Georgia High School Football Daily Spotlight: Class AAAA Playoff Preview

Richmond Academy at Thomas Co. Central
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jackets’ Nest, Thomasville
Records, rankings: Richmond Academy is 8-3, the No. 2 seed from Region 3-AAAA and unranked; Thomas County Central is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 1-AAAA and ranked No. 5.
Last meeting: Thomas County Central won 35-14 in the 1993 first round.
Three things to know:
1. Thomas Central prefers to run, but Eric Dodson threw for 188 yards in last week’s 15-8 victory over Alcovy.
2. Richmond Academy has its most victories in a season since 1987 and its first state-playoff win since 1970.
3. Mar-Qon Medlock, who has missed time this season while injured, threw for more than 200 yards in last week’s come-from-behind victory over Glynn Academy.
Winner plays: Tucker-Sandy Creek winner

Tucker at Sandy Creek
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, The Battlefield, Tyrone
Records, rankings: Tucker is 9-2, the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AAAA and ranked No. 10; Sandy Creek is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 5-AAAA and ranked No. 3.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Tucker is the defending champion in AAAA.
2. Rajion Neal, who has committed to Mississippi State, is a 1,000-yard rusher and the top running back on his half of the AAAA draw.
3. Sandy Creek has won 10 games for the fourth time in seven seasons but has never advanced past the second round in four tries.
Winner plays: Richmond Academy-Thomas County Central winner

Ware County at Griffin
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Griffin
Records, rankings: Ware County is 6-5, the No. 2 seed from Region 2-AAAA and unraked; Griffin is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 4-AAAA and ranked No. 1.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Griffin runs what coach Steven Devoursney calls a spread wing hybrid offense that averages 7.0 yards per play. Quarterback Marcus Waller has thrown for nearly 1,200 yards and rushed for 600 yards.
2. Ware County’s coach is Ed Dudley, who led Walton of Cobb County to a Region 6-AAAAA title last season.
3. The last time that Griffin was 11-0 was 2006, but the Bears were seeded second to Northside, which also was 11-0. That put Griffin on the road in the second round, and the Bears lost 20-0 to Creekside, which was led by Eric Berry, now an All-America safety at Tennessee.
Winner plays: Marist-Apalachee winner

Marist at Apalachee
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, R. Harold Harrison Stadium, Winder
Records, rankings: Marist is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAAA and ranked No. 7; Apalachee is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 8-AAAAA and ranked No. 6.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Marist has won 27 consecutive home playoff games but lost six of eight road (non-neutral) playoff games this decade.
2. Apalachee is called the “Cardiac Cats” on its football Web site. The team has won two overtime games and another game by one point.
3. Both are running teams with a feature back that’s closing in on 1,000 yards. For Marist, which runs the wishbone, it’s Matt Connors. For Apalachee, which runs a Wing-T, it’s Jon Lee.
Winner plays: Ware County-Griffin winner

Rockdale County at Hiram
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Hiram Stadium, Hiram
Records, rankings: Rockdale County is 8-3, the No. 3 seed from Region 8-AAAA and unranked; Hiram is 11-0, the No. 1 seed from Region 7-AAAA and ranked No. 4.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Hiram is in the second round of the playoffs for the first time in the program’s 10-year history. The Hornets lost in the first round in their previous three playoff appearances.
2. Rockdale County is one of the hottest teams in Class AAAA, winning seven consecutive games after a 1-3 start.
3. Hiram’s offense is led by Charlie Sashington, who rushed for 121 yards in the Hornets’ subregion-clinching victory against Sprayberry and 143 yards in the region championship game against Dalton. He was injured in the playoff victory against Chamblee but is expected to play.
Winner plays: Westside, Macon-Lakeside, Evans winner

Westside, Macon at Lakeside, Evans
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Panther Stadium, Evans
Records, rankings: Westside is 10-1, the No. 2 seed from Region 1-AAAA and ranked No. 8; Lakeside is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 3-AAAA and unranked.
Last meeting: Lakeside won 26-15 in 1999.
Three things to know:
1. Lakeside, which started its program in 1998, is making its fourth appearance in the state playoffs and its first since 2000. The Panthers had never won a state playoff game until beating Statesboro last week.
2. Lakeside has one of the state’s best defenses, giving up just 3.5 points per game. The Panthers have seven shutouts, including four in a row.
3. Lakeside’s victory in the teams’ last meeting, 26-15 in 1999, cost Westside a playoff berth, but the Seminoles responded with four consecutive 10-win seasons.
Winner plays: Rockdale County-Hiram winner

Clarke Central at Southwest DeKalb
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Panthersville Stadium, Decatur
Records, rankings: Clarke Central is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAA and unranked; Southwest DeKalb is 10-1, the No. 1 seed from Region 6-AAAA and ranked No. 2.
Last meeting: Southwest DeKalb won 44-21 in the 1995 quarterfinals.
Three things to know:
1. These teams met five times in the quarterfinals or semifinals from 1977-1995, but they haven’t played each other in 14 years. Clarke Central, which is in the second round for the first time since 1997, leads the series 5-2.
2. Southwest DeKalb is allowing just 7.4 points per game and has given up a touchdown or less in eight of its 11 games.
3. Clarke Central allows 15.1 points per game. The 28 points scored by Mays last week were the most the Gladiators have given up in a game this season.
Winner plays: North Clayton-Brunswick winner

North Clayton at Brunswick
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Glynn County Stadium, Brunswick
Records, rankings: North Clayton is 9-2, the No. 2 seed from Region 4-AAAA and ranked No. 9; Brunswick is 8-3, the No. 1 seed from Region 2-AAAA and unranked.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. North Clayton is led by running back Clarence Jackson, who has rushed for 1,678 yards this season, including 143 in the Eagles’ victory against Bainbridge last week.
2. Brunswick is trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1999, when it reached the championship game and lost to Lowndes 17-0.
3. North Clayton has reached the quarterfinals just once since 1963. The Eagles lost to Carrollton 35-21 in the 1997 quarters.
Winner plays: Clarke Central-Southwest DeKalb winner

As a Griffin fan and alum, I’d love to know more about Ware County. I know the Gators are 6-5 at this point and have lost to a lot of playoff teams (Burke Co, Lowndes, Stephenson, and Statesboro) and beaten some too (Glynn Academy, Brunswick and Evans).

Is there someone who can fill us in on personnel, schemes, etc.?

And if I may throw out a pick, North Clayton, with Clarence Jackson, can handle Brunswick.

Does anyone here give Richmond Academy a chance? Mar-Quon Medlock is a dangerous run-pass threat.

Here are my predictions for the Second Round:

Thomas County Central D. Richmond Academy – TCC is just that good, so Richmond Academy better be on there “A” game if they plan on advancing anywhere.

Tucker D. Sandy Creek – Tucker comes from a very good region, so just because they finished third do not mean that they won’t play like one when they beat Sandy Creek, its not an upset because Sandy Creek is not as good as they have been made up to be.

Griffin D. Ware Co. – Griffin is just way too good for Ware Co. but do not expect this game to be a blowout at all though.

Apalachee D. Marist – Marist is a great team and a big powerhouse in AAAA, but those Wildcats of Apalachee just know how to win when it matters most. The Cardiac Cats will pull off an upset and move on the see Griffin.

Hiram D. Rockdale Co. – Hiram is going to win this game if they can contain the scrappy Offense that Rockdale Co. runs.

Westside, Macon D. Lakeside, Evans – Westside should handle Lakeside, but we will see on Friday.

Southwest DeKalb D. Clarke Central – SWD is very good and Clarke Central is average, expect SWD is win at home.

North Clayton D. Brunswick – This is going to be an intersting game because both teams are about even, but I am going with North Clayton in a very close game.

North Clayton is strong, I have seen them play but can anyone tell me how they lost to Dutchtown.

redekalbfan, Dutchtown was a very good football team. They gave everyone they lost to a heck of a game. They even held there own with Griffin, so don’t think that North Clayton is weak because of this loss. Of course in any football game, the underdog can always pull an upset. Good luck to all the remaining teams!!

Richmond Academy at Thomas Co. Central – Home team wins this one. Take Thomas CO. Central

Tucker at Sandy Creek- Wife’s Alma Mater is Tucker, but got to go with Sandy Creek

Ware County at Griffin- I know what I wish, but I am realistic. Griffin in a rout!!

Marist at Apalachee- If the Chee does not make dumb mistakes they can win this. Take the Chee in a close game.

Rockdale County at Hiram- Hiram finally plays a team with more speed than them. Upset- Rockdale

Westside, Macon at Lakeside, Evans- Take the home team. Lakside Evans

Clarke Central at Southwest DeKalb- My old B-Team coach at Towers 1978 still has it. See what you lost Towers.. Take SWD

Somebody, please tell me why in the world is SWD (VS) CC being played at Panthersville stadium? Is Dekalb county crazy or what? This game should be played at Memorial stadium! That is usually where SWD play their home games. MLK is out of town this week….so this game could be played there on Saturday. What if CC brings a whole lot of people with them…where are they supposed to sit? This is so DUMB especially when you have a perfectly BIG enough stadium to host this game!

I don’t understand it either…. the county stands to make plenty of money if SWD were to play at Hallford…….I agree K-Man……I could see if this was SWD’s normal home stadium. Doesn’t make a lick of sense. I hate one sided stadium’s.

Okay now im SWD all day but TUCKER is a good team they have an excellent coach and they will win and win big against Sandy creek Reigon 6AAAA is like the SEC Tucker Marist and SWD will all be in the final four match ups. Tucker has toooo Much talent to loose to Sandy creek who onlly play one team with a winning record this year. SWD will dominate as usual

I believe SWD as was the case last weekend had to flip a coin with Stephenson to determine who would play at Hallford Stadium on this coming friday…they (SWD) of course could have opted to play on saturday at Hallford but Clark Central didn’t want to, at least that’s what i’m hearing…who knows…anyway it doesn’t much matter, SWD will still dominate the Gladiators regardless of the venue

I sure hope so, i was at the Tucker/Dalton game last week and the truth be known that you can pretty much throw all day on the Tigers from Tucker if a team so chooses to…i was also at the Tucker/SWD game and the Tigers shut down the Panthers run game, minus the services of Mr. Malcome, but they’re (SWD) aerial attack threw on Tucker all night long!!!

Tank you SWD and yes region 6AAAA fan your right they did pass all over us consider that daltons QB was 9 for 22 And their biggest pass gaibn of the day was a half back pass trick play. once the Qb drops back to pass and he gets hit by Vaughters, Brown, Or bryson he will be begging to give the ball up. Our D is too fast for a bunch of sissy boys from fayette! SWD is full of amazing talent that matches up great against our Db’s thats why SWD pass all over us. But nobody can RUn on TUC

I hate to say it but Vaughters, Bryson and Mr. Brown all came into the season with high expectations on them to be the anchors of the defense, and they have sorely disappointed…it’s a good thing Mr. Vaughters has outstanding grades so he can definitely pick and choose what schools he may want to sign with in 2011…there’s definitely talent at Tucker but it’s young, but winning some playoff games makes you grow up fast…the first round game against Dalton pretty much turned out like i predicted, a win, but Dalton’s QB, Mr. Stryker (great name) and his wideouts burned the cb’s and safety’s all night long. i.e. no pressure on the QB!!! As you move deeper into the playoffs you certainly gonna meet stronger teams and God forbid they are able to throw the ball because you will need some sembelance of a pass rush to help keep your db’s off an island

Vaughter had Wrist surgery and hasnt been 100 percent this whole year last week was his first game without a cast. Brown lead all of Georgia in blocked kicks and maybe we arent stacking up in sacks but we hit you hard. Our defenders did not get ” burned 1 time” everyone of their receptions was under 15 yeards except for the 1 big play. That is called running a good route. Not getting burned inthe least my friend. Last year we got blown away by marist and every gave up on us then too so do us all a favor and just forget about us and keep picking the other team to win. It does nothing but make you look stupid in the end.

I’m not picking Sandy Creek to beat Tucker, just stating some facts and opinions…Mr. Vaughters stays hurt and week in and week out Bryson and Mr. Brown fail to show up…there is no impact players on this team as in years past, i.e. Jonathan Davis, AJ Bouye, Dion Roberson, Tevin Holliman, Drayton Calhoun, Myke Compton, Asher Allen, Dwayne Harris, Robert Jones, Brandon Lang, Hamilton Sims, Tavares Kearney aka TKO, Trey Buice, Jabari Davis, Darius Swain, Patrick Pass and oh yeah Thomas Brown…that being said, this team is still loaded just inexperienced and that takes playing time to achieve…they’ll definitely be an outstanding team next year…i wouldn’t be suprised if they made it to the semis and dare i say the DOME again lol…

My predictions for This Week:

Richmond @ TCC- TCC

Tucker @ Sandy Creek- Tucker, last years champs gotta take them after that beating they gave Dalton.

Ware Co. @ Griffin- Griffin- If the rumors are true they have a great chance to take it

Marist @ Apalachee- Marist. Dont think Apalachee can do it.

Rockdale @ Hiram- Hiram. After a scare last week i dont think the Hornets will take this game as lightly. I say they dont let the upset happen.

Westside @ Lakeside-Westside. VERY close game. Good defense against a good offense.

Clark @ SWD- SWD. I hear their pretty good this year.

N Clayton @ Brunswick- North Clayton. Dont know why Brunswick is even in the playoffs.

:-) GO GRIFFIN BEARS!! :-)
Griffin is ON A MISSION I tell ya. They are quite the offensive juggernaut, with an “air-raid -at- will” ability to score on ANY play from ANY where on the field. All that being said…THE DEFENSE IS ABSOLUTELY RELENTLESS. Hey look, I’m a homer for sure, having played for the Mighty Bears back in the day, but I have been to every game and watched every play this year. As a Die-hard Bear fan who bleeds Green and Gold, I can assure you that Ware County has NEVER faced an opponent with the all out TENACITY as Griffin. Fueled on by the powerful cheers of the BEST FANS IN THE STATE, the Bear Den will be ROCKIN’! Im calling on ALL FANS from our region who’s schools are out of it now….Come To check out the Bears this Friday…plenty of room and we’d Love to have you. Met some Great OLA fans last friday, noticed a few Dutchtown Bulldogs shirts, and even a Jonesboro Cardinal fan found his way to the “Grip”! of course im goin to take SWD in this one. I think that last week’s game against my mays raiders proved that clarke isn’t as good as they think they are. The entire raider offense was new this year and cc gave up a 21-7 lead in the third quarter to only win by the score 0f 31-28. congrats on the win and all, but there is no way u can barely beat mays and think ur going to beat SWD.. nt at all… now Hiram.. i jus happen to like the vibe of hiram’s team this year

Rockdale vs Hiram should be an interesting game. I hear they both run the same offense and defense so it should come down to who has the better players. I read that Rockdale is on a hot streak with 7 wins but Hiram is on fire with 11 wins. 3 of those wins were against ranked teams. Let’s go Hiram.

Why ARE SWD games at Panthersville Stadium? A coin flip decided that one? You’re kidding me with that one right? Well I guess Panthersville it is…… SWD-34 Clarke Central-17.

It wasn’t a coin flip that decided who would play at Hallford. The powers that be just decided that Stephenson would get first bids at Hallford throughout the play-offs period. There seems to be some internal personal preference thing going on. Like I said earlier doesn’t make a lick of sense to me.

1980BEAR,

No no my friend no jealousy at all!!! Just stated my personal opinion…I have nothing against your team…I give them credit, they are good. I also know enough about football to know that many times teams who have been the front dog all season against lower competition, might have trouble if they have to deal with a little adversity! Not saying that Griffin will…I’m just curious how they would react if they got behind against another good team…would they rise to meet the challenge or would they crumble??? Thats all I’m saying…no attack on your team at all!! One thing about it, we shall find out as we go deeper in the playoffs. Oh yea, I saw them play dutchtown.
