Note: The AJC’’s Michael Carvell will be blogging live from “Sims vs. Shaw” at Flowery Branch on Friday night. Please join us here on ajc.com
Two of the nation’s top high school quarterbacks will be on the same field in Georgia on Friday.
It’s Gainesville’s Blake Sims (committed to Alabama) vs. Flowery Branch’s Connor Shaw (South Carolina). Gainesville is ranked No. 1 in Class AAA, while Flowery Branch was last year’s state runner-up.
How rare is this QB showdown between Sims vs. Shaw? “I was talking to an old friend who used to recruit for Ohio State,” Gainesville coach Bruce Miller said. “He said he’d go through entire states without seeing a major-college quarterback … and to see two of them from the same county (Hall County) in the same game is something special.”
Here’s the tale of the tape between the QBs:
> Size: Sims had a growth spurt over the summer and stands at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, while Shaw has a nice frame at 6-2, 200. Both will have to add muscle before playing in the SEC. Advantage: None.
> Statistics: Sims has passed for 1,402 yards and rushed for 449 yards, while scoring 31 total TDs. Shaw has 2,016 yards passing and 584 yards rushing, along with 37 TDs. Advantage: None.

Will Nick Saban and Blake Sims (committed to Bama) still be buddies around national signing day? UGA is making a late charge, and I'm guessing Sims will sign with the Bulldogs
> Accuracy: Both have only three interceptions. Sims has completed 62-percent of his passes, while Shaw — clearly the biggest improvement of his game since last year — is at an astounding 73-percent. Advantage: Shaw.
> Speed: Sims can score from anywhere on the field with his legs, even returning a punt for TD. Sims averages 7.7 yards on QB keepers. Shaw has deceptive speed, and his “dual threat” athleticism is revered by Steve Spurrier. Advantage: Sims
> Style: Both play in spread offenses and can scramble, which causes major problems for defensive secondaries. When rolling out, Sims is often encouraged by his coach to run — if there’s space, while Shaw tends to wait a little longer for WRs to get open. Advantage: None.

South Carolina-bound Connor Shaw (left) has completed a whopping 73-percent of his passes in 2009 (AJC).
> Clutch: Sims hasn’t been tested yet, rarely playing after halftime, as Gainesville has won by an average of 42 points. Shaw threw the game-winning TD pass on the last play of the game vs. West Forsyth. Advantage: Shaw.
> Castmates: Sims has WR Tai-Ler Jones (Notre Dame), and if not the state’s best defense, then perhaps the No. 1 LB duo with A.J. Johnson (Tennessee) and Thomas Sprague. Shaw has sophomore RB Imani Cross (976 yards rushing). Advantage: Sims
Who is your pick for Georgia’s top QB? Gainesville’s Blake Sims? Flowery Branch’s Connor Shaw? Lassiter’s Hutson Mason? North Gwinnett’s C.J. Uzomah? Who else you would throw in there? Please make your choice below.

Sims will not play QB at UA, he will be move to WR or DB, they are have a better one on the team and are bringing in a higher rated. They do not run the spread. His speed is what they want. Ga does not produce many high rated QBs.

out of these two i would say Shaw. he is the real QB. Sims seems to be an atlete which works in high school but as he moves to college he will have to be able to throw. next year NG’s quarterback c.j. Uzomah will be recognized as the best

Hutson Mason — rush him and he will find the hot receiver. Drop 9 and he will use his legs and run for 10 yards.

The best quarteback on the” Georgia high school planet” is Connor Shaw ! “Rocket Arm” and “Tons of Talent.” We think that the University of South Carolina and Coach Spurrier are getting a future ALL SEC QUARTERBACK !! P.S.–MICHAEL, Brenda thinks you’re sooo cute !!

Between those 2 definitely Shaw.
In the state I gotta go with Hutson Mason at Lassiter. Passed for over 3,000 yards so far this year and is on pace to break the state record in a season in their 1st playoff game, has 36 TDs to 3 INTs and has a completion pergentage of 75% or so.

HUTSON MASON of LASSITER HIGH SCHOOL is the best QUARTERBACK in GEORGIA. This man is on course to break all of GEORGIA PASSING RECORD and you left him off because you like SIMS and SHAW. Both players are good quarterbacks , but HUTSON MASON is a excellent quarterback.

I’m a strong proponent for Lassiter QB Hutson Mason. Who knows? Not only could he end up being Georgia’s top QB (I’m going to wait until after the playoffs to think about that more), he also could be Georgia’s top overall player. Unfortunately for Hutson, ,at least up until now, many college scouts view him a “product of the system” with his coach’s offense, which is unfair but it is what it is. I think if Hutson performs very well vs. Roswell, and then has a couple of good showings in the state playoffs, then he will be difficult for the ACC/SEC schools to ignore. I really think are going to close fast and furious with Hutson and colleges over the next few months.

I agree Michael. I have seen him a few times in person at games the past couple eyars and he can make the throws, but is smart and in games takes what teams give him. If a deeper pass is open he takes it, but when that covered most of the time he is more than content to dump it off for a screen or something to keep the clock moving and chains moving.

Huston Mason has impressed me last few games with his arm strength. Throwing on the run. His accuracy is pinpoint. To watch him in the pocket and look over entire field, then make a decision is something few qb’s can do. This guy does not get rattled. Only thing that hurt Hutson was not playing sophmore year.

Hutson Mason is the best in the state period. When you throw for 545 yds in a single game which is more then some teams throw for in an entire season, you have to put him on the top of the list for GAHS QBs. He can make any throw and the questions about his arm strength are B.S. Sims will never play a down at Bama as a qb and Spurrier will transform Shaw into a int machine like his current qbs.

Who is YOUR pick for Georgia’s top QB?(High School).I like both,(Blake Sims, and Conner Shaw). Each one has proved he can play high school QB. Both look like he’s coachable. So for some people it comes from having coach them, played with them, seened them play, seened one play not the other,or for what reason YOU just do not like one. WHAT’S YOUR REASON? We all are blessed,so with that i wish both the best, and just keep your FAITH in GOD with him everything is possible.

I think you need stop and relize the facts here. Blake will never play qb at bama. If you look in his picture with Coach Saban he looks to be only about an inch taller than him, and i dont think Saban is any where close to 6ft. Connor Shaw mihgt have hte strongest arm in the state there is no doubt about that but when youre talking about the BEST I repeat BESt qb in the state. Is there really a question about this one? Its Hutson Mason. The kid has broke more records than any player in the state and usually when you brake records that means ur pretty good. He plays in 5A football the largest and hardest class in the state. Yet he is still putting up numbers like its a joke. 3086 yards 35 tds 3int at 73% completion rate and yet there is a question who is the best Qb in the state. The offers will come for Mr. Mason I gurantee that. I would hate to see the kid get cheated out of this one.

I hate that this team is in the smallish Single A but Wesleyan’s Connor Welton is something special to watch. He’s incredibly accurate with a strong arm and great legs as he continues to dominate in Single A running Wesleyan’s spread offense. As you may know, his father was a DB on the Georgia national championship many years ago. I would love to see them play against Buford and some of the other power house programs.

Haven’t seen Hutson Mason but I have seen Martay Mattox for Clake Central High School in Athens, GA. This kid is an impressive dual threat QB and is only a Jr. He accounted for 6 TD’s in his most recent game. And has accounted for 4 or 5 TD’s in several games this season. Roughly 23 Overall TD’s 12 passing 13 rushing w/ only 2 INT’s.

I have seen Sims, Shaw and Mason. Three different kinds of qb’s. If Spurrier has chosen Shaw, then I would guess he is probably the best of those three to transition to the SEC. Spurrier is pretty good at knowing who the best qb’s are. He picked Conner Shaw and I think that says a lot.

He is something to watch when he’s on and to think, he’s playing behind the smallest line in the State and still has delivered numbers. I’ve been to 3 games this year and everytime I’m impressed. I sure hope he gets a chance to play D1 somewhere next year. With the time a college coach can put in with him I’m sure he’s going to be better than he is now. Coach Sanks seems to have done a great job with his team this year. They are much better than they were last year. MUCH BETTER. My hat goes off to him.

News flash! Playing QB as a small guy is not advantageous, no matter what conference you play in! Bradford, who is a little thin, took a shot from a MWC player, came back only to take another big hit from a BIG XII player to end his season. This is college football. EVERYBODY HITS!! Looking to next year, Timmy Byerly at Chattahoochee definitely is on the radar. Just a Junior this year,in one of the toughest Regions, he rushed for 17 TDs and passed for 11 TDs. First Chattahoochee QB to ever rush AND pass for over 1,000 yards in the same season…and that was done through 9 games. With most of his solid O-Line returning next year, and a probable move to AAAA for Hooch, it could be a great story.

Mason is a system QB. Short passes and WR/RB screens every play will work for teams like Hawaii and Texas Tech but not at any SEC school. Why do you think no one has offered him? He’s not fast enough to play another position (like Sims) and he doesn’t have a strong enough arm to make throws at a BCS school. Stats don’t mean squat in high school… Mitch Mustain was a 5* QB a few years ago and put up insane stats in HS, and now he’s third string at USC and hasn’t had any playing time since his freshman year. His best chances are going to a school like Hawaii or Western Michigan where anyone can run the offense… there’s no way he sees the field if he goes to an SEC/ACC school.
What up?

Mason is not a system QB…he can make all the throws necessary to play at a big D1 conference. Just becasue they don’t bomb the ball down the field often has more to do with the fact the screen/shorter passes of 10 yds or so are almost always open. Why would you force a deep throw that could possibly be picked off when you can get 8 or 9 yds on a play and keep the clock and chains moving?

Shaw is the best QB in the state. Throws the best ball on the run I have seen high school or college. You can throw out the records, Shaw’s team is basically rebuilding on the O-line and defense with Cross and Drummond both at Tech now.
