Too close to call: Class AAAAA has many contenders

Got rankings, got draws, got predictions, got it all.

Let’s go class by class:

AAAAA: The first round is a snooze, but the second round will be the most exciting I’ve ever seen, headlined by Lowndes vs. Camden County. Check it out below. I’m picking Lowndes to win the title, but I’m probably going to be wrong. Just too many good teams, too many realistic possibilities, to hook your wagon to one horse. I can see the Gwinnett County vs. Region 1-AAAAA rivalry heating up. It might be played out in the final (Lowndes vs. North Gwinnett or Northside vs. Grayson). Or we could see a Lowndes-Northside final. Or Grayson-North Gwinnett. Then there are the four teams that I don’t feel great about individually, but love them as a group because at last one figures to break through. Those are Lassiter, McEachern, Newnan and Stephenson. Note that Lassiter or Stephenson will make the semifinals if there are no upsets.

AAAA: No. 1 Griffin and No. 2 Southwest DeKalb have separated themselves, IMO, and I see them settling it in the final.

AAA: No. 1 Gainesville and No. 2 Carver of Columbus have separated themselves too, but can’t meet in the final because the draw is not set up that way. And unlike AAAA, this class has major third wheel in Peach County. Gainesville should face Peach in the quarterfinals and Carver in the semifinals. The coin flips for home-field advantage when those region champs meet will be big. Meanwhile, Baldwin is a hot team with a nice draw to the final. Not so high on St. Pius after last week.

AA: No. 1 Calhoun vs. No. 2 Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals? Wow. … A coin toss would decide which is the home team. Meanwhile, Buford has a sweet draw despite getting only the #2 seed in Region 6-AA. The only game I could see Buford losing until the final is a semifinal at Jefferson County, which has a great player in BJ Bostic.

A: No. 1 Wesleyan has a much better draw than No. 2 Savannah Christian. Look for Twiggs County to make the final.

Predictions … I’m putting asterisks by upsets that I couldn’t quite bring myself to predict.

Howdy Sportsfan31313 – Thanks for the confidence. I will be pulling pulling as hard for Bradwell as I will for my Vikings. Also pulling for valdosta, and all 1-AAAAA teams and 3-AAAAA teams. I, for one, think Windsor Forest is vastly improved since it’s game with Valdosta. (But let’s don’t forget that Valdosta has some very good players.) Windsor and Bradwell both just might bring it home! If those two, along with 1-AAAAA sweeps, it will be a glorious night for South georgia Football. (Camden, not mentioned, will of course win)

I’m not sure about the total sweep, but we might have done it last year. No, I think Tift lost in the 1st round to Newnan. Coffee, Northside and Lowndes advanced though if my memory serves me well.

Maybe Todd Holcomb can look that up and tell us if all four teams in a region have ever swept the 1st round. That guy will know or can find it if any classification has ever done it.

I’m counting on Grayson, South Gwinnett, North Gwinnett, PRidge, Buford, Wesleyan. And hoping for Brookwood and Collins Hill. Could be 8 1st round wins !!!

Sportsfan31313- I predict the final 8 will be Northside, Peachtree Ridge (man wonder what EagleNationRising will say about that) Newnan (hope it’s Valdosta), Grayson, N. Gwinnett, Lowndes, Lassiter, and Stephenson (they’d better watch out for Colquitt though).

The final 4 will be Northside, Grayson, Lowndes, and Lassiter

Grayson and Lowndes will settle things in a “turf war.”

Hope this rain will be gone by Friday. I’m looking forward to an exciting first round of playoffs. If I can get my wife out of the nightmare known as Hartsfield-Jackson, I’ll be in Newnan to see the final game of the Rick Tomberlin era at Valdosta High School. Wonder if VHS regrets firing Mike O’Brien?
BROOKWOOD MOM: Count me in with the Broncos as well.

go ug – Know what you mean about the cost of gas. My Lowndes team will HAVE THE PLEASURE (we’re trying hard not to be negative about traveling – EagleNationrising has us a little sensitive about that) of traveling to Camden, North Gwinnett, Lassiter, and the dome. We’re having bake sales, yard sales, raffles, and writing letters to card holders, banks, and the power company telling them going to playoff games is more important than paying them this month. (We’ll pay our cell phone bills though so we can jabber to other fans in the motorcades going to games.) Wish it was still summer, might could get the wife to cut the neighbor’s yards. Well, no, second thought, scratch that.

BUT AIN’T IT FUN! I WONDER IF THOSE KIDS KNOW HOW MUCH PLEASURE THEY’RE GIVING US OLD GEEZERS!

Suwanee: OK we accept your “apology” and your offer for AJC to remove the post. I guess the Blog Patrol is off today. Hope your day has gotten better and you gave yourself a good paycheck.

Fred: Thanks for your sincere comments .. believe me, I know what you are talking about with the academic thing, and I totally agree. Now, about admitting you’re a Tech nerd … !

To all, re. academics vs. athletics. I’ll bet we can agree on this … none of the schools can compete academically the way they can athletically, on the field of play. And if they could, we all know that 10,000+ fans wouldn’t show up to watch it.

Thursday is almost here, that means Friday is almost here … good fortune and good health and safe travel to all teams, bands, cheerleaders and fans this weekend.

Btw, the Ph.D from Univ. of Antarctica was an online, mail-in thang! And I am now officially Dr. Goober!

Dr Goober, I have no doubt you are an official goober ha ha. Just glad you’re “with us” and not “agin us”. A good friend of mine’s son (named Ben P) used to write on here a lot, For awhile I thought you might be him. Boghey reminds me of him also. He’s a senior at VSU. Bleeds crimson red Viking blood. Me and his dad go way back.

Dr. Goober

November 11th, 2009

HomeField: You are so right about Grayson. They thrived (throve?) on that cold wet slow grass field of theirs last Thanksgiving (with very nice facilities), with their style of offense perfectly suited. Maybe on that fast Dome turf the Vikings will have a better chance … of course East Coweta, Camden etc are standing in the way.

Something tells me Woodstock will be a big factor this year, since they are now fully “O’Brien-ated”.

Here’s hoping those in charge of coaching at Valdosta will just admit they made a mistake, they are sorry, and they want Tomberlin to stay. If only they would go out to the practice field and ask the players who THEY would like to have as their coach. Now wouldn’t that be a novel idea … the possibility that the kids might have a better feel for this than the adults?

HomeFieldAdvantage

Grayson Student – take it to the bank. We are looking ahead to Camden. The good thing is none of us play on Friday nights. McPherson will have the players ready for East Coweta I can promise you. I talked ot a bunch of’em last night. This next game (1st playoff game) is like the Sugar Bowl to them. They really bad want to (as EagleNationRising is so famous for saying) “Peachtree Ridge” East Coweta. In plain talk, ambush’em and massacre’em. I’m sure they are a good team. heck they’re AAAAA and in the playoffs. And they’ll line up 11 against our 11. (Unless it’s like last week when we only had nine guys on the field when Warner Robins lined up to punt – we still blocked it and scored, yes, with 9 B-Team players!

Dr. Goober it would be wonderful if the powers behind the scenes at Valdosta would tell the Supt they had made a mistake, and apologize ti him, and invite him back.

If Valdosta used the same standards for education as they do for football success, the Valdosta School Board would surely fire the principal , his staff, most of the teachers, and the superintendent.

They’ll NEVER get a better coach or role model than the one they have now.

And think how they’ll feel if the Cats beat Newnan, and then MLK, and then …

There no more Bazemores or Hyders out there. And everybody, including Lowndes, has caught up with or passed the Cats … for now. But we all know how quickly things can change in this game, especially in this city.

Good luck Wildcats and Coach Tomberlin. I’m sure you will represent Winnersville and TitleTown, USA very well.

These are my Predictions for the Class AAA Playoffs:
First Round:
1) Peach Co D. 4) Spalding
2) Washington Co. D. 3) Troup
1) St.Pius X D. 4)Franklin Co
2) North Hall D. 3)Ringgold
4) Monroe D. 1) Jackson
2) LaGrange D. 3) Liberty Co
1) Eastside D. 4) Towers
2) Carrollton D. 3) Creekview
1) Gainesville D. 4) Lakeview F.O.
2) Dunwoody D. 3) Elbert Co
1) Baldwin D. 4) Northside, Columbus
2) Cairo D. 3) Woodland
1) Ridgeland D. 4) Flowery Branch
3) Grady D. 2) Hart Co
1) Carver D. 4) Burke Co
2) Woodward Academy D. 3) Worth Co

Second Round:
1) Peach Co D. 2) Washington Co
1) St. Pius X D. 2) North Hall
2) LaGrange D. 4) Monroe
1) Eastside D. 2) Carrollton
1) Gainesville D. 2) Dunwoody
1) Baldwin D. 2) Cairo
1) Ridgeland D. 3) Grady
1) Carver D. 2) Woodward Academy

Third Round (Elite 8):
1) Peach Co D. 1) St. Pius X – St. Pius X will lose this one in a close game, but the can not match Peach Co’s speed and athletes.
1) Eastside D. 2) LaGrange – You have a great Defense in LaGrange verses a very good Offense in Eastside, but Eastside will prevail in the when it comes down to the 4th quarter.
1) Gainesville D. 1) Baldwin – Gainesville has the best Offense that I have seen in the state, but Baldwin still has some weapons from last years great Defense. Whoever has home-field advantage in this matchup should take this one, but I am going with the might Red Elephants in this one.
1) Carver D. 1) Ridgeland – The great Carver Defense has not skipped a beat from last years Final Four apperence, but Ridgeland is just a small task in there way as they cruise to an easy win.

Fourth Round (Final 4):
1) Peach Co. D. 1) Eastside – Peach’s speed on Defense is going to be a wake up call to Eastside because there region was weak this year and they did not face a Defense like Peach Co. I will see the Trojans of Peach Co. in the Georgia Dome for the finals.
1) Gainesville D. 1) Carver – The match up that everyone has been waiting on will occur a round sooner than people thought, but it will be a true slugfest as Gainesville has revenge in the back of there minds because of what happened last year when Carver beat the Red Elephants 28-14 in Columbus. This is really going to depend on where this game is played at, if it is played in Gainesville, expect the Red Elephants to be packing up for the Dome on December 12th. If the game is played in Columbus, it is gonna be a true dogfight like last years game. The winner of this game has a true chance of winning the Class AAA Title.

Fifth Round (Championship Game):
1) Gainesville VS 1) Peach Co – The true battle between North VS. South and two teams that have been #1 and #2 in the AAA pole throughout the majority of the year. This is a matchup of teams that mirror each other exactly on the field from size, speed, and athletes. This game will be played in the Georgia Dome, so there is going to be no room for excuses if some fans like to blame things on the cold Northeast Georgia weather. It is going to come down to good ole’ Coaching, Gainesville brings a great Coach in Bruce Miller who has made the playoffs every year since he has been coaching at Gainesville since 2001. Peach Co. brings third year coach Chad Campbell, Campbell has been to the playoffs his first two years at Peach, but they have failed to make it past the first round. Gainesville is more disciplined and well coached than Peach Co. I am going with the Mighty Red Elephants of Gainesville as they bring home the first state Championship in there schools history!

Big j, we do have some injuries, I don’t want to put it on the blog. We will see what our guys are made of this week. Are you going to the game?

HomeField, our guys looked really good against Stephenson up until the 3rd quarter. The bad spot by the ref on 4th and 4 really halted our momentum. If Stephenson plays up to their capabilites they will be a force in these playoffs. Our offense didn’t even show up for the MLK game. We didn’t look good at all. I sure hope we have a good showing Friday night or that will be a much LONGER RIDE HOME!

Let’s see, why not just let the top two AAAAA Region 1 teams play each other for the state title? I mean, reading the usual posts, there is no sense in letting the others even bother showing up. No, no, wait. Let’s just let Lowndes and Valdosta play each other this year for the title. I mean, let them play each other EVERY year for the title. These football experts are right, you know. Hey Yo did you actually see the Camden-Newnan game it was closer than the score you would think that some people would actually watch a game before commenting on it…… fumbles 1 not caused by defensive intervention (unforced) created one of the three TD’s in the first quarter the other was a fourth down flukish play… Hey it happens… you know sometimes the ball bounces your way it did for Camden; they never sustained a drive starting from there side of the field all night, the Newnan Defense was the only group that showed up that night…. The Camden County Wildcats were the better team that night they went on to prove it with a state championship…. You cannot be comparing Valdosta to Camden or are you? Two losses to Camden, yes, but do you forget that in the 2003 playoffs Newnan faced Colquitt Co. in the first round and NS Warner Robins in the second rd…before losing to the State Champs-to-be, Camden, at the dome. Did I mention that Newnan blanked the 2nd ranked Northside team 24-0…at the “feared” MAC. At the Dome (against Camden) Newnan played without its most recruited receiver and their number 2 receiver pulled his hamstring during the first offensive drive. This was a year that Newnan started 4 receivers with what was arguably AAAAA’s most prolific passing offense to date. Despite the injuries (which just so happened to follow a playoff schedule comprised of Colquitt, no.2 NSWR at the MAC, and no.3 Parkview at/in “The Jungle,” where they had been undefeated during the three previous seasons…all of which they took the title) Newnan was in the lead through half-time, but the damage due to those injuries was too much for Newnan to overcome. Camden had the most athletic team in the state (hell, probably the country) and they won the game on neutral turf by a touchdown, I believe. I know that they played VALDOSTA, at Valdosta, in the championship. I cannot remember the score…but I know that the differential was greater than that of Camden/Newnan.

Newnan will be destroyed by Valdosta. Newnan has played nothing but weak sisters all year. They will now be exposed.

No inthatrenches some one simply said Newnan’s defense was better than any of the defenses of the teams of 1AAAAA.

I simply asked from what did they base that observation?

Of course that person never replied to my question?

A ferocious defense like all say Newnan has should have bowed up when it counted against Camden is what I’m thinking.

We’ll see. Newnan has played no one. just pansy teams. The only legitimate team they played is a 3A team. Sorry Newnan is going down. I’m not from region 1 I’m a region 5 supporter. and 3 of our 4 playoff team would destory that “great” newnan defesne haha.

Lowndes loss to NSWR makes it tougher on opponents(remember ware co loss in 2007). While I would love to see a 1-AAAAA sweep, I think NSWR is ripe for an upset. Valdosta missed 5 field goals to lose at the end of the game, Lowndes has a winning touchdown called back as time expires, Colquitt has winning drive stopped by incompetent referees. If NsWR had three wishes, they have used them all up.While an excellent football team with great coaching they better be careful….
