Got rankings, got draws, got predictions, got it all.
Let’s go class by class:
AAAAA: The first round is a snooze, but the second round will be the most exciting I’ve ever seen, headlined by Lowndes vs. Camden County. Check it out below. I’m picking Lowndes to win the title, but I’m probably going to be wrong. Just too many good teams, too many realistic possibilities, to hook your wagon to one horse. I can see the Gwinnett County vs. Region 1-AAAAA rivalry heating up. It might be played out in the final (Lowndes vs. North Gwinnett or Northside vs. Grayson). Or we could see a Lowndes-Northside final. Or Grayson-North Gwinnett. Then there are the four teams that I don’t feel great about individually, but love them as a group because at last one figures to break through. Those are Lassiter, McEachern, Newnan and Stephenson. Note that Lassiter or Stephenson will make the semifinals if there are no upsets.
AAAA: No. 1 Griffin and No. 2 Southwest DeKalb have separated themselves, IMO, and I see them settling it in the final.
AAA: No. 1 Gainesville and No. 2 Carver of Columbus have separated themselves too, but can’t meet in the final because the draw is not set up that way. And unlike AAAA, this class has major third wheel in Peach County. Gainesville should face Peach in the quarterfinals and Carver in the semifinals. The coin flips for home-field advantage when those region champs meet will be big. Meanwhile, Baldwin is a hot team with a nice draw to the final. Not so high on St. Pius after last week.
AA: No. 1 Calhoun vs. No. 2 Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals? Wow. … A coin toss would decide which is the home team. Meanwhile, Buford has a sweet draw despite getting only the #2 seed in Region 6-AA. The only game I could see Buford losing until the final is a semifinal at Jefferson County, which has a great player in BJ Bostic.
A: No. 1 Wesleyan has a much better draw than No. 2 Savannah Christian. Look for Twiggs County to make the final.
Predictions … I’m putting asterisks by upsets that I couldn’t quite bring myself to predict.

We’ve re-worked the brackets (and predictions) up top to reflect the changes the GHSA announced this morning.
I’ve decided that since Buford must play Fitz on the road in the semis that Fitz is suddenly favored. So I’ve jinxed Fitz with my new prediction!

Greetings HomeFieldAdvantage,
What a very nice invitation, and this is the second time you have given me such a great offer. I very much would love to accept your offer, and attend but unfortunately the family is not hearing that. I can’t even part my lips and say that we are going to Valdosta to see Lowndes County play a school that be hammered by Lowndes County when we have our own team to support in the “A” “T” “L” area. I will never hear the end of that. So unfortuately i will be traveling to Stone Mountain and pull for Bradwell Institute. They will need all of the Fan support that they can get.
What I will say and I want Stephenson Fans to know is that while some of the Stephenson Fans are saying and thinking that Stephenson will just “BREEZE THROUGH” Bradwell Insttute in this first round had better think again. While I know that Bradwell Insitute may not win this game for obvious reasons that I have been mentioning weeks ago, I would not go as far as to say that it will be a “BREEZE THROUGH”.
You may want to know, no matter how bad Bradwell Insitute have played against some of these South Georgia teams, Bradwell Institute have never been a push over on a North Georgia or a Breeze Through to a North Georgia team. Although Bradwell Institute players are injured, and they are a very young team, I will say that they will come, and play with their hearts. While I do respect, and I know how good Stephenson have been over the years, and this year, I’m sure that Stephenson will not just breeze through Bradwell Institute. You can tell that to “grayram”, and the fans of Stephenson.
Unfortunately AViking fan, I wont be able to attend. Thank you very much for the invite. You are indeed a class act…… Although east Coweta is good this year, Lowndes County will have no problem with East Coweta. Remember Bradwell Institute beat them last year in the first round.

YES IT DOES. IT CLEARS UP THE QUESTIONS AS TO WHY 1ST AND 3RD WERE ON THE SAME SIDE AND 2ND AND 4TH WERE ON THE SAME SIDE. Now as it should be 1st and 4th are on the same side and 2nd and 3rd are on the same side.
I just found out our highschool principal and head coach brought it up Sunday with a meeting with all the AAAAA playoff teams and GHSA admitted that was an error and corrected it 1st thing today. 1st place team Northside should not have been in the same bracket as the 2nd or 3rd place team from their same region. GHSA playoff bylaws.
But now Northside is on the same side as McEachern, Grayson, Newnan, Peachtree Ridge, Roswell, MLK, etc. As Reese said, for Lowndes and Grayson to play it can only be in the dome.

I’m sure Grayson had some players talking trash down on the field but the fighting that night was mostly Lowndes. If Greg Reid couldn’t see then the force must be really strong in his family because he most of the plays for Lowndes on both sides of the ball.

If Jefferson County and Bostic rip off and throw their helmets into the ground like they did against Dublin, (and with a playoff crew of officials), they wont last long after half the team is ejected, as they should be! I believe if the coach had on a helmet, he would have ripped his off and slung it too!

Not many are giving us a chance, but if we punch them in the mouth early, and dominate time of possesion with ball control, I excpect a very good game. I don’t see Northside getting by McEachern; and, the Grayson vs Newnan game will be a great one, unless one stumbles along the way. I wonder why EagleNationRising isn’t going livid on the blogs about this bracket change. So far only Reese has spoken up from Northside. Wouldn’t it be something if Northside plays Peachtree Ridge with all the negative stuff ENR’s said this year about the Ridge?

Sportsfan 31313, nice to see your coming North to support your team as I will be heading South to support Newton. Man Stephenson is playing lights out right now, a lot of people are overlooking this team. Good luck to your guys, but I feel Stephenson has the best chance of any team from our region to win it all, so I roll with them. Hope the general lack of competition they have faced doesn’t bite them against Colquitt, who I think edges Westlake, but not by much. As for my Rams, if we are mentally prepared and ready, I think we give Camden a tough game, but Im worried about our ability to score on them. We have struggled against strong DEF this year, and to say Camden has a strong defense is clearly an understatement. Anyway good luck Rams, Ill be there and Im looking forward to going to Camden Co. to cheer you on. As for Eastside HS (8AAA champs) I dont think there is a region champ with a tougher potential RD2 matchup. Playing a fast veteran Towers team is tough for a first round matchup, but either Creekview or Carrollton( both 9-1) next week? WOW. Good thing Eastside is familar with both teams, having beat them consecutive weeks in last years
playoffs. Flipside is Eastside had probably their best team in school history last year, while Creekview was playing their first ever playoff game and Carrollton was down. But Carrollton was 9-0 last week Top 5 , I can see how Todd picked them this is a young Eastside team but dont sleep on Eastside they lost to Newton/ Alcovy 2 higher class playoff teams. Playoff time is here good luck to all supporters.

Thanks Todd for your comment to my friend Sportsfan31313. Valdosta grinded our head into that country boy “county” stuff for years. they even had a slogan one year “Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be Plowboys.” We finally turned it around on them, and rally around the word “Plowboy”. But we still like to be called Lowndes High School, in respect to the three schools who came together during integration days to form the present high school, and layed to rest the old segregated Lowndes County High School.

I am a Packer supporter. Colquitt County must find a way to come out of the dressing room fired up and ready to play. They are as good a second half team around. They would have won that game if they had played the first half like they played the second half. Very exciting game, despite the fact the officials made a grave error in awarding Northside the ball after 3 downs rather than 4 in the first half. Colquitt would have scored at least 3 points had they had the chance to kick a 20 yard field goal on 4th down. The outcome might have been effected. Northside’s film bears that out.

Oh well, East Cow. and Camden first. Then we’ll know.
Grayson if you should have to travel to Northside (and its possible)
don’t count your chickens before they hatch.
Maybe I should say don’t count your ramlets before they are birthed.

In my opinion Lowndes is still the favorite. The road to the finals was not going to be easy in either bracket. They just have too play fewer Gwinnett teams in the current brackets.
If they get past North Gwinnett in the quarter finals, their potential semi finals match up is a little easier. I was looking forward to a Lowndes – Peachtree Ridge and a Grayson – Lowndes rematch but I guess I will have to settle for a North Gwinnett – Lowndes rematch instead.

Now that GHSA has bowed to the wishes of those who hold the “power stick” that should give Todd/AJC a good opportunity to not only go back and change his predictions, but also to change his rankings. He would have a good excuse now. Not only are the AAAAA rankings biased toward NGA, with only 3 teams in the top 10( 1 in the top 5), but AAAA is even worse, with only 2 South GA teams in the top 10. I knew the AJC was a very liberal newspaper and thrived on being PC, but did not realize it bled over into the sports department. Who knows, maybe even the GHSA is trying to be PC, and realign the brackets so as not to hurt the feelings of those who squeal the loudest.

Astute Observer – Grayson would be favored over Lowndes therefore could not “upset” them. Remember, Grayson has been ranked number one for five or six weeks now. Lowndes finished the season tied with Northside for 1st place but under Region 1-AAAAA rules became the runnersup, thus a 2nd place seeded team and Grayson is a 1st place seeded team. (There was a time when our region actually voted on the region champ when teams ended the season tied. One year Colquitt was “voted out” and Valdosta went on to the playoffs.) But I would like our chances against Grayson in a rematch of last year’s game, especially at the Dome.
