just goes to show you the talent that comes from Griffin. So Sandy Creek just calm down and take that butt whooping like a TEAM!! LOL!!!
