The new Classifications have been posted. Some surprises enstored for you. Bradwell Institute dropped down from AAAAA to AAAA along with Valdosta.

I am sure by now some have read the tentative classification of teams by the GHSA based on student population. Some surprises:

SportsFan 31313, I did not know Bradwells enrollment fell in the AAAA range at 1848. Perhaps that is new number because I thought you had AAAAA enrollment. You may be the guys saving the Savannah Schools from having to play at the AAA level. You will be in a great regions with the likes of Statesboro, Brunswich, Ware Cty etc. if the ones in power play where BI is classfied. What do you think? Valdosta is in the 1750 range but will probably play up to help 1AAAAA region. She will be at a dis-advantage with Lowndes unless some adjustments are made to their school zone or build a third public HS in the county. Maybe it was yo or HomeFieldAdvantage that told me that the county and city had separate school systems. Wow!

Jaybo: A rumor came about that Thomas County may move up to 1AAAAA but
when I saw your numbers 1500 plus I knew that would be suicidal. Besides you are looking to win it all next year-lol. Nothing will be settled before December but schools must notify the GHSA by 25 Nov. 2009 where they will opt to play up.

Boy, I am going to miss 1AAAAA! As long as we keep building medium range schools in Houston County we will probably stay in AAAA or below.

Northside. Valdosta and Lowndes are different systems. There has been talks of a new high school down here but for the county so only Lowndes would be effected.

Wow just looked at the tenative AAAA classifications for the next 4 yrs. If all stays the same I think the 10 best teams in AAAA would beat the 10 best teams in AAAAA. AAAAA would lose Stephenson, Northside Warner Robbins, Warner Robbins, and Valdosta.

Northside Observer – Valdosta has 1859 students and probably will play “UP”. Besides, they could pick up 31 students before next school year anyway and be a “Normal” AAAAA school. I wish Northside and WR would also choose to “Play up.”

Ware County and Statesboro apparently are going to be AAA schools according to today’s report. Don’t know what that will do to Bradwell Institute.

Why are there only 52 AAAAA schools hen there are 89 AAAA, and 88 in AAA and AA? Why the disparity? Brings up another question. Should 32 AAAAA schools out of 52 continue to make the playoffs? I’m sure the academic folks will may hay with that! And for good reason. In this year’s AAAAA playoffs, we have 23 AAAAA teams, 8 AAAA teams, and one AAA team. Doesn’t make good sense to me to keep the same playoff system.

Dr Goober, YO, and all Lowndes fans. Have you heard the latest on Tyler Hunter? I don’t think he’ll be able to play anymore football. BTW to anyone who is interested. In our game with Peachtree Ridge this year, Tyler Hunter ran the opening Kickoff back for a td. After we kicked off, and about Peachtree’s 3rd play, Tyler Hunter picked off a pass and scored again. After we kicked off again, on Peachtree Ridge’s 2nd play he stripped the ball carrier of the ball, and Lowndes quickly scored again. Tyler is the son of Brice Hunter, who starred at Valdosta High, UGA, and Tampa Bay. Tyler is a Junior Def Back for Lowndes, and part time wingback. Even played some QB last year. Reportedly he has a congenital problem with his spine which accounts for why he has had two shoulder “stingers” this year. Specialists in Tallahassee advised him to give up football or he could risk paralysis, I’ve been told. I’m sure an official announcement will soon be made. Please everyone keep Tyler Hunter, Number 15, in your prayers!

OK everyone listen up out there! What in the heck is going on with the “doom and despair” articles on Mceachern?? Yesterday I read the tear jerker about Desmond Vallean surviving the Oklahoma Bombing and then in tomorrow’s paper there is a “must read” article about the Coach having Lou Gehrigs disease, another heart breaking story to read. Seriously, why now?? I am just wondering why these are printed in round one in the playoffs whether they play us or would have played Parkview. We have a game to focus on!!! Input please!!! Sounds like physiological warfare to me!

BROOKWOOD MOM: I think the coach is at Greenville, a Class A school.
It’s a shame about Tyler Hunter. Does he have stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal column?
If so, then that was the same thing that caused Cooper Manning, Peyton & Eli’s brother, to give up football at Ole Miss.
Upset Predictions: Brookwood over McEachern & Collins Hill over Roswell.
Region 1-AA to get a clean sweep, but Region 1-AAAAA will not (3-1). Newnan over Valdosta.

SouthGaRules – We’ll all know more about Tyler in the next few days. It sounds like what you described. He is seeing a specialist in Tallahassee, after an MRI in Valdosta.

Please everyone keep him in your prayers. Hopefully with help from the Head Referee Upstairs, he will get a good report when all the tests are done. But he told some class mates he won’t play this week, and one of their moms put his remarks on another sports blog this evening. With privacy laws being what they are, no one outside his family can really say what’s going on. So far everything has been hearsay and third person comments. I for one am keeping my fingers crossed and doing some praying.

TCCHS JACKETS – You can forget AAA. Your FTE is too high. You are in the middle of the pack of AAAA schools. You can choose to play “up” but you can NOT choose to play “down.” But we’d love to have you in 1-AAAAA.

Jaybo – I think Northside and Warner Robins both would play up if it was left up to them. But the School Board in Perry Ga will make that decison based on travel cost comparisons for all the Houston County teams, for all sports. Trust me, I was on the School Board for 8 years, I know how those people think. Playing in one region as opposed to another, when you consider all the sports schools participate in, can be a significant cost difference.

Wow did you see those reclassifications. IF it stays the same then region 6AAAA would be the strongest in GA HANDS DOWN. You got Southwest Dekalb, Tucker, Marist, Chamblee, and Stone Moutain. Then you add Stephenson, Union Grove, and possibly MLK. WOW. What a season that would be. Impossible for all those teams to make it out undefeated with the exception of possibly Stephenson. Hope it is this way.

Jaybo, you did not ask me to answer this question. However, the answer rests with Head Football Coach and Athletics Director Conrad Nix. Nix has made it clear that he has no intention to play up. For me, I absolutely agree with that assessment. A school has more GHSA activities than only football. Furthermore, it makes no logical sense to put your extra-curriculur activities and sports at a competitive disadvantage.

Some of the best examples include today’s Region 3-AAAAA. Savannah area schools are some of the best boys’ basketball programs in the state, especially Savannah and Beach. However, their other teams are simply drilled. It makes me wonder why all programs have to practically get embarassed for the sake of about 12 boys playing basketball. It just does not make logical sense.

I am happy that Coach Nix and administrators at Northside take the hundreds of other children who participate in GHSA programs and sports into consideration beyond one sport (football).

Good luck to all the teams from region 5 I’ll be routing for all of you. Looks like E.P. will be moving back down to AAAA after losing many students to North Paulding last year. Kinda hope we end up in the same region with Sequoyah as we had a pretty good rivalry started with them before we went to AAAAA. Also, I gotta keep my eyes on Griffin as that is where I graduated from. Go Bears!

Hey SportsFan31313, are the Windsor Forest fans aware of this blog? I don’t think that I have seen one post from them. This game is not a gimme, we have to make that LOOOOONG 25 hour bus ride down, and we have some injuries. I am debating if I am going to make that drive. I may stand on an exit with a sign “will work for ride to Savannah.” Of course if you are coming up you could stay at my house and I could stay at yours. Got any good stuff in the fridge? If we get by WF tonight I am looking forward to see if we can keep NSWR under 50 points. Hey good luck to ALL the teams tonight. Our prayers are with Tyler Hunter.

Collins Hill over Roswell
Roswell will have trouble recovering from last weeks loss. RB Perkins the difference.
Etowah over South Gwinnett
Breaking this one down all week. Etowah wears South down 20-17
Union Grove and Colqiutt will both win as lower seeds, but are clear cut road favorites.
Brookwood Mom – I couldn’t do it, although I think this game will be close untill the fourth quarter. Too many big play opps for Mceachern. Sorry… Go Bronco’s!

Pops: Are you making the trip to Snellville (where everybody is somebody)? Ball control will be the key for Etowah tonight for them to win. Grayson had the ball for 33 minutes in their victory over South. Ditto for Brookwood to pull the upset in Powder Springs. Agree with you about Collins Hill over Roswell. As long as the Eagles mix things up & do not rely too heavily on Perkins, they could pull off the win.

Reeze / HomeFieldAdvantage…

We EP folks are still hanging around, yep 5/5 was a bummer year but it easily could have been 7/3…The record really didn’t matter this year, as much as making the playoffs would have been nice, this years EP team just didn’t “gel” as past years teams did. Even if they had made the playoffs I am VERY afraid it would have been “One and Done” as they would have been outmatched by a VERY STRONG Grayson team!!! EAST played & lost to Grayson last year, at Grayson, Marietta is heading into a buzzsaw over there tonight…Harrison, EP, Cherokee & Marietta all could have ended up the #4 seed but any of them would have been overmatched this year.

EAST has the option of moving down to AAAA or “playing up” by staying at the AAAAA level. With the success EAST had last year and knowing how fiercely competitive our coaches are I really don’t think they will consider the AAAA option, but we’ll just have to wait and see. I know whatever they decide they will have a tremendous support for the 2010 team as all I have heard since EP was eliminated is CAN’T WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!

GO RAIDERS 2010!!!!!

As for PLAYOFF FOOTBALL tonight in Paulding County…we have our UNDEFEATED and REGION CHAMPION HIRAM HORNETS playing tonight at home against Chamblee!!
These kids beat Hillgrove, Sprayberry & Dalton IN A ROW to get to where they are…CONGRATULATIONS to them and GOOD LUCK TONIGHT!!!

I don’t believe that Bradwell Institute will stay in the Class AAAA Classfication. They will petition up I believe. There are no Schools in the area for Bradwell Institute to contend with. You will only have Brunswick, and Jenkins Of Savannah. Everywhere else will be too far to travel. The nearest will be Northside warner robins or maybe some Augusta Schools which is still about 0ne and one half to two hours away. In addition, It will leave Camden County alone as well. Even if Camden County moved over to Region 1-AAAAA which will be the closest, they still will be too far to travel, and it will be very costly. What I believe is that Everything will remain as it is currently. Some schools will play up.

SouthGARules: Unfortunately, I cant attend any Viking or Wildcat games. I live in the Philippines now. I graduated from Lowndes and was fortunate enough to play for Joe Wilson on the 1980 State Champ Team. I follow both LHS and VHS as best I can, and listen to the games on the net, whenever possible. Even though I am thousands of miles away, my heart never left Valdosta. I support both programs from afar, and for me as long as the title stays in Lowndes County, I could care less which team wins. I went to LHS, but grew up in the city and even went to Valdosta Jr High. I remember growing up and watching Nick Hyder’s ‘cat teams make us all so proud.

ROSWELL#1 Coach Barker doesn’t strike me as an indidvidual that would play a player because of politics. This player started every game this year for a reason, he gave Roswell the best chance to win, which they did until last week.The timing of this situation is not what you would want the rest of your team to endure because of your action. Number 4 is a good athlete and I hope this doesn’t put a damper on a very good season for this team. Go Hornets!!!

Great point A Fan. Just wanted to point out the fact that the qb who quit was penciled in at the begining of the season because he was a senior not because of an obvious upgrade in talent. He kid (who quit) had also been in the Roswell football program for many years as a result of his dad also being involved in roswell coaching as a “community coach”. The politics from my standpoint was playing the backup (#4) for 1 quarter rather than just staring him because he clearly was the better qb. Most defenses tried to put roswell in a 3rd and long because they knew that hickman had trouble with athleticsm and getting the ball out to it’s receivers. The 1st time Roswell went on th eroad at Lassitter got really challenged by a good team, the kid quit DURING THE GAME. Very embarrassing, but hopefully the kid can move on and there are no other issues involved which resulted in him quitting the way he did. My gut is that the team will respond well tonight. The main goal must be to stop Charles Perkins tonight; ball control offense for roswell with some play action passes; and no turnovers. Good luck tonight everybody.

I remember that ill advised prayer said by a Warner Robins Minister. I was shocked since I had just arrived in WR. To hear him say, ” God please watch over the losing team as they travel back to—-etc,etc. I was embarrassed even as a new resident to the city. It might have had something to do with me finding a home on the North side of town.

To all Valdosta Wildcat Fans haven’t you gotten enough of trash talking before the game? As if the Lowndes game wasn’t enough to shut some of you up. It’s embarrassing being a Cat fan when folk come on here and bragg about how the Cats are going to beat Newnan and when the Cats lose you never hear from them after. SportsFan31313, Bradwell can and should play AAAA. There 5 Region games can be Brunswick, Effingham County, Glynn Academy, Jenkins and South Effingham. These are the teams they played when they were AAAA in the past, minus S.E. All these are closer than Camden County. The other 5 games they should “play up” for conditioning and playoff rediness. The 1st thing that needs to happen is the dissmisal of Coach Walsh. The kids are just not responding anymore.

94 Demon, Veterans HS would be a good job for Rick Tomberlin. At some point, Houston County is going to get a real coach and the Bears are going to finally begin to live up to their promise. They are loaded with talent. It is almost inexcuseable to lose the way those guys have lost over at HoCo.

BulldawgBite: We have heard all of your Northside hating all season long. Please, go on record right now and name the team that is going to beat Northside at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. You said that Northside will lose in the quarterfinals. To who?????? Brookwood???? Brookwood is going to get on a bus and travel from Gwinnett County to Warner Robins and beat Northside at McConnell-Talbert Stadium? Are you serious?

Either you are tired tonight, you were drinking at the North Gwinnett game, or you are taking recreational drugs. Seriously. Brookwood has a history of getting big lumps in their throats ar McConnell-Talbert.

Let me spell it out to you. Northside has our worst team in about five seasons. Nonetheless, we are still going to march towards another State Championship with a starting team made up of primarily sophomores and juniors. I do not know how to spell it out to you. Northside is not going to lose to a team that road a bus for two or three hours at McConnell-Talbert.

Name the team that you believe is going to stop Northside from reaching the semifinal game. Union Grove and their lack of discipline? Brookwood? Give me a break!!!

North Gwinnett 52
Centennial 21

North receivers dropped 4 long passes in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, where the ball hit the receivers right on the hands. 3 of them were wide open for touchdowns had the receiver caught the ball.

Centennial was completely ineffective on offense until a minute to go in the first half. They swapped to an I formation with a wing and a wide receiver on the same side as the wing. North’s defense was clearly confused by this “old” offense and defenders had no idea about their responsibilities. Centennial ran a triple option out of this formation. The dive play went for 20 yards, then the QB scored on the second play as the DT went inside, the old went for the fake dive, and the CB covered the tailback for the pitch. The QB waltzed for around 40 yards for a TD.

In the 3rd quarter Centennial again ran the “I” with a wing. North stopped the dive, but again the CB took the tail back and the OLB went inside for the dive. QB got 2 long gains, and then Centennial scored when nobody covered the tailback going through the fullback’s hole. Classic “I” offense. 14 points for Centennial in 5 plays. Later in the 3rd Quarter, Centennial tried it again and again the North LB’s failed to contain the QB on the keeper in the triple option.

Basically, Centennial ran exactly the same plays they had been running from the Wing T, but North was confused about the defensive responsibilities. After coach explained it to them Centennial was stuffed in the “I”, and they never did get anything in the Wing T.

North got over the dropped passes in the second half and moved the ball at will, both on the ground and in the air. Uzomah still appears a little gimpy but the O-Line gave him plenty of time, and it just was not an issue.

Centennial simply did not have 5 DB to cover the receivers and someone was always open. If Uzmoah checked through the first 3 without an opening he pulled the ball down and gained substantial yardage on the ground.

A big D-line simply makes no difference against this offense. They will move the ball around the perimeter. If the defense spreads out, North runs blasts until the defense stacks in again. This is a pretty good team. Uzomah threw the ball on a rope 30 to 40 yards several times with pinpoint accuracy. Somebody is open on every play. There were a few “wounded ducks”, several dropped passes, and a TD that was called incomplete on a bad call where the ref was screen from the play before the receiver went out. None of it mattered.

The Sit in the Corner because your Region is Suspect Award goes to teams from Region 4-AAAAA and Region 5-AAAAA. Both regions went 1-3 in the first round of the playoffs. We all know that Region 3-AAAAA went 1-3 as well. The difference is most of Region 3-AAAAA is playing up.

Region 1-AAAAA, Region 8-AAAAA both went 3-1. While North Gwinnett loves to beat their chests, Region 7-AAAAA went 2-2.

The Round of 16 is set. This is going to be fun. Good luck to everyone next week.

Jcwfalcon: If Northside plays Grayson, the location of the game is not predetermined. Both teams are top seeds from their region. Therefore, the game is decided by a coin toss. Northside has regularly won those coin tosses. How, I do not know. I have always believed it was divine intervention. Grayson may have to travel to McConnell-Talbert. If the seeds are the same, it is decided by a coin toss.

Big J: Yes, I am going on record. Union Grove is a dead team walking! It is officially “Get Your Basketball Shoes” week at Union Grove High School. Football season is over. The trip from Union Grove High School to McConnell-Talbert Stadium on South Davis Drive in Warner Robins is UG’s Green Mile. UG is on death row.

Northside is not losing to a metro Atlanta program at the MAC. I do not mean to disrespect Union Grove. I am sure there are some fine players there. However, you can forget about UG beating our Eagles at the MAC. Period

yes 94 demon we got killed by lowndes that year. they were a better team than us. period. we had an easy bracket and crusied through it. we had to go to lowndes which i think could be the toughest place to play in for high school and lost badly. our high powered offense sputtered behind our over rated qb mikey tamburo. his performance was awful. he could not throw in the rain period whether it was at lowndes or anywhere we always lost in the rain because he could not throw it. even if it hadnt been raining though lowndes was a better team that year. and that was 2 years ago. both teams could very well play in 2 weeks and it should be a good game if it does happen

ENR , I read your halftime post on the Eagles..The last 4 min of the 1st the Eagles had a couple mistakes made ,allowing a 95 yd kick off return and a bad pass interference call on the Eagles hich set up the TD for Chapel hill ,but there wasn’t any doubt about the outcome , Chapel Hill had -16 yards on the ground at break…..The Eagles came out to play in the 2nd and wrapped it up….Masteller is back ,I think we’ll see more of him throwing the ball in the playoffs , he’s gonna have to spell Van Brunt on some plays ,much better passer……Surprised ,but okay with MaCeachern going down ,1st 3 rounds at the Mac now!

And why all the hate for Peachtree Ridge? Can’t stomach a program that’s gone 10-2-1 in the playoffs and shared a championship in just 7 years of existence? Name another team besides Valdosta (south GA), Lincoln Co. (east GA) or Buford (north GA) that has averaged a championship every 7 years. Maybe you just can’t wrap your head around the fact that schools in every part of the state can play quality football.
And enough of that “silver spoon” crap; this isn’t a class issue, this is football. I would bet that almost all public schools have players that come from a variety of different backgrounds, and instead of touting that fact, they just go out and play like everyone else.

I was talking with a hard core football guy at the Grayson game tonight about about traveling and a coin toss. He said that since Grayson was both the number 1 seed AND undefeated that everyone would have to come to us. NSWR, Lowndes, Camdem, etc all have at least one loss. I don’t know and am not sure where to look if up. If anyone knows how that would work, I would love to hear it.

Help me out Grayson fans. Everytime I watch Grayson do they play to just beat their opponent? Watching Grayson play they only allow very low time of possesion and first downs. They only give up scores on big plays and special teams. Forget running on them. Just wondering how far that will take them.

I don’t know what to think about our game tonight. Marietta played very well! I know the question I posed earlier about playing a strong end of season vs an easy end of season was answered. We did not look sharp tonight at all. Marietta scored on a kick off return for a touchdown by blowing through our guys and then winning the footrace. Their other score was following a long pass where they didn’t win the footrace and they were then able to go ahead and punch the ball in. The rest of the night, we pretty well contained them. Ean broke a couple of long runs even with his shoulder injured. The offensive time of possesion was lopsided in our favor again.

Normally I agree with not running the score up excessively but I really think our clock managment tonight stunk! I have to wonder if all those games of not pushing hard are coming back to haunt us. I realize when we were up 21-7 that we just were then grinding out the yardage and controlling the clock but darn!

End result is we won and move on to the next round. Maybe this was our wake-up game that other teams’ single loss for the season provided. I sure hope so. I don’t want to seem like I am dwn on the team because I’m not. Still planning on see y’all at the Dome!

Went to Newnan-Valdosta tonight. Not very impressed with Newnan in 1st half, especially on offense. Defensively, very good. Valdosta scored on a kick return & on a short field after Newnan held inside their 5 yard line. Valdosta started that possession on the Newnan 38 & kicked a FG.
Alec gets all the attention, but Zander is no slouch.

It just kills me how Grady gets ignored by the Atlanta media. It’s right here in the middle of the city with an exceptional team this year, yet its games rarely get any coverage. Teams that are five hours away from Atlanta get more press in the Atlanta paper than Grady, which is smack dab in the middle of the city. What’s up with that?

jcwfalcon, I understand what you are saying based on your perceptions but it might surprise you to learn that almost 46% of Gwinnett students receive free or reduced price lunches. See http://app.doe.k12.ga.us/ows-bin/owa/fte_pack_frl001_public.display_proc for the state’s figures. I don’t deny that it is probably true for the people that you have been with but please don’t paint the entire county with the same brush. Gwinnett County is the most diverse county in the state. I think it might be more that your comment “For many of them, this is it. Its all they do.” is very true. I have long said that there is so much to do in the metro area that football competes with other activities more than perhaps in the smaller population areas.

89viking: Well in calculating my 7 year average, I assumed that you would consider Lowndes and the old Lowndes County (which was around before the 70s, I believe) as the same school. However, my point was not meant to be a jab at Lowndes or any south GA team, but to show that schools from all over the state have found success in football. And please don’t believe I would try to make a generalization about the intelligence level of folks in other parts of the state. I’m pretty sure “jeetyet” and “lost as a ball in tall grass” mean the same thing to me as they do to you

Fred- I think I made the mistake of confusing Alpharetta for Gwinnett. As you get closer to 85, it is very different and more diverse. Right there in the middle of 400 north though, it is a different world.

TCC wins tonight 15-8!! This was a sloppy offensive effort by TCC–we had 3 or 4 fumbles! Again, the defense was our strength. Can’t keep fumbling and expect to win in the playoffs—I thought we would blow these guys out!!! Well Yellow Jackets fans, lets hope we got this dropping the ball stuff out of our system. the number one region in the state prove that the ajc was right in it’s ranking of the regions in the state. now if there was a overall ranking. will 1=aa be the number one or number two region. the result of the first round is four games===four wins. on to round two. if there was a reward for the best region; when or where will the reward be given?

jcw, Alpharetta is in North Fulton County and they do not have a team in the playoffs. I can only speak for a few of the Gwinnett schools. The North Gwinnett district goes from McMansions to single wides. I don’t think Buford has any McMansions and plenty of single wides. P Ridge has some pretty posh digs, but plenty of plain “folks” also. Grayson is closer to Conyers than it is to Alpharetta.

I sure could have used one of those “college funds” when I put myself through college and graduate school, but instead I earned some scholarship money and worked night shift at a bank. It would have been nice to have a “college fund” for my 2 kids in college. Where can I get one of those? Instead my daughter earned 2 800’s on her SATs and finished 1st in fencing in the State of Georgia. She located a couple scholarships herself and I am paying less for her to go to the #1 rated liberal arts college in America than I would if she went to UGA. My other son works nights and will finish in 3 years in order to reduce costs.

But there may be a difference. Personally, we moved to Gwinnett because they appear to have the “best” school system in Georgia, and I wanted my kids to get a decent public education.

By all accounts Georgia is among the top 5 football states in the nation, but among the bottom 5 in education. I think that is primarily because we “care” more about football than education in Georgia – not because Georgians are stupid. In Gwinnett, we also care about education, in addition to football.

Frankly, I think this board should be about football. And I wish you would keep to yourself with your inaccurate ideas about silver spoons, luxury cars, and college funds. If you really want to get into differences in attitudes about education, it will NOT turn out well.

I am more than happy to discuss the awesome football being played all over the state. The rest of it should be discussed at some level, but not here.

Trmendous game lst night between roswell and collins hill. Hated to see either team lose; but roswell made just enough plays in overtime to win the game. Roswell controlled the 1st half but collins hill made 2nd half adjustments especially to thier passing game and dominated roswell in the 2nd half. Roswell run defense was very good against Charle s Perkins, but its pass defense was not very good again. Perkins is an outstanding running back and Georgia Tech should be glad to be getting him. Collins hill bigger wr’s bothered Roswell’s smaller defensive secondary the entire night. Roswell qb also played an outstanding game in that it was his 1st start and clearly showed that the offense is better with him at qb; #80 at wr for roswell was dominant all night and collins hill had no answer for him. I believe that he is committed to Vanderbilt. Great win for Roswell but I hated to see the faces of the collins hill players after such a hard fought game / loss.

I really hope Coach Ballard has more faith in his QB and receivers next game. GET OFF THE RUNNING GAME AND THROW THE BALL. The Lombardo kid has an arm on him, why has he been disallowed to use it for the last few games??? It was destined for Peachtree Ridge to advance because they screwed themselves over AGAIN otherwise. Newsflash coach: THE OTHER TEAM WATCHES FILM. Why isn’t this guy comprehending that??? Too many STUPID mistakes in the coaching vs. a very average Kell team. No way they will make the Dome again with dumb mistakes on behalf of the coaching staff. I really feel for those players, their coaches are determined to have them sit this one out.

Big j, did you go to the game last night. I am sorry that our starting QB got hurt and is out but uh oh, our new one can run. As bad as we looked on offense last week we made up for it last night. Donovan Johnson and T.J. looked really good. Good job O-line. Some freshmen got playing time. Good job Coach on getting the guys ready for this week.
Windsor Forest, you have to get behind your team, make some noise and have a better turn-out for a PLAYOFF game. I guarantee you if you had played in the GROVE we would have showed you how to make some noise. GO GROVE!!!!!!!

Pemberton was hurt but came back in and took some shots but got up fine, even had about a 70 yard run, didnt see champaign limping but i just have a feeling conn didnt wanna put any unneccesary plays on film for roswell. it seemed they played to not lose rather than to win– GS–VERY CONCISE AND ACCURATE OBSERVATION !

AAAAA’s Regions 1,2, and 8 went 3 – 1 last night. Regions 6 and 7 went 2 – 2. Regions 3, 4, and 5 (did I say “5″ ?, Really?) went 1 – 3. Good thing Woodstock has a Region 1 “flavor” (head coach Mike O’Brien from Valdosta) or Region 5 may have been skunked.

Some observation tidbits:

In 5-A next week all the games in the right side of the bracket will be played with the “Upset Alert” warning.

Camden, defensding State Champions and Number 1 seed will host Lowndes, a number 2 seed. Should that not make Camden the favorite? Lowndes might just pull off an “Upset” here.

South Gwinnett finished number 2 Seed from Region 8 and has played really tough and good football. Can Lassiter with their high powered offense and give up 30 to 40 points a game defense win? I see an “Upset” here also.

Stephenson will be on “upset Alert” against Colquitt County. And North Gwinnett better not overlook a Region 1-AAAAA flavored Woodstock, or it too will taste the “Upset” koolaid.

Not much of a possiblity of an “Upset” this week on the left side of the bracket, but Peachtree Ridge vs Brookwood will be a good game for “Atlanta standards”, as will Roswell vs Grayson.

Union Grove, some of you are my friends. But take my advice that some of my Lowndes friends tried to give Peachtree Ridge when they came down here in September. DON’T GET OFF THE BUS. TAKE THE FORFEIT AND SAVE THE BUTT WHOOPING!

Newnan vs MLk ? Like two mules fighting through a barbed wire fence over a turnip. Who cares, neither get past the 1/4 finals.

AVikingFan, I got a good laugh out of the two mules. Man I am excited and absolutely looking forward to NSWR. We might get beat but won’t the whole football and playoff environment be exciting and we aren’t Peachtree Ridge. I think someone forgot to tell the Windsor Forest fans that last night was a playoff game.
We are going to the dome even if we have to purchase tickets. Our defense played good last night but not up to their usual level. We made some changes on offense and well, I think the score speaks for itself.
I will disagree with you on your prediction for Stephenson. Colquitt will be hard pressed to score on Stephenson’s defense. There has been talk about some of the tough defenses in the state and I am telling you that Stephenson and MLK are right up there with them.

For inthatrenches some thought on the Lowndes/East Coweta game.
East Coweta obviously came to win and left it all on the field.
They have a very good running back #1 who I would love to see running behind Lowndes offensive line out of the Wing position. He did not need much of a hole to make something happen. Qback play was also pretty good. Not a bad thrower and also good running the ball.

Lowndes first posession of the game I saw something I have never seen in all my years of watching football.

E. Coweta on both of the first 2 defensive plays of the game tried to defend Lowndes with only 10 men on the field. Also on the point after attempt. Somebody on the EC sidelines definitely did not have their heads in the game and for that matter it seems the defense would have noticed also. I’ve seen a one play mistake like that before but for 3 straight plays!

Not to take any thing from E.C. but Lowndes probably played the worst first half of football I have seen them play this year. Penalties on top of penalties. One turnover. Just a lack of intensity. A little like the first half of the Northside game, but worse.

The second half was a total different story as evidenced by the final score.

Lowndes must bring the intensity next week from the beginning of the game or it will be tough to beat Camden on the road.

Get off the bus ready to play guys….lets go!!!

This Lowndes team has the talent (as evidenced by many scores they have been putting up this year) to be Lowndes best team “ever”. They also seem to be able to underachieve at a drastic measure at times….that last part can be concerning.

Can someone explain this:

Why is Camden County playing the #2 seed from Region 1 in the second round 2 years in a row?

If the brackets were rotated properly they should be facing the # 3 seed from region 1.

This type of repeat matchup is not supposed to happen.

Quinn of the Ridge – Go back to last year when for 7 or 8 games I was the only poster on any of these blogs who spoke highly of PeaRidge. My remark to Union Grove was in jest. Some of their fans have been avid Lowndes boosters. Forget the region 1 thing, I hope UG pulls off an upset next week. But I don’t see it happening. I do see South Gwinnett beating Lassiter’s Hoover offense and give up a million points a game defense.

As far as the poster who said Colquitt hasn’t faced a defense like Stephenson has. I challenge that sincerely. Lowndes, Northside, and Warner Robins all have top notch defenses. Colquitt’s Meat Packers may make sausage out of Stephenson’s so-called athletes.

Woodstock with its 1-AAAAA flavored coaching staff might also pull off an upset against North Gwinnett.

And last but not least, lil ole Lowndes might just go ON THE ROAD and upset defending state champion and number one seed Camden.

Thanks AVikingFan, I get a little sensitive about hearing about the Lowndes game almost three months later. It’s not a happy memory, I agree Woodstock is an underrated team coached by a great Mike O’Brien, and could very likely upset NG. I’ve got the Vikings over Camden, I honestly believe Lowndes is the best team in the state, and I’ve got them winning state this year, but who knows, the field is wide open this year. (Since when am I such a Region 1 lover?)

Yo, thanks for the update on what went on with Lowndes last night, we were wondering why the game was so tight the first half. That’s the mark of a good team and coaching staff to go in and adjust at halftime. There also could have been a little looking ahead by the players to a possible upcoming game with Camden. That’s what I was worried about at the Camden game, they might have been looking ahead to a possible matchup with Lowndes instead of focusing on Newton. Newton has a scrappy team and I give them credit they never backed down and played hard until the end. Next week game should be a good one and I don’t think anyone has to worry about either team not being ready to play this game, hopefully it will be like those two battles back in 03. It’s just a shame one of us will be done after Friday night.

Ware county gators defense gone crush the undefeated griffin bears football team they are nicknamed tha hit squad because they attack anybody that tries to get in their way.The offense is led by jimmy wilkins the speedy quarterback that looks a lot like philadelphia eagle’s michael vick.He is a good athlete that makes big plays for his team when they need them.The running back bernard robertson and fullback bryant hayman are the real truth they are two big backs that run with a lot of power to score touchdowns.The other teams usally have a hard time maintaining with these two backs.The Griffin bears maybe 11-0 now but when dem gators come in town the record is going to be 11-1 at the end. Come on now. Clarke Central barely beat Mays. yal gave up a 21-7 lead to win 28-31. I still congratulate u on the win, but to say your going to give SWD a close one is pushing it. SWD is alot better than Mays this year. I cant say much about the Rockdale-Hiram game but I hope Hiram pulls it out. And Marist is going to win against apalachee, who also barely beat the #4 seed 24-27.

What year did you graduate from Griffin? Class of ‘82 here. I remember the bear scoreboard that growled and blew smoke. And the bear paws painted on the road to the stadium. My frosh, soph, and jr. classes were some of the best teams Griffin ever had. NFL talent back then. They’ve apparently gotten that kind of talent again lately.

Close game last night for Hiram. They were the opposite of what they usually do. They came out in the first half and just dominated and at half time it was 21-7. But we came out in the second half and made some mistakes. But we didnt let Chamblee counter those mistakes. Great play by the defense and big plays from the offense are why Hiram is going to the second round. Rockdale county be ready. HHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSS

You are in for a RUDE awakening if you think you can come to the Mighty Bears Den and Crush ANYTHING (except your own peanuts you dug up from your front yard). Our Defense is DEVASTATING. Are you kidding me? You are critical of me for suggesting that Northside beats dancing band programs. I hope you are aware that in the state of Georgia bands outside of metro Atlanta (DeKalb County, Clayton County, and south Fulton County) dance at halftime. I have my own opinions about these high school bands mimicking college bands, especially the little girls dancing like strippers. That, of course, is are my opinions.

It is not an opinion statement to say that Northside usually destorys these types of programs. This has happened for years. Truth be told, your own deep seeded beliefs have already exposed themselves. You said that you just want people to say that Union Grove is a good team, win or lose. You might as well say, I do not believe in UG. Neither do I.

You should come down to Warner Robins. A program like Union Grove does not regularly get an opportunity to play in a stadium with such rich history. State Championships have been won on that field. National Championships have been won on that field. Future NFL players have played on that field. Future Hall of Fame coaches have coached great teams on that field. Big J, you should bring you entire family to McConnell-Talbert. Take pictures. Write a journal of your thoughts and emotions. It is Northside High School in Warner Robins, GA. It is the MAC. It is special.

We destroy dancing bands. Those little girls are going to shake themselves into the turf at halftime. Our Eagles will shake the UG football team into the turf before and after the half.

Im really getting tired of this dancing band thing. Its really irritating me. ENR,would you like to explain to me exactly what that has to do with the football team? Thats just how certain schools cheer their teams on. We have a good time at the games. Maybe if you werent so worried about everybody else’s bands, then you would still be undefeated. Yes our season is over but it has nothing to do with the fact that we have a dancing band. Stephenson probably has one of the best “dancing bands” in the state and their undefeated. whats your theory on that?

Big J: Which one of the Union Grove football players are going to go out and help Coach Russ Atkins win soe basketball games? The Wolverines of Union Grove only won 5 games last basketball season and only 3 the year before that. Come on, Big J. You guys need to send some of the guys over and help make the UG basketball team competitive.

Our band does anything but dance, ENR you obviously don’t know anything about us. Our band is EXTREMELY conservative. I have to tell you that I really enjoyed Redan’s band when we played them. ENR, NSWR may beat us but they will line up 11 kids against our 11 kids. Win or lose I will enjoy this week. Let me tell you my friend, if GOD reaches down from the heavens and helps us win this game I won’t be on this post knocking your team.
UG is not a State championship team but we are a good team. Furthermore, after losing so many students to Woodland I think we have done pretty well and that is with injuries this year. Aren’t you supposed to get a new school? Will see how that affects NSWR. You take this S%$# way too far. This is high school football played by kids for the enjoyment of all. I think we have way more to worry about with our Country and economy. We should all be proud that Georgia as a whole produces some of the finest football players in the Nation. Win or lose Friday night we will walk out of your hallowed stadium with our heads up.

MHSRaider: Why are you guys so sensitive about your dancing bands? Does not Union Grove have a dancing band? Aren’t the girls in those bands dressed similar to a stripper? Did I say something that was not true? I have not requested that schools that choose to dress 14 year old girls like strippers to change what they do. Explain to me why you are irritated and sensitive?

Do me a favor. Name a school who has a dancing band that has beat Northside in the past decade…you can go back two decades. Name just one, MHSRaider. It is a matter of FACT that Northside usually beats programs that have dancing bands. Union Grove is similar to other dancing band programs in the manner that they are going to get hammered at McConnell-Talbert by Northside.

Heck MHSRaider, it does not matter if it is Mays, Tucker, Southwest-Macon, Beach-Savannah, or Union Grove. The link between these programs is a band that takes up the entire 20 minute halftime…will not get off of the field… and keeps dancing as their program is getting destroyed. There is another link. They never beat Northside.

By the way, MHSRaider, we have a very good time at our games too. Northside is 118-13 since the turn of the century. Don’t take it personally. I did not believe Lowndes County would beat our young Eagles at the MAC and I am certain that Union Grove will not beat us either. Our program has won 10 or more games for twelve straight years. We have more wins than any large school in the state of Georgia (AAA, AAAA, or AAAAA). We have more playoff wins than any program in the entire state of Georgia, not named Valdosta. Trust me. We have lots of fun at our games.

It is not personal. We are going to crack Union Grove. Then, we are going to rip those silver spoons out of the mouths of those trust fund babies posing as a football team at Peachtree Ridge. Maybe Mays HS can get a scrimmage with our JV team. It may be competitive. Bring your band. Just dress those little girls for us. Please.

ENR , I am an Eagle fan and I am with you as far as Northside …….But you really need to cool it with the dancing band BS……..The Directors, kids and parents put a lot of effort in what they are doing rather you appreciate their efforts or not……….”Dancing bands” as you call them are part of the African American culture across the country in predominately African American Middle Schools ,High Schools and University’s and in some cases the Patrons pay not to see the Football game ,instead the Half time show…….You are from the Warner Robins area , Bands from Fort Valley , Albany State , High schools North Clayton and Central Macon have all performed in this area or at the Mac to standing ovations…….

Cal509 get back with us when you know the facts. Northside score was 10-7 against Lowndes. Valdosta score was like 16-13 against Northside. The Lowndes-Valdosta game was a blow out! We played 2nd Squad after 3rd quarter! Newnan didn’t do anything spectacular by beating Valdosta. Lowndes beat Valdosta 57-15. So, what your point here?

I know I’m a little late jumping into the conversation, but I want to address a question that was asked and answered way back around 6:00 pm on Thursday.

I hate to say it, but I think BROOKWOOD MOM is wrong on this one. Brookwood and Parkview have fallen off in the last few years and I don’t think either school will ever come back to the level they once were. Both schools will probably continue to win more than they lose as long as the current coaching staffs remain in place, and both may pop back up in the Top 10 from time to time, but neither will be able match the success they had over the past 15 – 20 years.

The main reason for the drop off is demographics. The growth in Gwinnett County started moving north and east several years ago (back when there was such thing as growth), starting with Collins Hill and Grayson and moving on to Peachtree Ridge, Mill Creek, etc. All of those schools started out using the same blueprint for building a program and high expectations that Brookwood established in the late 1980’s and Parkview adopted in the early 1990’s.

The population growth and relative affluence in those areas, combined with the example set by Brookwood and Parkview, helped these programs bypass the usual slow building phase and quickly jump into the mix with other top programs in the state. Almost from the beginning, they had money, top quality facilities, large populations, high expectations, plenty of enthusiasm, and athletes who had grown up competing with players from Brookwood, Parkview, etc. in local youth leagues. A few of the older schools like North Gwinnett experienced similar population surges, and when they put quality coaches in place they were able to compete at a higher level than ever before.

While all the growth was happening in other parts of the county, the growth around Brookwood and Parkview started to slow down. There’s not a whole lot of room left to build new subdivisions in either of those school districts and most of the new subdivisions that were built in the last few years before the housing market bust contained smaller houses that were crammed into the little remaining spaces that were left. Even though those houses were still expensive by logical standards, many of the new buyers were a little less affluent than many who had moved to the area over the previous 10 – 15 years. Some residents from the area continued the pattern that previously brought them to Brookwood and Parkview, and followed the growth to new houses in the northern and eastern parts of the county. The end result was a small decline in the relative affluence in the area and an end of the rapid growth that had helped the schools rise to the top.

In addition to the changing demographics in the area, a change in attitude and expectations has been a factor in Brookwood and Parkview’s fall from the elite. The level of excitement in the general community isn’t the same as it was when both schools were on their way to the top. Where once it seemed that everyone was asking, “How can we make it bigger and better?” the question started to become, “What’s in it for me?” Realistically speaking, there wasn’t much left to do to make things bigger and better. Both schools reached a point where they had almost everything they could ever want. As the old people who had contributed to the growth of the programs moved on, many of the people who entered the programs for the first time had no idea of what it took for the schools to reach the levels they had attained. Some just thought everything should be handed to them. Others just didn’t see the need to do as much since both schools seemed to have so much. (By the way, I know there are plenty of people at both schools working just as hard as anyone ever has to keep things going. I’m talking in general terms here and I’m not trying to question the commitment level of everyone involved.)

Like the changing enthusiasm level for the Atlanta Braves, from fanatical excitement in 1991 to apathy near the end of their 14 year run of division titles, the enthusiasm level in the communities surrounding Brookwood and Parkview started to decline as people began to take success for granted. In the middle of the 1990’s it was hard to even find a seat at a home game for either school. In the last several years, I could have found enough room to park my car in the bleachers for most games. Sometimes I there was enough empty space that I could have brought my whole house along without crowding anybody. Where once it seemed that everyone in the county wanted to watch Brookwood beat Duluth, or Parkview defeat Meadowcreek, the long run of success has spoiled people. Everyone figures they’ll just wait and show up in the playoffs to see Brookwood vs. Valdosta or Parkview vs. Lowndes. Unfortunately, those matchups aren’t happening as often anymore and will probably become more infrequent in the future.

I’m sure that’s more analysis and opinion than anyone is interested in, but there you have it. Now, back to football:

Congratulations Broncos on an important win over McEachern! Now it’s time to show the youngsters at P’tree Ridge that the King hasn’t left the building quite yet.

Reeze: I do not need a dissertation about African American culture. I am a little lost about what part of the African American culture encourages 14, 15, & 16 year old girls to dress like strippers as a part of a school sponsored actvity like band. Can someone explain what part of African-American culture includes the sexual exploitation of teenage girls in the name of a halftime show. It is a borderline joke that people hide behind “African-American culture” in the name of doing something that is flat out wrong and distasteful.

Selling sex is not a part of African-American culture. People alow high school kids to imitate rap videos and wonder why our schools start looking like the people in those videos. I will NEVER forget the way that those little girls were on the Georgia Dome ground from Tucker High School a couple of years ago. I did not know if I was at a GHSA activity or at Magic City. Reeze, name one dancing band high school that has beat Northside HS in the past decade. It just does not happen. Period!

I am not afraid to say that I thoroughly enjoy college bands like Florida A&M, Jackson State, Southern, etc. I also know that the girls that make up those dance teams are adult women. On the other hand, high school girls should NEVER behave in that manner in a school function. That is my opinion. I find it shocking to believe that any person can say that what happens with adults should happen with teenage high school girls in the name of African-American culture.

African-American culture does not and should not celebrate the sexual exploitation of teenage girls under any circumstances. Many of the bands in our state do just that. It is nothing short of sexual exploitation (only girls, very attractive ones). I have even seen people with binoculars looking onto the field. It is sickening!!! For a matter of fact, many schools do not even allow songs with any profanity to be played…let alone teenage girls dressed like strippers and dancing on a field to them. It is sad that people promote it.

What happens at halftime of many schools in Georgia and other places is far from African American history, Reeze. African-American history is not little girls dressed like strippers. Period.

OK, Go UG! I am sorry that I hurt your feelings. I am certainly sorry if you were not the UG poster talking about beating MLK & Stephenson. You know which one it was. Go UG! it would be helpful for good athletes on the football team go out to purchase some basketball shoes and join Coach Russ Atkins & the Wolverine basketball program. It is officially basketball season in seven days. It has nothing to do with this trash talking blog. It is what happens at the MAC against Northside. You already know and I know you do.

I believe that Stephenson and maybe MLK is going to shock some people this season. Stephenson is scary athletic and they get no respect. I am happy they are not in the same bracket as Northside. It is ironic that so many people came down on Stephenson for losing to Coffee last season. Valdosta led Newnan before falling to the Cougars and Region 1-AAAAA came away 3-1. Last season, Region 1-AAAAA went 4-0 in the 1st Round. Posters here and the AJC painted the Stephenson/MLK region as the worst in AAAAA. Let’s see how people evaluate Region 4-AAAAA after last night or Region 5-AAAAA. My guess is the evaluation will be somewhat different.

Come on guys this is getting out of hand. We all can support our teams and have a little fun braggin on our wins but let’s keep it clean and respectful. All we do is blog but our boys get the hard part of going out and actually playing the game. And so does the band. Our band works just as hard as our football boys does and I’m sure the other bands do too so we don’t need to be putting others down. We all have some great programs. We all should be proud to be in the playoffs with an opportunity to win it all. Nobody knows who’s gonna win so let’s just appreciate being here. Many teams are at home right now. We aren’t. So why are we blasting each other so hard? I apologize to the Newnan bloggers. We all should be proud of our Vikings, Cougars, Eagles, Broncos, Bulldogs,Rams, etc. Y’all get my point!

Grayram: Why are you jumping on the Peachtree Ridge bandwagon all of a sudden. Oh…I see. If Northside advances to the semifinals, that means that Grayson will have to face our young Eagles. Of course, Grayson has nothing to worry about. Northside is the youngest team still standing in AAAAA football. Surely, Grayson is not going to lose to a young team like Northside.

Boy, I guess I would become a Union Grove/Brookwood/Peachtree Ridge fan if I were from Grayson too. Poor Grayson. I anca see it now. Grayson traveling to McConnell-Talbert Stadium in Warner Robins, GA. That, my friend, is a trip that no program welcomes.

Let me help you out Grayram. Peachtree Ridge is very different than Grayson. The kids at P-Ridge are soft. They will not get on a bus and travel three hours and beat anyone south of the Gnat line that is good. Those kids are used to flying in private jets and helicopters. Forget about joining Todd Holcomb and sporting those Peachtree Ridge pom-poms.

While you are worrying about you Northside hosts in the quarterfinals, you may find yourself on the road at Newnan. A coin toss will determine whether the game is at Newnan or Grayson. I will tell you. It is far from easy to win at Newnan. Good luck. I am not a badnwagon fan, like you.

Topper: Lowndes County at Camden County is clearly a real candidate for the Game of the Year in the GHSA. I hope the AJC highlights this game for the clash of titans that it really is. I have great respect for Camden County. They are the defending State Champions and deserve our respect.

However, we all know that the Wildcats are rebuilding. Lowndes County is loaded with talent. I believe that Lowndes County is going to win big…real big. The Wildcats may get Peachtree Ridged (or Valdosted or Colquitt Countied or you pick the team that the Vikings ran the score up on) by Lowndes County.

He is a VETERAN who fought for this country & allows people like you & others the freedom to express our views. What a lot of people are tired of is your constant beating over the head about NSWR & how they are God’s gift to Georgia High Schools. There is no doubt NSWR is a fine school & a fine program, you don’t need to remind us ad nauseam about it. Even your fellow NSWR alumni take you to task as well.
