I have no idea whether Proud Wolverine will be back, but a couple of his points need to be addressed either way.
There were several points during the game where BOTH bands played during a play. It became very obvious because the North announcer pointed it out and asked the bands to stop; they BOTH continued to do it anyhow in violation of GHSA rules. I believe that BOTH schools should be fined for this blatant disregard for Georgia rules, especially after it was pointed out.
I gave some thought to why it kept happening, and I think the problem is that North sometimes runs a “hurry up” offense. This does not give the band sufficient time to complete their piece before the next play starts. All bands have prepared pieces designed to take an appropriate amount of time between plays. Teams that shorten the time between snaps create a problem for bands. Most drum majors/conductors have their backs to the field and bands should have a second individual to warn the conductor to “cut” the piece if a play is about to occur. While Woodstock did this repeatedly during North plays, both bands did it during Woodstock plays when Woodstock ran a “hurry up” late in the game. The Woodstock band actually played during the offensive plays of their own team. Fining the schools will put a stop to it.
It is funny how we remember the game differently. I remember thinking there were some late hits during the game by Woodstock that should have been flagged. Both defenses played very aggressively, and I guess the refs allowed a bit of leeway. One late hit was flagged against North that I thought was a legitimate rush of the QB. The defender actually got a piece of the ball and continued his motion with less than a full step. The most blatant example was a run by North where the runner was stopped by Woodstock, the whistle was blown, and a Woodstock defender hit the runner from behind in a helmet to back of the helmet blindside hit that rang through the stadium. The human skull is thickest on the forehead and also thick on the sides. It is thinnest in the back over the occipital lobe of the brain. A blow to the back of the head is not just rude or unsportsmanlike, it is outright dangerous. Even light blows to the back of the head can cause hematomas, vision problems, paralysis or death. To my knowledge combat sports like boxing always outlaw blows to the back of the head precisely because of the extreme damage that can occur. I would like it if GHSA reviewed the film, and that hit in particular, and took appropriate action against the perpetrator.
As a former player I understand Woodstock’s frustration about not being able to score as the clock ticked away. You have a great team with awesome players who certainly expected a different outcome. I am sure your players and fans wanted at least some points on the board to show they made a game of it. But that does not justify the sort of aggressive play by Woodstock players that seemed designed to physically hurt your opponents with no chance of affecting the outcome of the game.
It just was not in the cards for Woodstock to win this game. That seemed obvious to me when a D Lineman ran back a fumble by your QB for a 92 yard touchdown. Hopefully the two teams will meet again some day. Hopefully there will not be residual “Bad Blood” because a very solid Woodstock team was beaten so decisively by North in 2009

I thought about this for a while before making this post. After reading a post from someone that played North Gwinnett this past Friday night, I think that I need to make mention that anyone playing N. Gwinnett at their home field should get ready for it. N. Gwinett folks are rude and don’t seem to really care about their visitors. When P’Ridge played them a couple of weeks ago one of the boards in the bleachers broke and one of our colorguard girls and a parent fell through at the same time. We had to ask the N. Gwinnett folks three times before someone even came to mark the spot. NONE of the N. Gwinnett folks asked if we needed help. I would like to say the police that were there did offer assistance. Our colorguard girl ended up going to the Emergency room for stitches. Even as we walked her out to her dad’s car N. Gwinnett folks wouldn’t even move out of our way. That was only one of the incidents that we encountered. I know that the venue is small but it would help if they kept their students on their side of the field.
I didn’t want anyone to think that I was just doing this because we lost. Anyone who visits there needs to be warned not to expect a gracious host. I know I dread it when we have to go there to play them. Typically I am with the band and even the adults that are there are rude to our band. I have no idea how the football team is treated. I do know that in the past their kids have tried to start fights with our band kids.
I really hope they prove me wrong this coming Friday and show how good of a host they can be.

Suwanee Ownz-earlier this week i tried to tell numerous Woodstock fans that North Gwinnett had too much talent for their Wolverines to overcome but they just wrote me off. Woodstock is a team that has overachieved this season, partly due to great coaching…but great coaching can only take a team so far.

Ridge Mom, One of society’s problems is making blanket ignorant statements i.e all people from the south are stupid, all people from north are rude, all black people are lazy all white people are racists. See how ignorant that sounds. There was around 8 thousand people there and to make a statement like that based on an experience with few. I find it just the opposite. For example its the only place where the announcer says c’mon Peachtree Ridge fans stand up and cheer for your lions. or C,mon Woodstock fans stand up and cheer for our wolverines or whoever it is at least 4 or 5 times a game. Another thing he says is give your lions a hand they fought hard today. Always complimenting or acknowledging visiting team. Secondly, there are parents stationed through out the stadium specifically to help visiting fans with anything they need. Its part of our duties as a freshman parents .Be careful making blanket statements on whatever you are commenting on.

Sorry if you had issues, Ridge Mom. I am very surprised that emergency personnel were not responsive. Fire and Police personnel at that game belong to the city of Suwanee and I hardly think they would be unresponsive to their own citizens. Perhaps with all of the commotion of a game, nobody was aware that there was an issue. I certainly was not aware of any issues like that, but I was paying attention to the game. There should have been police and emergency personnel readily available; maybe they were also interested in the game?
I was trying to think where there might even be “boards” in the stands. The visitor stands are the old home stand for North. I believe they are solid steel and quite ample. Much better than the typical visitor stand one finds in Gwinnett County at a school like, say, Peachtree Ridge. I guess it must have been one of the “side stands” where visiting teams usually chose to place their band, but I still was not aware there were boards in the “little” stand. Our band always occupied the main stands along with students when we were on that side.
If you ever have any sort of discipline problems look for the HUGE Vice Principal. I believe he is 6′ 10″ and has a booming voice that can be heard all over the stadium. He stands out. There is not a single student at North who does not wilt at a mere gaze from this fellow.
I hope your color guard girl is recovering well. Happy Thanksgiving and good luck in your game at NSWR. I truly would like to see the Lions do well. Sorry you cannot win division 7AAAAA every year. Sometimes a fluke like that just happens.
I will say that the parking situation at North is not very good. My family walks to games both for the exercise and to avoid the congestion.

Reflection… Woodstock VS NG. Everyone sees and hears things differently.
Bottom line is Woodstock offense did not show up Friday night. Defense played solid holding NG to 170 offensive yards.
NG quarteback? Is he still hurt ? to ME he did not look like a divison 1 prospect. He lumbered around the entire evening fumbling twice and did not look impressive except for a few plays.
The 2 fumbles killed Woodstock.
The refs were terrible. If anyone has video/audio of the game you will see/hear one of the refs blowing the whistle and calling the play dead on the 92 yard fumble recovery. This same ref could not make the call on a pass to the sidelines that was clearly out of bounds.Another ref stepped in to call it.
The refs control the game and field conditions. It was their responsibility to keep both bands quiet and they failed to do that until late in the 4th quarter.
No excuses Woodstock got beat by the better team Friday but NG does not look like a number 2 ranked team.
Good luck to both NG and Camden next week. Hope they televise this one.

Found a very interesting piece for all those whose schools may be playing up in the new reclassification..This is a snipped of an article found at http://www.macon.com/176/story/925859.html
Reclassification fun
With the deadline quickly approaching, only one school has filed the necessary paperwork with the GHSA to play up in classification.
Albany’s Dougherty has declared its intentions to play up from Class AA to AAA.
Im not sure when the deadline is, but teams better get on the ball unless they are satisfied with their future classes!!!

Nomo, congrats to the Grayson rams on an outstanding win over roswell. Grayson was very physical and I felt that the roswell defense really held its own for most of the game. With the score 7-7 at the half, it looked like my upset prediction was going to happen based on good special teams play be roswell. However, I had no idea that we would fumble the 2nd half opening kickoff and give grayson a short field of about 30 yards; then after a defensive stand by Grayson the roswell special teams allowed a punt return (untouched) to go up 2 td’s. After that the Grayson defensive line establshed its physicality. Great running game. Hard to believe that Grayson held the ball almost 7 minutes in the 4th quarter on 1 drive with its power running game ! I have never seen a more impressive 3rd & short power run. Too bad the roswell kid fumbled the 2nd half kickoff; would have been fun to see what would have happened without the roswell 2nd half mental mistakes. Congrats on the win….good luck in the next round.

SWD Player.
I do understand what you’re saying especially regarding media attention. Its very true that their is some great talent at other schools outside of DeKalb County that doesn’t get the media attention because of the media not really paying attention or actually going to some of the games that these athletes play in. I know of a coach that use to work for one of the more powerful schools in DeKalb said that the talent level isn’t that much more superior, but media hype and the ‘tradition’ of getting kids scholarships made it such that these kids were looked upon as ‘tremendously great’. For the record, the talent is out there at EVERY school…….whether if its the media, coaches, or fans getting their guys names out there or not.
Congrats to all the teams still in the playoffs…..you’ve worked hard and earned everything that you deserve!!! Maybe the media will look more closely at the remaing teams and give their players the attention and print that they deserve!!!

Very true Rige Mom. The NG people are bad at keeping their kids on the home side. Some went over to the visitor side during the Peachtreee Ridge game and tried to pick fights with our kids. They had to be told to leave by P ridge administration. They are a good school they just lack when it comes to sportsmanship and Class.

Its amazing to me the comments that many of you say about SWD coaches or whatever. Ken Malcolme left the game with a broken collarbone, two players dropped touchdown passes.. clarke central simply made a play or two more. I guess its Buck’s fault that he didnt give the kid enough calcium so his bone broke, or he didnt give the guy some stickem so they would catch it ? You all are just some ignorant people who know nothing and probably grew up with no friends

Pridge and Pridgemom and Woodstock, i am sorry that yall lost and that may play a role in why you were so unhappy with NG. you complain about students being rude, what do you think your students do? wish us the best of luck? NO! c,mon do you really expect a bunch of high school students to act correctly and treat a rival school with a bunch of respect? it just not gonna happen. its really too bad too because both schools are very good schools but im tellin ya a bunch of kids with their friends are gonna get rowdy no matter what side they are on.

Blue & gold pride,
Yes, right now Region 8-AAAA has alot to be proud of, BUT all 3 teams have some tough games in front of them and they can easily go 0-3 in this round. If Clarke Central and Rockdale both win their next game, they will face each other again (Rockdale defeated CC earlier in the season in OT). The Chee has a HUGE game ahead of them. It will be interesting to see if all 3 win…..

Stephenson High School Administration..PLEASE do us the BIGGEST FAVOR..get rid of RON GARTRELL.He is NOT WHAT WE NEED at Stephenson. Once again..the team under achieves! How long are WE..the stephenson community going to put up with this..and I really feel for these kids because THIS YEAR’S TEAM like a few others WAS a CHAMPIONSHIP caliber team..there’s no reason why the jags should not have gone to the DOME! You could see the look of dissapointment in these kids faces..I FEEL FOR THEM..THIS WAS THEIR YEAR GARTRELL..It was time to show and prove and once again we got OUT COACHED when it counted! Stephenson..FIRE GARTRELL NOW!..And let’s get a new coach in here and take this program to where Stephenson should be..NUMBER 1!

I have to agree with your comments. Roswell’s defense played Really well. I don’t know exactly how many yards Grayson had in each game but i believe Roswells D was a little better than Warner Robins, and Warner Robins was really good on D.

roswellfan, I know that fumbe was a shocker – just as the defllected pass/TD was to us. At this time of the year every play moves from *important* to *critical* and little things tend to be magnified. Your guys were awesome – one of the scrappiest bunches I’ve seen in several years, and they displayed great sportsmanship. We do count ourselves fortunate, and I really feel for your seniors – they had a great season. I am very impressed with Coach Barker, and am sure you guys are now back to the glory days of Roswell football.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes Ken Malcome did leave after the first half he had like 77 on less than 10 carries. SO IM NOT GOING TO EVEN EXPLAIN WHAT THE END RESULTS WOULD HAVE BEEN. We had no running game without him so it was just like the MLK game but only this time we were without a qb because he got a first down and jumped for extra yards causing him to fall hard. The refs called an injury timeout and he had to come out for one play. when our backup QB threw the pick 6 that put the game out of reach. We still fought back with 23 seconds remaining and drove the ball down to the 20 yd line scored and brought the game within 2 we jsut couldnt recover the onside. So it was a horrible end to a great season it wasn’t the coaching it was just a mix of bad happenings. But I congratulate Clarke Central on their win they capitalized on our adversity but I doubt they will win the AAAA title. Thomas County Central will win it all.

Pridge has a very solid defense. if they can stop the big plays then they will be fine. you can get em through the air. but there arent many teams that are very good at passing at the high school level. they have a big oline and run the triple option but if you have a good dline you should be able to push them around. the starting qb was injured after the NG game but he may be better? i think the score will be something like 17-10 PTR

Ok every year in the playoffs i come on here and all everyone does is doubt camden county. Last year everyone picked againsts them and i am starting to see the same. Please remember that we are the defending state champs and we should be favored every game until we lose. What do you have to do to get respect around this state. We lost 2 very close games this year. One to grayson (the so called unbeatable team this year by only 4 points). And another one to hoover on a last second field goal. Like i said before we are the still the champs!
