- East Coweta has lost its past six road games in the playoffs, a skid that started with a 22-0 loss at Lowndes in 2003.

- Brookwood is 10-1 in the playoffs against Cobb County teams, including McEachern. The loss came against Harrison in 2003.
- McEachern is 1-5 in the playoffs this decade, its only win against Dacula 14-7 in 2004.
- McEachern’s last home playoff victory came in 1999 against South Gwinnett.
- This is the only first-round matchup between teams with at least 25 playoff victories. Brookwood is 35-19 in the postseason, and McEachern is 26-21.

Kell (6-4) at Peachtree Ridge (8-2)
- Both schools opened in 2003, Kell in Cobb County, Peachtree Ridge in Gwinnett County.
- In 2005, Kell became the youngest Cobb County school to reach the state playoffs and beat South Cobb 7-0 in the first round.
- In 2006, Peachtree Ridge became the youngest school in the state’s highest classification since 2-year-old Brown in 1949 to win a state championship. Peachtree Ridge tied Roswell that year.
- Peachtree Ridge is unbeaten at home (4-0), unbeaten against Cobb County teams (4-0) and unbeaten in the first round (3-0) in the state playoffs.
- Kell has made the playoffs in three of the past four seasons but failed to qualify during the senior season of current Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer.

Valdosta (7-3) at Newnan (10-0)
- Valdosta and Newnan have played each other once – in the 1951 Class AA championship game. Valdosta won 14-9.
- Valdosta has won its opening postseason game 28 straight times. The last loss was to Central of Thomasville in 1976.
- Valdosta is 113-26-2 in the GHSA-run postseason (since 1948) and has captured 23 state titles overall, the last in 1998.
- Newnan is 21-24 all-time in the postseason and has made state finals in 1951 (lost to Valdosta) and 1981 (lost to Warner Robins).
- Newnan is 3-6 in the first round since 1990, when the GHSA expanded the playoffs to 16 teams.

Jenkins (4-6) at M.L. King (9-1)
- M.L. King opened in 2002 and has made the playoffs each season since 2003.
- M.L. King is 9-6 all-time in the state playoffs and reached the Class AAA semifinals in 2004.
- Jenkins’ 1966 playoff game was a semifinal in a season in which there were only six regions, and Jenkins went straight to the final four. Jenkins lost 16-7 to Valdosta.
- Jenkins has lost all four postseason games in its history (1962, 1966, 1984, 2007) and scored a total of seven points in them.
- Region 3-AAAAA teams (including Jenkins) have never won a playoff game on the road. They are 0-18.

Marietta (5-5) at Grayson (10-0)
- Grayson is 10-0 after the regular season for the second straight season.
- The No. 1 team in the highest classification has not lost in the first round since the GHSA expanded the playoffs to 16 teams from eight in 1990.
- Marietta is 0-5 against Gwinnett County schools in the playoffs under Friday Richards, who became head coach in 1995. Four of those were on the road to higher-seeded teams.
- Marietta is the only team from Cobb County that has ever won a state title (1967).
- Grayson and Marietta have never played each other.

Collins Hill (8-2) at Roswell (9-1)
- Roswell has the same record (9-1), the same seed (No. 2 from 6-AAAAA) and the same first-round opponent (Collins Hill) as in 2006, when it shared the Class AAAAA championship with Peachtree Ridge.
- This is one of two first-round games that will match teams that lost their final regular-season games. The other is Colquitt County against Westlake.
- The last team in the highest classification to lose its final regular-season game and win a state title was Marietta in 1967.
- Collins Hill has one playoff victory since 2001, a 70-68 overtime win over South Cobb in the 2004 first round.
- Collins Hill won three straight road games to reach the 2001 semifinals, the school’s best playoff finish.

Centennial (5-5) at North Gwinnett (10-0)
- North Gwinnett is a 49-year-old school that completed its first 10-0 season and won its first region title this year.
- Bob Sphire has won eight playoff games since coming to North Gwinnett in 2006. Only Jeff Herron of Camden County, with nine, has won more playoff games in that time in the highest classification.
- Centennial has made the playoffs twice in its history (2001, 2002). Each time, it lost in the second round.
- Centennial finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in Region 6-AAAAA with Walton and Pope but defeated both in the regular season. Had Milton beaten Kell last week, there would’ve been a five-way tie for third, and Centennial would’ve been left out primarily because of a first-game forfeit to Northview.
- North Gwinnett is 2-0 all-time against Centennial, winning 24-7 in 2005 and 27-3 in 2004.

Dacula (7-3) at Woodstock (9-1)
- Woodstock has never won a playoff game at home. It lost its only home playoff game to Marietta in 2005.
- Woodstock is 9-1 for the first time in its history.
- Woodstock’s Mike O’Brien is one of three coaches in the field who has won a state title in Georgia’s highest classification. He won in 1998 with Valdosta. The others are Jeff Herron of Camden County and Randy McPherson of Lowndes.
- Dacula is 10-4 all-time in the first round of the state playoffs.
- Dacula’s best finishes are the semifinals (1988, 1990, 2005). The first two were in the smallest classification, the latest in the highest.

Chapel Hill (7-3) at Northside, Warner Robins (9-1)
- Northside has advanced to the second round 12 consecutive seasons, the best streak of any Class AAAAA school, although not all of Northside’s first-round wins were in the highest class.
- Northside has won 29 of its past 31 home games in the playoffs. This does not include a loss to Warner Robins, which shares McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
- Northside’s 41 postseason victories (against 26 losses) are the most of any team in the draw besides Valdosta.
- Chapel Hill, which opened in 2000, made the playoffs for the first time in its history last season and won a round after finishing 0-10 in 2007.
- Chapel Hill has never played a road game in the playoffs or traveled south of Coweta County.

Union Grove (8-2) at Windsor Forest (6-4)
- Windsor Forest is 0-5 all-time in postseason games.
- Windsor Forest is 6-0 since Oct. 1.
- Windsor Forest will be playing its second home playoff game. It lost its first to Union Grove 10-0 in 2006.
- Union Grove’s best playoff finish was the 2002 quarterfinals while playing in Class AA. The Henry County school opened in 2000.
- This will be Union Grove’s eighth straight playoff game on the road. Union Grove has won two of them, both against Region 3-AAAAA opponents.

North Forsyth (7-3) at Lassiter (10-0)
- Lassiter, which opened in 1982, is 10-0 and region champion for the first time.
- This will be Lassiter’s second playoff game at home. It lost its first one 45-42 in 1999 to South Gwinnett, whose quarterback was David Greene.
- Lassiter is 1-4 all-time in the state playoffs, its lone win a 23-20 overtime decision against Etowah last season.
- North Forsyth has won playoff games in classes AAAA, AAA and AA since 1999, but has never played a playoff game in AAAAA.
- North Forsyth’s best season in history was its 2001 run to the semifinals in the Georgia Dome in AAA.

Etowah (8-2) at South Gwinnett (9-1)
- Etowah had never made the state playoffs until Bill Stewart was named head coach in 2006.
- Etowah has made the playoffs in all four seasons under Stewart.
- South Gwinnett has not won a playoff game since 2003, when T. McFerrin was the head coach.
- South Gwinnett has won five more games this season than last. The only other team in the draw to improve that much is McEachern.
- Etowah has not won in Gwinnett County since 1977, when Etowah played another first-year school called Parkview. Etowah has played in Gwinnett four times.

Bradwell Institute (6-4) at Stephenson (10-0)
- Stephenson has won seven region titles but finished 10-0 only twice.
- Stephenson has lost in the first round the past two seasons.
- Bradwell Institute is 12-11 all-time in the postseason but ended an eight-game losing streak in the playoffs with a victory last season over East Coweta.
- Bradwell’s last road win in the playoffs came in 1996 against Warner Robins.
- The schools have never played each other.

- Colquitt County is 1-5 in the playoffs since coach Jim Hughes retired after the 1999 season.
- Colquitt County has not scored more than 14 points in a playoff game since 1999.
- Westlake is making its first playoff appearance in Class AAAAA after qualifying 12 times from 1990 to 2006 in AAAA or AAA.
- Westlake has never played a current member of Region 1-AAAAA.

Fact of the matter is, Camden won the state championship last year, and they are the champions until they’re beat in the playoffs. PERIOD.

Southside High School Observer – John Bond went to
Miss State, not UGA. In his time there he never finished his basket, per his ex-father -in-law.

Has anybody heard the rumor about about Roswell’s QB quitting? I know one of Camden’s QBs quit, but I also one that Roswell’s quit too. Any truth to that anybody?

I am just excited that Greg Franklin from Marietta gets a shot at the spotlight this Friday night. This wonderful young man is having a phenominal season and deserves the recognition that comes from playing the #1 team in the state in the first round

You can view the new classifications at http://www.ghsa.net. Wow SportsFan31313 I didn’t think Brandwell would be dropping down. I wonder if they will apply to still play up? That leaves Camden as the only true 5A school in the region, wonder what would happen if they only allow Bradwell to play up one class? Maybe they might reconsider that super 32 they talked about a few years back. Oh yeah, nope that wasn’t me wildcat fan was talking about. The rumor on the QB quiting is, his family had meeting with the Coach and wasn’t pleased with him not being the full time starting QB. I guess they didn’t like the answer they got and had their son quit the team, which is a shame I think. He might not have been that big, but the little man had heart and gave it his all. I know it had to be tough on him to play up to his last game and then leave his teammates. I wish him well though.

SGT CHRIS, Please lets not get personal, like you said its only a blog. This what makes it fun. Its not personal. I rush home from work every day to read your blog. And thats the only reason I comment on your blogs, it makes it fun, and Sir I think thats a compliment to you. Every thing is a little better when you have some-one to talk smack to. I actually agree with most of your blogs, i just like to stir it up a little, and after reading some of your blogs I thought you would be a good guy to stir it up with. So lets call it a truce, because i do not like name calling.

Not that it’s received much attention, but Roswell’s starting QB quit after last week’s loss to Lassiter. His back-up (a junior) played at least a few series in every Roswell game this season and played pretty well when he was in the game. No experience behind him, however.

WOW….im tickled…AAA just became the most competitive class in GA football..a few that are reportedly dropping down to AAA: North Clayton, Statesboro, Ware County, Dalton, Sandy Creek, Westside Macon to name a few..Also can’t wait to see who replaces Northside Columbus and Columbus in what I hope will remain 2-AAA..I can see both Northside Columbus and Columbus making a two class jump with the supposed influx of military coming into the Columbus area. Not saying thats gonna help them football wise..I also hope they draw the region to include Carrollton into whatever region they put LaGrange and Carver Columbus?? AA?? I really hope they play up!!

With all of these players quitting, what does that do for their eligibility if they have any left?? Can they go somewhere next year and play or what?

Please stop complaining about CAMDENS Region. Thats who they tell them to play. I’ve been saying for years, Camden belongs in region1. It will happen soon. Then you Northside fans can see some sacred fans.

For anyone on here with doubts about Lassiter, you won’t be as skeptical after you’ve seen that offense. The defense isn’t that great (doesn’t have to be) but the offense is.

Mason is a college quarterback playing at the high school level. He may not be quite as good as Eric Zeier was at Marietta, but he’s the best I’ve seen since and operates the spread offense to perfection.

Unless you have a couple of linemen who can really rush the passer and a bunch of DBs who play their assignments without mistakes, they’re gonna score points in bunches. Mason sees the entire field, and will find the open receiver, especially when they get close to the end zone.

The best way to stop them is to try and take away their short passing game and dare Mason to throw the ball down the field. But you better have some CBs who can cover man-to-man if you do that.

Looking forward to the Collins Hill-Roswell rematch from 3 years ago. The 2 teams are going to have a hard time matching that game for pure theater.

SGT CHRIS-Camden’s quarterback was a senior so he is done. olesarge- I hope thats not the real reason the qb quit. If you have ever listened to Coach Herron speak to his players you know that he always stresses TEAM effort. No one player is greater then the team. Best of luck to Gregorie.

spwhite, that’s what I’ve been told and of course I said it was a rumor and we know how that goes. I’ve spoken with Coach Herron and his staff many times and I know he’s about THE TEAM concept, remember last year when he set some of his best players down for not following team rules. I hope this wasn’t the case either.

Sgt Chris, if a player decides to quit any team wants to play for another school, the only way that is possible is his legal guardian resides in the area where he will be attending school. I just had this dicussion with an AD today and he stated as long as the parents live in the area of the school he would be eligable to play.

olesarge,

I don’t believe that Bradwell Institute will be dropping down. Reason is that in Class AAAA, they would have to travel too far to play teams in that Classification. They will request to play up. The majority of the teams near Bradwell are AAA, and AA teams.

SportsFan31313, you don’t think they would be grouped with the schools in Glynn County, but then again with the changes being made, those schools would have to move to a new region as well since both Wayne and Ware might drop down. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Good luck tomorrow night and dress warm.

HomeFieldAdvantage: Right you are! I am getting old. I do remember now that John Bond played at MSU. I remembered his name, and I remembered that he was from Valdosta. Did he play for Jackie Sherrill? Hey Wolverine2Blazer, I was actually struggling with that this morning…was it Creekside or Creekview? You are right. I just write my ramblings off the top of my head, and I love you guys correcting my inaccuracies! This is great. I learn something and refine stuff in my rusty head! Thanks guys! Can anyone tell me who was the HUGE running back for Tift County in the 1967 football season? (This was before court-ordered desegregation.) The answer: Big Earl Anderson. He was an African American kid the size and physique of Herschel Robinson and was also the dominant running back in the old Region 1-AAA. Who was the defensive back/returner recruited by UGA out of Joneboro in 1977? He was coached at Jonesboro by former Wally Butts’s pupil, Weyman Sellers. Coach Sellers also coached Fran Tarkenton at the old Athens High School (now Clarke Central). This guy went on to become First Team All American on UGA’s 1980 National Champions. The answer: Scott Woerner.

Southside High School Observer: I believe John Bond played for Emory Bellard at MSU. I remember him being an option QB for the Maroon Bulldogs. From what a friend that was at MSU at the time, young Mr. Bond loved the nightlife. However, I’m sure he had to get out of Starkville to really experience it. LOL. BTW, which game are you going to be tonight?

Enough Region 1-AAAAA talk. Since 2000, when AAAAA started, there has been 1 main stay from the self proclaimed “SEC” of High School Football in GA, that’s Lowndes. Here are the champions: Parkview- 2000,2001,2002.
Camden-2003. Lowndes-2004,2005. PTRG/Roswell-2006. Lowndes-2007. Camden-2008. Northside has never won in region AAAAA nor has Warner Robins. What does this mean, the facts speak for themselves, the only team in 1-AAAAA that has room to talk is Lowndes. The rest have not proven themselves against the playoff competiton of 5A football. Titles only count where you are playing at now, not where you were. Until someone other than Lowndes win a title from 1-AAAAA, the talent level of those teams are no better than another region. Since 2000, Lowndes and Camden have been holding up SouthGa football in 5-A, those are the facts, that other stuff is just the filling. So 1-AAAAA there is your challenge, don’t ride AAAA-AAA-AA championships,Valdosta(AAAA-AAA-AA-A) Northside(AAAA) Warner Robins(AAAA-AAA) Colquit(AAAA) Tift(AAAA). What do you have to show in AAAAA? Just a thought.

SouthGeorgiaRules: This ole Southsider is heading up to Commerce Town in North Georgia to watch the Commerce Tigers take on the Landmark Christian War Eagles. Coach Ray Lamb built a powerhouse at Commerce High three or four decades ago, and I think that his son followed him (like the situation with Coach Walker and his son at Sandy Creek in Fayette). This will be a hard-srapping Single A football, with both teams being 6 and 4 and trying to stay in the hunt. Whatever teams stays in the hunt will be considered a cinderella story if it goes all…the…way, eh? Another group of Tigers will be about 30 miles south, taking on the Red & Black Bulldogs. Richt and Chizik (sp?)…both need a win very badly. Ray Lamb had a good running back in the 1980s named Allen (can anyone remember his first name?). He starred at Clemson under…was it Charley Pell or Danny Ford? Landmark Christian had a big lineman who started for Alabama three or four years ago. Landmark Christian has won its last three games in a row to finish strong. Single A has some interested games, but the schools are so small that they do not have the numbers to have very strong and fast kids in every position. They have a smaller number of students from which to choose. For example, Landmark beat Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy (SACA) a couple of weeks ago. This same SACA is where Dwight Howard of the NBA played. Herschel Walker, Garrison Hearst, Champ Bailey, Washaun Ealey, et al., all played for Single A schools. The games are still fun to watch. In 1949, my father coached Division C (which is now Single A in Georgia) basketball in South Georgia before moving on to AAA (now AAAAA in Georgia) in 1950 to coach football, basketball, and track. Several of his players on his Division C team in South Georgia went on to have very successful careers in business and so forth. One of his players was the key person founding Great Atlanta Christian (GAC) School in Lilburn. GAC is a powerhouse and now plays at the Division AA level like rival Buford. GAC has produced some good fullbacks for the Bulldogs. Gotta run and get ready for my trek to Commerce. Perhaps it is Landmark in an upset. I’ll let you know. It will be a real cat fight in Newnantown tonight! The Cats of Valdosta and the Hometown Cougars!

olesarge,

There is only one School in Glynn County that will be in AAAA, and that’s Brunswick. I would be surprised if Bradwell stayed in AAAA. They will petition to play up sense the enrollment is so close to the new enrollment size of AAAAA. Bradwell would have had about 3500 students had they not build a new school. In addition, Bradwell would have to travel too far to play true class AAAA schools. They will request to play up, I strongly believe.

Great game between Lowndes and Camden. I hope Camden goes all the way. A very classy team and very good team sportsmanship. Lowndes made too many mistakes and they were without 2 great players in Jorden Black and Tyler Hunter. Hunter will be back. He is a great player, just ask the players from Peachtree Ridge. Good luck Camden County.
