Got rankings, got draws, got predictions, got it all.
Let’s go class by class:
AAAAA: The first round is a snooze, but the second round will be the most exciting I’ve ever seen, headlined by Lowndes vs. Camden County. Check it out below. I’m picking Lowndes to win the title, but I’m probably going to be wrong. Just too many good teams, too many realistic possibilities, to hook your wagon to one horse. I can see the Gwinnett County vs. Region 1-AAAAA rivalry heating up. It might be played out in the final (Lowndes vs. North Gwinnett or Northside vs. Grayson). Or we could see a Lowndes-Northside final. Or Grayson-North Gwinnett. Then there are the four teams that I don’t feel great about individually, but love them as a group because at last one figures to break through. Those are Lassiter, McEachern, Newnan and Stephenson. Note that Lassiter or Stephenson will make the semifinals if there are no upsets.
AAAA: No. 1 Griffin and No. 2 Southwest DeKalb have separated themselves, IMO, and I see them settling it in the final.
AAA: No. 1 Gainesville and No. 2 Carver of Columbus have separated themselves too, but can’t meet in the final because the draw is not set up that way. And unlike AAAA, this class has major third wheel in Peach County. Gainesville should face Peach in the quarterfinals and Carver in the semifinals. The coin flips for home-field advantage when those region champs meet will be big. Meanwhile, Baldwin is a hot team with a nice draw to the final. Not so high on St. Pius after last week.
AA: No. 1 Calhoun vs. No. 2 Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals? Wow. … A coin toss would decide which is the home team. Meanwhile, Buford has a sweet draw despite getting only the #2 seed in Region 6-AA. The only game I could see Buford losing until the final is a semifinal at Jefferson County, which has a great player in BJ Bostic.
A: No. 1 Wesleyan has a much better draw than No. 2 Savannah Christian. Look for Twiggs County to make the final.
Predictions … I’m putting asterisks by upsets that I couldn’t quite bring myself to predict.

I do not see Buford making it to the finals this year. I saw them in a game this year and usually see them every year. And the Buford team this year is the weakest team that I have seen in years. They will get tripped up in probably the 2nd or 3rd or 4th round of the playoffs.

Valdosta Dawg, I feel that Valdosta can beat Newnan if they bribg their A game. They were competitive with Northside Warner Robins and should have beat them. That game gave me great insight into Valdosta’s potential. Newnan plays in a weak region but they are still a good football team. I think Valdosta will upset Newnan.

I thought with my old Alma Mata, E.C.I. losing all those great players, Ealey, Lanier, and Moody, they wouldn’t do well this season. Well, I was wrong, and glad to be. Coach Turner is showing he is a terrific coach, and I understand there’s another Ealey there.
That being said, I believe Wesleyan will take it all in A….They looked awsome in the Dome last year, but………..Washaun was only about 65% in that game!!!! Go E.C.I. “DAWGS”!!!!

I think that Peach County can beat Gainsville, because they have a grind it out offense. Even though their fans cry when they lose I think that Lagrange can beat Baldwin. But no one will beat Carver. The offense and defense are clicking. Too, many good players and great coaching.

Based on his rankings for AAAAA, Todd is obviously a North Georgia Yankee. Wow is that top heavy with NGA teams or what? Also he has Lowndes ranked much higher than a team that beat them. You can just throw out that one loss Northside/WR has. That is always a bloody war in Warner Robins and can go either way. Don’t be surprised if there is at least 3 teams in the semifinals from 1-AAAAA, and maybe even all four !! Todd, you should have gone with your upset in the 2nd round. No way Stephenson beats Colquitt Co’s Packers. There’s your sleeper right there, flying in under the radar.

I just hope Lowndes beats East Coweta this Friday. My crystal ball is too cloudy to see beyond one game at a time. But I do appreciate Mr. Todd’s confidence for picking us to win the title (THANKS), well not really confidence because he went on to say we’d probably get upset. But still, he did pick us to win.
I agree with the person who said Valdosta could also win this Friday in Newnan. They lost to Northside 16-13, missed three field goals and one extra point when their kicker had a hip pointer, and defeated Warner Robins at the MAC. I think they are very capable of beating Newnan. Like EagleNationRising is so famous for doing, I am putting Newnan on upset alert.
Other possible upset are Windsor Forest vs Union Grove, Colquitt vs Westlake and Etowah vs South Gwinnett.

Some of these south Georgia people are getting silly with this superior 1-AAAAA talk. Valdosta will not beat Newnan. Let’s take a look at Valdosta’s schedule. They beat 2 weak teams out of 3-AAAAA. They beat a 2-8 Jonesboro team. They lost every game against a winning team except for Warner Robins who didn’t make the playoffs. You talk about a weak schedule. They’ll face a real team Friday and it won’t be close.

look for south gwinnett to beat lassiter in round two. this is a very good team no one is talking about. their only loss is to grayson and they had 2 touchdowns called back and they were on the road. they have an outstanding offense led by kent rollins. round 2 will be a shootout between those two teams.

Valdosta Dawg Ask Tift about coming to Newnan last year they got some undue (region1) respect up till halftime then the wheels fell off
Camden came here with the weak region argument you region 1 guy’s always make and took Newnan down on the way to the Championship the region vs region argument should be squashed Most regions have 1 dominant team you guy’s have two (Lowndes and NSWR) that really is the only difference the other teams are respectable but very beatable Congrats to Valdosta they are very respected and I am sure the Newnan faithful and team know this but when kickoff occurs all bets are off and it will be like any other Friday night football game in Georgia….

”Why, after all of these weeks, do you finally put Chattooga in the top 10 when you are picking them to lose in the first round? That makes absolutely no sense.”
Chattoogatrion: I’m picking the No. 6 team in the state to beat the No. 10 team in the state. Why doesn’t that make sense?
“I don’t care if it is Rec ball or HS going undefeated playing teams like Clarke Central, Loganville, Rockdale and Winder Barrow, ok maybe not Winder Barrow, you must have a good team.”
Apalachee is a good team. We agree about that. I just don’t expect them to beat Marist.
“Based on his rankings for AAAAA, Todd is obviously a North Georgia Yankee. Wow is that top heavy with NGA teams or what?”
Class AAAAA is top heavy with NGA teams overall. The rankings reflect that.
“I think the Chattooga Indians will be better than a one and done team. it’s hard to get respect outside the metro areas.”
Do you notice who Chattooga is playing?
Calhoun is from Chattooga’s neck of the woods. They are ranked No. 1. This has nothing to do with where your school is located. It has to do with qualify of wins and history of success. I don’t think anyone outside of NW Georgia is picking Chattooga to beat Lovett.

Of course they have to beat Westlake first, but that is a given, even if CCHS is a lower seed. Lower seed in a strong region beats a higher seed in a weak region.
TO TODD/AJC: The fact that NGA has more AAAAA teams should have no bearing whatsoever on the rankings. It should not be based on quantity, but QUALITY. Please tell me you don’t do that???

Valdosta has a NEW QB the past two weeks, who replaced the original starting QB that got himself into a tad of “DISCIPLINARY PROBLEMS”, whic in turns out has been a golden find for the Wildcats. It turns out that for the second week in a row, senior quarterback Chad Prain was the Wildcats’ offensive leader. He has been playing other positions, but in a pinch called upon to take over as QB and is performing in an outstanding manner. It is a shame he was not the STARTING QB since the beinning of the season, otherwise the VAALDOSTA WILDCATS RECORD would possibly be 10-0. But Cats can live with Spilled Milk and mak of the rest of the Season with this fine unselfish young man. Just you all take note again: His name is “Chad Prain”. On sat. Nov. 7, 2009 Prain completed 9-of-13 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Not bad for his second outing asz a Quarter Back folks.

I think you might make those people mad at you in Atl if you go against your Lovett, however you have your opinions, if Chattooga wins i want a headline admitting you had no respect for us, but before you pass judgement you should see them play, we lost 27 to 12 to number 1 Calhoun…But if i am correct Lovett is another of the schools that can pick and chose their students so recruiting is involved. Senorise Perry is a former track state champion so come watch the 60 to 80 yard runs.

Benedawg: Once you see Lovett’s team, you will know they don’t “pick and chose their students” based on athlete ability. They haven’t had a player sign with a Div. I school in almost three years. They are just a well-coached, fundamentally sound group that doesn’t beat themselves with an abundance of mistakes. It seems you are the one passing a wrong judgement on a team that has played championship caliber football for a while. It will be fun to heard your excuses after a Lovett win: refs cheated, they recruit, and blah, blah and blah.

Newnan upset is a good possibility, but it will take Valdosta’s best to pull it off. That is the only upset special this week.
I just watched Lassiter game on GHSA. That offense is awesome. QB play is great. South Gwinnett is good but only because of offense. Defense makes a lot of mistakes. Everybody brings up Souths 2 TD’s being brought back against Grayson……so what. I would hope when an offensive lineman tackles a defensive lineman to save the sack it would be called. Those touchdowns would have never happened if it werent for those holds (tackles).

Todd, I’m getting a little sick and tired of reading your support of Lowndes week in and week out. At the same time, I believe you’ve indicated Grayson is overrated. We can’t wait to get them back in Grayson again, so we can shut up all the critics and put an end to this Lowndes worship. One advantage we’ll have when we meet next time, is that all the eyes in the nation will be on this match-up, watching for a repeat of the undisciplined display of unsportsmanlike thuggery which made them infamous last year. Lowndes will be forced to be on their best behavior, which takes them out of their game. One thing I’ve not been able to understand all year, is how this team can be so much better than the one last year? Most of their best players were all seniors who played both sides of the ball, apparently speaking to their depth. Where did all the new stud athletes come from? If they were there all along, how come they didn’t play last year? Could there be recruiting going on? Most of our star players were juniors last year, which further confuses me why you’d continue to pick Lowndes.

its evident you know nothing about lowndes, u always calling them thugs just because of one game. im pretty sure any onther team has disputes with another team every once and a while. and yeah lowndes is better this year because most of their players were juniors lastyear, but i garrentee you this everysince that loss to nswr you will see a faster, better, and more physical lowndes. They need to come up with a better way of setting the brackets. The top 3 teams in AAA are on the same side of the bracket. That makes absolutely no sense. But the Trojans should still roll to their 3rd title in 5 years!

“TO TODD/AJC: The fact that NGA has more AAAAA teams should have no bearing whatsoever on the rankings. It should not be based on quantity, but QUALITY. Please tell me you don’t do that???”
What South Georgia team should be ranked that isn’t in AAAAA? There is only one that isn’t ranked that deserves consideration, and that’s Colquitt County. I don’t have a problem with anyone ranking Colquitt (an 8-2 team), but it’s absurd to claim that bias is the reason that Colquitt is not ranked. There are lots of polls, and most don’t rank Colquitt. Why would I pick Lowndes to win the title if I had a bias toward North Georgia?
There are typically three reasons people give for a disagreement they have with our rankings — (A) I’m biased, (B) I’m an idiot, (C) We have an honest disagreement.
I’m guilty of B and C, but I’m accused of A far too much.
Gipp: I’ve never said Grayson was overrated.
Pops: I could always pick upsets for the fun of it, and I’m sure there will be some in AAAAA, but they will be true upsets – meaning nobody could’ve realistically seen them coming, except those that are near toss-ups, and those are few.
“todd needs a new crystal ball imy grandma can out pick him.”
I don’t doubt that. I’ve had a bad year predicting games. Can you email me Gradma’s picks?
“if Chattooga wins i want a headline admitting you had no respect for us”
There aren’t enough headlines to cover every game that I pick wrong. But I wouldn’t say that a No. 10 ranking = no respect. Lovett is ranked higher and predicted to win this game by probably 90 percent of people who are looking at this objectively. It ain’t just me.

I think Northside can take it all the way to the finals. I am concerned about the 2nd half defense, however. No way Warner Robins should have come back from 20-0 to win that game, same with Colquitt making it close towards the end. The offense is not helping the defense in the second half. I hope the coaches can get this team to play 4 quarters of football in the playoffs, where we know anything can happen. It does look like we will face North Gwinnett, unless Woodstock surprises them, which is very possible. Either way, I believe Northside wins. Beating Lowndes again would be really sweet, especially if it were for the state title. They have a tough bracket to get there, with Camden and Grayson in the way, both games on the road. Good luck 1-AAAAA.

George Gipp, all of the Lowndes players came up thru our middle school programs except one, and his mother is in the Air force. She was transferred here two years ago. You don’t know dip about Lowndes, its young men, or the coaches. As for that episode last year in Grayson, our head trainer and coaches talked to the referess five times about incidents like the one that occurred in the GA/FL game this year when the FL player tried to gouge out a Georgia running back’s eyes. Greg Reid could not see out of his left eye where they had repeatedly tried to gouge it in pile ups. The same thing happened to number four for us who was the only player ejected from the game. So talk about us if you want to but we have all those incidents on film. Camden was definetly not without some of the blame for that stuff that happened last year, to say the very least.
Our players are all fine, outstanding young men. My best advice to you is to MOVE ON, AND PUT LAST YEAR BEHIND YOU. THIS IS A NEW YEAR. Grayson should hope they don’t get to have a rematch with us.

NSWR will have trouble getting by N.Gwinnett and if they do I bet they will face colquitt again to get to the dome, it is gonna be tough, I guarantee everything gets doubly tough in the playoffs some average teams play over their heads sometimes, and good teams get rattled and falter. WE WILL SEE!

ATTENTION: Corrected Football Brackets
The GHSA football playoff bracket originally published in the Constitution
and on various web sites is incorrect. These are the corrected brackets.
First-round matchups are NOT changed. There is only a slight adjustment to
make sure that the Nos. 1 and 4 teams from the same region are in the same
half of the draw.

Tha AJC has Camden/Newton and Lowndes/East Coweta listed on the top right side of the bracket instead of TOP LEFT. Which is correct? The GHSA website shows them on the top left.
This is a huge change, and means Northside is on the same side with GRAYSON, McEachern, Newnan, and Peachtree Ridge.

Apalachee goes all the way it class of 2010 and we aren’t gonna settle for anything less than state champs for AAAA you watch JON LEE will run all over these defense out here and Jeff haney will stop any running back out there. Apalachee has many different choices they can do run or pass and not one can run stop the triple option.

Pops – clearly our bias would pick an upset: Etowah over South Gwinnett.
I don’t believe that it would be that far fetched though… not that you would expect a #2/#3 matchup to be lopsided. I think Etowah’s Defense is pretty stingy. Aside from the McEachern game, Etowah has done well. Not to take away anything from McEachern, but I think Etowah went in to that game overconfident and got smacked… albeit by a very good team.
South Gwinnett has not dominated any of their “good” competition (Brookwood, Parkview. Norcross). I hear that the Grayson game was closer than the final score, but it seems like all good teams played Grayson close until the end. Lack of home field advantage won’t help.
We shall see… I think R5 will make some noise this year. The potential McEachern-Lowndes matchup will be something to see… right behind a potential Woodstock-North Gwinnett matchup.

GHSA re-draws football brackets
The state playoffs just got harder for Buford and Sandy Creek. And perhaps easier for Hiram and Holy Innocents’.
The Georgia High School Football Association re-drew the football playoff bracket Monday morning after finding errors in the original. First- and second-round pairings remain the same, but potential quarterfinals have been altered significantly.
Here are some of the highlights:
No. 2 North Gwinnett (10-0), originally seeded to face No. 7 Northside of Warner Robins (9-1) in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals, is now in the same quarter with No. 4 Lowndes (9-1) and No. 8 Camden County (8-2). No. 6 McEachern (10-0) and 2008 runner-up Peachtree Ridge (8-2) are now grouped with Northside.
While that’s probably a fair trade, other classifications are seeing more jarring changes.
In AAAA, No. 4 Hiram (10-0) got good news because it is now seeded to face unranked Lakeside of Evans (9-1) rather than No. 5 Thomas County Central (9-1) in the quarters. No. 3 Sandy Creek (9-1) is quartered with Thomas Central (9-1).
In AAA, No. 1 Gainesville (10-0) is now seeded to play No. 5 Baldwin (8-2) instead of No. 3 Peach County (10-0). Peach moves into the quarter with No. 4 St. Pius (10-0).
The expected quarterfinal showdown between No. 1 Calhoun and No. 2 Fitzgerald has been erased. Now, Calhoun is more likely to meet No. 4 Jefferson County (10-0), while Fitzgerald is quartered with unranked Callaway (8-2). Defending champion Buford’s draw got tougher because now Fitzgerald is in Buford’s half.
In A, No. 2 Savannah Christian has been moved into the same quarter as No. 3 Lincoln County (9-1), while Holy Innocents’ (9-1) inherits Emanuel County Institute (9-1), a team that Savannah Christian has beaten 34-0.
The draws for basketball, baseball, soccer and tennis also must be corrected and will be addressed later, according to GHSA spokesperson Steve Figueroa.
“This resulted from moving just one region in a well-intentioned but misguided effort to prevent the same regions from being in the same half of the draw every year,” Figueroa said. “Didn’t work out the way we intended.”
