I know Camden County beat Lowndes, and I know DeKalb County laid an egg in the colors of Stephenson and SW DeKalb (not to mention ML King and Tucker and Marist).
But those need to wait until we’ve discussed what’s going on at Lassiter High in Marietta.
Is Hutson Mason ridiculous or what?
The Lassiter quarterback threw for 530 yards and eight touchdowns in Lassiter’s 70-49 victory over South Gwinnett, and Mason didn’t even play the fourth quarter. He’s got over 4,000 yards passing on the season and 54 touchdowns, both shattering state records, and he’s not finished.
Lassiter has scored at least 42 points in nine straight games. The 70 against South Gwinnett are a record in a regulation playoff game in the highest classification.
It’s not enough to ask if there’s a team that is able to stop Lassiter. The question is whether any team knows how to stop Lassiter.
Georgia is a traditionally run-oriented, hit-you-in-the-mouth football state. Chip Lindsey is from Alabama, where the no-huddle spread offense has taken hold. Rush Propst helped revolutionize Alabama football with this offense at Hoover.
Lindsey was Propst’s offensive coordinator in 2007, though he was running the spread before that. Propst is now head coach at Colquitt County, which plays Lassiter this week.
Does Propst know how to stop the monster he helped create?
The last time I’ve seen something in Georgia that changed the way we think was Brookwood’s state champion in the mid-1990s that dominated with large, powerful, weight-trained linemen. Parkview maintained that formula through the early 1990s. Recently, it’s been Wing T teams (Lowndes and Camden County) that have dominated the big class. The current No. 1 team, Grayson, is a Wing T team.
I’m convinced of this much: What Lassiter is doing not a gimmick offense. It’s a relatively novel offense in Georgia, but it’s a legitimate offense run by a quarterback who is as accurate a thrower and as well-versed in what he’s doing in this system as any player in the country.
Anybody can win Class AAAAA. There’s no sense guessing. I’d give the least chance to Colquitt County and Newnan, the two teams I’ve seen win in the playoffs, if only because they generate the kind of offense you’d expect to see in a state champion. I also question Lassiter’s defense. I’m thinking it will be one of the Gwinnett teams. North Gwinnett has the best balance of offense & defense and gets Camden at home. …
In AAAA, congratulations to Region 8-AAAAA for putting three teams in the QF. That region plays a 10-game region schedule, so there’s no way to gauge its strength until the playoffs. I still see no legitimate state contender there, but a good region.
Somebody wrote me in preseason and said that he’d email me when SW DeKalb, my No. 1 team in preseason, lost in the second round. But I think that person was a Lowndes fan, so he’ll be too humble to gloat this week.

Let me tell you this: Lassiter definitely will not score point on the Colquitt County Packer Defense like they did on those Metro Atlanta Football teams. Colquitt County will win this game…

No high school team can stop Lassiter’s offense. They have an outstanding quarterback in Hutson Mason, and a receiving core of 8 really consistent receivers that have really impressed throughout the season. They hardly ever drop passes and also block well on the perimeter to allow wide receivers room to run on screen passes and what not. And lets face it nobody has 5 good defensive backs that can run with a receiving core with as much depth as they have for 4 quarters in a hurry-up, no huddle, 5 receiver set offense. And when teams blitz with a 5 receiver set they leave there corners on one-on-one coverage and this also leds to many mismatches and big plays, along with not being able to have a deep safety serving as a big play preventor. And as far as defense goes they make plays when they have too. They gave up 49 on Friday but it was 42-17 at halftime so the game was practically over. And when Lassiter scored quickly in the 2nd half to start off the defense didn’t really have anything to play for so it allowed some big plays, also alot of JV players say action in the 3rd and 4th quarters Friday so that also contributes to why so many points were allowed. Lassiter will win Friday vs Colquitt Co, but the real test will be the following Friday vs the winner of the North Gwinett/Camden Co game. I think North Gwinett wins a close one and will face Lassiter in a game that is too close to call.

Look. Lassiter gives up alot of points, however, most of them come during the 3rd and 4th period when we are up by 30 and have our 2nd and 3rd team in the game (on both sides of the ball). Lassiter is not 12-0 for nothing. I suggest everyone just relax a little and let’s see what happens Friday night. Does anyone remember the saying “Any Given Sunday”? No team out here is invincible. They are all good…that’s why they are in the Elite 8. How about giving a little credit where credit is due? I hope all teams play well and end the night healthy. I hope Lassiter makes it to the next round as I know Colquitt made it this far for a reason too.

Damn – alot of Lassiter haters on here today. Not sure why it matters that wal marts in paulding and west cobb do not carry Lassiter merchandise – why would they?? I don’t even know where Colquitt is but from the posts I assume it is somewhere in the southern part of the state (not a compliment). You people seem to be putting way too much emphasis on a pre-season scrimmage that was called in the 3rd quarter. You will see the real Lassiter team friday – our last stop before the Georgia Dome.

Don’t worry, Mark. The Packers WILL shut down your offense, but Coach Propst will be merciful and not ring up 70+ points on you the way you have been doing against your fellow metro Atlanta cupcakes. The fearsome Pack defense will have have your QB so rattled, he’ll make Joe Cox look like Joe Montana! And don’t even get me started on that little Pop Warner stadium!! Shoot, my old 19″ Magnavox qualifies as a “Jumbotron” inside that little Mickey Mouse field. We’ll outnumber you 4 to 1. Don’t know where Colquitt County is??? Why, it’s the home of the late Ray Goff, fried chicken mogul and the finest player ever to QB or coach the mighty Red and Black!!! Now go on back to your golf or lacrosse or gymnastics or whatever else it is you play up there. Leave football to the men from Southwest Georgia.

Go about 2-3 miles, Lassiter HS is on the left. Not only is Ray Goff from Moultrie, but so is Virgil Seay, who owns a Super Bowl ring with the Redskins. (He was one of the Smurfs).

My money is on Lassiter. Has anyone seen a high school passing game like theirs? Ever? I’ve been involved with prep football for nearly 30 years, in three different states, and I’ve never seen such remarkable success in the air. Hutson Mason’s arm, along with his talented supporting cast, will take home a state championship this year.

I am more familiar with the southeastern part of the state having spent my college years in Statesboro.
I hope for your sake the colquitt county defense is as confident as their blog happy fans – something tells me your coach will not underestimate our offense as much as the fans. Looking forward to an exciting game Friday night.

Mark: You were right about the semis. They used to be at the Dome, with the finals at a home stadium. The GHSA changed after the 2007 season to have the finals at the Dome.
Tussy: The year before William Andrews & Thomasville ran all over Valdosta 42-0. Ironic how in spite of Buck Belue, UGA won a national championship, but when Buck was at Valdosta High, the Cats NEVER won state. If the Packers get it done Friday & North Gwinnett wins, then another trip to metro Atlanta awaits. Good luck to all & Happy Thanksgiving to all & safe travels for everyone.

and a student at lassiter speaking. i will give colquitts defense credit. there good. but they dont have enough guys to cover everyone. lassiter has about 8-10 consistent recievers. there is no way u can stop this spread eagle offense. u guys can either sit back and try to cover our recievers or try and rush hustson. but when rushing hutson that leaves open men and i promise u hutson will find the open guy. its really a lose lose situation for colquitt. now colquitt prob will put up some points. but if u get in a shootout with lassiter. i promise u wont win. its lights out. lassiters goin to state. see you people at the dome. Black and Gold, It is almost impossible for Lassiter to score 17 points. Colquitt Runs the spread, correct? Have you not seen when teams have attempted to pass the ball on LHS? Pick 6’s all day. A couple of our recievers run 4.4 40 yard dash time. I doubt all your DB’s even stand a chance on covering them. Our 1 reciever, Griffin Roelle, does not run a 4.4 but does squat 600 pounds. This allows him to get so many yards after he catches the ball because he trucks DB’s. Also, the scrimage at the start of the year doesn’t mean anything. I’m saying this because of the Lassiter-Centennial game at half time the score was 21-7, Centennial leading. Lassiter came back to win it by teo touchdowns. My projected score is 49-35

I don’t understand some of these big fancy words all of yall are usin, but readin all these comments, it looks like you Lasseter boys have got a good team this year and all, but what you got to know is that the Pack has a LONG winnin TRADITION. Including Ray Goff and lots of others. Ray was a great quarter back for my Bull Dawgs, had some great years, beat Bare Bryant one year and even played Pitsburg in the Super bowl that year. Would of won it too but the refs cheated my Bull Dawgs because of Tony Doarset and the Hyesmann trophy hype. Anyhow Ray came back and coached the Dawgs, did a good job too until those Auburn boys Dooly and Michel Adams fired him because Steve Spuriour said he was dumb. Well ol Ray was dumb like a fox because he got that fancy lawyer from Perry who made Dooly pay him like a billion dollars or something like that. Anyhow Ray is a good guy and a loyal Dawg and I dont think he had any hard feelings because a feller can make a good livin selling fried chicken and all. Which brings me to my point which is that the Packers has a tradition and expects to win just like Ray did. Thanks yall and have a fun turkey day and I hope ol Ray is there Friday night cause I think his team is goin to Win!

Hawg4Life. I’m happy your team has a winning tradition. Last I heard none of those players are playing Friday night. The Steelers were dominant in the 70’s, but I don’t hear their fans saying they should win the Superbowl every year now. There will be new traditions made this year and yet more next. Forget the past as it is not indicative of the present. If you can’t let go of the past, might I remind you of your team’s recent lack of sussess? That would be more reasonable than what you are holding on to.

Congratulations to Lassiter Trojans on winning our very first Region Championship this year! To be quite honest, I’m glad we don’t play down south in Region I-AAAAA with the likes of Lowndes, Valdosta, Warner Robbins, Northside, Colquitt or even Tift County. Unfortunately most of their women golf teams could beat our football Trojans. Dusty always said: “Son…Trojans are for gas station bathrooms not the football field”. Fill the Frank! Tussy,
All I have to say is that you have alot of crap to eat Friday night if Colquitt loses, which they will. Yall may have a good defense but you or nobody else has 5 defensive backs that can match up with our receivers throughout the game much less the 1st half. Plus we run a no huddle offense so you will not be able to switch up your personal as effectively as you would like too, and you will need to because your defensive backs will get tired really quickly against our offense. If yall get down 2 scores its a ballgame because we will simply trade scores with you the rest of the game. And yes, Roswell did talk more trash than Colquitt is. But the one thing that you have in common with Roswell is that nether of yall’s teams can beat us.

Hutson MAson is probably the 4th or 5th best player on this team. You Gnat Liners keep worrying about Hutson and how t ostop him. You’d better be worried about Griffin. It will take at least 2 to cover him and at least 4 to bring him down and he is just one of 5 very good players who will catch the ball.
Defense can be spotty at times but it’s high school and ALL defenses are spotty at times. HOWEVER…look out for Big, Bad Rip! That boy will take your head off and he will be patrolling the secondary. Don’t worry too much about the defense. You’d better just be able to score on offense on every single possesion or you will lose this game.
Colquit is a good team and Probst is a good coach…just watch your booster club bank account and your wives around him.

With all do respect to Mason Hudson who im sure is a fine player, our boys should be able to brush yall aside without any problems. I hear what yall are sayin about coach Rush and we do lock up the wimmin and children but he has a great great football mine and knows how to stop a team that runs his own ofense. Hutson Mason is the best player on the team. There is no arguing that. Lassiter would not be 12-0 without him. He is better than Griffin Roele, who my hat is off to and has had an incredible career but none of this would be possible without Hutson Mason. And Marcus Stokes #34 and Rip Rowan #43 are also really good but Hutson is still better, just take a look at the stats. 55 td’s and only 5 int’s this year! And over 4,000 yards passing!

Lassiter by 14 is a good prediction Hutson Mason is good but anyone who has seen a game knows Griffin Roelle is the best player on the team. His dad played for the Kansas City Chiefs so he comes from a football family. Yards after the catch are what makes Griffin great. I have heard he has some offers from a few major D-1 schools, Notre Dame and the Air Force Academy to name two. Mason is a product of his offense which is why no FBS school has looked at him. Love the boy to death and he is a great person and player but he is not the best player on the field.
We will probably start slow like we usually do and then Colquitt will get relaxed, then we will pour the coals to the fire and it will be on then. Lassiter by at LEAST 14.

Griffin is a good player but he does not have D-1 offers. He is too small to play D-1 in many schools eyes. So whoever told you he was getting recruited by Notre Dame and Air Force is lying. He is a vital part of the team but you have to be really good and atleast 6 feet tall to get considered by most D-1 schools, there are excpetions but he is not getting recruited by Notre Dame.
