For the AJC
Since the start of the 1995 season, the Brookwood-Parkview rivalry has been the best in metro Atlanta and one of the best in the state. In that time, the Gwinnett County schools have combined for 12 region championships, many of which came directly at the expense of the other. They have combined for five state championships, including the 2002 game in which Parkview beat Brookwood 28-7 in the final.
This year they add a new dimension to the rivalry. Brookwood and Parkview enter tonight’s game tied for fourth place in Region 8-AAAAA, trailing Grayson, South Gwinnett and Dacula, all of which have clinched playoff berths. So for the first time in the history of the series, the winner of the Brookwood-Parkview game will go to the playoffs while the other’s season comes to an end. Parkview hasn’t missed the playoffs since 1993. Brookwood has missed the postseason just once since 1995.
Which team will travel to McEachern for a first-round playoff game next week? It’s a tough call. Their records are similar (Brookwood is 4-5 overall, Parkview is 5-4, and both are 4-3 in the region). So are their results. Both teams lost to the region’s three playoff teams by 10 points or less, and both beat most of their other region opponents pretty handily. So, I’ll take the scientific approach. Brookwood has outscored its region opposition by 92 points; Parkview’s margin has been 90 points. Then let’s take Brookwood by two points at home tonight.
But that’s not the only big game in Class AAAAA tonight. Here’s a look around the rest of the state:
Region 6-AAAAA: Lassiter and Roswell, who play tonight for the region championship, can put up points. Lassiter averages 38 points per game and has scored at least 42 in six consecutive games. Roswell averages 36.3 this season and 40 in the past five games. But Lassiter has quarterback Hutson Mason, and I look for him to be the difference. It would be the first region championship in Lassiter’s history.
The AJC’s Michael Carvell asks: Who’s Georgia’s best QB?
Region 7-AAAAA: The North Gwinnett-Peachtree Ridge game will determine the region champion. Everything appears to be in Peachtree Ridge’s favor: The Lions are the defending region champions; North Gwinnett has been in this position three years in a row and failed each time; and North Gwinnett quarterback C.J. Uzomah is questionable. But I’m going with North Gwinnett to come through this time and join Lassiter in winning its first region title.
Region 1-AAAAA: Warner Robins’ upset of Northside-Warner Robins dropped the Eagles into a three-way tie for first place with Lowndes and Colquitt County. However, Northside will win the region championship by beating Colquitt County tonight. And Warner Robins will miss the playoffs after it loses to Lowndes and Valdosta beats Houston County on Saturday.
Elsewhere: In tonight’s other region championship games … Sandy Creek beats Banneker for back-to-back 5-AAAA titles. … Dalton beats Hiram in 7-AAAA. … St. Pius gets revenge for last year and beats Dunwoody for the 5-AAA crown. … Carrollton does likewise to Ridgeland in 6-AAA and avenges its 2008 loss. … Fitzgerald stops Thomasville to win 1-AA. … Calhoun beats Armuchee to win 7-AA (again). … Jefferson beats East Jackson to win the 8-AA title. … Miller County beats Clinch County to win 1-A.

31-0. That is funny. Hey BlackandGold24 let’s just let it play out on the field. I like your prediction. If we lose SO WHAT we weren’t supposed to make the playoffs this year. I think alot of people are underestimating our Packers. If we can play 4 FULL quarters NO ONE in this state can beat us. Let’s hope that happens tonight. Packers 31 Northside Eagles 0.

Every many on here is overstating the Colquit/Lowndes game just a little, to say the least. Are you trying to scare Northside? If they were going to be scared they would have been scared when Lowndes came to town, not because Colquit is coming to town.
Colquit is a much improved and dangerous team this year, but lets not over state the facts to try and prove a point.
31-6 with Colquit not scoring until the 4th quarter against Lowndes is pretty obvious to me. Was it a tough game for Lowndes? Yes
Is every one conveniently forgetting the Lowndes turnover on the first play of the game to set up Colquit? seems yes
Is every one forgetting the penalty that followed to set Colquit at the 7 yard line with a first and goal. yes
Is every one forgetting on the next 2 plays Colquit couldn’t move the ball and so on 3rd and 6 was forced to throw and Lowndes dropped people into coverage and came up with and interception? seems yes
See Moultrie Observer article for proof:
“The Packers kicked off and Vikings fumbled the ball away on their first snap, giving Colquitt a first down at the Lowndes 22.
A pass completion and a Lowndes penalty gave the Packers a first down at the Lowndes 8.
But on third down, the Vikings Geraldo Orta picked off a batted Brown pass in the end zone ran it back 63 yards before King took him down at the Packers 27.”
Does defense win championships…..AGAIN I SAY not offense? YES!
See Lowndes/Colquit and all of the interceptions FORCED BY LOWNDES as proof.
See Lowndes/Colquit and almost 400 yards of offense put up on Colquit in that game.
Colquit’s qback was 12/29 (not counting the ones he completed to Lowndes) and 130 yards passing, hardly a dominating performance.
Colquits running game consisted of 2 long runs by their running back and that is basically it, the second one in the 4th quarter when Lowndes was up 31-0 and thinking pass.
See Valdosta Daily Times as proof:
“King led the Packers with 14 carries for 159 yards and a touchdown. King had runs of 50 and 68 yards in the game.”
The 68 yarder was in the 4th quarter when the game was over.
Only because I don’t desire many long trips to Atlanta would I prefer to see Colquit win tonight. On the other hand I kind of would enjoy going to the house of all of these so called great teams and disproving a myth of Lowndes road woes and winning a State Championship the hard way.
Any way it will be a good game between Colquit/Northside tonight but don’t overstate how good Colquit is, because they ain’t THAT good.
I see Northside in another close one. If it were being played at Colquit I would take Colquit in a close one, because I believe the 2 teams overall are pretty equal.
Northside is a strongest on defense and ok on offense.
Colquit is strongest on offense and good on defense.

Cheating goes on everywhere, where have you been. Stone Mtn. played a kid that started the season at Lithonia. He ended up at their school because an assistant left Lithonia and went to Stone Mtn. and took him with him. The truth of the matters is it happens all the time but it’s a matter of being so stupid that you had to be caught in this situation.

so. apparently our region (5-AAAA) goes like this….. Sandy Creek and Banneker play 4 the region title.. ima pick Sandy Creek. so that takes care of the #1 and #2 spots.. Mays plays Northgate (y i dnt kno) and Starrs Mill plays Villa Rica (again idk y).. the winners take the #3 and #4 spots.. why doesnt the playoff system allow Mays and Starr’s Mill to play for #3 and #4? tht makes alot more sense

YO I agree with your assessment of the Colquitt Northside game. I see Northside winning by 10. Don’t get me wrong, I will pull for Colquitt all this ole country boy can pull for a team that is playing 125 miles from where I’ll be at, and that’s on the 50 yard line cheering for Lowndes to beat WR. I think Colquitt will win a game or two in the playoffs, but won’t go as far as Northside will. If tonight’s game was in Moultrie, Colquitt might win by 10, but it ain’t.
If Northside sit’s back too many people protecting against the pass, Colquitt’s very fast running back might get off some big runs. He impressed me. Wish we had him! Course Northside’s got a hoss too.
I just hope we take care of business ourselves, and do what we are supposed to do and that is to beat Warner Robins. By the way, I think our kids are looking forward to the trip to Camden in a couple of weeks, if it turns out that way. They certainly won’t be “afraid” of Camden.

BigDawg must have played on a team that we beat repeatedly… like Decatur, Grady or Southside. We had strict study requirements. Crim only had one ineligle player in its history and that was due to lack of communcation between the new AD and the new headcoach at the time. Know the facts and the records… dont let your ill will influence your comments.
