I can’t remember a better second round in the highest classification.
Lowndes-Camden County goes without saying. Playing a tougher schedule week in, week out, will help Lowndes, so I’m picking the Vikes on the road. I know Camden beat Northside last season in the same second round, but that was when Camden was the better team. This year, Lowndes is the better team.
Other amazin’ games in AAAAA –
MLK vs. Newnan (Mack Brown vs. Alec Ogletree)
Woodstock at North Gwinnett (I like both these teams a long and think either could’ve made the semis with another draw)
Roswell at Grayson (Is Pemberton hurt? How is Champaign? Good upset pick game here. Cool story about the backup QB at Roswell throwing the winning TD pass in OT. Who will cover Chris Boyd?)
South Gwinnett at Lassiter (Can anybody stop Hutson Mason?)
Colquitt County at Stephenson (Good news for Jags is that they get to see the spread offense before having to face Lassiter. Bad news is that they might not live to see next week. As Ron Gartrell said to me today, “We have so much trouble with South Georgia teams.’’)
Other stuff …
Team of the week: Liberty County. I really love teams that turn things around. Best win in program history against LaGrange last week. … I would’ve given the same kudos to Chattooga, btw.
Now, let’s discuss Carver of Columbus. OK, you beat Burke County 28-21. Burke is the best No. 4 team in the state, but still. Is this what a state-championship team would do to Burke? Is it too late to jump on the Gainesville bandwagon? I’m only now starting to realize how good Gainesville’s defense is. Carver didn’t want me on their bandwagon in the first place, but I’m curious to see how those two teams do this week.
In AAAA, it’s two teams – Griffin, SWD.
In AAA, it’s two – Carver, Gainesville.
In AA, it’s three – Fitz, Calhoun, Buford.
In A, it’s two – Wesleyan, Twiggs.

SouthGa Rules I’m sure it also helps Warner Robins, Kingsland, and the Atlanta area when 4,000 to 7,000 Lowndes fans go to their town and spend the night. At the dome semis we frequently had crowds over $10,000 most of whom spent the night. At Parkview in 2004 we had a larger crowd at the game than they did, as told in the AJC and Gwinnett newspapers.

I hear you but it all starts somewhere, heck Buck already has a championship in the highest class. Was he coaching then? As far as Stephenson goes what did Lowdnes win before 99. We could’ve had the same discussion about them 10 years ago that we’re having about Stephenson now, only exception is before Lowdnes started winning titles they were just the other school in Valdosta. Stephenson has always been winning but just can’t get over their playoff blues, my thing is they have to snap out of it at some point. If it doesn’t happen then it maybe the coach. Lay off Buck though, he may have gotten a little old fashioned but he deserves repesct for what he’s done at SWD.

P-ridge gets out coached by brookwood and then there gonna have to come to the mac and play us (NSWR). Lowndes just flat out whips camden unless the officials serve up some home cooking. We all know stephenson isnt coached up but I dont know how much better propst is since he does not have his same O coordinator he did at hoover. ( I wish you all could have seen how he acted against us – NSWR)……………………showed his tail! I would like to know though, has anyone seen NSWR’s defense and stephenson defense play this year. And which one is better?

sports fan,
That’s what I am trying to tell the Jag Fans. Colquitt County has one of the best defense I have seen this year. Why? They are from region 1-AAAAA who are know for great defenses. Stephenson wont score 20 points.

Thanks Mr. Holcomb for continuing to write about Garrison Smith at Frederick Douglass High School. Garrison is an awesome football player and an even greater person. He loves the game of football and continued to rally alongside his teammates even though they did not have such a winning season. I was at the game (Douglass vs. Luella (at Luella) where Garrison was penalized and eventually ejected from the game which led to the suspension. Garrison should not have been penalized because those guys from Luella had been harrassing/taunting and playing nasty football all night. They did not come to play football. The referees have done this Douglass for the last two (2) years that Douglass have traveled to Luella. My son who is a senior and a “DAMN” good football football player on Douglass’ team made a tackle on one of Luella’s football players during the opening play of the game and the head ref made the comment “coach he did not have to hit him that hard. I bet he didn’t do MLK like that. I don’t support unsportmanslike conduct by no mean, but as a football player you can only take so much of other players getting away with unsportsmanlike conduct. It’s just sometimes bring out the beast. May the “best” team win!!!

I agree with you. I will go on to say that this will be a fight to the finish. I give it a low scoring game. As much as I like both teams, I believe Lowndes may pull this one out this year. Who ever wins this game, will win the Class AAAAA State Title.

They are known for great defense but that’s what was said about Valdosta last week. It was stated over and over that Newnan hadn’t seen a defense like Valdosta’s all year and although it took a while they did what they wanted in the second half. If it wasn’t for the long kickoff return they would’ve been run out of Newnan. A good defense is a
good defense no matter what region you play in bottom line, are you saying Colquitt’s defense is better than Lowdnes and NSWR?

Decatur 4 Life I’ve seen the lowndes defense in 11 games, Northside’s once and Colquitt’s once. I would say Northside has the best, followed by Lowndes, then Warner Robins, then Colquitt, insofar as defense is concerned.

Decatur 4 life – Colquitt can esasily score 21 or more on Stephenson. What ENR calls a “dancing band” won’t help the Jags this week. Next week Stphenson and UG can get together and play basketball. (I just hope Camden can join’em!) Colquitt has a very fast and strong running back and their QB can chunk it and run it! They have one really great receiver and some “good” ones. Their interior linemen are good on both sides of the ball. I look for a 1-5A sweep this week. Goooo Northside, Lowndes & Colquitt!

Jackson will definitely have their hands full with Liberty Co. Friday night. As I see it, it is a toss up. But the time is now for Jackson to “light it up” in the playoffs and beat a good team by a good margin. Come on Red Devils, this is your year and opportunity to make a statement in the playoffs!

Randy prosen – while driving to Camden County High School, I plan to drive to Folkston from waycross and turn left at the 1st sign I see that says Hwy 40. I undestand this goes slightly around Folkston and runs into the real Hwy 40 on the east side of town. I guess the 1st one is like a truck route. Then I was told to turn left just past a Baptist Church onto Colerain Road which goes thru Kingsland and continues past I-95 and is the actual road the stadium is on. Is this Colerain Road the best route or should we just take Hwy 40 to I-95 then go up one exit?
I’d appreciate your help (or anyone’s). Thanks

Vikings on a Mission – The Camden principal said their fans start tailgating by 8 am, and the stadium gates will open at 5:30 pm. All of our seats are general admission. The chartered busses will get there about 5:15 to 5:30. We plan to be at the gate at 5:30 when it opens, hopefully ahead of the busses, even if it means buying supper at the concession stands. Some Lowndes folks are leaving Valdosta at noon and will tailgate. I’m sure you are welcome to join them. However the Touchdown Club is not feeding the Lowndes fans like we have done in the past on some road trips. If we go to Atlanta next week I believe we will cook and feed the fans, like we did at Parkview in 04, Harrison in 06, and Stephenson in 99, and some other long road trips.

callitlikeittis we at Stephenson are not sensitive about JAG football …However we are quite PASSIONATE about our Coaches,Kids, and Parents that make up Jaguar Football .Just because this team uses a pro set means nothing because it all boils down to match-ups .Can our front four handle(control)thier offensive line…(YES)Can our Backers clean up the left-over fall out (YES)…Can our corners match-up with thier Receivers (no DOUBT)…lastly can we contain the top (YES) we have two of the best safeties in AAAAA …Not only will Stephenson control the football field … we WILL dictate what CC’s offense will do.Trying to throw from the shotgun won’t work …direct snaps won’t work … spread won’t work…CC had better be ready to be hit and hit often …there are 11 guys on this defense that love to hit and hit and hit …We will score in a varity of ways but mostley by trucking …what I’m trying to say is CC will just be hurring up to be hit and hit again …our O scores often so our defense is use to playing is CC use to being hit? start STRONG stay STRONG finish FAST … go Jaguars….,,,,,,,

Since Liberty County had been under the radar, and had beaten a great LaGrange football team, they stunned the entire Western Part of Georgia. When driving from Folkston on Hwy 40 toward Camden County High School, is it best to veer off to the left onto Colerain Road or stay on Hwy 40 to I-95? I see where Colerain becomes Laurel Parkway, and then MLK and the Colerain again according to the map at the Camden County High School website, and the high school is located on this road.

GO WILDCATS, I will be there tailgating at 12 noon with my fellow WILDCAT FANS. And I’m one who thinks this will be a high scoring game. Both offenses are just to good. Both have game breakers, at the running back position, actually both teams have 2 great runners. Both teams have good recievers and Camden has one really good one. Lowndes does throw the ball more. But Camden is capable of throwing it. One thing is for sure the winner will be 5 AAAAA STATE CHAMPS. Good luck Lowndes, and have a safe trip and God Bless. There is a mutal respect for Lowndes, One guy in the stands at a game earlier this year made a comment to me. He said if we(meaning Camden)doesn’t win the Championship, he would prefer Lowndes and I agree. We will just rotate it back and forth between the two every year. May the best team Win. Get there early and get your seats because the WILDCAT DEN will be packed. But i must admitt the last 2 games between the two played at the DEN was a low scoring affair.

I think the biggest threat that Stephenson poses for Colquitt is the running back Sanders. As for hitting, that is all that they do down there in South Georgia. You will see how tough they play football down in south georgia. I do not know if you have been to football games down in south georgia but it is quite different down there..it is a very tough style of football. I do not think Stephenson will out tough those country boys from Colquitt County. Good Luck to Stephenson though.

A VikingFan, I’m not completely sure but they were doing construction on Colerain Rd so I’m suggesting staying on HWY 40 and take I-95 north until you get to exit six (next exit after you get on 95). Another route that takes you through housing is stay on hwy 40 until you reach Applebees, turn left at Applebees and go to the second stopsign, turn right and stay on that road and it will take you right to the HS. Safe travels and good luck, of course I’m pulling for our WildCats and if we can’t win it all I’d rather you all did. Do anyone know if the game will be on the internet? The GHSA’s position on the bracket is that ‘no one has complained until now, and there’s nothing that can be done about it now, so let’s focus on the games.’ As far as the first two rounds, the GHSA won’t change that because travel trumps anything else there. Things will not change only if school officials protest and make a proposal. Fans and the media will have no impact, IMO.
