Georgia High School Football Daily Spotlight: Week Eleven’s 10 Best Matchups

Here are 10 games the GHSF Daily staff considers not-miss this weekend.

Banneker at Sandy Creek
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, The Battlefield, Tyrone
Records, rankings: Banneker is 7-2 overall, 5-1 in Region 5-AAAA Div. B and unranked; Sandy Creek is 8-1, 5-0 in 5-AAAA Div. A and No. 3.
Last meeting: This is the teams’ first meeting.
Three things to know:
1. Sandy Creek is in the 5-AAAA championship game for the second consecutive year. Last season, the Patriots beat Villa Rica 23-0 for the region title. Banneker has never won a region championship since starting the program in 1988.
2. Sandy Creek has the No. 2-ranked offense in Class AAAA, averaging 37.8 points per game. Rajion Neal, who has rushed for more than 1,100 yards, leads the way.
3. Banneker’s Kowalski Kitchens had receiving touchdowns of 50 and 70 yards in the Trojans’ 51-7 victory against Alexander last week.

Colquitt Co. at Northside (Warner Robins)
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, McConnell-Talbert Stadium, Warner Robins
Records, rankings: Colquitt County is 8-1 overall, 5-1 in Region 1-AAAAA and unranked; Northside is 8-1, 5-1 and No. 7.
Last meeting: Northside won 31-7 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. If Northside wins, Northside is the region’s No. 1 seed and Colquitt is the No. 3. If Colquitt wins, Colquitt would be No. 2 and Northside No. 3 if fourth-ranked Lowndes takes care of Warner Robins to clinch the No. 1 seed.
2. Northside led Warner Robins 20-0 in the fourth quarter last week but was beaten on a 47-yard, fourth-and-long pass in the final minutes.
3. Colquitt, running a no-huddle, spread offense under second-year coach Rush Propst, has won as many as eight games in a season for the first time since an 8-3 finish in 2001.

East Jackson at Jefferson
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Jefferson
Records, rankings: East Jackson is 9-0 overall, 8-0 in Region 8-AA and unranked; Jefferson is 9-0, 8-0 and No. 8.
Last meeting: Jefferson won 48-0 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. The winner will be the Region 8-AA champion, the loser the No. 2 seed for the state playoffs.
2. This is an unofficial championship of Jackson County. East Jackson is a 3-year-old county school, and Jefferson is a city school that started football in the 1940s.
3. Jefferson is coached by T. McFerrin, who has 310 career victories. He came out of retirement this season.

Gainesville at Flowery Branch
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Falcon Field, Suwanee
Records, rankings: Gainesville is 9-0 overall, 4-0 in Region 7-AAA Div. B and No. 1; Flowery Branch is 7-2, 4-0 and unranked.
Last meeting: Gainesville won 27-13 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. Gainesville will be the No. 1 seed in 7-AAA with a victory. Flowery Branch will be the No. 2 seed behind North Hall with a victory.
2. Gainesville’s Blake Sims (committed to Alabama) has thrown for 1,402 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 450 yards.
3. Flowery Branch’s Connor Shaw (committed to South Carolina) has thrown for 2,016 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 584 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Michael Carvell asks: Who’s Georgia’s best QB?

Hiram at Dalton
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Harmon Field at Bill Chappell Stadium, Dalton
Records, rankings: Hiram is 9-0 overall, 5-0 in Region 7-AAAA Div. B and No. 5; Dalton is 7-2, 5-1 in 7-AAAA Div. A and No. 10.
Last meeting: Dalton won 34-21 in 2007.
Three things to know:
1. This is the Region 7-AAAA championship game, with the winner claiming the No. 1 seed for the state playoffs and the loser taking the No. 2 spot. Hiram has never won a region title in the program’s 10-year history.
2. Hiram earned its spot in the championship game by rallying from a 21-7 halftime deficit to beat Sprayberry 28-27 last week. The Hornets blocked the potential game-tying extra point with less than four minutes to play.
3. Dalton controls the ball and the clock with its powerful running game, which is led by a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Shaquon Moore and Tre Beck.

Peachtree Ridge at North Gwinnett
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Tom Robinson Memorial Stadium, Suwanee
Records, rankings: Peachtree Ridge is 8-1 overall, 7-0 in Region 7-AAAAA and No. 8; North Gwinnett is 9-0, 7-0 and No. 2.
Last meeting: Peachtree Ridge won 19-7 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. The winner captures the region championship. Peachtree Ridge is the defending 7-AAAAA champion, while North Gwinnett is seeking the first region title in school history.
2. The availability of North Gwinnett quarterback C.J. Uzomah may not be known until game time. He missed last week’s game against Duluth with an undisclosed injury.
3. Peachtree Ridge’s Brad Roby is a threat to score from his receiver position, returning interceptions or returning kicks, and quarterback Nick Lombardo can do damage running or throwing.

Ridgeland at Carrollton
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Grisham Stadium, Carrollton
Records, rankings: Ridgeland is 8-1 overall, 5-0 in Region 6-AAA Div. A and unranked; Carrollton is 9-0, 4-0 in 6-AAA Div. B and No. 5.
Last meeting: Ridgeland won 28-13 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. This is the 6-AAA championship game and a rematch of last year’s region final, won by Ridgeland.
2. Both teams have an outstanding defense. Carrollton is No. 1 in Class AAA, allowing 5.6 points per game. Ridgeland is No. 3, allowing an average of 6.6 points with five shutouts.
3. Louis Hudson, Jared Cooley and Broderick Snoddy combined for 191 yards rushing and five touchdowns in the first half of Carrollton’s 56-12 victory against Cedartown last week.

Roswell at Lassiter
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Frank Fillman Stadium, Marietta
Records, rankings: Both teams are 9-0 overall, 8-0 in Region 6-AAAAA and unranked.
Last meeting: Lassiter won 21-7 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. The winner will be the region champion and the loser finishes in second place. It would be Roswell’s third region title this decade, but it would be Lassiter’s first in school history.
2. Expect a high-scoring game. Lassiter’s offense is tied for fourth in Class AAAAA, averaging 38 points per game. Roswell is sixth, averaging 36.3.
3. Lassiter QB Hutson Mason is having another big year. He broke the state’s single-game passing record with 545 yards against Milton three weeks ago.

Thomasville at Fitzgerald
When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jaycee Stadium, Fitzgerald
Records, rankings: Thomasville is 7-2 overall, 6-0 in Region 1-AA and No. 7; Fitzgerald is 9-0, 6-0 and No. 2.
Last meeting: Thomasville won 21-15 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. This game determines the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds from Region 1-AA.
2. Fitzgerald’s Trenton Pruitt, son of coach Robby Pruitt, has more than 1,000 all-purpose yards, including 474 rushing with 11 touchdowns and 399 receiving with three touchdowns. But Nic Williams is the team’s leading rusher with 850 yards despite missing last week’s game with a minor injury.
3. Thomasville quarterback Charles Hayes will get his first start since an Oct. 16 leg injury. Backup Quintez Spear, a sophomore, has rushed for more than 150 yards the past two weeks in Hayes’ place.

Warner Robins at Lowndes
When, where: 8 p.m. Friday, Martin Stadium, Valdosta
Records, rankings: Warner Robins is 6-3 overall, 4-2 in Region 1-AAAAA and unranked; Lowndes is 8-1, 5-1 and No. 4.
Last meeting: Lowndes won 35-14 in 2008.
Three things to know:
1. Despite its 6-3 record and upset of previously unbeaten Northside last week, Warner Robins must win to make the state playoffs.
2. Lowndes is assured of the playoffs but must win and have Northside lose to Colquitt County to be seeded No. 1.
3. Lowndes scored on all six of its possessions last week in a 63-7 victory over Coffee and leads AAAAA in scoring average at 45.3 per game. Warner Robins allows 8.4 per game, tied for sixth-best in AAAAA.

I LIKE THE KID FROM LASSITER. EVRYONE HAS HEARD OF SIMMS AND SHAW, BUT WITHOUT THAT KID, LASSITER PROBABLY WOULDN’T BE IN THE POSITION THEY’RE IN. ANOTHER SUBJECT I WOULD LIKE TO BRING UP IS THE BEST ATHLETE IN THE STATE!! I BELIEVE THAT TRES HOUSTON FROM BANNEKER HIGH SCHOOL IS THE BEST ATHLETE IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA, HANDS DOWN!!!! HE HAS PUT THAT BANNEKER TEAM ON HIS BACK AND THEY HAVE A CHANCE OF BEATING A PRETTY GOOD SANDY CREEK TEAM ON FRIDAY. TRES HAS SCORED RUN, RECEIVING, PASSING, INTERCEPTION, AND FUMBLE RETURNS THIS SEASON. LET ME KNOW WHO YOU GUYS THINK IS THE BEST??

SportsFan31313: For Lowndes to win the region, Colquitt has to beat Northside.
Thomasville over Fitzgerald-Hmmm. Expect to hear from cane fan.
You didn’t pick Brookwood-Parkview! Don’t forget about BROOKWOOD MOM.
Could the rationale of picking P’Tree Ridge & Roswell, even though they are the road teams, be because Lassiter & North Gwinnett have never won a region title?

SPORTSFAN31311,what rock have you been under??? fitz shalacked coffee during the preseason 35-0 we avg what 6 points a game, the only way thomasville beat brooks is that brooks had 5 count them 5 turnovers, thomasville will be out played out coached, out passed out rushed, and as i have stated earlier special teams will play a big role, good luck to all the other teams

SPORTSFAN31311…I agree with all of your picks except ROSWELL over LASSITER. Their defense gave up a half-a-million yards in passing alone to WALTON. What do you think this quarterback from LASSITER is going to do?
FITZGERALD (VS) THOMASVILLE—could go either way Im sort of leaning towards Fitz playing at home…but TVILLE is a great pick…they are solid and proven as well. I,ll take TVILLE also in the upset special.

SouthGaRules,

I know that. But it is a tough one to call. Northside is very good at home even though I new that Warner Robins would pull off the upset this year. I’m going back and forth with this matchup. I am hoping for Colquitt County to win because I would like to see Lowndes County as the Region Champs and the number one seed. But I don’t know. Can you call it?

Thomasville will win over Fitzgerald. I don’t care what Cane fan has to say. Thomasville has dominated Fitzgerald over the years and this year will be no different.

I picked The Ridge, and Roswell because of their team, and their history.

SportsFan31313: I am thinking that Northside got its wake up call last week losing to the Demons.
However, they were coming off a lackluster win against Tift. Of course, as ENR loves to remind us, NSWR does not lose at the MAC to non-Houston County teams in the regular season. Colquitt is a step up in competition for the Eagles & for that reason, the Packers get the job done tomorrow night.
I sure hope you are right about the Ridge. If they win & Collins Hill won the coin flip today, then North would be the #3 seed playing at Lassiter or Roswell. For purely selfish reasons, I would like Colquitt & Warner Robins to win Friday night. That would put Warner Robins playing Newnan in the first round & leave me with a dilemma. My nephew plays for Newnan & my wife is a WRHS grad, so who to pull for? Maybe Lowndes wins & I don’t have to worry about it. If that happens, then I will get to see the last game of Rick Tomberlin’s career at Valdosta.

Black&Gold,

That may be true that I have not been to Fitzgerald’s games, but I do read about Fitzgerald’s team. However; I have been to see Thomasville and Central Thomasville. They both have solid programs and those players are usually “Big”. Thomasville have dominated Fitz over the years, and this year will be no different. I will give you credit, and say that Fitz has an awesome year thus far. In addition, you all will do very well in the post season. But I don’t believe that you all will beat Thomasville.

GGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOO PACKERS. SUEY PIG! CALLING ALL HAWGS! (How do you call hogs?) WHATEVER IT TAKES! Beat those Eagles!

For you North Georgia bloggers, “Packers” is Colquitt County’s nickname. They got it because for decades there was a big pork slaughtering and packing facility in Moultrie. (One of the largest employers in town.) Moultrie High School became Colquitt County High School, but it kept the nickname. They have played football since the early 1900’s and are really good this year. Their only loss was to Lowndes in Moultrie 31-6. They beat Warner Robins in Moultrie 2 weeks ago 17-0.

Northside should have lost to Valdosta and to Lowndes. They trailed Tifton 14-0 at halftime. And Northside of course lost last week to Warner Robins. Northside is a very, very good football team, but they CAN be beat, and Colquitt might just be the team to do it and break thie so-called win streak. I say so-called because they have actally lost games at what they call the MAC, but for their own press purposes they don’t count’em because the losses were to their rival Warner Robins. To me a loss is a loss is a loss. Whatever, Colquitt might just officially end it tonight anyway. Either way, Northside will do very well in the playoffs, and likely could win the title in what might be their last year in AAAAA. This Lowndes fan has been practice calling hogs all week.

gooo packers. Break the “win streak” that’s not really a winning streak. I say not really because Northside has been defeated during the regular season several times during the so-called win streak, but they don’t count’em because the losses “were to rival Warner Robins”. What difference does it make who beats you. A loss is a loss is a loss. But Whatever, Colquitt might just put an end to the thing anyway, tonight. Northside sahould have lost to Valdosta and Lownsdes, and trsailed Tifton 14-0 at half time, and of copurse lost AT THE MAC last week.

Whatever the out come at the MAC tonight, Northside will do well in the playoffs and could win the state title in what most likely will be their last year in AAAAA. Colquitt should also do well in the playoffs. Both are very good teams.

AVikingFan —

This “streak” you speak of, is a streak. The losses to Warner Robins were at the MAC, but Northside WAS the visiting team. Both Warner Robins and Northside share the stadium, so Northside CAN’T be home team every year and the streak is Northside wins at “HOME”. So, it has nothing to do with “their own press purposes” and more to do with consecutive wins AT HOME. Please, do a little research before posting, the win streak is a win streak. You say Northside should of lost to Valdosta and Lowndes, why is that, is it because they scored more points than both those teams? Say what you want about missed field goals, but there were some on Northsides side as well and it’s all part of the game. If your better than the other team, you wouldn’t need to depend on field goals…our kicker hits em beyond 45 yards. Shoulda, coulda, woulda….DIDN’T! Colquit got smoked by Lowndes. 2 More things, Northside hasn’t played Tifton, they played Tift Co., and hard to trail 14-0 at the half when we only gave up 13 to Tift Co. the whole game. Our 21 point 3rd quater quickly erased that deficit.

One more thing, that win streak you try to discredit…it’s still a win streak! 20-17 Northside wins! Nice try, Colquit made it interesting as Northisde took their foot off the pedal in the second half, Northside Region Champs….again!!! The Streak continues!!!!

42 Straight wins at home. Last loss, 10-22-2004 to Warner Robins 10-3. 86-4 at home since 1998, 2 of those losses were in the playoffs, 1 coming in the Championship game to a Parkview team that had Jeff Francouer on it, the other 2 regular season losses were to Warner Robins. The last regular season home loss Northside has suffered that wasn’t to their biggest rival from the same city, you have to go all the way back to 9-20-1996, a 9 point loss to R.E. Lee (Alabama) and they’re not even from the same state. Peach Co. beat Northside the week before, 21-0. Northside is on a very impressive run right now, 142-15 since 1998. Worst year in that run, 10-3 in 2002 in which they lost in the 3rd round of the playoffs to I believe eventual state champs Parkview 21-19. They’ve played in 4 title games, winning 2 during this time. 3 straight trips to the title game, ‘05-’07. 35 straight wins in that time, and a 44-1 run in those 3 years.

And, of that 142-15 record since ‘98, 113-6 in the regular season and 29-9 in the playoffs, again, 2 of those losses were in the title game. We’ve had more losses in the playoffs over the last 12 season than we’ve had in the regular season in that time. Domination!
