Can Lassiter be stopped? Records continue to fall

I know Camden County beat Lowndes, and I know DeKalb County laid an egg in the colors of Stephenson and SW DeKalb (not to mention ML King and Tucker and Marist).

But those need to wait until we’ve discussed what’s going on at Lassiter High in Marietta.

Is Hutson Mason ridiculous or what?

The Lassiter quarterback threw for 530 yards and eight touchdowns in Lassiter’s 70-49 victory over South Gwinnett, and Mason didn’t even play the fourth quarter. He’s got over 4,000 yards passing on the season and 54 touchdowns, both shattering state records, and he’s not finished.

Lassiter has scored at least 42 points in nine straight games. The 70 against South Gwinnett are a record in a regulation playoff game in the highest classification.

It’s not enough to ask if there’s a team that is able to stop Lassiter. The question is whether any team knows how to stop Lassiter.

Georgia is a traditionally run-oriented, hit-you-in-the-mouth football state. Chip Lindsey is from Alabama, where the no-huddle spread offense has taken hold. Rush Propst helped revolutionize Alabama football with this offense at Hoover.

Lindsey was Propst’s offensive coordinator in 2007, though he was running the spread before that. Propst is now head coach at Colquitt County, which plays Lassiter this week.

Does Propst know how to stop the monster he helped create?

The last time I’ve seen something in Georgia that changed the way we think was Brookwood’s state champion in the mid-1990s that dominated with large, powerful, weight-trained linemen. Parkview maintained that formula through the early 1990s. Recently, it’s been Wing T teams (Lowndes and Camden County) that have dominated the big class. The current No. 1 team, Grayson, is a Wing T team.

I’m convinced of this much: What Lassiter is doing not a gimmick offense. It’s a relatively novel offense in Georgia, but it’s a legitimate offense run by a quarterback who is as accurate a thrower and as well-versed in what he’s doing in this system as any player in the country.

Anybody can win Class AAAAA. There’s no sense guessing. I’d give the least chance to Colquitt County and Newnan, the two teams I’ve seen win in the playoffs, if only because they generate the kind of offense you’d expect to see in a state champion. I also question Lassiter’s defense. I’m thinking it will be one of the Gwinnett teams. North Gwinnett has the best balance of offense & defense and gets Camden at home. …

In AAAA, congratulations to Region 8-AAAAA for putting three teams in the QF. That region plays a 10-game region schedule, so there’s no way to gauge its strength until the playoffs. I still see no legitimate state contender there, but a good region.

Somebody wrote me in preseason and said that he’d email me when SW DeKalb, my No. 1 team in preseason, lost in the second round. But I think that person was a Lowndes fan, so he’ll be too humble to gloat this week.

*True Blue*, you under estimated Colquitt County. Colquitt will put an end to Lasso offense with their strong D. I saw the scrimmage between them when Colquitt beat Lassiter. Colquitt was successfully with putting lots of pressure on Hudson (sack him, rush throws, etc..)which limited his passing threat. Coach Propst has the criptonite for the Lasso offense. Basically, Lassiter’s D is not strong so they will get out scored by Colquitt like in the scrimmage back in August this year.

Callitlikeitis, i dont really think that scrimmage counts for anything sorry to say. the lassiter offense struggled at the beginning of the season but they have heated up and havent slowed down since. i agree the best way to beat lassiter is blitzes and a strong dline but idk how good colquitt is at that. even if they are good at that lassiter should be able to score at least some points so the colquitt offense will have to play well. im not saying colquitt cant beat them but both teams have their work cut out for them

Todd, I don’t understand your statement that you give the least chance of winning AAAAA to Colquitt and Newnan because they generate the kind of offense you expect to see in a state champion. I guess you meant to say we don’t generate the kind of offense of a state champion. I respectfully disagree but we will see . If Newnan gets past Grayson, I truly believe we will win it all.

Surprise! Surprise! Todd Holcomb shamelessly with pom-poms and ranting about the next great metropolitan Atlanta football program. Can Lassiter be stopped? Are you kidding me? The question will be will Lassiter be able to keep a top tier program under 50 or 60 points.

To call Lassiter’s level of competition, thus far, questionable is an understatement. These guys have yet to load on to a bus and actually play someone. I remember a few years ago when Todd Holcomb was doing cartwheels about a guy called the White Buffalo. The White Buffalo became the Insignificant Buffalo playing on the road in a hostile environment as his team was violated by 24 points.

I remember Todd Holcomb hyping Peachtree Ridge as potential 2009 National Championships. The Lions then loaded on a bus with a national ranking as high as 8 and traveled to one of the most hostile environments in the state of Georgia. The Lions became kittens at Martin Stadium. Lowndes County beat Peachtree Ridge so badly that Todd Holcomb has yet to even speak about the manner on this board. He had plenty to say about how great Peachtree Ridge was. Then, he went into protective custody.

What he did do is begin to imply that Lowndes County was something special. Ironically, the Vikings rose to third in the nation. Of course, the Vikings had to load on a bus and travel to the state’s most challenging venue, McConnell-Talbert Stadium. Of course, Lowndes was not the team hyped to be. Now, Lowndes County High School is focusing on girls’ basketball.

Todd has a tendency to overhype unproven programs, especially if those programs are from metro Atlanta. We all understand where this comes from. He wants to increase readership and pub his high school newsletter, which I am certain will come at a cost at some point in the near future.

The bottom line is Lassiter has yet to play anyone. Now, they face a team that only finished third in their region. Colquitt County was not even competitive against programs like Lowndes County and Northside-Warner Robins. It was like a scrimmage game.

When Lassiter plays one real program (South of the Gnat line, Todd), you will see a violation that you will NEVER forget. Remember when the world was screaming about a college quarterback from Hawaii named Colt Brennan. Then, his team played their first real game against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The guy went from a late 1st Round to middle 2nd Round projection to a guy who was almost undrafted. Real competition has a tendency to expose people. Lassiter will get exposed. Soon.

We know what it means to get “Peachtree Ridged” in a football game. Lassiter has one more week before they get Peachtree Rdiged. As for the aforementioned Lions, if you guys thought playing at Martin Stadium was a challenge, wait until you see how Northside opens the Christmas holidays for Peachtree Ridge High School at McConnell-Talbert. Our young Eagles are going to rip those silver spoons out of the mouths of the Lion cubs from Peachtree Ridge.

Like that attitude Sanity Grayson will be tough at home but Newnan may squeak out a 2pt win that defense will have to keep a gooseegg on the board for Grayson I like the matchups I like our adjustments and our short passing game… we will have to shadow Pemberton with Strakose and Zander maybe a third LB he is small and can hide behind their O’line but we will see what this Newnan team can do on the road against a extremely well coached and talented team… We may have to pass to Run….?

ENR i totally understand that Lassiter is unproven. they have played no one that has passed the 2nd round. but the way they win is convincing NOW. i do expect them to win this week but not a blowout like they are used to. but to say that the colquitt NSWR game was like a scrimmage game is very very wrong. you should know that. they are a good program and played you close. i really would watch out versus ptree ridge if i were you. you may find them soft and priveliged but that doesnt mean that they dont play well in the playoffs. nobody can deny that. inthatrenches i think if you just shut down the grayson line of scrimmage you will be fine. i think both teams know that this will not be a shootout

Inthatrenches: Perhaps, you witnessed another Northside-Union Grove football game. The truth of the matter is Union Grove played hard and competed well. Nonetheless, UG scored twice. They kicked a field goal after Northside threw an interception inside the 10. UG actually lost yardage before settling on a field goal. UG also ran a kickoff back for 6.

UG’s offense NEVER really advanced the football. UG’s offense NEVER created points. As I told another Northside poster, UG lost their starting quarterback earlier in the season. However, it is completely dishonest for you to portray a scenario whereby that game was ever at risk for Northside. It was not. I knew it. You knew it. Union Grove’s players knew it, as well.

BulldawgBite: You have had Peachtree Ridge pom-poms all season long. I would expect nothing short of you hyping Peachtree Ridge tirelessly. The funny thing about P-Ridge is no one ever asks an honest question about their program. Who has P-Ridge beaten this season. Every team that P-Ridge has played that is good has easily beaten P-Ridge. Guess what, Bulldawg Bite? Contrary to your incessant Northside Eagle hating, most reasonable posters know that Northside is good. Therefore, one could logically assume that Peachtree Ridge will lose to a good program.

You can throw in the state of Georgia’s most challenging venue in McConnell-Talbert Stadium. It is rare, I mean almost impossible, for a team to travel over two hours and actually win a big road game. Suwanee is an over three hour bus trip to McConnell-Talbert Stadium on South Davis Drive in Warner Robins. Unless a few silver spoons are going to get mommy and daddy to get some private jets for the team, that bus ride is going to be a monster. P-Ridge will have to leave early to prohibit getting caught in traffic on the south side of the city, especially in Henry County. Do me a favor, BulldawgBite, tell me how can you simply throw out the history of teams losing on the road and throw out Northside’s undeniable record at home playing at McConnell-Talbert?

I already know the answer. You are a Northside Eagle hater and you lose sleep with the potential of Northside playing North Gwinnett. Like Peachtree Ridge, you are afraid. Northside is 120-13 since 2000! You can create whatever fantasy world that you like. At the end of the day, Northside will be 121-13 since 2000 when the soft Lions are boarding their bus Friday night. We will return their silver spoons. Take them back to Gwinnett County. We are a true American military town. We do not need silver spoons down in Wonderful Robins.

The better question will be can Lassiter’s defense step when it is called to do so? It will be called to do so. Think strong defensive team, a good ball control offense and Lassiter will have a recipe or their own disaster. If Lassiter can stop the run when called to do so then they have a chance, otherwise their demise it right around the corner.

Here we go again everybody hating on lassiter! You say they don’t play anyone well last I checked Peachtree ridge barely beat Kell(14-7) who Lassiter beat easliy, they beat Roswell who was tied almost all game with grayson, they beat S. gwinnett who lost to peachtree by like 5. So what are ya’ll talking about they dont play anyone. Next you talk about the defense if you came to either playoff game lassiter put in their 9th grade and jv players for the entire 4th quarter and the other teams left their starters in to get cheap scores to make the game look closer. Next how did they lose to colquit when the game was stoped 1 series into the 3rd quarter? And Rush Propst blocked a kick for a touchdown when it was agreed before the game that they wouldn’t rush the kicks. They also ran a kickoff back for a touchdown but lassiter played all 9th grade and jv players on special teams no varsity players at all. Colquit scored 1 offensive touchdown! SO ONCE AGAIN WHAT ARE YA’LL TALKING ABOUT! Lassiter is a good football team and will prove such until then please stop hating on them. Go trojans!!!!!!

I’ve seen many Lassiter games. I’ve also seen many other teams during the years. I’ve never seen a HS offense this competent. They just don’t make many errors. Plus, I think others downgrading Roswell as a quality team is uninformed. They are a first class team, and Lassiter dispatched them rather easily (not as easily as N. Forsyth or S. Gwinnett, mind you).

Colquitt may be the only team that can stop them, given they run a similar offense. At least their defense will have a clue. But to think that the scrimmage at the beginning of the year will be indicitive of the outcome is nuts. Lassiter’s special teams were a complete mess that night, and the offense was still trying to figure out where all the moving parts were going to be. That is no longer a problem.

ENR- how was the Colquitt-Northside game a scrimmage? CC lost by 3 and thats after the refs cheated us out of a 3rd down…i still dont see how hard it is to count to 4..1,2,3,4…obviously the refs couldnt count.

the problem with Lassiter is that they have yet to play a team as athletic as Colquitt. talent-wise, Colquitt is no North Gwinnett or Stephenson but we certainly have the edge in team speed and overall athleticism over Lassiter from what i saw in the preseason scrimmage. i also think our offense will perform better against Lassiter…Lassiter’s defense is not the same as Lowndes, Northside, or Stephenson.

*BulldawgBite and LHS*, I was at the scrimmage in August 2009 and Colquitt totally dominated the line of scrimmage. Lassiter looked totally out manned up front. Lassiter could not block Colquitt’s D-line especially 6′ 6″ Cameron Erving. Also, Lassiter had trouble with the speed of players like Tevin King and # 4 (look out for this guy cause he will burn you). I know that Lassiter’s O-line hasn’t made that much improvement in the O-line. It is just the competition got weaker. Football games are usually won on the line of scrimmage. You both will see. I saw Colquitt stand up against the number 1 defense in Class AAAAA (Stephenson) and a very strong offense this past Friday. Stephenson has the most D1 talent in the state and Lassiter does not compare to Stephenson’s talent. If Colquitt can beat Stephenson, then they certainly can beat Lassiter *again.*

Callitlikeitis- Obviously Stephenson didnt get the memo about #4 Quin Roberson because he burned them for kick returns of 65 and 80 yards. he also ran a kick back for a TD in that scrimmage against Lassiter…i dont think Lassiter has a player on their roster that can run with Roberson or King. against Stephenson, CC ran a lotta screen plays and just had a conservative gameplan against that tough Jaguar defense. look for our offense to open up A LOT against Lassiter’s defense. we couldnt really take any shots down the field against Stephenson because their d-line wouldnt give our QB the time and their secondary was too fast to get burned deep. that wont be the case against Lassiter

However, I will be humble and let him claim it for his own. It sounds like he is wavering, but I stand by my pick. The Lassiter QB will be so rushed all night that he will throw at least 5 Int’s. Compared to CCHS’s defense, especially the DBs he has been playing against some JV teams. Huge difference when you play with “the big boys”. Also, NSWR will have no problem with P’tree Ridge. I’m not going to criticize ENR because he’s one of the best things that happened to this blog. He drives the ratings and puts fannies in the seats here.

But having said that, I must set the record straight on a couple of things: I never hyped the White Buffalo, and I certainly never predicted Marist would beat Northside. That was somebody else. I never said Peachtree Ridge was the best team in the state. That was someone else. In fact, it was Bob Sphire of North Gwinnett, and he might turn out to be right. I never said Lassiter couldn’t be stopped. I just asked the question that’s on the minds of many. Nobody has stopped the team yet, and it’s getting late. But I was the one that didn’t rank Lassiter until after the 10th game of the season. So I’m a Lassiter skeptic, but I think Lassiter & Hutson Mason represent a hell of a story, whether they’re in metro Atlanta or metro Warner Robins. Two national publications agree, as MaxPreps and Rivals High both have features on Mason this weekend.

I am guilty of predicting Lowndes to win the state title. I can’t always be right. : )

Inthatrenches: I honestly believe that every team remaining is very good and capable of winning a state championship. We have Peachtree Ridge. That needs to be our team’s only focus. What I believe is a great challenge for young teams to take one game at a time is what concerns me with our young Eagles this season. Our kids do not play full games with great focus. We better, should we expect to continue to advance.

Since I do not play for Northside anymore, I can make predictions. I believe that Grayson is the best team in the state of Georgia, and one of the best in America. Meanwhile, Newnan has great sports tradition and are highly talented. Both are better than our Eagles from a talent standpoint.

If we won the toss and played at McConnell-Talbert Stadium in the semifinals, I would prefer to face Grayson. Newnan is one of the few teams in the state of Georgia that has proven mentally strong enough to travel to the MAC and beat Northside. For a matter of fact, Newnan is the only team to really kick us around in the past thirteen seasons. With all due respect to Grayson, I do not want to see Newnan at the MAC.

If we lost the toss and need to travel, I would prefer to face Newnan. Grayson has proven to have one of the best home field advantages in the state. One may also conclude that Grayson is not going to lose at home. If our Eagles are on the road, I would prefer to take my chances against Newnan.

Truth be told, this thing is wide open. We need to gather with our families and every able bodies Eagle fan needs to pack McConnell-Talbert Stadium and cheer our Eagles this Friday night against a team that Todd Holcomb was wearing a skirt for earlier this season. Then, we will look ahead to Grayson or Newnan.

Now, you are crawling in a hole and calling it a toss up. You are fooling yourself, if you believe any team is going to get on a bus, travel three plus hours, and beat Northside High School at McConnell-Talbert Stadium, especially Peachtree Ridge.

You did not answer one of the questions. Name the strong team that Peachtree Ridge has played and beaten this season. That program has had three different coaches in four seasons. They do not have stability at the top of their program. Therefore, there are some problems for any program that intends to beat Northside, a model of program stability.

Also, I don’t know that blitzing is a smart idea vs. Lassiter. Mason dumps the ball off and throws screens pretty well. I think you’ve got to get pressure from the front four and play assignment defense. The best defenses to stop Lassiter would be those with 11 good players, not a handful of great players and a few week ones because Lassiter’s offense is to exploit the weaknesses. Rush Propst has my cell number if he wants more input. : )

I will say Colquitt was impressive on defense. I was sitting behind the Colquitt coaches in the press box, and about three times they predicted what Stephenson was about to run. One of those times was on the QB sneak on fourth-and-1 and the Colquitt 41. Maybe that’s not uncommon, but I found it interesting.

Also, let me make it clear that I like all 8 teams in the AAAAA quarterfinals. Sometimes you’ll see teams in the quarters that just found a hole in the draw. But all 8 of these are to be taken seriously. What I saw in Colquitt and Newnan were offenses that had to make a big play to score. Neither drove the ball on a good defense. Does that mean anything? I just think it will be hard for a team like that to win three straight.

TNGADAWG: Hey, thanks for the remind about tabbing Colquitt as the sleeper! I’d forgotton about that. I think Stephenson’s schedule hurt. Stephenson’s QB made four terrible mistakes under pressure. I’m not criticizing him, as he’s had a great season and was first-team all-region, but I don’t think he’d seen that kind of consistent pass rush this season until Friday night. Stephenson’s defense was nails, but it wasn’t the first time Colquitt has faced a good defense, and Colquitt kept fighting and finally sprung a big play.

Todd Holcomb worked for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in the fall of 2008, when the AJC rated the much anticipated game between Northside and Lowndes County at Martin Stadium as the 2nd best high school football game in the history of high school football in this state.

This fall, Todd Holcomb said that the game between Peachtree Ridge and Lowndes County was going to be better than that game (rated the 2nd best of all time) because the 2008 Northside team was very good, but the Peachtree Ridge team was “great.”

Todd, are you seriously denying that statement? Are you attempting to distance your pre-game hype of Peachtree Ridge before the Lions were absolutely violated at Martin Stadium in Valdosta, GA. I wish Lowndes County was still playing and at least one Viking poster was around to support what I was saying.

If you rate the 2008 Northside-Lowndes County game as the 2nd most anticipated game in the glorious history of Georgia football, then say that the game will not live up to the Peachtree Ridge-Lowndes County game of 2009 because Peachtree Ridge is a great team, you are hyping…I misspoke…you are OVERHYPING what is in fact a mediocre Peachtree Ridge team. An 8-2 regular season is far from “great.”

It is classic AJC journalism to distance oneself from previous Peachtree Ridge Lion hyping! Peachtree Ridge’s poor road effort has made Peachtree Ridge a verb meaning getting the score run up on your team. Todd, you in fact, proclaimed that Peachtree Ridge was great on this site. How dare you deny it. :-) I live here in Atlanta. That is classic AJC.

Vince, as I said, I didnt mean disrespect to Lassiter. I was just stating the fact I have lived in the area and was oblivious to them. I will also mention that could be a “me problem.” I frequent the Marietta area, but dont drive around looking for high schools (or thats what I tell the police anyway).

I see Marietta High School stuff. I see McEachern stuff. I see Hiram/Paulding stuff. And, BTW, that stuff is a t two Wal-marts, so it doesnt just have to be in your “region.” If the stuff will sell, they will have it at your nearest Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart caught on early that people buy that stuff. You cant live within 30 miles of Warner Robins without seeing some Northside or Warner Robins Demons paraphernalia or at least knowing the teams exist . Car tags, flags, stickers, shirts—they are not hard to find. The pride is part of the community.

I am just saying I have lived in Cobb and Paulding for the last 5 years, and I frequent Marietta regularly, and had not seen squat. This isnt meant to knock Lassiter. Just pointing out my viewpoint. It doesnt mean anything about the football team. I would question the support and pride, but then like I said, I am not in a position to truely question that because it could just be a “me problem.”

CALLITLIKEITIS, STEPHENSON beat themselves with turnovers, penalties and special team. STEPHENSON had over 400 yards of total offense to COLQUITT COUNTY 156 YARDS. STEPHENSON also had 20 first down to COLQUITT COUNTY 7 first down. You can’t win in the playoff with turnovers and penalties. Our offense and special team gave up 19 points and we lost 22-21. I didn’t never underestimate COLQUITT COUNTY. I just knew if we didn’t turn the ball over that we would win the game. CALLITLIKEITIS , You can watch the game online at GHSA.TV and you will see why STEPHENSON LOST. From the game summary STEPHENSON DOMINATED, but from the scoreboard COLQUITT COUNTY won 22-21.

Cobbfan: I know that many of you metro Atlanta guys don’t get outside the city. Yes, Lassiter has a nice scoreboard. However, Northside has a video screen on our scoreboard as well. It is not unique to Lassiter. The difference between Northside and Lassiter is on Northside’s screen one may actually see footage of the team winning…unlike Lassiter, who is enjoying one of their few runs in school history.

Once you guys beat the third best team in our region, the party will be over. Then, Lassiter can get focused upon girls’ basketball, baseball, and the sports that really matter at Lassiter.

ENR,

I think region 6 deserves a little more respect than it gets. I think Lassiter is clicking so well right now that they get by Colquitt and into the semis. Walton (region 6) made it to the semis in ‘04 and ‘07 and Roswell won (tied for) a state title in ‘06. If Lassiter wins a state title this year, that will give region 6 two state titles in 4 years! Is that not enough?

ENR–Your description of PR as a silver-spoon school is completely unfounded; although the PR district does include Sugarloaf Country Club and some other high-dollar subdivisions, it also includes many of the poorest apartment complexes in Gwinnett County. I worked there, and it is one of the most economically diverse schools in Gwinnett. Talk trash about them all you want, but at least be accurate. With that said, I’m from Warner Robins and graduated from Northside. I can only hope that the Eagles destroy them and bring home another state title.

I cannot believe that TrueBlue just reeled off a diatribe explaing why Stephenson lost, and did not even once mention the fact that the head coach was either completely inept, or had a brain freeze. I have a feeling inept would be more accurate. Not going for 2 points on their last TD cost them the game. Maybe they should start giving the Atlanta area coaches the Wonderlic test that they give the NFL QBs. Seems to be some highly incompetent head coaches in a very small radius.

Todd, I am perfectly fine with anyone giving it to me, including you. We both know that you had very high admiration for Peachtree Ridge when the season started. At the end of the day, a new group of Eagles will enjoy their own experiences and create their own Friday night memories. My glory days in Eagle uniforms and representing Northside High School are long gone. It will not matter what is written on this AJC blog. My guess is only a small number of residents in Warner Robins actually log on to the AJC site and an even smaller number of Eagle players have any clue about this site.

We proud residents of Warner Robins who live here in Atlanta are going to believe in our Eagles either way. Most are much more modest than me and are going to love our Blue no matter what. We know what “Northside Pride” means and we know that “It Is Great to Be A Northside Eagle!” We have great pride in our hometown, resently named the third best place to raise children in America and the best place to raise children in Georgia (by BusinessWeek).

Since 2000, Northside is 119-13. I have every reason to believe that Northside is going to win on most Friday nights, especially playing at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. At the MAC, our Eagles are 65-2 against all visiting teams since 2000 and are an amazing 23-1 against metropolitan Atlanta schools. Although some Peachtree Ridge players have famous fathers, that is not going to mean anything on that glorious field on South Davis Drive in our hometown in Middle Georgia.

Guys, you can give it to me. I lose no sleep when our Eagles play metro Atlanta programs, especially those like Peachtree Ridge. Give it to me all week. However, you can believe this. Northside is going to give it to Peachtree Ridge all Friday night. The Lions better identify ways to give it back or they will be Peachtree Ridged on a large stage in the State quarterfinals. Silver spoons will be ripped out of mouths in the coming days.

Peachtree Ridge High School has one of the highest household incomes of the average student compared to any public high school in the state. Anyone painting P-Ridge as anything else is stretching it. Every high school has apartment communities are a part of its student body. An overwhelming number of the over 2000 students at Peachtree Ridge do not live in apartments. Get real.

You are correct Lion backer. Lowndes County 51, Peachtree Ridge 17. I am scared to death. :-) I stared down Lowndes County posters and front-running Viking posters when Lowndes County faced our Eagles and the Vikings were rated #3 in the nation. Now, because Peachtree Ridge is Peachtree Ridge, I fear the Lions. I am certain that every good program South of the Gnat line is very afraid of Peachtree Ridge High School. I do not know if I will be able to sleep tonight.

I am not afraid of Peachtree Ridge. You should not be afraid of Northside High School, once regularly taunted at sporting events as Nerdside due to our schools excellence as the state’s best One Act, Literary, and Forensics program. However, on Friday night, Peachtree Ridge players will look around McConnell-Talbert Stadium and get very afraid. I guarantee it.

It is “Take the Silver Spoon Out of Your Mouth and Join Coach Arrington Week” at Peachtree Ridge High School. Perhaps, some of the Lions may join the Lion cheerleading team with Todd Holcomb. I am certain that the MAC will be an eye-opening experience for the Peachtree Ridge program.

Propst has done a great job at Colquitt County and had his team thoroughly prepared when we scrimmaged in August. Since that time I’ve seen a weekly improvement in Lassiter’s play – evidence of Chip Lindsey’s super coaching. Hutson Mason is remarkable to watch…32 for 39 Friday night against an athletic south gwinnett team that practices every day against their own fine passing offense. Our defense made a goal line stand at the end on the first half that woud have gotten the Comets within two scores…..was a huge momentum changer that kept us in charge. Should be a terrific game Friday Night

I get a little tired of people around the state using the “silver spoon” label to dismiss teams from Gwinnett County whenever a particular team is successful. What irritates me the most is that the supposed insult insinuates that financial success is somehow a bad thing. I understand that type of attitude is usually a product of jealousy and class envy, but the kind of warped logic that allows people to use success as an insult is a big part of what is wrong with our country as a whole. I’ll leave the rest of that discussion for the political boards, but I can’t resist pointing out the fallacy of logic used by this board’s resident expert, ENR, in his answer to Eagle Fan’s post about the demographics of Peachtree Ridge High School.

The average household income per student at P’tree Ridge may, or may not, be higher than other public high schools in the state, but that doesn’t invalidate the point that Eagle Fan makes when he points out that P’tree Ridge has a very diverse enrollment population and includes some very low income areas.

Maybe they don’t teach much about statistics outside of Metro-Atlanta, but using averages to draw conclusions is often misleading. A handful of students with a multi-million dollar family income can bump the average income way up without changing the actual income of families living below the poverty line.

Nearly 20% of students at P’tree Ridge qualify for free or reduced price lunches due to economic hardship, 8% are classified as “Limited English Proficient”, and a majority of the student population is from what is considered a minority ethnic background. While ENR’s argument may “feel” correct, the facts support the observations made by Eagle Fan.

I’m not trying to paint P’tree Ridge as an underprivileged school. Most students at P’tree Ridge aren’t living in apartments, but they aren’t living in Sugarloaf Country Club either. The typical student at P’tree Ridge has more in common with the typical student at Northside WR than he has with students living on either of the two extremes. All that has very little to do with football, but that’s exactly the point I’m making.

(For what it’s worth, I don’t have a dog in this fight – sorry M.V. – and don’t think PTR or Northside will be around in the final round. I’d actually like to see Lassiter run the table.)

I thought that this was about the Lassiter story. We have moved all over the map with this. Who cares how much money is in a high school. I agree Mason Hutson has been unreal, my concern is the lack of a running game or just enough to keep the defense honest. If this guy is the real deal, he has a great upside. Has he faced a defense which puts a lot of pressure up front, not just on the edges? Based on his stats, his receivers and him are on the same page. I have watched them on GHSA.TV and their receivers are good route runners. I also did not see teams putting a lot of pressue up the middle. He has a quick release as well. I watched his recievers over and over, and a lot of his passes are thrown before the receiver comes out of their routes. Coaches seem to be scheming to stop Mason, and not the receivers. I don’t care how well a quaterback can pass, if you take away his receivers, it’s a done deal. Lassiter throws 90% of the time. I seem them using the passing game as a Wing T team utilizes the running game. The exception is the the Wing T is designed to wear down your defense. The passing game is quick strike in nature, but can de a deadly weapon when used as a running game. Yards after the catch. Mason uses all of his receivers. This type of offense has to have a supporting ground game to win the Championship. Can they be stopped? Yes, anyone can. I think the key lies in the receivers and pressure up the middle by strong and fast linemen. Make him uncomfortable in the pocket, get his feet moving, take away his 1st, 2nd and 3rd reads. Seems like a lot to ask, but a well balanced and coached team with good discipline can make it difficult. Their defense gives up some points, so it is a we will just out score you mentality. You score once, we score twice, you score on a field goal, we will score a touchdown. We hold you to 3 and out, we will score a touchdown. This is a fun offense to watch I guess.

It would appear that from the numbers that some of Lassiter’s opponents have put up that the defense might be suspect. If they go up against a ball control offensive and limit the times Mason can get his hands on the ball the high numbers will probably fall. Again, the news reports and blogs don’t tell the whole story but it appears that South Gwinnett self destructed with turnovers and wasn’t able to get back in the game. Limit your mistakes, control the ball, and pressure the QB and you have a good chance of succeeding and Lassiter.

On a side note, isn’t great to see a team that has done poorly in the past do so well? I just hope it is not a one man show and they sink back to lower levels when Mason leaves.

after examining the stats from the Lassiter/South Gwinnett game the thing that strikes me is that the only loss south gwinnett had was a 10 point or so loss to Grayson that so many on here are calling one of the best teams in the nation and lassiter hung 70 on this same south gwinnett team. south gwinnett gave up 27 to that same grayson team. I would not put it past Lassiter to run the table. I would also suspect that someone is going to sign this QB from Lassiter now.

To beat Lassiter you need 4-5 guys putting pressure on their QB….blitzing from different spots will help, but Mason is uncanny with finding the open receiver…and their receivers are good at yards after catches. The Lassiter/Colquitt County game Friday promises to be very entertaining, with a great storyline. And, yeah, Lassiter CAN win the state championship, tho I’m taking North Gwinnett right now because they are the more balanced team. Grayson was good defensively, but too one dimensional on offense. They’ll lose to Newnan or NSWR. The other side of the brackett has the better teams for the possible state champion in 5A.

Todd. I’ve attended the last 3 Lassiter games – Roswell, N. Forsyth and S. Gwinnett. I’ve never seen anything even close to this at the HS level over the last 40 years. Hutson throws with pinpoint accuracy and always seems to find the open receiver. His receivers are also tremendous athletes who make Hutson’s numbers look even better with their RAC.

Question – Do you know if anyone is recruiting Griffin Roelle, # 5, a sr. at Lassiter. I’ve watched this kid now for the last 3 weeks and he’s got it all. He catches EVERYTHING and will NOT go down. Great body control. Quick and fast. Plays WR, punt return, KO return, holds for the PATs and FGs. Just looks to be an exceptional athlete and a WINNER that plays with a tremendous amount of HEART. The parents I spoke to at the game last Saturday told me that they had not heard of anyone recruiting him. I find that incredible if true.

Fred

SickandTired, your analysis might be true if they were similar offenses. Grayson is primarily a ball control run oriented offense. Looking at it from the other side, Grayson held SG to 16 points when Lassiter allowed 49 so our defense is capable against the pass. We scored 27 by running with very few passes. I think it has the potential to be a *very* good game should it work out that we meet.

alphadog

BTW, the Lassiter defense gives up so many points because they are on the field so much. Hudson and the offense scores so quickly that the D barely has time to get a drink and catch a breath. Don’t get down by 2 scores or your ball control offense will be an millstone around your neck. There’s more to this story than an awesome QB. Coach Lindsey has taken a 4-6 team and turned it into a power in 2 years. Kids are moving into the Lassiter district to play ball now so he’ll have even better talent to work with. Amazing what a good coach can do. Win or lose in the coming weeks you’ll hear more from LHS in the future.

Finally, have any of your schools produced a perfect SAT score?

The Lassiter defense is VERY vulnerable….especially to a ground game. Roswell gashed them for some big plays. Lassiter needs to get a couple of stops on downs or turnovers to get a two score advantage and when the opposing team gets out of their gameplan and tries to run and shoot with ‘em…its lights out baby. Its like they’re saying about Paul Johnson and the Tech offense…when you face it once a year and have one week to prepare its mighty difficult to stop. They are beatable but it’ll take a very good team’s ‘A ‘game to do it. Mason and the receivers are in a zone and believe they’re invincible. Their premise is to get one of their guys one-on-one with a defender and see if the defender’s basic tackling skills are any good….at the high school level that’s a pretty difficult load to put on a d-back.

ENR, you love to bash PRHS. About your comment on every good team beating peachtree ridge easily, I’d ask a NG person, or check out the stats of that game. Had PRHS not missed so many oppportunities we would’ve won that game. Same with Lowndes, we were able to hang with Lowndes for a lot of parts of the game, but we killed ourselves early with mistakes (Those 24 points in the first five minutes) and we gave up at the end of the game. I’m not saying that’s excusable and that’s something to be proud of, but the score was a bit distorted. You harass PRHS yet in 2008, PRHS and NSWR both lost to Camden and Lowndes. PRHS lost 22-7 to Lowndes compared to 24-7 to Northside. Camden beat us 21-14, as opposed to 28-20 for Northside. A 43 game winning streak at the MAC is VERY impressive, and It is a tough place for any team to play. I’m noticing that you are watching your words somewhat in not saying that northside will absolutely destroy (a blowout) PRHS, so maybe you are actually hiding some of your fear. Crap, I was hoping to go to a Wal-Mart to buy some Chinese made Lassiter/USC clothing for the game when I got within 5 miles of Marietta, but now I read that won’t happen. And,it sounds like I’ll be lucky if Lassiter High School even shows up on the GPS since they haven’t yet built their legacy in football in 2 YEARS.
I do want to arrive early because my Nephew has told me that the band IS the show! I watched them on YOU TUBE and they sound great thru my itsy-bitsy computer speakers if I lean forward over the keyboard and tell my family to mute the TV ! Upon arrival, park our car in a safe well lit area of the Lassiter lot in order to reduce the risk of car disappearance. You will know who the Illinois people are as we walk into the stadium since we can survive a 50 degree football game without a Sterno can and a army surplus snorkel parka. I can’t say the “n” word, but my “bipples” will not be hard from the 50 degree cold. We will watch the game, pray that everybody on both teams doesn’t suffer career ending injuries, hopefully get invited out with the parents and players to a sports bar, or a Waffle House to visit for a while with Jimmy and Kirk, then try to find a hotel under $100.
Some of you are asking yourselves, why does Uncle Shawn put himself thru this? Well, I would normally watch Lassiter games on gpb.org/football, but Todd’s right, the hype and storyline of this game is just to much to risk not witnessing in person. I mean, I’ve never watched MTV, I’m a 300 lb 45 yr old, Reaganite/Glenn Beck fan and even….I….have heard of the reality show that showcased Hoover High a few years back. I mean this is the Head Coach AND the offensive coordinator (now transplanted to Georgia) squaring off in the elite 8 (that’s what we call this part of a State tournament in Illinois if it was March Madness) just enjoy it if you are truly a high school sports fan. My gosh, my nephew could have put me to sleep most games this year because after all, he can’t scramble, or throw long, or improvise when needed, yep that whole Lassiter team is just LUCKY 2 years in a row. After all, those genius on the Volunteer fansite have been calling him “old noodle arm” for months. Speaking of the Volunteers, my brothers and I all grew up in the country outside Peoria, Il. Our family was raised to pick a school that had their guns in their gun racks, and not in their pants belts.
Anyway, if Lassiter wins, I guess some of you will say “lucky their opponent wasn’t Stephenson” but if it goes the other way, maybe next year Wal-Mart will put in a order for some Chinese made Lassiter fan stuff and then at least 1 of you will know Lassiter has hit the “BIGTIME” by your measure, possibly Wal-Mart could even get a special order of Lassiter themed “Snuggies” for next season. Now Donna, there is a fundraiser for the band………..

Watching Lassiter this year reminds me of watching the 1991 Braves make their magical run…hopefully Colquitt County won’t have anyone named Hrbek in the secondary. We beat then undefeated Roswell, (who gave Grayson a very tough game), for the Region Championship. The following week we were down 0-14 vs. North Forsyth before scoring 42 unanswered points – in the first half! South Gwinnett is a terrific, athletic team that also runs/and practices against a spread offense – and we were able to put up 70 by the 4th quarter. Playing Lassiter is similar to playing tennis….opponents are forced to score a touchdown in order to “hold serve” against the inevitable next Trojan touchdown. Congratulations to Colquitt County for defeating a loaded Stephenson team and advancing. We’re happy for you and looking forward to hosting a terrific high school playoff game Friday Night. Go Trojans!

LHS you seem like a great person. Both of us want our teams to win. This might actually end up being one of the best games in the state this year. We are proud of our Packers and totally believe in them. The city of Moultrie is really pulling for our young team. We were not picked to even make the playoffs and we’ve come this far. These boys are well coached and hungry to win. I haven’t seen this atmosphere in Moultrie since I graduated in 1997. I actually lived in Atlanta for 5 years after graduating. The way Coach Propst has turned this team around is incredible. What’s even more awesome for us is, we only lose 3 starters next year. I think the Pack is back. I expect a great game between two great teams Friday night. Go Pack Go!!

No high school team can stop Lassiter’s offense. They have an outstanding quarterback in Hutson Mason, and a receiving core of 8 really consistent receivers that have really impressed throughout the season. They hardly ever drop passes and also block well on the perimeter to allow wide receivers room to run on screen passes and what not. And lets face it nobody has 5 good defensive backs that can run with a receiving core with as much depth as they have for 4 quarters in a hurry-up, no huddle, 5 receiver set offense. And when teams blitz with a 5 receiver set they leave there corners on one-on-one coverage and this also leds to many mismatches and big plays, along with not being able to have a deep safety serving as a big play preventor. And as far as defense goes they make plays when they have too. They gave up 49 on Friday but it was 42-17 at halftime so the game was practically over. And when Lassiter scored quickly in the 2nd half to start off the defense didn’t really have anything to play for so it allowed some big plays, also alot of JV players say action in the 3rd and 4th quarters Friday so that also contributes to why so many points were allowed. Lassiter will win Friday vs Colquitt Co, but the real test will be the following Friday vs the winner of the North Gwinett/Camden Co game. I think North Gwinett wins a close one and will face Lassiter in a game that is too close to call.

Look. Lassiter gives up alot of points, however, most of them come during the 3rd and 4th period when we are up by 30 and have our 2nd and 3rd team in the game (on both sides of the ball). Lassiter is not 12-0 for nothing. I suggest everyone just relax a little and let’s see what happens Friday night. Does anyone remember the saying “Any Given Sunday”? No team out here is invincible. They are all good…that’s why they are in the Elite 8. How about giving a little credit where credit is due? I hope all teams play well and end the night healthy. Don’t worry, Mark. The Packers WILL shut down your offense, but Coach Propst will be merciful and not ring up 70+ points on you the way you have been doing against your fellow metro Atlanta cupcakes. The fearsome Pack defense will have have your QB so rattled, he’ll make Joe Cox look like Joe Montana! And don’t even get me started on that little Pop Warner stadium!! Shoot, my old 19″ Magnavox qualifies as a “Jumbotron” inside that little Mickey Mouse field. We’ll outnumber you 4 to 1. Don’t know where Colquitt County is??? Black and Gold, It is almost impossible for Lassiter to score 17 points. Colquitt Runs the spread, correct? Have you not seen when teams have attempted to pass the ball on LHS? Pick 6’s all day. A couple of our recievers run 4.4 40 yard dash time. I doubt all your DB’s even stand a chance on covering them. Our 1 reciever, Griffin Roelle, does not run a 4.4 but does squat 600 pounds. This allows him to get so many yards after he catches the ball because he trucks DB’s. Also, the scrimage at the start of the year doesn’t mean anything. I’m saying this because of the Lassiter-Centennial game at half time the score was 21-7, Centennial leading. Lassiter came back to win it by teo touchdowns. My projected score is 49-35

I don’t understand some of these big fancy words all of yall are usin, but readin all these comments, it looks like you Lasseter boys have got a good team this year and all, but what you got to know is that the Pack has a LONG winnin TRADITION. Including Ray Goff and lots of others. Ray was a great quarter back for my Bull Dawgs, had some great years, beat Bare Bryant one year and even played Pitsburg in the Super bowl that year. Would of won it too but the refs cheated my Bull Dawgs because of Tony Doarset and the Hyesmann trophy hype. Anyhow Ray came back and coached the Dawgs, did a good job too until those Auburn boys Dooly and Michel Adams fired him because Steve Spuriour said he was dumb. Well ol Ray was dumb like a fox because he got that fancy lawyer from Perry who made Dooly pay him like a billion dollars or something like that. Anyhow Ray is a good guy and a loyal Dawg and I dont think he had any hard feelings because a feller can make a good livin selling fried chicken and all. Which brings me to my point which is that the Packers has a tradition and expects to win just like Ray did. Thanks yall and have a fun turkey day and I hope ol Ray is there Friday night cause I think his team is goin to Win!

Hawg4Life. I’m happy your team has a winning tradition. Last I heard none of those players are playing Friday night. The Steelers were dominant in the 70’s, but I don’t hear their fans saying they should win the Superbowl every year now. There will be new traditions made this year and yet more next. Forget the past as it is not indicative of the present. If you can’t let go of the past, might I remind you of your team’s recent lack of sussess? That would be more reasonable than what you are holding on to.

Tussy,
All I have to say is that you have alot of crap to eat Friday night if Colquitt loses, which they will. Yall may have a good defense but you or nobody else has 5 defensive backs that can match up with our receivers throughout the game much less the 1st half. Plus we run a no huddle offense so you will not be able to switch up your personal as effectively as you would like too, and you will need to because your defensive backs will get tired really quickly against our offense. If yall get down 2 scores its a ballgame because we will simply trade scores with you the rest of the game. And yes, Roswell did talk more trash than Colquitt is. But the one thing that you have in common with Roswell is that nether of yall’s teams can beat us.

Hutson MAson is probably the 4th or 5th best player on this team. You Gnat Liners keep worrying about Hutson and how t ostop him. You’d better be worried about Griffin. It will take at least 2 to cover him and at least 4 to bring him down and he is just one of 5 very good players who will catch the ball.

Defense can be spotty at times but it’s high school and ALL defenses are spotty at times. HOWEVER…look out for Big, Bad Rip! That boy will take your head off and he will be patrolling the secondary. Don’t worry too much about the defense. You’d better just be able to score on offense on every single possesion or you will lose this game.

Colquit is a good team and Probst is a good coach…just watch your booster club bank account and your wives around him.

Hutson Mason is the best player on the team. There is no arguing that. Lassiter would not be 12-0 without him. He is better than Griffin Roele, who my hat is off to and has had an incredible career but none of this would be possible without Hutson Mason. This will be a good game. Lassiter on top by at least 14. I don’t believe Chip’s spread offense can be beat by CC’s D. Stephenson dominated them. Lassiter doesn’t make the same mistakes. Lassiter by 14 is a good prediction Hutson Mason is good but anyone who has seen a game knows Griffin Roelle is the best player on the team. His dad played for the Kansas City Chiefs so he comes from a football family. Yards after the catch are what makes Griffin great. I have heard he has some offers from a few major D-1 schools, Notre Dame and the Air Force Academy to name two. Mason is a product of his offense which is why no FBS school has looked at him. Love the boy to death and he is a great person and player but he is not the best player on the field.

We will probably start slow like we usually do and then Colquitt will get relaxed, then we will pour the coals to the fire and it will be on then. Lassiter by at LEAST 14.

i highly disagree with your lassiter dad. hutson mason is the best player on the team. griffin wouldnt be crap if hutson mason didnt find him open all the time. hutson sees the whole field and finds griffin when he is open. and griffin hasnt played as well as he has the past few games the entire season. so hands down hutson mason is by far the best player on the team.

Griffin is a good player but he does not have D-1 offers. He is too small to play D-1 in many schools eyes. So whoever told you he was getting recruited by Notre Dame and Air Force is lying. He is a vital part of the team but you have to be really good and atleast 6 feet tall to get considered by most D-1 schools, there are excpetions but he is not getting recruited by Notre Dame.

No matter where he goes, he will impact the football team. Look for him to play into tonight’s game more because Colquitt is physical and we are down one reciever.

Controlled both lines of scrimmage, you couldn’t even come close to stopping our run, your QB spent as much time on his back as his feet and, oh year, 5 interceptions.

“The fearsome Pack defense will have have your QB so rattled, he’ll make Joe Cox look like Joe Montana!”

And that’s exactly what happened. Come back in a few years when you’re ready to play big boy football.

Congrats to Colquitt Co! My hat is certainly off to them! They came out and almost flawlessly executed their gameplan and it led to a big win. And to answer your question, yes we are getting more stands. We are not about to drop down to 4AAAA, we actually have a quite large school. That was the most fans that any away team has brought to a home game at Lassiter this year, and yall are the farthest away! Once again, congrats my hat is off to your team, and go win state!

I’m proud of the lassiter fans on this blog. Way to be good sports! What an amazing season we had, we got our butts kicked tonight, however no one in the state thought we could even have a winnign season two years ago. This whole south Ga is better fight is senseless. If i remember correctly walton and roswell both have stat titles. And this whole silver spoon garbage? Why cant rich kids play football aswell as poor kids can? that is just stupid. Money has nothing to do with talent. And it sound like a few people on this blog are taking there economic hardships out on the more affluent teams. Good job trojans and good game Packers. Tussy I truly hope you can find it in your heart to have a little more class than you have displayed on this blog.

4 picks in the first half and you were only up by 13. CC played well but they didn’t beat us. We beat ourselves.

I think I proved my earlier point that Hutson Mason was way overrated and was not the best Trojan on the field. He had better sign a letter of intent to UAB before the see game film.

Before the game he was seperated from the rest of the team. He looked lethargic before the game, not pumped up at all. After the half, as the team was walking onto the field there was not a Trojan player within 10 feet of him. I have no idea what was going on but something was happening. He didn’t make one good pass all game long. The long pick he threw looked as if it was thrown on purpose. His running back was open all game long but he didn’t really throw the ball to him until the second half. He scrambled 15 yards out of the pocket and refused to throw the ball away. In the Red Zone he had recievers open and would quickly throw the ball away but outside of the Red Zone he took too much time and didn’t look around to his 3rd or 4th option.

I just don’t think the kid is a smart QB.

How about Rip Rowen and Griffin Roelle? They both played hard and to the ball every time.

Proud of you boys. My son is a senior next year and is already looking forward to next season.

Congrats to Colquitt County on the win and the Lassiter team for a nice season. But the State championship for self-delusional trash-talking goes to the Lassiter fans:

“No high school team can stop Lassiter’s offense”
“Lassiter will win Friday vs Colquitt Co.”
“I think North Gwinett wins”
“Colquitt scored twice on special teams when Lassiter had their 9th grade team in”
“Colquitt is screwed”
“There is no way u can stop this spread eagle offense”
“You have alot of crap to eat Friday night if Colquitt loses, which they will”
“Nobody else has 5 defensive backs that can match up with our receivers”
“Good luck blitzing us. hutson gonna make big plays all game”
“Maybe we will be nice and only put up 50 on you guys”
“CC played well but they didn’t beat us”

At least one guy got it right: “It is almost impossible for Lassiter to score 17 points.” It WAS almost impossible, but Colquitt put their scrubs in at the end of the game and let you score.

Enjoy your victory Colquitt. The ‘Cats are defending State champs for a reason. See you on the coast next Friday!

Should be an awesome game Wildcatfever. At least we have two programs who respect each other. The trash talk won’t happen. We are all excited to see these two teams battle it out. I honestly think Friday night is the true “State Championship” game.

Since the AAAAA classification started, it is South Georgia 5 and North Georgia 4. The last North Georgia team to win it was 2006 when Roswell and Peachtree Ridge tied.

3 out 4 chance the championship will be from the south. Pretty good odds consider the number of AAAAA schools that are in the metro area. The Cats and the Pack will put on a heck of a game. Wish the metro press would be there to cover it; doubt it. Anyway, I am still ROFL at ” Can Lassiter Be Stopped?” HA HA HA

ok lassiter dad. u have no idea what ur talking about. hutson mason it the best quarterback in the state. ask any of these colquitt fans. the reason he did so awful is because he had no help from his offensive line at all. he had about three seconds before he had to choose to sprint to one of the sidelines. id like to see you get out there with a florida state commit chasing after u and throw a touchdown. griffin roelle is a great athlete and player. but how dare u talk down about hutson like that. it wasnt his fault. he did the best he could. if u watched the game. he broke out of pressure numerous time and made a throw. but u cant expect him to do that every play. our front five couldnt block there front four. if u wanna argue about this ask anyone at lassiter or any of these pack fans becasue what happened friday was not hutsons fault.
