Great game between Lowndes and Camden. I hope Camden goes all the way. A very classy team and very good team sportsmanship. Lowndes made too many mistakes and they were without 2 great players in Jorden Black and Tyler Hunter. Hunter will be back. He is a great player, just ask the players from Peachtree Ridge. Good luck Camden County.

olesarge,

There is only one School in Glynn County that will be in AAAA, and that's Brunswick. I would be surprised if Bradwell stayed in AAAA. They will petition to play up sense the enrollment is so close to the new enrollment size of AAAAA. Bradwell would have had about 3500 students had they not build a new school. In addition, Bradwell would have to travel too far to play true class AAAA schools. They will request to play up, I strongly believe.

SouthGeorgiaRules: This ole Southsider is heading up to Commerce Town in North Georgia to watch the Commerce Tigers take on the Landmark Christian War Eagles. Coach Ray Lamb built a powerhouse at Commerce High three or four decades ago, and I think that his son followed him (like the situation with Coach Walker and his son at Sandy Creek in Fayette). This will be a hard-srapping Single A football, with both teams being 6 and 4 and trying to stay in the hunt. Whatever teams stays in the hunt will be considered a cinderella story if it goes all...the...way, eh? Another group of Tigers will be about 30 miles south, taking on the Red & Black Bulldogs. Richt and Chizik (sp?)...both need a win very badly. Ray Lamb had a good running back in the 1980s named Allen (can anyone remember his first name?). He starred at Clemson under...was it Charley Pell or Danny Ford? Landmark Christian had a big lineman who started for Alabama three or four years ago. Landmark Christian has won its last three games in a row to finish strong. Single A has some interested games, but the schools are so small that they do not have the numbers to have very strong and fast kids in every position. They have a smaller number of students from which to choose. For example, Landmark beat Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy (SACA) a couple of weeks ago. This same SACA is where Dwight Howard of the NBA played. Herschel Walker, Garrison Hearst, Champ Bailey, Washaun Ealey, et al., all played for Single A schools. The games are still fun to watch. In 1949, my father coached Division C (which is now Single A in Georgia) basketball in South Georgia before moving on to AAA (now AAAAA in Georgia) in 1950 to coach football, basketball, and track. Several of his players on his Division C team in South Georgia went on to have very successful careers in business and so forth. One of his players was the key person founding Great Atlanta Christian (GAC) School in Lilburn. GAC is a powerhouse and now plays at the Division AA level like rival Buford. GAC has produced some good fullbacks for the Bulldogs. Gotta run and get ready for my trek to Commerce. Perhaps it is Landmark in an upset. I'll let you know. It will be a real cat fight in Newnantown tonight! The Cats of Valdosta and the Hometown Cougars!

Enough Region 1-AAAAA talk. Since 2000, when AAAAA started, there has been 1 main stay from the self proclaimed "SEC" of High School Football in GA, that's Lowndes. Here are the champions: Parkview- 2000,2001,2002.
Camden-2003. Lowndes-2004,2005. PTRG/Roswell-2006. Lowndes-2007. Camden-2008. Northside has never won in region AAAAA nor has Warner Robins. What does this mean, the facts speak for themselves, the only team in 1-AAAAA that has room to talk is Lowndes. The rest have not proven themselves against the playoff competiton of 5A football. Titles only count where you are playing at now, not where you were. Until someone other than Lowndes win a title from 1-AAAAA, the talent level of those teams are no better than another region. Since 2000, Lowndes and Camden have been holding up SouthGa football in 5-A, those are the facts, that other stuff is just the filling. So 1-AAAAA there is your challenge, don't ride AAAA-AAA-AA championships,Valdosta(AAAA-AAA-AA-A) Northside(AAAA) Warner Robins(AAAA-AAA) Colquit(AAAA) Tift(AAAA). What do you have to show in AAAAA? Just a thought.

Southside High School Observer: I believe John Bond played for Emory Bellard at MSU. I remember him being an option QB for the Maroon Bulldogs. From what a friend that was at MSU at the time, young Mr. Bond loved the nightlife. However, I'm sure he had to get out of Starkville to really experience it. LOL. BTW, which game are you going to be tonight?

HomeFieldAdvantage: Right you are! I am getting old. I do remember now that John Bond played at MSU. I remembered his name, and I remembered that he was from Valdosta. Did he play for Jackie Sherrill? Hey Wolverine2Blazer, I was actually struggling with that this morning...was it Creekside or Creekview? You are right. I just write my ramblings off the top of my head, and I love you guys correcting my inaccuracies! This is great. I learn something and refine stuff in my rusty head! Thanks guys! Can anyone tell me who was the HUGE running back for Tift County in the 1967 football season? (This was before court-ordered desegregation.) The answer: Big Earl Anderson. He was an African American kid the size and physique of Herschel Robinson and was also the dominant running back in the old Region 1-AAA. Who was the defensive back/returner recruited by UGA out of Joneboro in 1977? He was coached at Jonesboro by former Wally Butts's pupil, Weyman Sellers. Coach Sellers also coached Fran Tarkenton at the old Athens High School (now Clarke Central). This guy went on to become First Team All American on UGA's 1980 National Champions. The answer: Scott Woerner.

SportsFan31313, you don't think they would be grouped with the schools in Glynn County, but then again with the changes being made, those schools would have to move to a new region as well since both Wayne and Ware might drop down. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Good luck tomorrow night and dress warm.

olesarge,

I don't believe that Bradwell Institute will be dropping down. Reason is that in Class AAAA, they would have to travel too far to play teams in that Classification. They will request to play up. The majority of the teams near Bradwell are AAA, and AA teams.

Sgt Chris, if a player decides to quit any team wants to play for another school, the only way that is possible is his legal guardian resides in the area where he will be attending school. I just had this dicussion with an AD today and he stated as long as the parents live in the area of the school he would be eligable to play.

spwhite, that's what I've been told and of course I said it was a rumor and we know how that goes. I've spoken with Coach Herron and his staff many times and I know he's about THE TEAM concept, remember last year when he set some of his best players down for not following team rules. I hope this wasn't the case either.

SGT CHRIS-Camden's quarterback was a senior so he is done. olesarge- I hope thats not the real reason the qb quit. If you have ever listened to Coach Herron speak to his players you know that he always stresses TEAM effort. No one player is greater then the team. Best of luck to Gregorie.

For anyone on here with doubts about Lassiter, you won't be as skeptical after you've seen that offense. The defense isn't that great (doesn't have to be) but the offense is.

Mason is a college quarterback playing at the high school level. He may not be quite as good as Eric Zeier was at Marietta, but he's the best I've seen since and operates the spread offense to perfection.

Unless you have a couple of linemen who can really rush the passer and a bunch of DBs who play their assignments without mistakes, they're gonna score points in bunches. Mason sees the entire field, and will find the open receiver, especially when they get close to the end zone.

The best way to stop them is to try and take away their short passing game and dare Mason to throw the ball down the field. But you better have some CBs who can cover man-to-man if you do that.

Looking forward to the Collins Hill-Roswell rematch from 3 years ago. The 2 teams are going to have a hard time matching that game for pure theater.

Please stop complaining about CAMDENS Region. Thats who they tell them to play. I've been saying for years, Camden belongs in region1. It will happen soon. Then you Northside fans can see some sacred fans.

With all of these players quitting, what does that do for their eligibility if they have any left?? Can they go somewhere next year and play or what?

WOW....im tickled...AAA just became the most competitive class in GA football..a few that are reportedly dropping down to AAA: North Clayton, Statesboro, Ware County, Dalton, Sandy Creek, Westside Macon to name a few..Also can't wait to see who replaces Northside Columbus and Columbus in what I hope will remain 2-AAA..I can see both Northside Columbus and Columbus making a two class jump with the supposed influx of military coming into the Columbus area. Not saying thats gonna help them football wise..I also hope they draw the region to include Carrollton into whatever region they put LaGrange and Carver Columbus?? AA?? I really hope they play up!!

Not that it's received much attention, but Roswell's starting QB quit after last week's loss to Lassiter. His back-up (a junior) played at least a few series in every Roswell game this season and played pretty well when he was in the game. No experience behind him, however.

SGT CHRIS, Please lets not get personal, like you said its only a blog. This what makes it fun. Its not personal. I rush home from work every day to read your blog. And thats the only reason I comment on your blogs, it makes it fun, and Sir I think thats a compliment to you. Every thing is a little better when you have some-one to talk smack to. I actually agree with most of your blogs, i just like to stir it up a little, and after reading some of your blogs I thought you would be a good guy to stir it up with. So lets call it a truce, because i do not like name calling.

You can view the new classifications at www.ghsa.net. Wow SportsFan31313 I didn't think Brandwell would be dropping down. I wonder if they will apply to still play up? That leaves Camden as the only true 5A school in the region, wonder what would happen if they only allow Bradwell to play up one class? Maybe they might reconsider that super 32 they talked about a few years back. Oh yeah, nope that wasn't me wildcat fan was talking about. The rumor on the QB quiting is, his family had meeting with the Coach and wasn't pleased with him not being the full time starting QB. I guess they didn't like the answer they got and had their son quit the team, which is a shame I think. He might not have been that big, but the little man had heart and gave it his all. I know it had to be tough on him to play up to his last game and then leave his teammates. I wish him well though.

I am just excited that Greg Franklin from Marietta gets a shot at the spotlight this Friday night. This wonderful young man is having a phenominal season and deserves the recognition that comes from playing the #1 team in the state in the first round

SportsFan31313 Predictions:

Newton (6-4) at Camden County (8-2) Take Camden County: Camden County Wildcats
Dominates from the beginning to the end.

East Coweta (7-3) at Lowndes (9-1) Take Lowndes of course. Lowndes Vikings Crushes
                                                             East Coweta.

Brookwood (5-5) at McEachern (10-0) Take McEachern on a renewed football program.

Kell (6-4) at Peachtree Ridge (8-2) Take the "RIDGE" Peachtree Ridge.

Valdosta (7-3) at Newnan (10-0) Very tough game to call. Newnan is at home.
Give Newnan the benefit of the doubt.
A very hard fought game. Take Newnan.

Jenkins (4-6) at M.L. King (9-1 No a true statement about region 3-AAAAA teams
not winning a playoff game on the road. But Jenkins
of Savannah will get hammered by M.L.K. Take M.L.K.

Marietta (5-5) at Grayson (10-0) Grayson hammers Marietta. Take Grayson easily.

Collins Hill (8-2) at Roswell (9-1) Take Roswell

Centennial (5-5) at North Gwinnett (10-0) Take North Gwinette

Dacula (7-3) at Woodstock (9-1) Take Woodstock

Chapel Hill (7-3) at Northside, Warner Robins (9-1) Take Northside Warner Robins.
NSWR will take care of business as usual.

Union Grove (8-2) at Windsor Forest (6-4) Take Union Grove

North Forsyth (7-3) at Lassiter (10-0) Take Lassiter. I am still not convinced about

Newnan appears to get stronger as the game moves along. Last year, I almost froze in the Newnan stadium as I watched Newnan and Tift County play a close game until the second half when Newnan blew out Tift County. I am sure that Alec and Zander Olegtree will bring their "A" games. I don't see Newnan as a great passing team this year, but I've only seen them play once in person. But, their running game, led by Christopher Robinson, is somewhat stout. Both Ogletrees play on both sides of the line. The Newnan fans are great fans. The Cougars will be well-supported, as I know that the 'Dosta fans will travel with the Cats.

Let me tell you a true story that happened 44 years ago. Oliver Honeycutt's LaGrange Grangers were ranked No. 1 in the State and was on the top of the standing in the legendary 1-AAA, the most powerful region in Georgia year in and year out. Region 1-AAA (AAA was the highest classification in those days) was composed of LaGrange, Warner Robins (but W. R. was not that potent back in the day), Lanier of Macon, Willingham of Macon, Mark Smith (in later years) of Macon, Jordan of Columbus, Columbus High, Baker of Columbus, Tift County, Moultrie, Valdosta, and perhaps Thomasville (someone asked about Thomasville, and it may have been Region 1-AAA but I don't recall that it was). This was the 1965 football season, Valdosta desperately needed some team to either beat or tie LaGrange to put he Cats in the driver's seat in 1-AAA. Billy Atkins, who had played on Shug Jordan's Auburn team when it won the National Championship in 1957, came to Jordan Vocational High School in Columbus that year, after having played a few years in the NFL. He totally turned around a weak Jordan football program. The only two losses for Jordan that year had come from Valdosta and Moultrie (two perennial powerhouses). The boys of JVHS were about to travel to LaGrange to play the Number One Grangers. Coach Atkins received a very simple telegram from Coach Wright Bazemore and his Cats in Valdosta. It simply read: "The eyes of 'Dosta are upon you." The much-outmanned Jordan Red Jackets fought tenanciously for a 6 to 6 tie against the mighty Grangers. It was indeed celebrated like a victory. (Jordan had won just one game the year before.) The Jordan team sent a telegram to the Valdosta team. It simply read: "Happy Birthday." I think that Valdosta went on the win the State Championship in that year, 1965. Jordan finished 6-2-2 and won the coveted "Bi-City Championship" (Columbus High, Jordan of Columbus, Baker of Columbus, and Central of Phenix City, Alabama). Troy State snatched up Billy Atkins after only one year at Jordan, and after only a couple of years at Troy State (yes, it was "Troy State" back then), the Red Wave (yes, this was the original nickname at Troy, not the Trojans) went on to win the NAIA National Championship in the Crampton (or, Crompton) Bowl in 1968. Shortly after winning this national championship, Coach Atkins began coaching in the NFL. The Atkins have a son, Ace Atkins, who played for Auburn in the late 1980s and/or the early 1990s. Now, Ace Atkins, is a well-known Southern novelist, writing mostly mysteries/thrillers.

Thanks for letting this ole Southsider ramble just a little more. My prediction: Carrollton (9-1) defeats Creekside (9-1) at Grisham Field at Ben Scott Stadium or is that Ben Scott Field at Grisham Stadium? I remember Ben Scott doing a great job at Kendrick High in Columbus before taking the Carrollton job. Coach Scott died suddenly and without warning, bringing this West Georgia Community to tears. Ben Scott, a very affable and facile person and a great coach, was well-loved. Carrollton is another great sports town where the people are crazy for their team. I can name a few towns like this in Georgia, and I will, even fearing the retribution for leaving others off the list: Valdosta, Lincolnton, Carrollton, Dalton, Griffin, Newnan, Tifton, Bremen, Warner Robins, LaGrange, Sandersville (getting stronger each year), Buford, Moultrie, and Thomasville, just to name a few off the top of my head. Can you beat Friday Night Football in a small community?

First of all, SouthGeorgiaRules, you are so right about Randall Godfrey playing at Lowndes County...and for Rick Tomberlin at that! Now I remember that Randall traveled to Forsyth, Georgia to watch his former coach's team, Washinton County, play Mary Persons High in the playoffs. In fact, I stood next to Godfrey on the sidelines and was thinking that he didn't look that big. I think that he was still at UGA at the time. This Washington County (or, "WACO" as the fans call it) team was loaded with players like Takeo Spikes, and I believe it was one of (or perhaps the only) teams at WACO which won the State while Rick Tomberin was there. Godfrey lives in Gwinnett and is finishing up his degree at UGA -- he may have finished it by now. He could have played a couple of more years in the NFL (I think that he played 11 or 12) but he wanted to spend more time with his wife and kids. Yes, how did I forget another Valdosta to UGA QB with John Bond? Many QBs from Valdosta matriculated in Athens in the 1980s and early 1990s. I do not remember Cox at Warner Robins. Sorry.

Fred, you remember Charlie Dudish, eh? Looked just like Mickey Mantle in a baseball uniform. His Avondale baseball team traveled to Columbus his senior year to play Columbus High in the finals. CHS won. I remember how big Dudish's forearms were. I remember the date to be in the late 1960s...perhaps 1968 or 1969. I don't remember this being 1962-1964 as you indicate. Charles Dudish did sign with Tech under, I believe, Bud Carson, and did not pan out so well. He was, however, a bigger physical specimen than someone like Alec Ogletree at Newnam. Dudish was a man among boys. Fred, do you remember Rudy Kinard (sp?) in basketball at Decatur High at or around the same time as Charlie Dudish at Avondale?

"That choking sound you hear is the Lowndes football team. Let’s see what round they choke on this year. cough-cough-hack-hack."

Was last year the first year you watched high school football? Because they sure didn't choke in 04, 05, or 07 and that is just in the past 5 years. If the best teams will lose every now and then if the elements are right!

BulldawgBite - It's cool. Etowah looks ready and prepared for South Gwinnet. I think Etowah should be able to run the ball and extend drives using clock. Etowah should score if they eliminate their mental errors. The defense has improved, along with special teams of late. Hopefully South Gwinnet will live and die with pass. I just think it will come down to big plays, in a very contested game.
Funny though, that the two games you mentioned are my upset specials, I will post tomorrow!

robert, thanks for the update. I hate to hear that about Gregorie. I know he is small for a quarterback and to me he never was really a threat to run. But from what I have seen over the last few years, coach Herron has always used multiple quarterbacks for his wing t. I would have thought Gregorie would have understood that.

Camden qb Gregorie quit because he was not going to start the last home game against Bradwell. He evidently was not a team player. You know he was only about 5'5 and 145 pounds if that much. Our backup qb has been playing as much or more than Gregorie and is a bigger young man.

Southside High School Observer,

Remember in 62-64 when Avondale played Valdosta for state champs? Charles Dudish was the Avondale qb that had a national news feature done on him. He went to GT, fizzled out and was never heard from again. Yep, I was there and remember the window sticker we had made when Avondale won. It was a big deal to knock off the big V!

the two games this friday that will showcase which teams are for real or not will be collins hill/roswell. and etowah/south gwinnett. i think both 2 seeds have a lot to prove as each has only 1 loss but im taking collins hill and the rushing attack over roswell. and i have south gwinnetts passing attack. actually i think this south gwinnett team could get to quarters as well. sorry pops. i dont know too much about your etowah eagles but i hope it is a good game.

SGT CHRIS, every comment made about Camden you must put your 2 cents in somewhere, comments made about other teams and there is nothing from you. Just read your posts from today. All those other schools and your only comment is about Camden, and I must say thats a daily ritual for you. And please leave the LaGrange comments out I know they have a wonderful no excellent program, thats not the dispute. And I know for a fact now that Im not the only one that notice it. Talking to another wildcat fan who is also a blogger and I wont put his name out there. I mentioned your name and he said that that guy(SGT CHRIS)has a problem with Camden.

CHEaglefan, if y'all weren't lucky enough to miss North Gwinnett this season, you might not even be in the playoffs. If y'all weren't lucky enough to beat Chattahoochee and North Forsyth by a combined six points, you might not be in the playoffs. Lucky, lucky, lucky. But Friday night in the Hornet's nest - luck......runs......OUT.

CHEaglefan:

Yes, Roswell's QB quit. His replacement played at least a few series in every game and lots of Roswell folks think he's better than the starter who quit.

Also, you have a very convenient memory. The last time the 2 teams played each other, the refs were a major factor, just not quite how you remember it.

Roswell was called for 15 penalties that night for 145 yards. Collins Hill was penalized twice for 19 yards, one of them a no-brainer roughing-the-kicker penalty.

You might want to look at the film again. The Roswell RB was stopped but he wasn't down. Don't blame the refs because the CH defense quit on the play.

Sportsfan...word on the street says Northside will be in the same region with the other local schools (WRHS, HOCO, and the new Veterans), along with Westside and Rutland (Macon) and Jones County, and Upson-Lee. I don't think Westside is happy to hear that.

Southside High School Observer: Enjoyed your look back at HS football. However, Randall Godfrey played at Lowndes. I know you also remember John Bond at Valdosta. Not only did WRHS have Brooks, Simmons & Womack, but the graduating class of 1977 included Danny Cox, a pitcher for St. Louis Cardinals in the 1980's. Needless to say, none of the 4 were at the 30 yr reunion in 2007.
BTW: Wasn't Thomasville High part of 1-AAA as well?

Greetings Decatur 4 Life ,

I agree with you to some point. But you never know, this is Georgia Football, and you should always be prepared to expect for the unexpected. I'm hoping that Bradwell Institute pull out the win. I am pulling for them.

Greetings Northside Observer,

It will definitely be interesting in AAAA for NSWR. You have some good teams to contend with out of Region 1 ( Central Thomasville) if NSWR are placed there. You also have Region two that is a pretty good Region as well.

I just read on the roswell beacon website that the Roswell starting quarterback quit the team. Is this true? has anyone else heard about this? does this mean I can pencil in my Eagles for the second round.

A couple observations;
I am glad this blog is staying on topic. The other one has gotten a little wierd with all the education talk, N GA Vs S GA. Please stick to football!
Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I am less likely to read through some of the longer posts, i.e Southside Observers history lesson, though I did this time.

NG 18 - I believe the Woodstock Fans answered for me. Woodstock has very good defense, so I threw it in, about the Zero/Zero tie.
However, that comment was more in response to your claim that McCeachern would not score more than 10 points.

All the talk about Camden is moot. That's why we have a playoff. Yes they have a weak region but that will show in the playoffs in round two after they get hit in the mouth for the first time in weeks and there players are a little banged up. 1-AAAAA has to do it week in and week out which gives us depth at every position. Which also shows when our teams make deep runs in the playoffs. Some off the ATL. regions have this as well which is why they make a good showing during this time of year. High school football is probally one of the most unpredictable sports out there and you never know just what team will show up. With that said, Westlake better be ready to take a hit because the PACK is ready to give you one.

When is everyone going to give the region theory a rest? Why is when other 5A schools stack their non-region schedule against 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A schools, and start 3-0 before they get to their region, noone is concerned, but Camden becomes the but of jokes for being in region 3-5A ball. I see none of those schools lining up to play Camden to start the season, except in the Korky Kell Classic which, until this Grayson this year, Camden has done exceptionally well. Homefield advantage does not mean automatic wins, Dacula went to Camden a couple of years back and won, as well as a couple of other schools. The schools in the Atlanta metro, have homefield, during the games in the dome. Their fans just don't showup. Camden fans travel with their team. They create homefield advantage wherever they travel to. I guess we could say the same about all level of sports when 1 team in a division is dominant, Patriots, Yankees, Braves, Gators, Valdosta in their heyday, in fact Valdosta dominated in every region they were in. The schools around them got better, not because they complained, but because they worked to get better. When Camden had to travel to Newnan last year, no complaining, they packed up the town and traveled the 3-4 hour trip on a friday to a field that I played on when I was at Griffin-Spalding High in the early 80's. Extra seats were brought in because there was not enough fixed sitting. I am sure many of you have seen Camden play in the dome,, and seen the number of fans filling the stands. Valdosta has taught schools 1 thing, build in the rec league, middle schools and you will have a steady supply of quality athletes to compete in all divisions.

When CH played Roswell 2 years ago in the playoffs there was one play that was not called a tackle even though the Roswell player was clearly on the ground and play had stopped. However, a no call from the officials meant the kid got up and ran for a touchdown which ended up being the margin of victory for Roswell. Hopefully this year the eagles will be up by a few touchdowns before the officials decide to start helping the hornets. Go Eagles!!!

Newnan does not stand a chance against Valdosta. Not only is our offense better than Newnan's but our defense is significantly superior to Newnan's heralded and overrated defense. All Newnan has is the Ogletrees after them Newnan is nothing. We are from the SEC of georgia high school football and you guys are like the Mountain West or Big Ten. You are the one way overrated team that plays nobody like TCU or Cincinnati and youll go undefeated after beating all nobody teams then get whipped in a bowl. Newnan will be one and done and South Georgia will prove again that the only real football in the state comes from down here.

Goober: I am sure that you are correct, but I was thinking that The Park got beat that game. Perhaps it was the next round. I was actually walking the sideline with Hines Ward & Company that game and met Hyder after the game at mid-field. Yes, what a job Hines has done in the NFL -- Pittsburgh's leading receiver for the last ten years. Incredible. He ought to be a first-balloter in the Hall. It was sad when Coach Hyder died suddenly. He was recruited out of Rome, Georgia to the famed Valdosta program. I remember attending games at Cleveland Field in 'Dosta in the 1950s when the Cats dominated the State (and Nation) under Coach Wright Bazemore. Now this was the beginning of Winnersville, U.S.A. I also remember the old Region 1-AAA, the toughest region in the State each year (like the SEC today). Triple A was the highest classification in the old days. Listen to the members of the old 1-AAA: Valdosta, Moultrie (now Colquitt County), Tift County, LaGrange, Lanier of Macon, Willingham of Macon, Mark Smith of Macon, Jordan of Columbus, Columbus of Columbus, Baker of Columbus, and Warner Robins (there was no Northside of Warner Robins then). Of course, this was during the segregated days of public schools. So, I am telling my age. With integration, Valdosta continued its winning ways with athletes like Stan Bounds in the early '70s. I think that the biggest thing that hurt 'Dosta was the emergence of a strong county school in Lowndes County. It was inevitable as the area grew in population. Every now in then, the Wildcats would have a down year. I think that they had one when Buck Belue was there. Buck Belue, Greg Talley, Randall Godfrey, John Lastinger, and others had great careers at UGA after matriculating through the Valdosta program. By the way, Valdosta is a beautiful town near the Florida border and has a good and beautiful university as well...the Valdosta State University Blazers! That was an unsolicited and unpaid plug. I am not a "professional" blogger.

But, here I go rambling again. Moultrie was a powerhouse as well. Ray Goff was a passing QB there but ended up beating out Matt Robinson at UGA in his senior year. (Prior to that year, they swapped in and out.) In the 1976 season, Goff demonstrated his running skills over his passing ones. He was Player of the Year in the SEC. UGA won the SEC Championship, getting beat later in the Sugar Bowl by a Tony Dorsett-led Pitt Panthers. Matt Robinson went on to have a good career with the New York Jets in the NFL. Ray Goff did not make the Denver Broncos and gave back his signing bonus which endeared him in the hearts of many. He began coaching at South Carolina before coming home to UGA, and when Dooley retired, there was a groundswell among the Georgia faithful to install the kid from Moultrie as the new head coach. I hear that Coach Goff is now happy with his Zaxby franchises.

Goober, you see what you started! Thanks for the correct info about the Forest Park-Valdosta game. It was indeed a good game. I was there.

Can you remember the three stalwarts on the Warner Robins team of 1976? I think that this team was ranked number one in the country. James Brooks (the scat back) who starred at Auburn and in the NFL, Ron Simmons (the nose guard) who starred at FSU and the NFL, and Jimmy Womack (the fullback) who opened up the running routes for a fellow named Herschel Walker when the Big Dawg was a freshmen. This team beat a team out of Columbus (I must say...it was Jordan) 90 to 0 in 1976. The Jordan coach refused to punt, and now reaps the benefits of being noted in the annals of Georgia high school football history.

Who started at quarterback for Bremen High School as a freshmen in 1995? Preston Haliburton, a big time Buckhead lawyer and undefeated (13 and 0) heavyweight boxer who is now angling for a title shot. If you have been to Buckhead lately, you have probably seen his billboards. Haliburton was being recruited by Georgia Tech and other Division One schools as a QB. He was a 6'1" and 205 pound QB who could not only throw the ball but who could run too. But, he hurt his back his senior year. He was North Carolina State's number one recruit at QB, and Ray Goff was also recruiting him, but Goff was canned at UGA that year. So, Haliburton, with a hurt back, signed with West Georgia in baseball. He later transferred to UGA where he realized that he could box left-handed to protect his back. He became became the SEC Boxing Champ for two years. (He still had one year of boxing eligibility left and boxed as a law student.) Haliburton was three times First Team All American in boxing. Had the injury not occurred in high school, he probably never would have taken up boxing. Oh the vicissitudes of life! Preston Haliburton might have been the first football player in GHSA to score a varsity touchdown while he was still 14 years of age. I know that Robert Trotter of Landmark Christian scored a varsity touchdown against Ola High of Henry County when he was still 14. Are there others out there? Haliburton, in the 8th Grade in Carroll County, was named 8th Grade Athlete of the Year. His father, Richard Haliburton (who also happened to coach Evander Holyfield in his preparation of the 1988 Olympics) did not want his son running the Notre Dame Box -- the offense still being run at Carrollton High School (from the Coach Grisham days). So, the Haliburtons rented an apartment in Bremen where the Blue Devils were not hemmed in with an archaic Notre Dame Box. Bremen and Landmark Christian have been big rivals in Division One play, but not as big in their rivalry as the Bremen Blue Devils and the Bowdon Red Devils. Kids in the Haralson County area pay tuition to attend the city school of Bremen. (Bremen City has its own school systems and has almost been operating like a private school for years, especially since the nation's longest-serving Speaker of the House, the late and legendary Thomas B. [Tom] Murphy, hailed from Bremen. Needless to say, Bremen was taken care of.) Bremen had a big tight end last year who was recruited by many D-1 schools before he decided on Troy.

Y'all forgive my typos, OK? I'm just a Southsider who is just rambling. Hey, y'all remember that 1987 Morrow State Championship team? Andre Hastings (later of UGA and the NFL Steelers) was a sophomore on that team. I remember watching his body be almost completely parallel to the ground in the end zone when he caught a pass against Southwest DeKalb at Pantersville Stadium. I read somewhere that Andre has found his post-NFL calling in training dogs. Seriously, he is good at it and has a thriving business...I think in Colorado.

Well, I better stop for now while I am still ahead, eh? Goober, if you catch any more inaccuracies, please keep us informed, OK? Gotta run.

Goober: I am sure that you are correct, but I was thinking that The Park got beat that game. Perhaps it was the next round. I was actually walking the sideline with Hines Ward & Company that game and met Hyder after the game at mid-field. Yes, what a job Hines has done in the NFL — Pittsburgh’s leading receiver for the last ten years. Incredible. He ought to be a first-balloter in the Hall. It was sad when Coach Hyder died suddenly. He was recruited out of Rome, Georgia to the famed Valdosta program. I remember attending games at Cleveland Field in ‘Dosta in the 1950s when the Cats dominated the State (and Nation) under Coach Wright Bazemore. With integration, Valdosta continued its winning ways with athletes like Stan Bounds in the early ’70s. I think that the biggest thing that hurt ‘Dosta was the emergence of a strong county school in Lowndes County. By the way, Valdosta is a beautiful town near the Florida border and has a good and beautiful university as well…the Valdosta State University Blazers! That was an unsolicited and unpaid plug. I am not a “professional” blogger.

This team beat a team out of Columbus (I must say…it was Jordan) 90 to 0 in 1976.

He was a 6′1″ and 205 pound QB who could not only throw the ball but who could run too. But, he hurt his back his senior year. He was North Carolina State’s number one recruit at QB, and Ray Goff was also recruiting him, but Goff was canned at UGA that year. His father, Richard Haliburton (who also happened to coach Evander Holyfield in his preparation of the 1988 Olympics) did not want his son running the Notre Dame Box — the offense still being run at Carrollton High School (from the Coach Grisham days). (Bremen City has its own school systems and has almost been operating like a private school for years, especially since the nation’s longest-serving Speaker of the House, the late and legendary Thomas B. It has to start somewhere, how many rings did you have before the year 2000? At one point John Elway didn't have any championships either but he ended with a couple.

I feel ya, nothing is definite in high school football but Bradwell wouldn't win twice if they played 10 times at Hallford. If the game was on the road then maybe the possibility of a Bradwell win would be a little greater.

to nhs eagleman-the play you referred to where the referee gave the ball to nhs after the pack had run only 3 plays-you failed to mention that it occurred on nhs 20 yarde line and the pack only needed one foot for a first down and on the subsequent possession that ended in a field goal we had 4th and long. there were other untimely highly questionable calls made. it should never have come down to the last 3-4 minutes.you brag about the long winning streak, i'm wondering how in the world did you lose any games at home.

Southside High School Observer: I just read your post "Back in the mid ’90s, Nick Hyder’s Cats traveled to Tara Stadium in Jonesboro and put a whuppin’ on Hines Ward’s Forest Park Panthers in another battle of the cats."

Actually, Forest Park won that 1995 game 22-21, and as it turned out it was the last game Nick Hyder ever coached. He died suddenly in May 1996 in the lunchroom at Valdosta High School. May God continue to rest his soul.

And though it's not widely mentioned, that was the real beginning of the end of the glory days of the Wildcats.

SportsFan 31313: The team that Warner Robins Demons fielded this year was the championship team they had been waiting for the last three years. I know the parents and players since rec ball through High School. They won a lot at the middle school level--so they were ready! However, for some reason they didn't play as champions in 2009 until it was too late. The areas that Northside will give up under re-zoning due to the new Veterans High School--- will go to Warner Robins High School. The quality players that Veterans High suits-up will come mostly from the WR Demons.

As a AAAA School, Northside will definitely be in control for a number of years among Houston County Schools.

Please answer that question WILDCAT FAN???So why are you getting at me now?? I'm trying to find out info on Liberty County who at 7-3 is going to be a challenge for LaGrange in the first round...Since theyre from your neck of the woods, how bout some insight on them?? Otherwise, Camden has a ways to go to get to double digits in football state titles, so until then, remember this HATE UP NOT DOWN!!!

NG18 i agree that it wont be a low scoring game between woodstock and NG. i think that if NG wins they have a very good chance against lowndes. i feel like we are better than the grayson team that beat them last year. and lowndes lost to nside wr. this year. their offense is not as good in true road games lately against good teams. they still have to beat camden first, which will be no easy task.

Hey NG18.... A few facts about Woodstock. They will keep the score low as they have only trailed during a game once against Etowah. They lost in OT to Mceachern. This team is swarming aggressive with 4 shutouts which could have been 5 or 6 if we didnt put our 2s & 3s in.

- Valdosta has won its opening postseason game 28 straight times. The last loss was to Central of Thomasville in 1976.
As one who played in this game (for Central at Valdosta), on a Tuesday after a Friday game and then Dougherty Saturday for the region title (since we had three 9-1 teams and only one playoff team per region); it is so much better now that 4 teams per region make it.

It can also be a disadvantage players don't have thier legs to play a full competitive game in the play-offs. Example the Northside game and the Woodstock game. Leading Northside by two touchdowns and with the ball driving again and the legs go from under you and Northside gets back into the game. Got thier legs back an took control of the game again. It has its pro and cons. And no SGT CHRIS its not you speaking of the region but of Camden in negative light.

NG18. Lowndes may not make it to round 3. Our entire bracket is going to be great. And Pops say that because he's seen our D play and knows that its one of the best of the state....again. Plus we have better coaching. =) But thats all to come to you next week.

Boy NG18..You guys sound like the best team in the world. It's a shame no other team in this state has a team as talented as yours. I don't know how we will handle a player like your Cordero Dixon, our little ole defense will sure be tested. That is if we get to play you. Also, I pray for it to be dry, as our team just hates to get dirty. Ohhhhhhhhhhh Lord please be nice and don't let anyone beat up on us to bad.

GHS#22

How many starters did you guys loose from last years team? We lost a total of 15. You guys have a great team but how many rings do you have? Heck, Lowndes has lost count on how many Championship rings they have and Camden has two. I promise one thing, Camden and Lowndes are chomping at the bit to play Grayson. If Camden wins in the first round (we never take any team for granted) and Lowndes wins as well, the second round will be very interesting. I think the team that wins between Camden and Lowndes will also be your next State Champion. Camden and Lowndes have been there and done that. What about Grayson?

NHS Eagles Man,

WOW!!!! Warner Robins will lose that many? That is very hurtful to the program. But you know, Warner Robins always seems to bounce back after adversity. Tell me though, how does the change not affect the retuening starters at Northside Warner Robbins? Is it that th zoning or rezoning will not affect the area from where the returning starters live?
Dropping back down to Class AAAA probably put you all in region 1-AAAA or Region 2-AAAA?

Pops
How can you say Woodstock will keep the score low. We still have SR Cordero Dixon who burned Billy Burns of Walton two years ago at the Dome semi. He gave Peachtree Ridge all they could handle last week. McEachern let Brookwood score 32 points, North Gwinnett held Brookwood to 3 until they started there JV team in the 4th quarter. We scored 41 by the 3rd and put 2nd string in. If Region 5 wants to win in the playoffs they need to step out and play someone, Prattville beat us bad 2 years ago when we went all the way to the Finals. The only other team that has beat Prattville other than NG this year is Don Bosco Prep NJ 35-24. That team is ranked #5 in the Nation. It will not matter for North Gwinnett or Woodstock because Lowndes is beating either team in round 3.You guys need to play Hoover or someone like that on your side of town.Woodstock needs to pray for Rain
because all the North Gwinnett playoff losses the last 3 years have been in flooded conditions like today.

NHS Eagles Man,

But then on the other hand, Region 3-AAAAA and Region 4-AAAAA may not fit into that category. The number two seed in Region 3-AAAAA, and Region AAAAA in my opinion will be out after the first round.
