Got rankings, got draws, got predictions, got it all.
Let’s go class by class:
AAAAA: The first round is a snooze, but the second round will be the most exciting I’ve ever seen, headlined by Lowndes vs. Camden County. Check it out below. I’m picking Lowndes to win the title, but I’m probably going to be wrong. Just too many good teams, too many realistic possibilities, to hook your wagon to one horse. I can see the Gwinnett County vs. Region 1-AAAAA rivalry heating up. It might be played out in the final (Lowndes vs. North Gwinnett or Northside vs. Grayson). Or we could see a Lowndes-Northside final. Or Grayson-North Gwinnett. Then there are the four teams that I don’t feel great about individually, but love them as a group because at last one figures to break through. Those are Lassiter, McEachern, Newnan and Stephenson. Note that Lassiter or Stephenson will make the semifinals if there are no upsets.
AAAA: No. 1 Griffin and No. 2 Southwest DeKalb have separated themselves, IMO, and I see them settling it in the final.
AAA: No. 1 Gainesville and No. 2 Carver of Columbus have separated themselves too, but can’t meet in the final because the draw is not set up that way. And unlike AAAA, this class has major third wheel in Peach County. Gainesville should face Peach in the quarterfinals and Carver in the semifinals. The coin flips for home-field advantage when those region champs meet will be big. Meanwhile, Baldwin is a hot team with a nice draw to the final. Not so high on St. Pius after last week.
AA: No. 1 Calhoun vs. No. 2 Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals? Wow. … A coin toss would decide which is the home team. Meanwhile, Buford has a sweet draw despite getting only the #2 seed in Region 6-AA. The only game I could see Buford losing until the final is a semifinal at Jefferson County, which has a great player in BJ Bostic.
A: No. 1 Wesleyan has a much better draw than No. 2 Savannah Christian. Look for Twiggs County to make the final.
Predictions … I’m putting asterisks by upsets that I couldn’t quite bring myself to predict.

TNGADAWG The brackets for all classifications have always have Region 1, Team 1 on the upper left. I believe you can go to Georgia highschool football on google, click on the GHSA website and see any year you want to. You might can also see it on http://www.thevikingvoice.com

Reeze:
That 199 Lowndes Championship team was a great team if you can remember…with the likes of Dallas Cowboys Jay Ratliff…SEC defefensive lineman of the year Vincent “Sweatpea” Burns…Barrett Wilkes…Vince Copeland…Kelvin “Elderado” Roberts…Darren Richardson…Mike Woods…Greg Lofton…DD Dunn…Andre Lucas…Josh “Slick” Williams…Vernan “Bull” Wrigt They lost a couple games that year…but once they found out what they had…they were unstoppable. In my opinion they were better than that highly ranked Northside team who had Lowndes 28-3 and halftime…and Lowndes came back and won the game.
George Gipp:
That was last year…Grayson won and Lowndes loss…Lowndes were penalized for their actions and everyone went on about thier business…this is a new year and Lowndes is looking to avenge that loss…if Grayson makes it that far. And you questioned where the athletes are coming from…are they being recruited…No! Only FB Robert Anderson transferred here from Texas because of his family being in the military…everyone else comes from Lowndes County middle schools…you mentioned the juniors theat were on the team last year…Ed C, Telvin S, Khary F, Jordan B, Layne G, Robert A, Dion C…all these players were juniors last year. Lowndes is kinda like Florida, USC, or Texas…they reload every year. You think that’s something…they have a pile of sophomores and freshman waiting on their chance. Im willing to bet that from now (counting this year) to 2015 (7 years)…Lowndes will win at least 5 state championships…put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Wow! I thought people were passionate about their teams during the season.
Of course everyone is even more stoked about their team now that they have made it to the playoffs. I really don’t keep track of football all over GA the way some of you do but I like Grayson’s chances of going deep – even to the dome. I know that while that is the team’s goal, they are taking it one game at a time knowing that unlike during the season, a single loss ends the year. Watching them all year really makes me think they have a very good chance.
I appreciate Bohgey, Reeze, Yo, AViking fan, 1-AAAAA Sweep and a few others’ (sorry I don’t keep track of names that much) level headed perspective as they clearly do watch the whole state. I find it interesting that everyone (including Grayson) has to frame this year in terms of the past. I understand the past brings us to where we are but the emphasis is a little strong in my opinion. As several have said, if you have made it this far, you deserve to be here. The season starts over and there is no room for mistakes. On any given night, etc., it sounds so trite but it is so true at this stage. Yes, Grayson clearly played up last year against Lowndes who had a rough night but that just proves the point. If the coach has any talent and has done his job (and would not be at this stage if he hasn’t), from this point in it is *all* about this week’s game and nothing more. By the time we get to the dome (OK I had to throw that in
), there will have been numerous opportunities to fail or have injuries impact games, you name it. A lot of very good teams will have gone down in defeat. I think all of the teams should be very proud of what they have accomplished. I look forward to the weekly back and forth about would’ve, could’ve, should’ve, gonna do. I hope no one loses sight of the fact that the KIDS are out there doing the best they can and out of every game, one team will win and one will lose but it is not the end of the world.
See you in the Dome!

First and foremost, 7AAA sweeps 6AAA this weekend. Second, most people on here is giving the AAA title to Carver, Columbus without even considering Gainesville. I’ve seen both teams play, and I wonder how CC will react if they fall behind early (if they get past FB in the quarters, which I think that they will). Whoever wins the semifinal game between Gainesville and CC WILL be the AAA champs.

Peach County used to be stuck in that region with all those Columbus teams and over the course of those 6 or 7 years, Peach County lost exactly ONE region game – to Kendrick the year they won the championship. So if Carver is even lucky enough to make it to the championship game against Peach, it’s going to be just old times . . . a Peach County beat down of yet another Columbus team.
Go Trojans!

SportsFan31313: ECI lost to Savannah Christian 34-0. Doe you think ECI is going to win Class A? Also, Lowndes County High closed in the 1960s. Do you mean Lowndes? : )
Yes I mean Lowndes…….. ECI seem to a lot better at the end of this season, and if they were to play Weselyan again, ECI would win. They were so close last year. I don’t believe that this year the Class A Champs would be from North Georgia.

Newton County,
Camden County is a very good team, and they consist of a lot of young players. Their defense is exceptional. Jeff Herron has a lot of different looks from offense. They can and will confuse the defense. They have two very good running backs. Look out for Ean Days. This running back/ Kick of return/ punt return/players is very fast. They have a HUGE Tight End and Defensive End as well. Their Defensive back hit very hard. If your defense can contain Camden County, then you may have a shot at wining. If not, then it will be lights out before you even blink twice. Good Luck…..

Sportsfan31313 you read my mind with that 35-0 half time pick.
Lowndes will then make it 50 by mid 3rd quarter and then proceed
to empty the sidelines. The same way they did these teams:
Yes Yo,
I don’t know why the North Georgia fail to believe it when we tell them this. They all have to learn the hard way, and it could be a very painful lesson to learn when East Coweta arrive there.

Ean Days played an exceptional game last year vs. Newnan…but he didn’t show me anything when they played Grayson…and they had a lil boy playing QB…he was probably 5′6″-5′8″… if he’s still under center Lowndes is gonna be in his grill all night!

SouthGa Rules Says
SportsFan31313: If Bradwell wins Friday night, that would be one of the biggest upsets of all time.
Well SouthGa Rules,
They said that last year as well when Bradwell Institute stunned East Coweta. Everyone including Todd Holcomb was at a lost for words. You know, Bradwell Institute plays in the weak Region of 3-AAAAA. That consist of mostly Savannah Schools. But what people fail to realize is that Bradwell just play in that region just like Camden County. Before Camden County arrived, Bradwell Institute mainly dominated the Region. In addition if you check the history of Bradwell, you will see the teams we have beaten. And yes, we have Beaten Perinnial Power teams such as Valdosta, Warner Robins, Newnan, etc. even Camden County. Bradwell Institute has not won the State Title in ages but they do have one. Bradwelkl Institute has been to the South Georgia Championships in Class AAAA ( State’s Highest Classification at the time) twice. They do the potential to be great. They have been know to upset teams that are/were over confident. So you see, if Bradwell Institute do by chance beat Stephenson, it may be a shick to you all, but not to Bradwell Institute fans because Bradwell Institute is known for doing that. Bradwell Institute does play in a weak region but Bradwell Institute can contend outside the Region. It’s just that this year we have two factors against us. 1, injuries, and 2. very young and inexperienced players. But if Great Coaching is there, Bradwell Institute will be a force to reckon with.

RE: AVikingFan: If that is the case it makes it even more AMAZING that it was not caught by the “experts” at GHSA, and if they have a checks and balance system in place. Makes one wonder if someone was trying to pull a “sneaky one” and hope it would not get noticed until it was too late. It would not surprise me as there have been some very strange and shady things occur in the past in GA sports. You would be amazed at the $$$$$$$$$$ generated by high school football in GA. Trust me, I know firsthand. I honestly believe someone had an “ulterior” motive, and that was no honest mistake. I think it needs to be investigated.

Camdem will likely beat Newton…but I think you got me confused with them…Ima Title Town Baby!!! Check this out…Camden beat Windsor Forest 39-6…while Valdosta beat them 55-6. If those scores have any relation to the Camden/Lowndes game…Lowndes gonna have the JV in before the game is over.

I’m predicting a great success for Region 1-AAAAA against tis Friday. I believe that Region numbers 1 2 &3 seed will successfully win in round one. Region 1-AAAAA number 4 seed will have to battle against a very good Newnan team. I wont call that one as of yet. It will be shocking if Region 1-AAAA get a clean sweep of Region 4-AAAAA to inculde if Newnan goes one, and done……

ImaTitleTownBaby,
There is no correlation between the scores. In South Georgia, you know on any give Friday Night, a team could be beaten. One team may play another team a little tougher then the other. You will see what I’m talking this Friday. I expect the score not be close as newton County will fall to Camden County.

Buckeyeboy52,
I told Todd Holcomb, and I picked ECI to win it this year. We all know that younger sibling of Ealey and Moody have filled their older brother shoes. I pick them to do very well. Although they got hammered by Savannah Christian earlier in the season, I believe that they have gotten a lot better, and you have to realize that they have beaten Lincoln County and some other very good teams in the regular season. You have to love this South Georgia Football.

I believe if Valdosta beats Newnan…then the booster club or whoever is in control of the hiring and firing of the coaching staff will have to look into keeping Tomberlin…they shouldn’t have done him like that anyway…he’s done a good job…seeing that Valdosta’s school attendence shows 1900 students which is eqivalent to AAAA schools. How many AAAA schools would make the playoffs if they played in Region 1-AAAAA. Good job Tomberlin and the Cats.

One other thing I meant to mention. I attended the academic awards ceremony at Grayson a week ago. Slightly over 600 kids received academic letters for a *yearly* grade point average in excess of 90. This works out to about 20% of the student body got academic letters! I know there are other schools out there that do as well or better but I am proud of the school’s accomplishments! There were several of the football players that were part of this groups as well as atheletes from other sports. It is good to see that while sports are a very important part of school life, there is also an emphasis on academics. I have a lot of respect for any student that can excel in school while putting in the hours to participate in sports as well. There were about 200 that got community service awards as well and again there were atheletes that were a part of this group as well. Congratulations to *all* scholar atheletes!

Thank you, HFA. I should have double checked where Mumme coached. His version of the BYU Spread is catching on among coaches.
Offensive styles come and go. At one point everyone ran an “I”, then a Power “I”, then the “veer”. Etc. When everyone was running a veer all the championship teams ran a veer just because everyone ran it. You could just have easily have said “all the worst teams run the veer” as “all the best teams run the veer”. Wing T is just the latest fad. It offers tremendous flexibility. For example, a team can still run a triple option out of the Wing T. However, if you really want to execute the triple option, then why not just go ahead and run a wishbone?
I’m just tired of watching run offenses that consist of Dive, Off Tackle, Waggle, rinse, repeat. It can be stopped with the right defense and the right personnel. That starts with “objects in real life are larger and faster than they appear on TV”.
I think the “West Coast” offense is more interesting. I think the “bunch” is more interesting. I think the “run and shoot” is more interesting. And I think various versions of the “spread” are more interesting. Maybe that is just me.
I think both Stephenson and North Gwinnett have the personnel to stop the Wing T. And I think both teams will require opponents to have at least 4 strong DB’s or they will get cooked. Obviously, we will all just have to wait and see.
As for Uzomah? Those who know, aren’t telling. But let me tell you about Scotty Hosch, the backup. He won several county championships in little league for Buford. His brother, “Twoey”, led Buford to 2 state High School championships. He has an arm, good wheels, great vision, and good judgment. He orchestrated North’s offense in a 34 to 0 win over Duluth. If he plays, North’s Div I OT’s will give him plenty of time to make good decisions. The team really does not give up a lot with Scotty at the helm.

They were at about 1900 at the beginning of the school year…but the Valdosta School System is f*cked up…the school suspends students every week and every week students drop out…I’m willing to bet they are at that number (1820) to play with AAAA. Even Tomberlin commented on the fact that he has to compete with schools like Lowndes who have an attendance of about 3000. More athletes to pick from.

On the draw mistake, this is the first year there has been a problem. The GHSA made a change in the way the draw typically is done, but didn’t realize that the change put the #1 and #3 from two regions on the same half. When discovered, the draw was changed back to the old way of doing it. …
There is nothing fishy about this. It was an honest mistake.
As for Fitz-Buford, I did waffle a little. I think a lot of Thomasville, and for Fitz to win like that last week suggests this is a special team. Of course, Calhoun and Buford are special, too. We’ll see how it plays out.

I hope swainsboro does come to fitzgerald, it wont be 6-0 like last time defenses seem to be even, but that fitz high octane offense is gonna run their defense in the groung and in the air. we are to dimensional for any of the teams we will see. remember thomasville thought they had a good defense as well and you see what happened to them. no mercy

Todd, Why don’t GHSA rotate the playoff bracket every 7 years. Why do region 1-4 have to beat up on each other and travel down south instead of Cobb ,Fulton , and Gwinnetti Schools. THE BRACKETS should have region 1 playing 8 , 2 and 7 , 3 and 6 , 4 and 5 playing each others. Then you rotate it next year. WHY DO REGION 1-4 have do all the traveling and 5-8 plays local in the 1st round. I think it would be fair if the GWINNETTI COUNTY , COBB COUNTY , CHEROKEE COUNTY , PAULDING COUNTY, AND FULTON COUNTY SCHOOLS travel in the 1st round too down SOUTH sometime. What the different between 1st and 2nd round games you still have to travel. I would love to see region 1and 8 matchup in the 1st round instead like it is now changing every 3 years. The excuse is the travel but I think it something else. Then you would have GRAYSON VS VALDOSTA, NSWR VS BROOKWOOD, LOWNDES COUNTY VS DACULA, AND COLQUITT COUNTY VS SOUTH GWINNETTI. Other matchup STEPHENSON VS NORTH FORSYTH, MLK VS COLLINS HILL, NEWTON COUNTY VS NG AND UNION GROVES VS PEACGTREE RIDGE.2006 REGION 2 PLAYED 3 in the 1st round 2007 region 2 played 4 in the 1st round ,2008 region 2 played 1 in the 1st round and now 2009 region 2 playing region 3 again. Can we stay local like the other metro schools sometimes fair is fair rotate the bracket where every region plays each other in the 1st round once every 7 years.

AA Final 4 :
Calhoun/Lovett — Calhoun is better this year than last; Lovett beat Buford so give them the edge over Charleton; Brooks and Thomasville can’t even win their region.
Buford/Fitz – Buford is well Buford. Fitz played them last year this is their 2nd chance.
Final ===> Calhoun Vs Buford. Rematch from last year. Sorry Cane fan just not enough experience, but if you get to the dome — be ready.

I AGREE…….TRUE BLUE……110%
The whole play-off brackets are a conspiracy. They (the GSHA) always wants the North vs South game in the final. They should should rotate all 8 regions, and a Region should only play another Region in the first round every 8th year. There is to many teams in the North & South that beat each other before the Final that should be playing in the Final.

I think valdosta has no prayer in the first round against a tough newnan defense. and woodstock fans i think you may be overlooking dacula this week. they are not bad at all they have only lost to collins hill, grayson and south gwinnett. so you better take care of business before you even think about north gwinnett. we still have to beat centennial this friday as well. and oh ya region 1 takes 3 games this week but colquitt loses in the next round to stephenson.

SportsFan31313: My basis for the statement is this. You have posted on here about the numerous injuries that Bradwell has this year. Also, Stephenson is loaded with D-1 talent. On paper, this game looks like a mismatch. However, I know the game is not played on paper. I would venture to guess that due to injuries, Bradwell has not played up to their potential this year. Maybe I exaggerated the magnitude of a Bradwell win. I was in no way denigrating Bradwell. If it seemed that way, I apologize. Good luck to you on Friday night.

Now True Blue and Warhawk, don’t you go and start being logical and making common sense here. (SARCASM ALERT !) You should already see based on the big bracket screw-up that GHSA abounds with incompetentcy and ineptness. You would have thought that something as important as the brackets would have been checked and double-checked before being released. Still wonder what would have happened if it had not been discovered until AFTER the playoffs. Would any team that was denied a shot at a state championship, due to being misplaced in the bracket, have had any recourse and a possible lawsuit? Do not put anything past these school administrators and coaches when it comes to football titles in the state of Georgia !!!!

I see conspiracy theories abound. Come on people, it is a game! Lawsuits because you didn’t get a chance at a state championship? Get real. If your team is good enough to be state champion you will be state champion regardless of the brackets. If you feel like you got “cheated” due to your bracket placement, maybe your team is not as strong as you think it is. While I do believe that on any given Friday night any team can win, once you get to this level, the brackets are just the way they are and the teams all deserve to be here.
It is interesting that some of the long time knowledgeable posters aren’t complaining. They have been there enough to recognize that you play the game you are scheduled for and do the best you can. While I want (and expect
)to see Grayson in the dome, I have all the respect in the world for each of our opponents and the ones we don’t see. Grayson’s plan is to take it one week at a time and play the game in front of them without moaning about what might have been. After all, for every complaint about a particular play that could have/should have gone the other way in a game, I bet I can find another play that offsets it.
Remember, it is a game played by kids for kids.
