Too close to call: Class AAAAA has many contenders

Got rankings, got draws, got predictions, got it all.

Let’s go class by class:

AAAAA: The first round is a snooze, but the second round will be the most exciting I’ve ever seen, headlined by Lowndes vs. Camden County. Check it out below. I’m picking Lowndes to win the title, but I’m probably going to be wrong. Just too many good teams, too many realistic possibilities, to hook your wagon to one horse. I can see the Gwinnett County vs. Region 1-AAAAA rivalry heating up. It might be played out in the final (Lowndes vs. North Gwinnett or Northside vs. Grayson). Or we could see a Lowndes-Northside final. Or Grayson-North Gwinnett. Then there are the four teams that I don’t feel great about individually, but love them as a group because at last one figures to break through. Those are Lassiter, McEachern, Newnan and Stephenson. Note that Lassiter or Stephenson will make the semifinals if there are no upsets.

AAAA: No. 1 Griffin and No. 2 Southwest DeKalb have separated themselves, IMO, and I see them settling it in the final.

AAA: No. 1 Gainesville and No. 2 Carver of Columbus have separated themselves too, but can’t meet in the final because the draw is not set up that way. And unlike AAAA, this class has major third wheel in Peach County. Gainesville should face Peach in the quarterfinals and Carver in the semifinals. The coin flips for home-field advantage when those region champs meet will be big. Meanwhile, Baldwin is a hot team with a nice draw to the final. Not so high on St. Pius after last week.

AA: No. 1 Calhoun vs. No. 2 Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals? Wow. … A coin toss would decide which is the home team. Meanwhile, Buford has a sweet draw despite getting only the #2 seed in Region 6-AA. The only game I could see Buford losing until the final is a semifinal at Jefferson County, which has a great player in BJ Bostic.

A: No. 1 Wesleyan has a much better draw than No. 2 Savannah Christian. Look for Twiggs County to make the final.

Predictions … I’m putting asterisks by upsets that I couldn’t quite bring myself to predict.

Haiku-575 lets just say it will take the best of yours or any other region (just like last year). In other words a #1 seed to beat any of the teams from Region 1-5A. Don’t be bringing that 2nd, 3rd, 4th seed poopy around here thinking you are going home with a victory. The only exceptions to that “might” possibly be Woodstock and Ptree.

Haiku, Griffin and SW DeKalb have not been challenged often if at all these season. I hope they don’t get over confident and one of over looked teams hits them in the mouth. ANNIHILATION- let talk about football, physics was a long time ago for me.

Don’t forget LaGrange runs the Wing T also, not to the effect of Camden and Lowndes….we throw more than they do…But we have been equally successful at it. In my opinion, unless youre running the option out of the spread, it will go by the wayside just like the Run-n-Shoot did. Anyone have any info on Liberty County?? What type of offense and defense they run?? Don’t want to look past them for a potential second round matchup with undefeated Jackson!!!!

BulldawgBite…Ypu know not what you talk about……..Woodstock last year beat a Very Good EP team(at EP) to make to the the playoffs as a 4 seed. Traveled to Walton (1 seed) and beat them like a step child, traveled to Norcross and beat them in artic type weather, took a little trip to Camden and lost by 1 point to the eventual state champs. Had a great year this year giving up only 96 points (37 of those to McEarchern ..2nd game of the season) Since week 3 have given up on avg. 7.3 points per game. Oh by the way 4 shut outs this year.

Lowndes AAAAA
SW DeKald AAAA
Carver-Col.AAA
Fitzgerald AA
Wesleyan A

Truth is Region 1-AA has nothing to brag about — no championships in the last 10 (or more) years, I’m not sure they were even runner ups. Buford & Charleton have dominated, with Calhoun runner ups 2 of the last 4 years. No experience. If one of their teams made it to the dome it would blow their mind.

Last week Todd claims it would take a multi-dimentional team to beat Buford, this week a waffle.

Rematch in the AA Championship game.

The whole play-off brackets are a conspiracy. They (the GSHA) always wants the North vs South game in the final. They should should rotate all 8 regions, and a Region should only play another Region in the first round every 8th year. There is to many teams in the North that beat each other before the Final that should be playing in the Final.

Watching Valdosta saturday night Valdosta is far from done The Cats have been clicking on all cylinders since the last region loss,Colquitt won’t be the surprise team in the playoffs ,Valdosta will ……..I wouldn’t put this one as an upset Alert either.

AViking Fan, you’re so full of crap. Nobody gouged Greg Reid’s eyes. If you’ve got film proof, put it on Youtube next to the video’s showing Lowndes repeated unsportsmanlike play. The only hands near a helmet was when pemberton was tackled in the 4th qtr and his helmet ripped off by Solomon and Reid while he was on the ground and Soloman taking swings at our players, for which he was ejected and was pointed out on slow motion replays on the televised broadcast. Also, most of your players played both ways last year, including the 2 at Florida State. Where were all your juniors then? The majority of our players who actually played in that game were juniors. See you at the dome.

Good post eagleforlife. 1-AAAAA looks good for the games this week. Valdosta has vastly improved week by week, but hey, they looked good against Northside also. The receiver turned QB, the baseball player named Chad Prain, has done an outstanding job the last two weeks, and makes their offense much more versatile. DeShay March and Avery Burney returned to practice this week and could provide the spark needed to get by Newnan.

George Gipp – Let’s agree to end this argument in the dome. We’ll try to do our part to get there. Grayson will have to get by Northside in the semis for their part. We’ve got to get by Camden 1st, and that will be hard to do AT CAMDEN.

pride will ride in dec, so i guess what your saying is that d-1 talent equates to wins in hs… now how would you explain what happened last year against the EXTREMELY talented lowndes team. If its a “breeze” how come nobody has been able to stop it. Let me throw you a statistic, Grayson is the only school in AAAAA that has NOT lost a regular season game in the past 2 years. Thats 20 games, They have 20 game win streak at home as well.

To the ignorant post from a disgruntled lowndes fan, Grayson is not living in the past. They are simply stating the facts, we beat a nationally ranked lowndes team and were clearly the better team. If anything lowndes lives in the past by relying on the arguement that they have won state more times than grayson… so you tell me whose living in the past.

My word, there seems to be nothing left to post. Apparently, Grayson has won this deal. Maybe the ignorant southern Georgia teams should just back out of this entire race. Isn’t it a little silly to even waste the gas? For our former fifth graders to even get on the bus is blasphemy and an argument built in play-doh. Maybe Lowndes and Camden should be satisfied with the titles we won from the past.

In all seriousness, lets get this ironed out. The only game where any of this talk counts is on the weekend of December 11th – 12th. After that, to the winner goes the spoils. If that is Lowndes, Grayson, Camden or another unknown, so be it. I don’t know about any other teams outside of 1-AAAAA, but if they are this far, quality of the team is not an issue.

In a “reply-to-all” of the Grayson fans, of sorts, let me say this. Last year was a horrible way to leave a game. There is not a Lowndes fan that enjoyed that. Every Lowndes fan that wants to go back to your house and play it the right way. The team set their season up on redemption. Over confidence on your part, would not be recommended.

I wasn’t at the game, but the people that were told of how awful it was. The officiating was horrid the fight was borderline retarded and the kids emotions got away from them. Unfortunately, most of the officiating in high school stinks. They just don’t have the resources college and pros do. They even stink at our stadium. That being said, we can blame it on the refs, attitudes, and emotions, but that doesn’t amount to anything after 60 minutes. We lost and now Lowndes wants to even up the series. Wherever it will be played.

We do however have to rely on our team this year. Not just one person. Greg is a great player, and even though Grayson thought he was a thug, (and he probably is), he is playing for FSU on Saturdays now. He is gone. One post asked where these supposed athletes came from. Greg’s shadow? Maybe. Lowndes relied on him too much last year, and it hurt us in the end. If Todd refers to Warner Robins as the best team not to make the playoffs, Lowndes beat them with two of our star players out. The philosphy is if one man goes down, another one steps up.

But that is okay. Just keep in your minds that our athletes are playing on both sides because we don’t have enough skilled athletes….Right?

Lowndes got to where they are by winning and doing it on a consistent basis. When I went to Lowndes, we were lucky to win a few games, when they started winning, the mindset changed. We know what it is like to be on the losing end. The kids playing now have grown to hate losing and they need a loss every now and again to bring them back to reality. i.e. Grayson 2008, NSWR 2009.

If the cards fall in our favor, Lowndes will welcome the match. As for now, they have East Coweta to worry about. One game at a time.

Grayson Student ………..History lesson , 1997 Northside defeats a highly ranked Lowndes team , 1999 Lowndes returns the favor and defeats a undefeated and highly ranked Northside team , 2009 Northside defeats a nationally ranked Lowndes team…….The 1999 Northside squad was the best in schools history and one of the best ever in GHSA in my opinion…….Was Lowndes a better team in 1999 ? No!…..But that night they were…….Is Northside a better team in 2009 than Lowndes probably not, but Northside was better on Oct 2nd……..Grayson defeats Lowndes in 2008 …..Was Grayson a better team in 2008 ? I don’t think so ,but that playoff night they were……….The point is , Grayson is legit ,but that was you guys first legitiment win ,and it put you guys on the map ,any given friday the best of teams can lose ,2008 is gone ,Reid and Demps are Noles now,the big fight is over and forgotten ,except by you Grayson Folks….time to give it a rest ,it’s like pulling the scab from a wound…..believe me if Conn keeps doing what he’s doing over the next few seasons ,there will be more to talk about than a single good win.

GRAYRAM – I think REESE meant in region play, but WHATEVER, it is a new season now, and it’s do or die from here on out. It’s not about last year or even the regular season. It’s about this coming Friday. Grayson will surely beat Marietta, and then will get by Roswell, though it won’t be easy. Then Grayson will defeat either Newnan or Valdosta, and then flip a coin to decide where it will meet Northside. My crystal balls has the game being played in Warner Robins, and Grayson coming out on top. (they won’t say their winning steak is broken because they don’t count some games, you know, like when they go don’t their way. Then my crystal ball shows Grayson playing Lowndes or Camden in front of a huge crowd in the Georgia Dome, and losing.

O.K. this bracket screw-up thing has me wondering now. If it was wrong this year, was it also wrong last year? Does anybody still have a copy of the 2008 bracket or know where to get one to check it out? Does anyone know if the brackets were setup last year the same as they were originally this year? If so, did it affect any teams in a negative way, and do they have any recourse, such as a protest? Just something to think about and take a look at. The article today about a fan discovering the error makes it a lot clearer, but still does not explain how it occurred and what ramifications it would have had this year if caught after the playoffs, and how long has it been that way. I learned really early in life if you accept things and do not ask questions, these things will just be swept under the rug and ignored hoping they will go away. Maybe the AJC might could do some probing on this.

REESE great post at 11:43 pm. That’s about as plain as it can be said. Good luck Friday. Glad neither of us is having to travel. Hope Valdosta keeps it going. This new qb seems pretty good for them.
Colquitt SHOULD be ok, but you can never tell this time of the year. Travel, emotions, fan support, players being teenagers, etc. Hopefully like the guy said, we can SWEEP.
