Amazing, K-MAN wants to compare a 40+ year or program to a ten year old program. How did y'all do in your first ten years? Grayson has come a long way in those ten years. It is tough starting a program from scratch. That is want I find amazing about several of the Gwinnett teams - Grayson, PRidge, etc - that they are young programs and are having a lot of success!

Lowdes09 - Do you have any idea how a statement like "We all know Grayson can’t win without cheating so I don’t understand why they are nationally ranked at all" makes you look? Talk about sour grapes! Quit living in the past (with woefully inaccurate memories no less) and join today! Sheesh! You lost. Get over it. It is not the end of world. I have heard from too many other Lowndes posters to believe that is a common belief. They have moved on to this year to Lowndes' accomplishments, why don't you?

Oh come on people. Camden wouldn't have been champs if Grayson hadn't cheated against Lowndes last season. Lowndes is king and NSWR is right up there with them. We all know Grayson can't win without cheating so I don't understand why they are nationally ranked at all. Region 1-AAAAA is where REAL football is at and always will be. Atlanta area teams just need to step aside.

i guess you guys are right, since lowndes has won multiple titles in the past, we should just crown them the best team in georgia. regardless of their record THIS YEAR. rankings aren't based on history moron. who even cares about national rankings? its not like we'll be going to the rose bowl or something. everyone out here knows that were not #2 in the nation, we'd get slaughtered by st. thomas aquinas. quit making grayson out to be some overrated cinderella team, we're the best team in georgia right now, but not the nation.

It was the (Semi Finals) South Georgia Championship game in which they lost to Warner Robins, who went on to win the State.

SouthGaRules,

Yes,

John Stewart was Class AAAA Back of the year, and he went to Auburn. Bradwell Institute lost to Warner Robins in the 2nd round or just before the South Georgia Championship game. Something like that. Correct me if I am wrong.

I CANT BELIEVE IT,..Dont tell me to stop talking about the past! I know its (2009)...but COMMON SENSE should tell you that " if it were not for the past ...there would be no present"! Now back to what I was saying...LOWDNES deserves their ranking, they are ALWAYS in the running each and every year. GRAYSON is the one who hasnt done anything yet....but get all of the glory. WIN -A- CHAMPIONSHIP first,...then again and again...then maybe you can be in the same conversation as LOWDNES...this year and so on! DO SOMETHING FIRST...and EARN your ranking!
Stop being jealous and give LOWDNES their credit do!

SportsFan31313: You are correct. I know Bradwell scheduled HoCo as well as 2 AAAA teams, so I'm not really sure what they can do except maybe schedule Metro Atlanta schools, but I know there is a cost factor to consider. I do know this: The reason Grayson scheduled Warner Robins was to get the team used to traveling come playoff time. I would dare say that is the same reason Peachtree Ridge traveled to Lowndes 2 years in a row. BTW: Wasn't there a RB from Bradwell that went to a D-1 school about 20 years ago? I want to say his name was John Stewart but I'm not sure.

SouthGaRules,

Now that makes a lot of sense. I can agree with you on that. However; I will say to get to play against a tougher team may require for your team to travel over a hundred miles. I think that is part of the reason why GHSA align Regions like the way they do. Example, The longest travel that Bradwell Institute have on their schedule is Camden County. They (Camden County) is near the Florida Border approximately less than 5 miles away. To strengthen the schedule for Bradwell Institute, they would have teams far away that are in their Classification. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Fred- Sorry but December is wishful thinking.Grayson will not make it past round 3 against Newnan. They will stop the run and are way better
than South Gwinnett who you guys had trouble with this year.

I know teams can't do anything about their region schedule, but I applaud teams that schedule tougher out of region teams. I know now that Grayson's win over Warner Robins looks better considering what the Demons did last Friday night. I know there are regions that do not play any out of region games (8-AAAA among others), so they have to play what they are dealt.

Yo,

I still think that just looking at scores and schedule doesn't paint a true picture. If you go deeper and look at yardage, long plays, time of possesion, etc., you certainly can get close but in my opinion, watching a team for multiple games during the season says so much more. I am in awe of some of the posters and their knowledge and understanding of the game (you are one of them!) and their ability to look at a game as it is/was and mostly put aside extreme boosterism to provide a critical analysis of what is going on.

For me, I have enjoyed high school football the past two years like I never have before. Enjoy the remaining games and I'll see you in the Dome in December! wink, wink! :)

Thank goodness we have a playoff system to determine the true champions ... unlike one particular college athletic activity which continues to live in the Dark Ages with its head stuck in the ground like an ostrich (did I spell that right?).

Just pretend for a moment that instead of Phillie and NY having a best-of-seven playoff series, a group of "Voters" decided who would be baseball's world champions?!

The quality of prep football in GA is as good as ever this year, and any number of teams can win titles. Thanks to all the athletes and coaches who work so hard to entertain us. An appeal to all posters: Please, please, NEVER put down any of these people. Without their work, you wouldn't have such a great sport to enjoy, or this column in which to express your opinion.

Fred your statement "I can no more know how strong Lowndes, Camden Co, or Warner Robbins is based on the one time I have seen them than I can fly to the moon." is not exactly true.

If you had showed up to watch Northside or Lowndes in the game that they lost would you know more or less about them.

Trust me your opinion based on that one game for each of these teams would have been wrong. Especially for Lowndes if you were to go back and then look at the other 8 games, who they played, and the scores.

The fact is you can tell a lot about teams by looking at scores and the teams that they play with out ever seeing those teams play even once.

Brookwood Mom, do you have problems with the length or the content? Sorry about the length, I just had a lot to say that time. If it is content and my remarks using Brookwood as an example, show me where I am wrong. Brookwood has a great history and tradition but is going through a relatively down time. While I don't particularly care for the way Coach Crews runs his team based on the couple of games I have seen and others I have read about, that is just my opinion and of course your is rightfully different. I used Broowood as an example only because I prefer to talk about the games I have attended or watched on TV/Internet. The Brookwood/Grayson score was 22-12 and everyone thought that was close. Based on the momentum of game at the time, Grayson was driving and had the ball on the Brookwood 10 with 30-40 seconds to play and took a knee instead of a sure field goal and probable touchdown. Would everyone have thought Grayson was better if we had won 25-12 or 29-12? Probably. Would the number of W/L changed, no.

My point about region weakness is true for several regions including 1, 7 and 8 and probably others (talkin AAAAA now). There are several strong teams in the region that play each other. Someone has to loose. When you then look at W/L in region, all of the good teams can't be 10-0. The losses to each other by quality teams makes the numbers look like the region is weak. Through in out of region games and strength of schedule, while interesting, shouldn't be as strong of a ranking factor. Yes, you have to take into account the programs that are flat struggling but I think you can do that without placing too much emphasis.

I find it interesting that the people doing the rankings are doing so based on scores and abreaviated reporting. There is no way they can see all of the games. I think unless you see the games and follow the teams closely over the entire season, you can't really get a true picture of the team. I can no more know how strong Lowndes, Camden Co, or Warner Robbins is based on the one time I have seen them than I can fly to the moon.

Dadgum it! I got long winded again! Sorry. :)

Fellas, Camden is the Champ until they are knocked off. Deal with it. I know they stand a great chance with a HUGE lack of QB production. But all remains to be seen...ya gotta BEAT the champ when it counts to BE the champ. I respect all the teams at the top, but my home..Camden..is STILL the champs. Quit knocking them. Makes you look like crybabies. Now, let's pull for one of our teams to get way up there in the nationals.

I agree that polls are an inconsistant way of rankings teams...but they're what we all go by...polls are calculated in the preseason and they change every week until the last game of the season...when a team is sittin at #1...does that mean that they are the best team of that week until the next poll comes out...or are the voters presuming that that team is better overall than every other team...and when a team wins or loses and moves up or down...does that mean that the polls were wrong the week before...for instance if Colquitt beat Northside friday...what does that say about the polls that came out Monday morning....in my opinion rivals, espn, usatoday, ajc, and all the other polls are no different than yours and my personal opinionated polls...theirs are just more publicized. To the person whos preseason polls match those of the postseason...good job...you know your stuff.

Shout out to Fred...I like your post...you should post more often

Can't have it both ways ladies and gentlemen. Either Grayson's lack of a title in their short history keeps them from ranking high OR their 9-0 record of this year ranks them over the teams that have been good in the past but whose records this year include a loss. It doesn't work for Lowndes, NSWR, Camdem, etc. as examples only (all *great* teams and I am not trying to take *anything* away from them!) that have losses this year to say they are better this year because of their past and then in the same breath beat up on Grayson because of their past. Grayson has steadily progressed over the past several years and can make a strong of a claim as anyone.

It is interesting that strength of schedule is so important and everyone acts as though the schedule is something that is set by the head coach the week before. My understanding (which could be wrong) is that schedules are to some degree both set by GHSA with their region assignments and in region play requirements AND set several years in advance. A team can go up and down a lot in just a couple of years. Look at Brookwood and Parkview as an example. I am not trying to diss them in any way but they are not the same teams they were just a couple of years ago. And does anyone else see the problem with determining strength of region play? There are some exceptions from some perennially weak football teams but with all of the in region play, there are going to be teams that lose several games. Then, because they have lost several games, they are declared weak. Seems like a Catch-22 to me (and yes, I realize I just dated myself! :) )

One last point, unless you watch Grayson play over the course of the season, it is easy to get a wrong impression of their games. The Grayson "way" is to control the ball on offense and give no ground on defense. This leads to lower scoring games. If you look at them for the one game you play against them, it is easy to say they missed opportunities and did not play strong when their way is to do enough to win the game using the entire 48 minutes. It is so obvious when the blowout score against Meadowcreek even when they were doing everything they could not to run up the score except leave the field has such a disportionate affect on ratings. I know in several games including Brookwood the score could have been higher but Grayson chose to either just let the clock run or in Brookwood's case, take a knee at the Brookwood ten yard line with 30-40 seconds left on the clock.

Now did I like Grayson being rated #2, you bet ya! Do I think they are any better or worse than they were the week before or the week after the high rankings, not a chance! Do I enjoy all of the discussion these rankings generate, heck yea! I stand in awe of the depth on knowledge some of you have and the dedication to the sport. I really enjoy all of the reparte' between everyone discussing their team. At least, that is until it turns personal about either coaches, players or other commentors.

Sorry for the long post. I get carried away sometimes.

It doesn’t work for Lowndes, NSWR, Camdem, etc. as examples only (all *great* teams and I am not trying to take *anything* away from them!) that have losses this year to say they are better this year because of their past and then in the same breath beat up on Grayson because of their past.

Seems like a Catch-22 to me (and yes, I realize I just dated myself! )

One last point, unless you watch Grayson play over the course of the season, it is easy to get a wrong impression of their games. The Grayson “way” is to control the ball on offense and give no ground on defense. I know in several games including Brookwood the score could have been higher but Grayson chose to either just let the clock run or in Brookwood’s case, take a knee at the Brookwood ten yard line with 30-40 seconds left on the clock.

I really enjoy all of the reparte’ between everyone discussing their team. At least, that is until it turns personal about either coaches, players or other commentors.

Sorry for the long post. I get carried away sometimes.

GHSclassof2012, that is really interesting you bring that up. PRHS also wanted to play Byrnes but Harrison wouldn't let us out of our contract. Too many of these contracts! I would've rather played Byrnes than Romping on Harrison to be honest.

K-MAN quit talking about the past this is 2009 not 2007 and BULLDAWGBITE win your region 1st before you do any talking. Teams from ALABAMA couldn't play in GEORGIA HIGHEST CLASSIFICATION and be NATIONALLY RANK. Some of ya'll need to start watching the game of the week on ESPNU and you will see that GEORGIA plays the best HIGH SCHOOL BALL. Now getting back to what I said early If GRAYSON shouldn't be rank nationally hell NG, COLQUITT COUNTY AND LOWNDES COUNTY shouldn,t be either.

Worst case 3rd seed for NG would spell Trouble for Grayson. If North looses to Peachtree Ridge and looses the coin toss to Collins Hill that would send a 9-1 team to Grayson in the 2nd round.I think North Gwinnett will take out #1 Grayson and is not a good option for them.
Grayson really needs to pull for North against Peachtree Ridge and hope some else plays them.

I Cant Believe it... how can you say NG shouldnt be ranked that high. last year we lost to a very good newnan team on their home field in the qtrs. this year we beat the #5 team in the nation. and yes vigor won state in alabama last year.. IN 5AAAAA. Prattville had won 3 state titles in a row in 6AAAAAA. and just because your team wins a scrimmage doesnt mean crap. it means nothing on how your team will do in a season

I CANT BELEIVE IT...How can you say LOWNDES doesnt deserve to be ranked very high in the polls? If you go to the schools glass case...you will find a whole lot of hardware inside of it How many championships have they won....5 or 6? I know at least 3 in the last 6 years! Plus they are in the running again this year...make that year after year! Not to mention ...the region they play in is like the (SEC) of high school football! NORTHSIDE deserves the very same credit! Maybe the other schools you mentioned shouldnt be.....but these two are no strangers to high rankings!

Just checked Rivals and actually Northside is still in the top 100. The Eagles went from 16 to 69. Just wondering something here... If polls don't mean anything, why is everyone still posting on this blog? The AJC writes their opinion, or poll, and then we all agree or disagree. It is correct that no one or no computer can predict the outcome of the games, but past statistics can show us probable outcomes. The rest is just smack talk, which makes it so worthwhile. By the way, Rivals says that anyone that loses a game in Georgia will fall like Humpty Dumpty.

Grayson dropping a little means nothing , it's all computer ranking bs because of the Rams playing weaker teams the last few weeks . Northside dropped in the national rankings in 2007 for the same reason.

K-MAN,GRAYSON isn't the only school shouldn't be rank that high. I could name a few starting with LOWNDES COUNTY, COLQUITT COUNTY, NORTH GWINNETTI, AND ETC. What top team in GEORGIA has Colquitt County played and besides Prattville who has NG played thats rank in GEORGIA. Hell VIGOR won STATE in ALABAMA last year and UNION GROVE shut them out in a scrimmage this year. So how did they get to be rank so HIGH.

#1 GRAYSON shouldnt have been ranked that high in the first place! They got an advancement in pay before they actually did the work.
# 2 Its a good thing they didnt play BYRNES ,because afterwards, they wouldnt have been ranked very high in the regular AJC-poll....just ask CENTRAL GWINNETT!

Rivals figured out they jumped the gun by putting Grayson that high once they saw Graysons remaining schedule and who Meadowcreek really was. But in reality Grayson has shot to go all the way, it all depends on matchups.

A little birdie told me that South Cobb is dropping down from AAAAA to AAAA region 5 next year. I know alot of players on the team and they have alot of talent with sketchy coaching but next year they will have a team full of seniors with an easier schedule so I wouldn't be suprised to see them in the playoffs next year

please stop giving rivals press, it means NOTHING last week after beating the worst team in the state (meadowcreek) we jumped 4 spots and they said our stock was rising. after a bye are stock is fallin because of a week schedule haha what a joke of a poll. theres no question we have a weak schedule but why jump us up in the first place

They had to move them back so that when Grayson loses...the team who beat them will not be at the top. Grayson should've scheduled some teams worth playing...no offense to Camden...but they didn't even show up.
