I was in the stands at the Apalachee-Marist game (I am an unbiased fan who really wanted to see Marist’s storied football program in action.) While they have an incredible team and could have won the game, Apalachee had some gutsy calls that shocked everyone. But during the game, I was surprised by the lack of dignity shown by the Marist coaching staff. The Marist head coach had to be restrained by one of his assistants as he wandered towards the Apalachee sideline to exchange words with the Apalachee coach. When Marist had an impressive drive to score, a Marist coach taunted the home crowd (I was seated on the Marist sideline, and their fans were well-informed and friendly.) I have a great deal of respect for one of the most successful football programs in Georgia, and was incredibly impressed with the discipline and ability of the players. But the above-mentioned examples by the Marist head coach and one of his assistants left a bitter taste in the mouths of some of the fans with whom I was seated. Chadwick is a superb coach and well-respected individual, but his behavior (and the behavior he tolerated from his assistant) was an embarrassment to Marist.

Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.) at Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.)
Two of the better offensive teams in the AAAAA playoffs clash when Lowndes and Camden County meet in the second round of the Georgia state playoffs. Lowndes averaged 45 points per game while the Wildcats are a shade behind at 44. Camden County began the season as one of the state’s top-ranked teams, but losses to Grayson and Hoover in the first three weeks dropped the Wildcats from the upper ranks. All Camden County has done since then is pummel opponents, scoring over 50 points on five occasions.
Lowndes, meanwhile, was riding high but lost a 10-7 game to Northside in midseason. The Vikings have been on a roll ever since thanks to the running trio of Khary Franklin, Troy Braswell and Robert Anderson. Franklin leads the team with 943 yards and 13 touchdowns while Braswell has gained 810 yards with 12 scores and Anderson has 821 yards with nine touchdowns.
Mitch Stephens: Lowndes 34, Camden County 21
Steve Spiewak: Lowndes 21, Camden County 10
Kevin Askeland: Lowndes 43, Camden County 21
MaxPreps Projection: Lowndes 42, Camden County 17

The scores are posted on this same site if you need to know who won a game from yesterday.
Nice caps. It makes people nervous as they stare at their computer screens. Especially the “What? What?” part. That adds a wonderful emphasis to your epic post.

Congratulations to Rockdale Co. Bulldogs, you men earned your quarterfinal game against Westside, Macon, good luck to you guys. Now for my Hiram boys, congratulations on a very good season, you have nothing to be ashamed of, or hang your heads for, so keep your chins up. To Mario, Dylan, Leyton, Scott, Viondi and all of the other seniors on Hiram’s team this year: Thank you for giving 100% all season, and giving us all a reason to cheer our hearts out for you. You guys accomplished a lot of firsts this season: First undefeated regular season, first Region championship, and first playoff win in SCHOOL HISTORY!! Those feats can never be claimed by anyone else at Hiram. Good luck to all you seniors in your future evdeavors.
Now to all of you 3AAA people who thought it was the toughest region in AAA. Where are your teams now? Sitting at home WATCHING the rest of the playoffs now, while 7AAA and 1AAA still have 2 teams left in the Quarterfinals. Next up for Gainesville (the soon to be 2009 AAA state champs), Cairo. It should be Gainesvilles’ toughest test to date, but I’m afraid that it will be the end of the road for the Syrupmakers. As for Flowery Branch, CC needs to be very careful not to look ahead to the matchup against Gainesville in 2 weeks, or FB my give them a big surprise. Connor Shaw can, and will, put this team onhis back and will them to victory. Good job from 7AAA, you’ve done your region proud. One more thought for CC fans, how bad do you think that FB would like to have another shot at Gainesville? Just saying.

Congrats on the win!! I for one am very glad that the game is in the swamp because coach Mac rarely ever wins a coin toss. We left the game last night working out the details of who would ride with whom. One things for sure an all south dome game is going to upset a lot of northies, but it will be a great one. With it on turff and those two offenses on the field together it should be a really good show. Good luck to Fitzgerald! Let’s go Indians!!!!

Gartrell needs to go! When will the administration fire this guy! We’ve tried and tried and tried and TRIED coach gartrell’s way and it’s NOT WORKING! These kid’s deserve more..although there were some costly turnovers by the players, they played well enough to win. Gartrell why did you kick an extra point when you SHOULD HAVE WENT FOR TWO! The extra point does nothing for you. AND WHY did you keep kicking the durn ball to their playmaker (#4) who made you pay for it just about everytime he touched the ball. With all that speed I thought we were too conservative on offense. And even Ray Charles could see you should have kept their D spread out. When Gartrell goes into the playoffs,he plays not to lose instead of being aggressive and playing to win! Look at Colquitt..they were on the road and their coaches had a game plan and strategy to win! They simply out coached us and we lost AGAIN! Stephenson..how long do we tolerate this. We are NOT a program where it’s hard to find or get talent. Every year Gartrell is blessed with GREAT talent and we UNDER ACHIEVE!! I’m tired of the weak excuses,it’s time to find a TOP QUALITY coach that van get these kids what they deserve..A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP! I’m not here to bash coach gartrell but this is the truth and enough is enough!! Stephenson High School, please make a coaching change for the benefit of our KIDS and program. As long as Gartrell is at the helm, we will never achieve true greatness. Also..i know the band supports the football team at the games and sometimes they have their own agenda..but it’s the PLAYOFFS! Stephenson High Marching Jaguars..We needed you there last night!

First off…….Way to go North Gwinnett!!!!!!!! Talk about making an old NGHS Alum proud. I think someone wrote on here that NG won the toss, so they get home field? If so, I will definately be there. Will be my first game at North for 20+ years, after living too durn far out to make any games.
I also want to congratulate Hiram for an outstanding season. I was living in Hiram when they built the new school, it’s nice to see them do so well.
My picks for round 3:
Northside v Peachtree Ridge Pulling for Northside, but should be good
Grayson v Newnan Going with Newnan on this one, but Grayson is going to put up a fight
North Gwinnett v Camden County Should be a good battle, but I’m going with NG
Colquitt County v Lassiter If Colquitt can shut down Lassiters QB, they should be able to win, if not, it Lassiter all the way.
In other levels….
Gainesville v Cairo Don’t know much about Cairo, but Gainesville has been strong this year. Thinking G’ville will pull this one out.
Buford v Cook Going to pull for Buford in this one.
Calhoun v Jefferson Co Pulling for Calhoun, mainly cause I’d like to see them play Lovett
Lovett v Charlton Co Would like to see Charlton pull this one out, but I think Lovett will win
Fitzgerald v Callaway Should be a good game, pulling for Fitzgerald in this one.

OK Old NG Dawg you may think you know a thing or two about football but you don’t know jack about Charlton. First off we rarely loose in the swamp so it for darn sure won’t be a cake walk for Lovett. Second how many teams have put up 46 on Brooks County for the last 2yrs? None!!! And that’s with scores called back! So if you think were just going lay down for Lovett you need to rethink. We are not afraid of you snotty northies down here.. Not even a little. Go Charlton!!! Let’t get it done in the Swamp Friday night!!!

What I was talking about was the fact that for Griffin people who were saying I told u so that it could easily be you next week so lets not get the finger pointing. But at that point I was done addressing Griffin. The last part was about or so called (SWD) fans who were never hardcore supporters and were were just hitching a ride on the bandwagon. I was identifying with them that if they were more informed they would know that the teams from other towns coming to beat us are predominantly black just like us. So the fact that people always say we have athletes and no coaching is not always true because other teams outside of Dekalb County have athletes they just aren’t talked about because of the lack of exposure due to their proximity to the metropolitan area. My main motive was to EXPRESS DON’T BASH THE COACHING BECAUSE IT IS DISRESPECTFUL from anyone who calls them self a fan. Buck Godfrey has 2 state titles to his name despite the year or whatever so he has done something right. The main issue in Dekalb is loyalty whether its from the school board to the programs or the fans to the teams it all has to change. We have way too many schools to truly develop a powerhouse so we do the best we can with what we have thats what a coach does and if adversity holds you back from your goal you pick it up and try again. In Dekalb loyalty from player to coach is not a state championship its getting a scholarship

Hey SWD player,
Blah, Blah, Blah. As a former player I understand everything you said. However, this is not tennis or cross country where effort means a lot. This is football. The part that makes “fair weather fans” like myself angry is that we pay to see D1 athletes execute and win. Thats why we come to the games. Region champs this, highly recruited athletes that. Yet you exit in the second round. It does not compute.
Like the coach from Tucker said, do not give us too much credit until we earn it. This AFTER he won a state title. Stephenson, MLK and SWD LOVE the attention and the hype. There are tons of feature stories on South Dekalb teams that they can easily TURN down. Yet when you don’t live up to the hype we are fair weather fans. Thanks.

Any respect for the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets. Guess all we can do is win like we have been doing ever since after week 1. HEY SWD PLAYER,
Well said. I thought SWD was so loaded this year that they would win in spite of Coach Godfrey, not because of him. For all their hype, the schools you mentioned underperform. There’s no other term for it. Like my handle plainly states, “this is why they play the games”.

Hey Vikings fans. MOVE THE CHAINS THAT’S A WIN FOR CAMDEN. I root for anyone in Region 1AAAAA other than Lowndes. The actions of the entire organization from fans to the PA announcer at Martin Stadium are tacky and classless. When you win you win with class. When you lose you do the same thing. Hopefully you all will adopt the practice of the rest of your region and stop embarrassing us all by acting like a bunch of idiots. Go Packers and Go Northside Eagles. Represent Region 1AAAAA with some class.

inthatrenches, I will give you some objective views of NG. Their offense is Huge. The 2 tackles 6′4″ 300(Alabama) the other one is 6′7″ 315(Tenn). The two guards are 250, 290, and center is 6′4″ 260. The QB is 6′5″ 225. But heres the deal if you pressure him, He’ll force it or over/underthrow. Walk up corners and play man and Blitz. They run the read option where the QB will pull it and run. Hes very hard to bring down because of stiff arm and size. The wideout is fast as hell and hard to contain. They are slow to get momentum so shut em down fast and early.
As far as defense they are fast as hell and close as quickly as Ive seen in years. The weakness is one corner is 5′6″-5′7″ Hes tough but put a big receiver on him and its tough for him to cover. They run a 3-5 with blitzing a LB(s) from any spot which cause confusion but run off tackle with leads and powers and they have a hard time with that . The downside is they have the outside LB’s split the slot which allows the slot to run free to run any short to intermediate routes. But they are very hard to run outside on.They are well coached and disciplined.

GO PACK GO….we will consider the source of the advice given.
You know the part about not acting (or maybe in this case writing) something about idiots.
We have been accused of having teenagers act out (once) but we didn’t hire a head coach (you know your leader) who acts out from what I understand….regularly.
So again, we will consider the source of the one giving the advice.
Okay…..consider it now considered.
Congrats on your win over Stephenson. Still doesn’t change 31-6 at your house. Seems Lowndes has a hard time winning on the road, except in Moultrie. Bet you hate us even more now…….huh!

I hope you are not stating that Colquitt County does not know what its like at the top. Do you remember the 70s and the early to mid 90s. war eagle packer: Colquitt County (Moultrie) at the top in the 70’s? I will give you the early to mid 90’s with Jim Hughes, but I don’t remember Moultrie being at the top. I know Thomasville with William Andrews won back to back in 73 & 74, Central Macon won in 75, Warner Robins in 76, Clarke Central in 77 (beating Valdosta) & 79 (beating Tift County, with Ken Hobby), Valdosta sharing a state title in 78 with Griffin as well as winning in 70 & 71 and in 72 an Atlanta school won state.
Where was Moultrie a top team? I know you won state in 1994, but how about winning more than one state title.
