Richmond Academy at Thomas Co. Central
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jackets’ Nest, Thomasville
Records, rankings: Richmond Academy is 8-3, the No. 2 seed from Region 3-AAAA and unranked; Thomas County Central is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 1-AAAA and ranked No. 5.
Last meeting: Thomas County Central won 35-14 in the 1993 first round.
Three things to know:
1. Thomas Central prefers to run, but Eric Dodson threw for 188 yards in last week’s 15-8 victory over Alcovy.
2. Richmond Academy has its most victories in a season since 1987 and its first state-playoff win since 1970.
3. Mar-Qon Medlock, who has missed time this season while injured, threw for more than 200 yards in last week’s come-from-behind victory over Glynn Academy.
Winner plays: Tucker-Sandy Creek winner
Tucker at Sandy Creek
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, The Battlefield, Tyrone
Records, rankings: Tucker is 9-2, the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AAAA and ranked No. 10; Sandy Creek is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 5-AAAA and ranked No. 3.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Tucker is the defending champion in AAAA.
2. Rajion Neal, who has committed to Mississippi State, is a 1,000-yard rusher and the top running back on his half of the AAAA draw.
3. Sandy Creek has won 10 games for the fourth time in seven seasons but has never advanced past the second round in four tries.
Winner plays: Richmond Academy-Thomas County Central winner
Ware County at Griffin
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Griffin
Records, rankings: Ware County is 6-5, the No. 2 seed from Region 2-AAAA and unraked; Griffin is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 4-AAAA and ranked No. 1.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Griffin runs what coach Steven Devoursney calls a spread wing hybrid offense that averages 7.0 yards per play. Quarterback Marcus Waller has thrown for nearly 1,200 yards and rushed for 600 yards.
2. Ware County’s coach is Ed Dudley, who led Walton of Cobb County to a Region 6-AAAAA title last season.
3. The last time that Griffin was 11-0 was 2006, but the Bears were seeded second to Northside, which also was 11-0. That put Griffin on the road in the second round, and the Bears lost 20-0 to Creekside, which was led by Eric Berry, now an All-America safety at Tennessee.
Winner plays: Marist-Apalachee winner
Marist at Apalachee
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, R. Harold Harrison Stadium, Winder
Records, rankings: Marist is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAAA and ranked No. 7; Apalachee is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 8-AAAAA and ranked No. 6.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Marist has won 27 consecutive home playoff games but lost six of eight road (non-neutral) playoff games this decade.
2. Apalachee is called the “Cardiac Cats” on its football Web site. The team has won two overtime games and another game by one point.
3. Both are running teams with a feature back that’s closing in on 1,000 yards. For Marist, which runs the wishbone, it’s Matt Connors. For Apalachee, which runs a Wing-T, it’s Jon Lee.
Winner plays: Ware County-Griffin winner
Rockdale County at Hiram
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Hiram Stadium, Hiram
Records, rankings: Rockdale County is 8-3, the No. 3 seed from Region 8-AAAA and unranked; Hiram is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 7-AAAA and ranked No. 4.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Hiram is in the second round of the playoffs for the first time in the program’s 10-year history. The Hornets lost in the first round in their previous three playoff appearances.
2. Rockdale County is one of the hottest teams in Class AAAA, winning seven consecutive games after a 1-3 start.
3. Hiram’s offense is led by Charlie Sashington, who rushed for 121 yards in the Hornets’ subregion-clinching victory against Sprayberry and 143 yards in the region championship game against Dalton. He was injured in the playoff victory against Chamblee but is expected to play.
Winner plays: Westside, Macon-Lakeside, Evans winner
Westside, Macon at Lakeside, Evans
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Panther Stadium, Evans
Records, rankings: Westside is 10-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 1-AAAA and ranked No. 8; Lakeside is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 3-AAAA and unranked.
Last meeting: Lakeside won 26-15 in 1999.
Three things to know:
1. Lakeside, which started its program in 1998, is making its fourth appearance in the state playoffs and its first since 2000. The Panthers had never won a state playoff game until beating Statesboro last week.
2. Lakeside has one of the state’s best defenses, giving up just 3.5 points per game. The Panthers have seven shutouts, including four in a row.
3. Lakeside’s victory in the teams’ last meeting, 26-15 in 1999, cost Westside a playoff berth, but the Seminoles responded with four consecutive 10-win seasons.
Winner plays: Rockdale County-Hiram winner
Clarke Central at Southwest DeKalb
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Panthersville Stadium, Decatur
Records, rankings: Clarke Central is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAA and unranked; Southwest DeKalb is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 6-AAAA and ranked No. 2.
Last meeting: Southwest DeKalb won 44-21 in the 1995 quarterfinals.
Three things to know:
1. These teams met five times in the quarterfinals or semifinals from 1977-1995, but they haven’t played each other in 14 years. Clarke Central, which is in the second round for the first time since 1997, leads the series 5-2.
2. Southwest DeKalb is allowing just 7.4 points per game and has given up a touchdown or less in eight of its 11 games.
3. Clarke Central allows 15.1 points per game. The 28 points scored by Mays last week were the most the Gladiators have given up in a game this season.
Winner plays: North Clayton-Brunswick winner
North Clayton at Brunswick
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Glynn County Stadium, Brunswick
Records, rankings: North Clayton is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 4-AAAA and ranked No. 9; Brunswick is 8-3, the No. 1 seed from Region 2-AAAA and unranked.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. North Clayton is led by running back Clarence Jackson, who has rushed for 1,678 yards this season, including 143 in the Eagles’ victory against Bainbridge last week.
2. Brunswick is trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1999, when it reached the championship game and lost to Lowndes 17-0.
3. North Clayton has reached the quarterfinals just once since 1963. The Eagles lost to Carrollton 35-21 in the 1997 quarters.
Winner plays: Clarke Central-Southwest DeKalb winner

Idk if u read what i wrote earlier.. THERE IS NO WAY SWD WILL LOSE THIS GAME TO CC. No way after giving up a 21-7 lead to Mays team that is loaded with freshman and sophomores. u still won the game 28-31 (congrats on that) but if u barely got by us, then there is no freaking way that u will get past SWD.

Rockdale vs Hiram: Rockdale has more speed than people realize and they’re fast defensively. It will be no upset if Rockdale wins. I think its going to come down to turnovers and specialty team play in this game. Tavarus Williams could be the ‘X-Factor’ guy in this game……

I just want to give a shout out to my boyz at North Clayton for their win over Brunswick 21-12. Let’s acknowledge a N. GA team went down to Brunswick got it done in South Ga. I hate that SWD lost because I wanted to see North Clayton be the team to wip up on SWD. I just sat back and read all of those SWD fans brag on how their region was the SEC. Whatever. Now we must turn our attention to the 3rd round game against Clarke Central. Don’t know now who will get home field between N. Clayton and Clarke Central because both are #2 seeds from their regions. I hope we get to see them eagles win this one on the SOUTHSIDE next friday.

Haiku-575 …well put.
Sorry about the results SWD. I feel for your players but not for a lot of your fans who thought they were the best thing since face masks. I am really interested in reading what the EXCUSES will be this time???? Lets see, can’t use the weather excuse….probably the refs…or maybe the coaching was the reason….oh wait…Clarke Central has more Caucasian players ..maybe you can pull THAT card??? I’m sure the ones who have the GUTS enough will step up and admit the truth which is they simply GOT BEAT by a SUPPOSEDLY inferior team. Congrats to the fine players of your team for making it as far as they did. I was an adamant supporter of how much talent was on SWD this year. It is shameful the playoffs are a one and done deal, because I really feel that Griffin and SWD were the two top teams in the state. Now there is ONE. The Mighty Griffin Bears continue to STEAMROLL with another POWER PROVING STATEMENT win over those Gators from Ware county. Next up….The CHEE……It should be a good one.

GREAT JOB BEARS!!!! So glad that SWD, Tucker and Marist lost. It’s good to see some of these other teams get knocked off their high horse. Griffin is the best. I would rather be good than lucky any day!
Also can anyone give me some info on Appalachee’s stadium, seating and parking? I was looking at the map of the school and it doesn’t look like it’s going to hold the Bear nation. Beacuse we all know that in Griffin, “We all come together, we all leave together!!!”

Okay Bear Fan, let’s chill out a little. This time last year we were on this vent beating our chest saying that Tuckers stadium would not hold our fans, and by luck the game was moved to a larger stadium. However, our Bear fans let us down and very FEW traveled to Dekalb county with us. As I have stated before, brag on the boys, not on the fans. The bear nation has dwindled down. We didn’t even fill up our home side last night. Like an opposing fan said on the other vent, it is a shame that Griffin has not come out and supported their Griffin team more. I was at the gate last night selling raffle tickets, which by the way goes to feed the boys after the game, and 95% of the “fans” would not buy a $1 raffle ticket. Ride throughout this town and see how many signs you see up supporting our Bears. So PLEASE don’t tell me how great our “Bear Nation” is, because it is simply not true. So, I am not trying to criticize or hamper our support, I am just hoping that you guys will prove me wrong and go above and beyond anything we’ve seen thus far.

Loyalbearfan- I was on the sideline at Memorial last night. The home side was full, save for the upper left corner of the stands. Aside from that, our side was packed. Matt-GHS 1999 did you go to the Tucker game last year? How many games have you been to this year? How ahave you supported your home team, by showing up on here and in the stands. Trust me there is alot more to it than that. I have no agenda and no kids on the team, I just think it’s sad that people can not show more support to this program. In a town the size of Griffin we should see signs on local business and not have to worry about how to feed the kids post games meals. I assuming since you are on the sidelines you were once a GHS Bear but hey what have you contributed to this program. We have great kids whom I love with all of my heart, and the best coaching staff in the world. But, there are so many things that we need that we simply can not afford. Last nights crowd was half way decent, but what about the other home games. We had 2 games late in the season that the stands we only 1/4 on the way full. Our bears have been undefeated all year. FInally, if you truly are a true supporter come on out and join the Touchdown club, I know we could use your help. That is waht a TRUE supporter would so.

I’ve been to every Griffin game this year(home or road) when I haven’t had a game to officiate. As I am an official w/Middle Georgia Football and our guys did the game and the chains last night.
Yes, I was at the Tucker game and we represented very well. Just like we do at all of our road games, when we usually have more people then the home side. Me and you are seeing 2 different things. Again, I was on the Ware sideline last night as part of the chain crew so I had the best view of the place. Aside from the upper left corner, the place was full. I don’t know what else you want.
It is a shame that nobody put into the $1 raffle. Usually there is more participation then that, but to think the place wasn’t representing last night isn’t true at all. Heck, when we’re on the road, not only do we have more people then the home side, but we’re twice as loud.
And I’m not making excuses, but I think the fans probably expect the Bears to get deep into the playoffs every year and when they do the place is full, like we’ve seen the last 2 games. It’ll never be the late 80’s-90’s again w/the crowd, not just here but everywhere, but we still have very good crowds. You can blame the decrease in crowds on 2 things, 1.The economy, and 2.The split of the schools. People who went to Griffin games in the 90’s are going to Spalding games now b/c their kids play for them. It happens.
And you should know that the stands are never full during the week of the fair. It’s been that way forever.

Loyalbearfan-Also, I have been a STH from ‘02-’08. I didn’t get them this yr. b/c I have my GHSA Officials’ Pass so I can get into any game I want for free. But I’m still there every week when I don’t have a game.

10:29 pm
Matt-GHS 1999 – Well buddy, the SEVEN members of our booster club (five of who do not even have children on the team!!!) do everything that we POSSIBLY can. Aside from selling ads and begging for money, we arrive at the home games at 5:30 to put up all the signs on the fence, sell merchandise, and try to talk Bear fans, who blow us off and act as if we are doing it to entertain ourselves, into buying a measley $1 raffle ticket. We miss the first half of the game because after we finish working our tails off to raise money for our boys, we still have to pack up all of our equipment before we can sit down and enjoy the game like the other 99.9% of the people who come to the games and leave. Then, after the game we have to stick around for another half hour to an hour to take the signs and banner down. Our Touchdown Club President works all day, comes home on Friday to get her middle school child, loads coolers in her car for the after game burgers, goes and drops them off at McDonalds, and THEN goes to the game and proceeds to do all the tasks I listed above. Not to mention, she goes to the school for something everyday and to Sam’s at least 3 times a week. I have missed 2 games in 8 years because I had to work, and I actually have to pay to get in. I have sat at Luella in the pouring down rain with TWELVE other bear fans and watched the Bears. So DO NOT tell me that the booster club should go around town and have to tell people to hang signs in their windows. That’s like saying that we need to tell you to wipe your tail after you use the restroom. We all have real jobs on top of our volunteer positions, and we do not have loads of spare time to wander around town and do our part of begging them to support us. Other than the faithful few churches in the community, the people of our town do nothing to help our boys. They may come to get enjoyment out of the game, but they do NOTHING to help the program operate. It’s great to have a large number of FANS, but what we need are SUPPORTERS. You may think you are helping the team by contributing money to the athletic department; however, everything that this team needs to be successful comes from the touchdown club. So, unless you help us out by contributing your time or money, aside from attending the games, you do NOTHING to help the Griffin Bears. Thanks a lot Matt you just proved my point about the “Bear Nation.”

Well you know Bear Fan and Matt GHS 1999 someone should pat loyalbearfan on the back. No body and I do mean nobody has done more for the Griffin Bears period. Will you are sitting on your dead butt and complaining about DeVo, loyalbearfan is doing everything to help raise money for the team, and then making sure that the boys are fed before the game and after the game. You want to be a loyal supporter, come help feed the boys before the game Friday or even better be one of the few that spemd their Friday after Thanksgiving cooking so that the boy’s can eat before traveling to Winder. I am a touchdown club member, and I don’t have a kid on the team, but I try to sell tickets, shirts, hat’s every Friday night. That money goes to the Football team for tapes, letterman’s jackets, the helmet the kids run through ect. I also have season tickets, but that money is spread throughout all sports at Griffin High. Consessions goes to the band. So if you really want to support the kids join the T’Down club only 25.00 a year, buy a shirt from the club, not one at Walmart. It take alot to keep things going, not just sitting in the stand. Why not join in instead of running your mouth at the people that actually do.

Greetings fellow Griffin fans and HELLO to the CHEE! We are fired up about getting a chance to play those “Cardiac Cats” and have been hearing all the great things about them. I plan on leaving around noon on Friday, just to take a non-stressful black Friday trip and stop and enjoy the day. Gotta love High School football, especially this time of year and when your team is still in it.
GO GRIFFIN BEARS!
Yes indeed I buy SEVERAL tickets each game, and I actually enjoy giving some of them to kids as I go find my seat. I usually take my Mom and Aunt with me as they are quite the fans also! My Aunt won that coveted “Prize Basket” a few weeks ago, and I have yet to wrangle that shirt from her…so I bought one..lol. I know the money is needed, and as soon as I get another job, (laid off for a year now…bummer) I plan on joining the touchdown club also. At any rate, I commend all the things everyone does, from the fans to the concession stands and all points in between, it does take a monumental effort so lets all just work together on it.
Have to Keep the BEAR EXPRESS ROLLING!!! Next stop……The CHEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
