Inthatrenches , what benefits us is the way we lost last year. We felt like we were the best in the state but we didn’t play like it when it counted. There is a deep desire for this team to redeem itself for last year’s shortcomings. Last night the whole state saw what we knew all along. Newnan’s defense is fast ,big ,and hard hitting. No weakness.

Can everyone realize that if you dont win state at some point you will FACE DEFEAT so 50% of you bloggers will eat crow and to Griffin watch out for Clarke Central they have a strong defense but they wouldn’t have defeated us if Ken Malcolm didnt get hurt but thats besides the point. I think if Rajon nEAL runs and plays hard Griffin will be in T-R-O-U-B-L-E . Griffin won’t win state easily..

Congratulations to the Eagles! We must play a better game against Newnan. It really suprised me that PTR held us like they did. They have a very good team. I don’t understand Lowndes beating them the way they did. That just shows you that anything can happen. Congratulation to the Cougars. I hope it’s a good clean game. I know they have a very good defense. I’m not sure about their offense, I think it is a little weak like ours. I think it will be a close game. Go Eagles!!

Pakcer’s you guy’s have played Camden before during the 04/05 palyoffs. Camden 9-0 winners, first round game. Some of your fans know how big Chris Gilman stadium is. More than enough space. Please pack the place out. Trust me Camden fans will be there. In fact they packed out the visitors side in North Gwinnett last friday. I am sure Camden is looking forward to your visit. I watched Colquitt on GHSTV, a very impressive bunch. Camden takes no one for granted. They seem to strap it on, lineup and play.

SWD Still Strong,
Hold your horses……Don’t exactly crown Clarke Central in the finals…..Rockdale has beaten those guys already this year. Trying to win again is NOT going to be an easy task, but it will be a great game because both teams have improved so much!!! Region 8-AAAA played good football this year, but they don’t get any respect because of previous years. This year is a different year and all the teams went out and EARN their respect by playing hard…..Regardless of who wins or not, Region 8-AAAA has alot to be proud of!!!

Cane Fan and BlackGold,
I can’t figure out if you two are young guys who just don’t know any better, or are old guys who just don’t know any better, but one thing is for sure. You are not current players or coaches on The Hurricanes team, because if you were, you wouldn’t be running your mouths against a team like Buford. Buford may find a few players each year who prefer to play for Buford than their normal school, and they may be younger than usual this year, but they are extremely well coached and plenty talented, plus big and strong. Believe me their coach is one smart coach who has many tools/tricks up his sleeve, but saves them for when they’re needed so they catch their opponent by total surprise. If they find they can’t run the ball down your throat, they will kill you on play-action passes. But I imagine they will rush for more points and yards than you ever dreamed possible. Just curious, how does Buford’s margin of victory over Cook compare with your margin over Cook? If you even score on Buford, you’ll be doing great. Their coach is also smart enough – just as I imagine your coach is – to brag on their opponents, both those they have already beaten and the next one on the schedule. I have no doubt that Fitzgerald has a superb team and deserves the ranking they have and much more recognition and appreciation than they get prior to the playoffs. But, if you think that The Canes or anyone will embarrass Buford this year or any year, that is a thought that is wiser to keep to yourselves, or just among close friends of the Canes family, until you have actually done the deed. I expect it will be a great game and wish both teams good luck and no injuries! Be sure to save all your postings so after the game you can show everyone and say “SEE I TOLD YOU!” or pretend you didn’t actually write them and say “That Cane Fan and BlackGold surely are enthusiastic, not too smart nor humble, but definitely enthusiastic.”

Fred I too am a believer that you can make numbers pretty much say any thing you need to prove, but in this case the numbers don’t lie.
Look at it another way. Northern region was made up of 16 Northern teams.
Southern Region was made up 8 Northern (from the Top 1/2 of the state) Teams and 8 Southern Teams.
I would say the Atlanta Area (Top 1/2) of the state had plenty of opportunity to prove themselves.
As I pointed out in another post in another week, of the 8 South teams
only 3 (Lowndes, Camden, and Colquit) were legitimate AAAAA schools and the rest were actually AAAA or under. According to the new school population numbers just put out.
2 of those 3 (Camden and Colquit) are still playing along with Northside who is soon to be back down into AAAA.
So of the 3 legite AAAAA schools from the south that made the semis 2 are left and the one that was beat was done so by one of the other legite AAAAA schools from the south.
Good news I see Newnan getting to the finals.
I feel like Northside has been cutting it too close lately
and it is time for them to get bit.
Bad news I predict Newnan will lose to Camden in the finals.
I think other posters (I was not one of them) said it best when they
said the state championship game was the Lowndes/Camden winner.
Camden seems to be on a roll.
Funny thing, at the beginning of the year I had Camden in the championship game against Lowndes at the Dome. I felt like they would lose to Grayson first game of the year, but improve drastically as the year went along.
Of course Lowndes blew that opportunity when they went down 10-7 at the hands of Northside and lost the 1AAAAA #1 seed.
But then, Newnan still has a chance to prove all of us doubters wrong.

sounds to me like you are still whining and looking for excuses because you got beat. We are not worried about Clarke Central. And Rockdale has already PROVED they are ROAD TOUGH! Griffin has their sights FOCUSED on those Sandy Creek Fighting Patriots. We understand how good they are, They made one of the toughest road trips in Ga. High School football, They marched in to a hostile Jackets nest at TCC, swatted them down AND took all their Honey! But guess what??? BEARS LOVE HONEY – and the Griffin Bears are HUNGRY!!

Black is Back,
Any particular reason that you so resent the loss to Lovett? Most teams that are eliminated, and their fans, want the team that beat them to go on and win the championship. But I notice you still want to complain about why, in your opinion, you lost the game, and to negatively refer to Lovett players as “richie riches”. But, hey, it’s a free world and you can support any team you choose. Trust me the Calhoun coaches already have a great idea of what they will do in their plan to stop Lovett’s offense and score on the Lions’ defense. Things don’t always go as planned, but we all have a plan. And I hope your plans for the holidays and for 2010 go better than you dream! By the way, even though Lovett won the toss, we still travel to Calhoun because our stadium is too small for the GHSA to be happy. C’est la vie!

Just think if your star player Alec couldn’t perform where do u think Newman would be right now. I just want u to state the facts about a game when u beat some one.I love football that’s why I watch the games on comcast . I’ve been watching this board since the play-offs began and I’ve noticed that NO ONE has picked Rockdale Co. to do anything but LOSE!!! 3 weeks of picks, 3 weeks of victories!! Yall guys, keep on sleeping on the Bulldogs. Those guys are playing DEFENSE and they’re doing things as a TEAM to win games. This will be a squeaker: Rockdale wins over Clarke Central for their 4th road win and advances to the title game against who? None other than those Bears!!!! I believe that those two haven’t played each other since 79′ when the Bears had Freddie Gilbert and Co. They destroyed the Bulldogs back then 48-0 and went on to the quarter-finals.

David Grantham: I am going to clarify for this board something really quickly. You say that you are defending your character. I am openly questioning why you feel that you are at place to call out a Hall of Fame Georgia High School football coach. I stand firm in my questions about why you believe you are a person to go on record to question Conrad Nix.
Nix is a proven winner. No coach in Northside history is even close to the guy. I live in Atlanta and I find it disgusting that Northside has so many “experts” about football. If you take away Nix’s fine record, Northside is a slightly above 0.500 program. When you were at Northside, our Eagles were a borderline joke. When I was at Northside, our football team was mediocre, at best. We got “Peachtree Ridged” by Robert Davis and Warner Robins regularly. Your first year of high school Warner Robins beat Northside 41-6. 41-6, David.
I do not question your character. I do question what on your resume gives you the crown on being the Armchair Quarterback. As I have said, you are entitled to your opinion. I am certainly entitled to my ability to question you. Deal with it.
I scrolled through some of the posts you left, long after I was in bed. Let me say to this board. ENR played sports at Northside. David Grantham played sports at Northside. There would not be a living rationabl person who would question the athletic accomplishments, academic accomplishments, leadership, etc. at Northside HS. The same could be said of David Grantham. However, there is a difference between DG and ENR.

gdawg4: What a hypocrit! I have been on this board for a few seasons. I have heard people call one another curse words (Brookwood Mom, did it to me just a couple of weeks ago). I have heard people literally call out teenage children a been bad players.
I have NEVER seen you call them out on this site. Interesting.
The sun is going to rise in my life with or without this site, partner. Some of the stuff that has been on this board is childplay compared to this. Unlike you, I have defended players from schools that I have no clue about. David Grantham literally called out Devon Pike and Conrad Nix. Since I know DG and his athletic resume at Northside, I called him out.
Frankly, I would do the same for any person who found it necessary to call out a high school player. I have done it on this site regularly. Franky, Northside players are rarely called out on this site because Northside usually wins. It is usually players on losing teams called out. Feel free to scroll through sites. I defend those kids in the same manner.
You can call out a team, a coach (who is a grown man). However, calling out a player by name is crossing the line. I am going to say something, especially when it comes from a person who’s athletic resume I am so familiar with.

MLK fan you wrote
“Newman u got a lot of luck the last two weeks with Mack brown being injured last week and two fumbles in the first half against Grayson that were not called one of the fumbles would have been returned for a touchdown and u scored a field goal instead . You have a good team but are just getting by “.
Look I know losing was a bitter pill but look “getting by” means beating who is in front of you I wished Mack Brown would have played we wanted your best………. let me ask you this why did MLK not wrap the hamstring, why did they not have a stationary Bike on the sideline, MLK is probably the most athletic team we faced but they were also undisciplined and the coaching did not adjust you were up by 6 at the half partly because of a fake punt play….Newnan adjusted to the kickoff in the second half we moved Ransby #10 and Ogletree #39 up to where the kick would go (Now if I were only up by 6(and fortunate to have 3 of that) and did not have my best player playing, away from home, I would not have kicked it to the other teams best player that was moved up to received that) You kick it deep and use what got you there; your defense!!!! Coaching cost you,,,another example: MLK’s second field goal you had the ball at Newnan’s 2 with first down because Newnan had too many players on the field you choose to keep the three rather than attempt to score a TD, another example: You go for it 4th and 1 at (your) 23 Cmon man that is not coaching when it is the 3rd quarter….You are fortunate that Newnan’s Offense were undisciplined and lethargic in the first half…. if you change your coaching decisions with those athletes you will go farther than the second round??? Hey Good luck next year…

INthatrenches: Watch the Colquitt County vs. Stephenson game. I have NEVER seen a high school team that allowed its players to celebrate after catching a pass or rushing for 8+ yards as much as the Jaguars. It was shocking. The chest bumping and trash talking for simply plays.
The problem is many observers in DeKalb County do not see the problem with this behavior. There is not the necessary focus in high school football in the public schools in DeKalb County to win at the highest levels. It is a shame, because I believe that players do what they are coached to do. The way that kids act on the field is a representation of their coaching.
For programs like Stephenson, Martin Luth King, and Southwest DeKalb, it is all about coaching. One of those schools should be beating down Rick Tomberlin’s door!

You want a cookie? You know you are probably going to win it all. You are not fooling anyone. Most likely you are a Lovett fan or you would not keep getting so puffed up about this. I know we need a kicker, it directly cost us 2 games. However, we don’t play soccer here. When you barely have 450 in a high school and around 70 is in the band, you go with what you got. I know we dress out 60, but only 20 play. I personally, along with the majority of our fans, think we should start a petition to put one of our (never getting on the field) freshmen on that duty and let them do that at practice instead of watching. The richie rich stuff is the comments made prior to the game. ” Gee ya know we can’t find Folkston on the map.” That is insulting to a community that has a 25 percent unemployment rate. That is where that comes from. I never said all of your fans were that way, however some were, including your AD that called more than twice for directions. Given the fact that we started the season unranked I think we did pretty good. With that being said, you were the best team we played by far. If you are going to say that our lack of kicker wasn’t the reason we lost maybe you should watch the game film. As for the team speed, your #4 on offense and #3 and #23 on D were the only ones that could keep up. I do not root for north teams ever and won’t. Not very many of us down here do. When a team goes down we root for our neighbors, like Camden, Clinch, ect. That is because alot of us are related….

Inthatrenches: The truth of the matter is the conversation has now moved out of metro Atlanta. I was really surprised to see some of the posters on this site attempting to claim Newnan as a metro Atlanta school. Last week, Newnan was going to be metro Atlanta roadkill.
Remember, GrayRam. He must be in some sort of protective custody program. He wanted to talk about Peachtree Ridge and Northside. Many Grayson posters did not even find it necessary to talk about the undefeated Cougars of Newnan. Newnan was just an afterthought. I warned these Grayson posters. I remember when Northside looked past Newnan. The Cougars gave us a beating that Northside fans will NEVER forget.
If our young Eagles do not get healthy quickly, we may be traveling down that dark, cold road again. We could not move the football against Peachtree Ridge. The AJC did not tell the story. They wrote that PRidge bottled up Shaquille O’Neill and Briar Van Brunt. The truth is Van Brunt went down with a concussion in the 2nd quarter (do to big hitting from the Lions) and O’Neill broke two fingers over a week ago.
May we play Colquitt County again?

If the GHSA was not so focused on forcing every top program from outside of the metro Atlanta to play one another in the first two rounds, we would see more metro Atlanta programs falling.

Then, they actually kicked the football. Do these coaches in DeKalb County know what a squib kick is or do they teach their kids to kick it to the up man?

The Georgia Dome is better for me (maybe you) because I live in Midtown. I can get on MARTA and get to the Dome or drive 5 minutes to the Dome. I loved the semifinal format for the same reason Randy suggested.
I understand why the GHSA has moved the finals to the Georgia Dome. I am certain it helps them make more money. It also helps with television, which I expect to grow in the current format. For me, I was going to go to see my Eagles in Warner Robins or Newnan.

Seriously, Inthatrenches, Conrad Nix saved us. Our season was finished. It has not been properly said. Peachtree Ridge literally dominated us. I think Bill Ballard made a mistake milking the clock. On the other hand, the PRidge defense gave NOTHING!
We have to get #6, Shaquille O’Neill. I would like to have #13, Briar Van Brunt. I believe that the other QB gives us some expanded flexibility (Masteller, #4). To defend Van Brunt, without O’Neill we do not have the necessary flexibility. We have to get it this week or it is going to be a long Friday night. O’Neill is our best offensive player and has been all year. He is the engine. Van Brunt plays off of him. He was forced to do everything on Friday and we really ran into some problems.
I am going to tease my friends from Gwinnett County. However, Peachtree Ridge could have easily beat us. It sounds like Grayson could have beaten Newnan. The important thing to remember (GrayRam, SuwaneeOwns, and BulldawgBite) is neither did. It is officially girls’ basketball season in Gwinnett County.
We need to get healthy, Inthatrenches, or it is going to be girls’ basketball season at Northside too.
I have no doubt that Nix will have us ready. You should have seen the opening play for Northside and the play that we tied the game on. We may have had negative yards and it was just brilliance…similar to the big play against Lowndes County. The guy is just a step ahead of practically every coach in the state.

randy prosen……..I thought it was a foolish idea to move the semi’s from the dome……..I mean what idiot came up with the idea?……The 20 top teams in Georgia get to showcase their talent across the country and around the globe(web)…..Potential scholly’s lost , I know a couple kids over the years that got looks and late offers from colleges solely based on thier performances at the dome, makes you wonder how many kids will miss out on scholly’s , not from D- 1’s ,but from D-2’s and HBCU”s that don’t have the big recruiting budgets as D-1″s and used the semi weekend to see Georgia’s top talent from 20 teams or find a diamond that was overlooked…..Now cut in half…….As far as the Championships at the dome , I disagree also….the semi’s at the dome everyone benefits…..The Championships’s belong to the community’s ,more so in south and middle Georgia…….The 2007 AAAA championship game between Northside and Ware Co. was the most electrifying game that i have ever attended , Ware’s entire community was invovled , It seemed to be the biggest event in the county in years . Small community’s like Ware and others across the state shouldn’t be robbed of such events…..No thought was even given to the folks who couldn’t afford the trip and tickets to the Dome or the Elderly that maybe couldn’t put up with the 4,5, or 6 hour ride from south Ga………Randy this is almost criminal what was done.

I truly believe that having to play region 1 so early and often over the years has made Newnan what we are today. We haven’t got there yet but we feel we are close. I think Coach Tomberlin stated our defense looked at lot like a region 1 defense. We always had these kind of athletes but coaching and discipline molded them together. Randy: I am with Reeze. If a round is in the Georgia Dome, I would take the semifinals or even the quarterfinals. Can you guys imagine Friday night games all at one location? Friday night had multiple overtime games and the competition was fierce.
I am for the State Championships being played in local communities. If the GHSA made that change (I do not believe they ever will), I would be all for the semifinals being at the Georgia Dome. However, to place the semis and the finals at the Georgia Dome is too much.
It is one or the other. I would lean towards the semifinals. As Reeze (and Randy), said, it brings more kids to the Georgia Dome. The games were all in two days and it seemed to work. I have heard that the Atlanta schools pushed hard for the State Championships to be played at the Georgia Dome. go figure.

Who you got this Friday, Camden or Colquitt? Watching Herron’s team is a thing of beauty. Precision Wing T offense, no penalties, no mistakes. Days a monster on both sides of the ball. Black is Back,
Thanks for your heartfelt explanation. I just discovered this blog about three days ago when I was looking for info about the then-upcoming game with Charlton, and had not read any of the offensive remarks made by Lovett fans. On behalf of the vast majority of Lovett fans, I apologize for the insults of the few. I know the Lovett AD and find it impossible to believe that he, or anyone employed by the school, would actually call more than once to find the “best” route to Folkston. It’s all to easy to find any town and one or more routes on folding maps, Mapquest and using GPS units. However, the “best” route is known by people who frequently make the trip. I assume the calls were from one or more people, posing as our AD, for the sole purpose of offending and/or getting a laugh from their friends. Again, I am certain it was no one employed by Lovett, but apologize none the less for the actions of that or those Lovett fans. Whoever it was had to be young and foolish, because anyone old enough to know anything about the last ten years, at least, of AA football certainly knows who and where Charlton County is. And anyone who knows the success of CCHS knows you don’t want to give the Indians any extra fuel for their fire. I had no idea that your county has such a painfully high number of unemployed citizens, and I am truly sorry to know that now. All communities are being hit hard by this economy, but 25% is shocking. From learning about CCHS football over the last ten years and knowing that the character of your community is at the core of your students’ hearts and souls as taught by their parents, I am confident that the people of Charlton County will withstand this test and be blessed by God. Concerning your ongoing need for a kicker, some business or individual/group of individuals there may want to consider paying for a community coach from the University of Jacksonville, Valdosta State, etc. to come once or twice a week and develop 2-3 kickers. Maybe the Jacksonville Jaguars would do it as a public relations tool. Maybe one of the Bailey’s who went pro would foot the bill. Regardless the cost would be manageable, and many schools do just that for a specialty in different sports i.e. pole vaulting. Thanks again to Charlton County High School and all its supporters for being great hosts, and for setting such a wonderful example for communities everywhere! Best wishes for a bright future and may God bless you indeed!!!

6AA Why do you say Lovett won the coin toss, my understanding is there was no toss at all, just a decision by GHSA to have the game in Calhoun. Could you verify that, even though the game is set. I’d like to know if the reporting I’m reading is accurate.

Finally down to the final four AAAAA. Colquitt, Camden, Newnan, and Northside. Newnan and Northside have unfinished business from 08 with Camden. I know both teams have that in the back of their minds. Colquitt has redemption from getting bounced in 1st round by Camden. Camden defending state champs, got no respect from no media, even as defending champs. Hard to say what’s going on in the “Teams Head”. Seems that everyone looked at 08 team, as a team full of Seniors, 35 to be exact. Most of them did not start on offense or defense. Camden was 9th, 10th and 11th grade heavy in starters. The coaches know how to get the best out of the team. This team seems to be the same as last year. Camden has a Blue Collar mentality. They strap it on, line up and play. Their mentality is about teamwork, no one player is above the teams goal. Case in point, the Senior QB quit before the last regular season game. No problem, insert a Junior, the “Team” rolls on. Coaching and dedication to the program. All four teams look the same from what I see. Saw Northside this year, looks like last year, little faster I thnik. Went to Newnan, look the same, but a shade faster, great move to put your best player on offense as well. Saw Colquitt, the single wing allows them to put more blockers to the left or right, creating an unbalnced attack on the defense, love the toss sweep, lots of speed. Camden, what can be said. No big name players, lots of speed and stout on the defense with speed. Young guns have matured over the season. For the rest of AAAAA good season to you all, but then there were 4.
