Not running up the score, it was 29-22. Have you seen any of these teams play this year. Dunwoody is not that strong as years past and St. Pius imposes their will on everyone they play. I saw Dunwoody play twice last season and saw them once this year, they won't beat St. Pius.
As far as our playoff shot, tell me something I don't know. Once again that's not a surprise, it's actually not a surprise to me that YALL are going either considering that region YALL play in.

Greetings Black Angel,

To answer your question, I'm retired, that is the good thing about being able to get on the blog. Next I do have another job but you're the boss you don't have to worry about things like that. I am not a Sports writer for the AJC by no means. They are a whole lot better than I am in sports writing. But I love Sports, and I love Georgia Football. Prep, College, Professional, you name it.

I agree with you Black Angel about the zoning and the splitting of good athletic talent that will spread around to different schools in the area. I also agree with you that there are some good / great schools up there in the Atlanta Metro area. Let me name some: Class A Wesleyan, Holy Innocents: Class AA Jefferson, East Jackson, Lovette,Buford , Westmisister: Class AAA Gainesville, Flowery Branch, North Hall, Creekview, St Pius X Grady, Dunwoody, Towers,: Class AAAA Sparyberry, Hiram, Sandy Creek, Stars Mill: Class AAAAA Peachtree Ridge, Grayson, North Gwinette, South Gwinette, Collins Hill, Roswell, McEachern, Woodstock, Etowah, East Paulding Stephenson, ML King, Union Grove:
There are more, but I just wanted to mention them as an example. So you see Black Angel, I am a South Georgia Football Fan, and I am originally from South Georgia, but I do recognize great teams.

LOL I see SportFans31313 is always bloging about something.. Do you like work? Or just sit at the computer all day debating region football teams with everyone onhere? Are you a sports writer for the AJC? Although I see you have knowledge and mentioned several key points about weak regions and strong regions, is it safe to when you speak of Camden, Lowdnes, Valdosta, and other South Georgia Teams for a long time there were no other high schools around in the areas, so those teams had a mountain of athletes at those schools. When schools began to open up in other areas where talent was and schools were re-zoned then some of the athletes were re-zoned to other schools. So now you don't have the domiance of one school like you had with a Camden, Lowdnes or Valdosta anymore. Agree or Disagree...?
Now for alot of you South Georgia Homers who think football is only played in the South... Newsflash there is some really good football being played up North. I am really awaiting to see how the first round of the playoffs go from region with wins/loses. Let's see what region will represent..
Lastly, you Gwinnett People.. you all kill me holding eight. Let me say this again EIGHT Playoff Spots automatically in the playoff. Your County WILL NOT ALLOW NO DEKALB COUNTY TEAMENTER INTO YOUR REGIONFOR THE SIMPLE FACT YOU ALL WILL LOOSE MONEY, GAMES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SEVERAL PLAYOFF SPOTS. Prime example is when Stephenson Jaguars beat up on the mighty parkview Panthers a few years ago. I am letting you know right know that 3 teams are dropping out of region2 5-A. Now what you think is going to happen? That means three Dekalb County teams will either move into your region or Three Gwinnett County teams will move into Dekalb regions. Either way it go, I am glad this will give Gwinnett County something else to cry about now. Is any other counties experiencing this?

Decatur 4 Life,

As Far as your previous statement, I will just agree to disagree with you because its not going any where. One thing I do know that we can agree on is that win or lose, Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute is in the Post Season again, and Columbia of Decatur is not (Again)....... :-)

Decatur 4 Life,

Dunwoody will win, and just because Dunwoody, save your team the embarrassment of not running the scores up on Columbia, does not mean that they wont beat St Pius X.

As someone who's moved from A to 5A - there is a giant difference between small town Friday night passion for football and the big schools. These 5A games are more about how much money parents have to fork out to a booster club rather than a community supporting a team. In the S. GA small towns, the away games can be heard on the radio. In N. Ga, there aren't enough radio stations to cover the teams. I just wish my school would do what the others in our county have done.

Lowndes fans, stop the lovefest for Colquitt. They need Lowndes to lose to WR. If that happens and Colquitt wins, Colquitt is the #1 seed in our region.

K-man and Sportsfan,

Get real. In AAA, it goes 7-3-2-1-6-5-4-8. K-man you say that 3AAA has had 3 teams ranked in the top ten at one time or another during the season, well if that is part of your basis, then 7AAA has had 4 teams ranked in the top 10 this season, and there are two teams sitting at home in 7AAA that would be in the playoffs in most other regions. West Forsyth and White Co. could beat most 2 seeds in other regions, and all 3 and 4 seeds. Flowery Branch was unbeaten in region play going into last weeks' game against West Forsyth, and had to win against either WF or Gainesville just to get into the playoffs. Name another #4 seed that poses as big of a threat in upsetting the # 1 seed from 6AAA? Because if FB loses to Gainesville tomorrow, then that is what they will be - a #4 seed.

And to answer your question before I forget, no Dunwoody won't win our region this year. It will be St. Pius, Dunwoody traditionally has a good team but this year they aren't that strong. Heck they baerly beat our two win Columbia team 29-22 this season.

"But don’t say things like we pay for our championships because I know in Dekalb County that’s not true."

What are talking about? That's been my argument about 3AAAAA. Do I really have to ride someone else comments about your region being poo cheese, of course not. I really was commenting to someone's statement about region 3AAAAA beating region 2 and 4 head to head. Once again I can comment on what I want, sounding childish or not. Are you sore of the fact that Bradwell Institute might as well be in Florida or S. Carolina because nobody in Georgia ever heard of it. I told you long ago that Columbia is known for baketball, why do you keep bringing up what we do in football. They're horrible now, but when I attended Columbia they never finished less than 7-3. They also were in the playoffs every year led by Coach Ron Sebree who is now head of Dekalb County Athletics. You go check your records on that. I also found something rather interesting on Georgia High School Football Daily yesterday, Bradwell had the easiest AAAAA schedule in the state this year. Wow, and you're still a third or fourth seed in that region. YALL pretty horrible too. Yes, I said YALL. It's called slang. What truth are you referring to that's supposed to be hurting me? I never said Columbia was going to beat some folks this year, they're doing exactly what I thought they would. What about Bradwell, when did your hopes come crashing down. Was it that loss to Houston County or was it the region loss you had. Regardless nobody cares about YALL, you're just one of the teams a part of that garbage region that Camden runs. To answer your question I do pull for our region and just not them but the county as a whole. I grew up and played in Dekalb County so that's a no brainer, of course I pull for them. Pulling for them and jumping on
a bandwagon is two different things. So like I said before go ahead and put on your Camden Wildcats t-shirt and jump on like you always do. Good luck but the wagon might not see Atlanta this year

They’re horrible now, but when I attended Columbia they never finished less than 7-3. They also were in the playoffs every year led by Coach Ron Sebree who is now head of Dekalb County Athletics. You go check your records on that. I also found something rather interesting on Georgia High School Football Daily yesterday, Bradwell had the easiest AAAAA schedule in the state this year. Wow, and you’re still a third or fourth seed in that region. YALL pretty horrible too. Yes, I said YALL. It’s called slang. What truth are you referring to that’s supposed to be hurting me? I never said Columbia was going to beat some folks this year, they’re doing exactly what I thought they would. What about Bradwell, when did your hopes come crashing down. Was it that loss to Houston County or was it the region loss you had. Regardless nobody cares about YALL, you’re just one of the teams a part of that garbage region that Camden runs. To answer your question I do pull for our region and just not them but the county as a whole. I grew up and played in Dekalb County so that’s a no brainer, of course I pull for them. Pulling for them and jumping on
a bandwagon is two different things. So like I said before go ahead and put on your Camden Wildcats t-shirt and jump on like you always do. Good luck but the wagon might not see Atlanta this year

I feel ya but it goes both ways, we could say the same thing about coming down there to play. I went to college with a guy that played at Northside Warner Robins in the mid to early 90's. He told me that they couldn't even get a fair game against Valdosta in Valdosta. I've always respected the programs in south Georgia, heck I grew watching high school football so it's no way I can deny where the deep tradition is. But don't say things like we pay for our championships because I know in Dekalb County that's true. The couple that we do have were from great teams that beat other great teams all over the state.

region 6AAAA by far toughest region............... SOuthwest dekalb best team in georgia with ken malcolme and t.j strippling and the rest of there d-1 team has size speed and a winning attitude. Marist most fundamental team in ga, o- line blocks perfect quarterback makes perfect reads and defense is good. Tucker defending champs is the hardest working team in ga, they have no size and not as much speed as they usally do but yet they r 7-2 with there 2 losses comin to southwest and marist( the 2 best teams in 4AAAA.

68 viking, i see your point and i think that has a LOT to do with it. i mean look at this blog. its an atlanta news paper and yall from south ga are on it just as much as everyone from atlanta. Hornet dave, if the teams were divided randomly they would all have pretty good talent. once you have talent it would take good coaching and feeder programs. South GA. has that everywhere. only the consistant teams in north ga have that. ptree ridge. grayson. newnan. NG. its not that berkmar or meadowcreek doesnt have athletes they just arent trained correctly for football.

Decatur 4 Life:

I aint hatin on ATL...actually i appreciate the fact that it's only a 3 hour drive from Valdosta. I have no problem with ATL...but sometimes i feel as though the ATL folk hate on South GA because of our football success...we respect the ATL competition...especially when it's a fair clean game and those ATL refs are crucial...whether its football or basketball.

The problem with the Gwinnett super-region is that Gwinnett County schools are districted in an unbalanced manner. For every Grayson there is a Duluth. Even within cities the unbalance is huge: Lilburn has Parkview but also Berkmar, Norcross has Meadowcreek. All of the talent goes into half of the districts. Outside of maybe Houston County, the SW Georgia region doesn't do that; Colquitt County takes the whole county, good or bad.
If Gwinnett was randomly divided into 15 or so teams, the teams would be more like the Gwinnett median, maybe Dacula or Norcross at best.

1AAAAA has been the most competive, for many reasons. The first of which it is the main religion down in so ga. HS football has always been supported by the comminity at large, win or loose we support our kids, just look at the following at away games, Many times so ga teams will out number the host . If one pays attion from schools more than 50 miles away will see very few fans following case in point when we played Grayson last yr the home folks could not believe that we would bring three thousand to the game. They just couldent understand why we would go to all that trouble, It appeard to me they felt like it was just a football game, When PTR came to play 2 years in a row thair fan base was limited to imidiate family members and some student body members, same with NORTH GWINETTE, BROOKWOOD , now do you get pictaure, I dont think the north thinks it all that important.

Decatur 4 Life,

I see the truth hurts. It is you and ONLY you with the constant repeat of what someone else says when it comes to Region 3-AAAAA.. It is you and only you that have nothing original to say about Region 3-AAAAA or any other Region for the most part. Again, before you go on your
hiatus of nothingness comments, Please check your Schools Record. I posted them for you to read.

I know the status of Region 3-AAAAA, and I also know about Bradwell Institute. I graduated from there. You asked why would I compare your School? Well it's because your constant running off at the mouth about Region 3-AAAAA along with Bradwell Institute. You go on to mention that your School (Columbia) had not been in that Highest Region for a long time. Well I hate to break it to you, but when your School (Columbia) were in the "Highest Region" Columbia still was a Bottom Rung Team. And again, your stats speaks for itself.

Now "Once Again" you're getting upset stating that you could blog about any team you want to. ( Sounds a little childish LOL) Well Decatur 4 Life, we all on this blog know that. My position is and still remain that you find something original to comment about instead of grabbing another original blogger's shirt tail, repeating what that blogger had to say instead of getting your own facts. That is the difference between a leader and a follower.

As far as myself (But you said "Yall" is that a word?) riding Camden County's bandwagon, I don't have to. Number 1, I am a Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute fan first, and then I am a region 3-AAAAA Fan second. Camden County is in Region 3-AAAAA and might I add, Bradwell Institute and Camden County have Championship Titles hanging on the wall or sitting in the Trophy case. So Decatur 4 Life, you need to know that win lose or draw, I will pull for the teams in Region 3-AAAAA.

Not one time have you pulled for any School in your Region. Why don't you pull for St Pius X, Grady, Dunwoody, or Towers? You are here commenting on everyone else's Region but your very own. Let me help you out here. I believe Dunwoody will beat St Pius X, and will be the Regions Champions for 5-AAA.

In conclusion, I will tell you again. before you comment and ridicule Region 3-AAAAA please look at your Columbia Eagles first.

Our region is far from overrated. Its like WOW Marist and the White Buffalo go all the way and loose to Legendary Conrad Nix in 2006. Tucker gets them in the dome and drop the game in 2007. Tucker wins in 2008 and SWD is whats hot in 2009. Our Region goes up there with 1AAAAA.

To curios Dekalb: Stone Mtn and Lithonia HS had to forfeit games base on ineligible players so that change the complexion of the playoffs,so the winner of Chamblee/Miller Grove gets in. Officials reviewed the books of all members of region 6AAAA to check into this matter today.

goober
grayram … Lowndes is 9-2 vs. your proposed super-gwinnett region since 2004, including three state titles

Thats impressive Goober, but against Grayson they are 0-1 with a temper tantrum on the side.

Ok Trojan Man, put down the koolaid and take two steps back from the edge. Lassitter is no doubt a very good offense. I am told that thier defense is not very good. Roswell did not play well on offense against walton and the field was in terrible condition; but they prevailed after spotting walton 14 points on 2 defensive breakdowns. In my view, lasitter has 8 weeks of game tape and I suspect that Roswell will have a defensive scheme to try to confuse the kid. The key to the game will be can roswell run its ball-control offense and hit thier play-maker wr #80; thereby limiting the number of possessions for the lassitter offense. I look for a high scoring game, but for the roswell defense to make enough plays to win the game. Roswell does have issues at starting qb that may hurt them on friday or in the playoffs; the backup is clearly more athletic and can make all the throws when need be. Should be a great game; its a shame that a 1 loss team after this game will be a #2 seed. Good luck on friday Trojan Man......(no not reallly).

Why would I compare my school? We haven't been in the highest classification in a long time. What difference does it make, what does that have to do with that cream puff region you're a part of? I don't have to piggy back off anything, you like to bring up Columbia. Once again since this is the second time we're going through this, I can blog about any team I want to because I'm a high school football fan. With that being said region 3AAAAA is soft as a snickers bar, bottom line. You talk about me piggy backing but yall ride the Camden bandwagon beause they run your region. If Bradwell was truly successful like you say then somebody outside of Hinesville or Fort Stewart would know of you. And you brag about AAAAA football, do yall even play? Second in that region is nothing to me and injuries are part of the game. Sounds like an excuse to me, you can actually go ahead and pull out your Camden County t-shirt and jump on the bandwagon like you do every year.

Now the truth comes to light, you don't like our teams because you think we have already enough of everything. Is it our fault everyone and their mother moved to Atlanta, is our fault we have a few professional sports teams to watch? Nobody pays high school football referees, what are you smoking? We could say the same thing about going to play in South Georgia, instead of playing just against the 11 players on the field you have to beat the referees also.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to 2 dekalb county teams having to forfeit games due to some ineligible players? That would definitely change the outlook of the playoffs.

A little birdie told me that South Cobb is dropping down from AAAAA to AAAA region 5 next year. I know alot of players on the team and they have alot of talent with sketchy coaching but next year they will have a team full of seniors with an easier schedule so I wouldn't be suprised to see them in the playoffs next year

Mike

What planet are you from? We had championships in metro atl even before they went from 4 classifications to 5. We don't have to pay anybody for anything, its sounds to me you're a little sore about the GHSA going to
five classifications instead of four. It seems to me that the decision should help you guys that couldn't cut it in the largest class, maybe yall will have better luck down a class. Lets get this straight, you might have more tradition but take away Valdosta and Camden's many championships and south Georgia doesn't have too much of anything to talk about. A few here and there just the metro schools. So don't tell me about the domination in the playoffs when only a couple of teams account for the titles. Region 1AAAAA is the toughest in the state hands down but dont count on a "gimme" win when you come up this way.
You'll be disappointed

If it wasn't for a muffed punt return by Walton in the last minutes of the 4th qt, Roswell doesn't win. But the kid muffed it, so I guess we'll never know. The Roswell D will its heads spinning trying contain the Trojan attack. As I'm sure the Roswell coaching staff's heads are spinning trying to think up a game plan to trying slow down this mighty offense.45-31 Trojans Win.

NHS Eagle Fan,

Okay I am with you and I agree 100% with you. To answer your question, I will have to "NONE"... The program is terrible there. It's like watching Recreation Football with the support they get. However; they do dominate in Basketball. But for the record, this is football season. So again, the answer is none of the Schools you listed. The reason I defend so much is because Bradwell Institute is very close to Savannah. About 30 minutes away.

MLK Lions Fan,

I'm not hateful. I respect ML King. No doubt about it. Look, ML Kin have dominated Union Grove in the past few years as well. Oh, and let me clue you in on a little secret. ML King have beaten Bradwell Institute once in the playoffs too. So, I'm not hating ML King. However; I have the gut feeling that ML King will be beaten by Union Grove this year. This only determines your seeding in the post season of the playoffs. Right now, you all are the #2 seed. if you lose this weekend to Union Grove, you will drop to the #3 seed. Then instead of Hosting the first of the playoffs, if you get upset by Union Grove, you will travel down to Savannah Georgia to play against Region 3-AAAAA Windsor Forest. If you win, you will Host the first Round of the playoffs, and guess who you will play against? Yes, Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute. Region 2-AAAAA #1, #2, #3, seeds are very good this year. No doubt about it. Heck, I don't want Bradwell Institute to face you all up there. I would have felt a lot better had Bradwell Institute been the #2 seed and Host the 1st Round at home.

Decatur 4 Life,

In addition, No School in your Region will beat Bradwell Institute. Your Columbia High Football could are not even good enough to fill our water cooler. If you all were to put your Varsity against our JV Our JV will be hammering you all 21 -0 by halftime......

Lets face it Decatur 4 Life, I don't think you really know what you are talking about. You read everyone else comments on this blog and piggy back off theirs. I agree that Region 3-AAAAA is a weak Region but do you know how many Region Titles Bradwell Institute have? Do you how many playoff appearances Bradwell Institute have? Do you know how many QUALITY TEAMS Bradwell Institute have beaten outside their Region into the playoffs? Why don't don't you go look that up, and find something original to speak about instead of repeating what others have to say.

Since you want to talk about weak, lets talk about your Columbia High Football Record.

Lets see, In your School History, you have 0 State Titles, 0 North Georgia Championship (Conferences) Appearances or Titles, you have only two Region Titles in 1970 and 1981.
Your overall record is 208-240-06 at average of 0.465. Your home record record is 39-42-1 Your Road record is 44-44. Do I need to say more?

Why don't you compare your Columbia High Stats against Bradwell Institute and see what you come up with. How many playoff appearances have Columbia been to in the last 10 years? 15 years? 20 years? as to compared to Bradwell Institute? How many quality Teams have Columbia High Beaten since the School existed as compared to Bradwell Institute?

So Decatur 4 Life, before you start running off with your mouth about Bradwell Institute , please check out your Columbia High School. In addition, please, please, and please, read my comments as to what I have already mention about Region 3-AAAAA and how far they will go this year before you grab someone else's shirt tail, and running with it and begin to speak nonsense about Region 3-AAAAA. Have a good day.

Decatur 4 Life,

In addition, No School in your Region will beat Bradwell Institute. Your Columbia High Football could are not even good enough to fill our water cooler. If you all were to put your Varsity against our JV Our JV will be hammering you all 21 -0 by halftime……

Lets face it Decatur 4 Life, I don’t think you really know what you are talking about. Why don’t don’t you go look that up, and find something original to speak about instead of repeating what others have to say.

big j,

Friday night showed some signs of hope for continuing in the playoffs for Union Grove. Akins had that touchdown. I was there, next to the play, and didn't see him out. However, what happened happened and we still won. #14 scrambled most of the game because the pocket collapsed in too much for his comfort zone. We need to stop calling the same plays. Running TJ Moon up the middle can only do so much after doing it three or four plays in a row. On a side note, our special teams looks the best it has all year, especially those two punts that were muffed by Newton. We do need to work on containing the returns, though.

All in all, I am looking forward to this Saturday's game, and think we have a legitimate shot to contend, if certain things are done.

We don't want to hear you justify anything about that region. Take Camden out and there goes all your state and region titles, so it doesn't matter how many titles a region has when one teams accounts for all of them. Bottom line that region stinks

"For the people knocking region 3 AAAAA, I bet as a region they could beat regions 2 and 4 in a roundrobin playoff. Especially this year."

Man please, there's nobody in that region but Camden. The Savannah schools don't play football they're more known for basketball. That region would get creamed night in night out if they match up with any other region in AAAAA. Half of them I've never even heard of.

Hey EagleNationRising your quote We do not lose to “dancing band” type programs. If the band is dancing and the teenage girls are dress like strippers, Northside is going to win. End of story. What's this got to do with football? What girls dress like strippers? You must be thinking about the club you frequent every night.

Population size doesnt make a difference.

There is truth to that statement, but then again how do you explain that since the inception of class 5A there has not been one state champion with a school population of less than 2400....in 5A?

Let me clarify, all state champs in 5A football have been from schools
of 2400 or bigger since its inception.

Well, WHEN he got the ball he was a factor. We didn't give it to him 2nd half, go figure. I think Stephenson has a chance to go pretty far this year. Now that our game is past we will be rooting for our region.

Trojan Man
How can you say Roswell should have lost to Walton? If it weren't for 2 defensive back breakdowns, Waltom would have been held to 7 points. Roswell dominated the second half. There is no doubt that Lassiter has a great passing game, but they still haven't faced a team with a strong of a running game, over 2200 yards rushing, and a defense that is ALWAYS coming at you for 4 quarters like the Hornets. It will be a great game!

There is definitely a BIG difference in the band world once you get north of WR! I honestly to do not know what the parents are thinking with some of the things those children are allowed to wear and bare!!!

Anybody notice where all the Number One Regions are? Their all in South Georgia where high school football is still king and played before full stadiums and has widespread community support. Ah, to return to those days of yesteryear when, on Friday Night, everyone went to the local High School Football Games. Congratulations, South Georgia......you still embrace the old values.

Roswellfan,
As Jon Madden would say "The team that scores the most points usually wins". Who cares about "ball control offense" when you can score on 3 or 4 plays drives at will. Yeah Lassiter has given up some point but when they need to, like in the games against Cennential and Walton (which Roswell should have lost), the Lassiter D makes the plays.

Michael 19 - Yes, about what I thought looking at their season. Good evaluation. Thanks.
Etowah will have to control the line of scrimmage on offense, which they are capable of doing with their senior laden O-Line. They should be able to control clock and score on extended drives if they don't have stupid penalties, like delay of game. It can be frustrating to watch at times, but when they are on they can be very physical and hard to stop. Running for somewhere around 400 yards last week against North Cobb, and dominating Clock. 34-14 final
Defensively those big receiver type's for South along with the running qb is scary. Overall we tend to play tough D , but are occassionaly vulnerable to the big play.
Special teams have improved on the return side, but our coverage units may have cost us the Woodstock game. That part of our game is worrysome.
Pleaaasse don't ask me about clock management.
I will make my prediction next week. We have a tune up with a desparate Harrisson this weekend.

Nice try Goober. When roswell lost that game last year 31-20 it was obviously a down year with several D1 kids graduating and now playing college and also a new head coach who got the job on short notice. Roswell went 5-5 last year and it clearly was a down year. Coach Leo Barker emphasizes physical defense and a solid running game; even though he has an SEC bound wide receiver to catch play-action passes. The bottom line is that Roswell (and Lassitter for that matter) have beat everyone in front of them this year. 9-0 is solid no matter what region you play in because at the high school level, you never know how teenagers are going to perform on any given friday night. For coaches to be able to get thier kids motivated and executing to run the table to 9-0 is really good. I agree that Lassitter will score alot of points; but defense still wins championships and this friday Roswell has the better defense and ball control offennse. In 2 weeks we will really start to answer the questions on which region is strongest this year. First & ten hornets!!!!

POPS. im a brookwood fan what i can tell you is that South Gwinnett runs a spread offence they can pass and run so u have to be able to do both, Their QB Kent Rollins is a D1 prospect he is like the Colt McCoy of High School football, he can run 90 yards for a TD which he has done, They have 4 elite recievers led by Vanderbilt Commit Jonothan Kroause, also the 6ft 8 beast Chad Ross, there back field is rb's Aaron Wimberly and Travon Walker both rushing very well with 100 yard games, defence is soild getting better every game, the way to beat them is by the clock keep the ball, and dont make it a back and forward scoring game they never lose

Univ. of Central DeKalb: I have been to that stadium. I honestly expect Northside to play at home throughout the playoffs. Of course, a team is only guaranteed home games through the first two rounds of the playoffs. After that point, it is a coin toss. However, playing at Halford Stadium will not create any sleepless nights in Warner Robins.

I have said this on the board many times. We do not lose to "dancing band" type programs. If the band is dancing and the teenage girls are dress like strippers, Northside is going to win. End of story.

Newton County,

Wow that was a low blow.. Of course no one knew were going to lose to alexander. I have no explanation for that nor will i make excuses for it. It was just a game we lost. But think reallistically. I already know Mays isnt going too far into the playoffs. Ima die hard fan and all but im not dumb. What has Newton done other than barely LOSE to Stephenson AND MLK AND Union Grove AND Alcovy. Nobody that you have beaten has more than 3 wins other than Eastside. Bottom line is if you cant beat those teams then your not going to beat Camden...well that's if you get past luella..

Population size doesnt make a difference. The schools are placed into Divisions based on sizes of schools, which means all the schools in AAAAA have approx. the same number of students, and therefore the same chances at having quality athletes.

I think its safe to say that the top Gwinnett teams and top South Georgia teams are good, equivalent matches for each other, and the tradition of excellence is what attracts families to bring their kids to these schools, so that they can be seen and have a better chance to play at the next level.

If one region was so dominating, playoffs would be pointless and a bore. Its great that there are so many strong teams from different areas this season. The playoffs are going to be exciting, especially because very few teams are going in as "underdogs." I think this is one of the first times that the playoffs will truly show who is the best of the best.

Yo: thats very good. You are right of course, before anyone was here it Was nothing. You are right on top of things!

SouthGARules : Norcross is having a bad season but several of the teams you mentioned would consistantly beat most region 3 teams.
1AAAAA has strong teams at the top in Lowndes, Colquitt, and Northside.
the rest Warner Robins, Valdosta, Cofee, Tift, Houston are no better than most region 7 or 8 teams.
Meadowcreek and Berkmar are another story. They should be allowed to play down a couple of levels.

Three teams from this region are ranked in the Rivals 100 in the nation.
Lowndes, Colquitt and Northside Warner Robins. Can you argue with that?
The best football in the state and nation is played in region 1AAAAA.

Sportsfan...I'm well aware of all of the Savannah schools, and when I say "Savannah schools", I mean just that. I'm not referring to any other teams in their region. So, now that we settled what constitutes a "Savannah school", please tell me which of them could possibly win a playoff game? Beach, Groves, Windsor Forest, Jenkins, Johnson, or Savannah? Put all of those teams together and they couldn't beat a decent playoff team. Throw in Benedictine if you want. High School football in Savannah now is crap, except for a couple of private schools.

grayram: The population of those 5 counties (Houston, Lowndes, Tift, Coffee & Colquitt) is maybe 350,000. Gwinnett alone has over 800,000 people. You make up the "super region" by cherry picking the teams. Granted, those 7 would be close to Region1, but the 8 you fail to mention: Norcross, Duluth, Dacula, Shiloh, Central Gwinnett, Meadowcreek, Mill Creek & Berkmar would be weaker than Region 3. The only decent team is Dacula & they are no Camden County. The problem with Gwinnett is they make up 2 regions. (I know that currently Forsyth & Fulton schools make up part of Region 7, but when Mountain View, Archer & Lanier (which will open in 2010) get up to AAAAA, Regions 7 & 8 will be Gwinnett North & South. Besides, this will be a moot point next year when WR, NSWR & HoCo go to AAAA with the opening of Veterans High in 2010.

HotInHere the present season Lowndes is 1-0 over super county Gwinnett.
Did you conveniently forget? And for Lowndes that total will be improved before year end assuming the Super county keeps showing up.
You can put that in a healthy bank if you can find one.

Actually GH22 we do know. How good were you years ago before you suddenly got this population influx. Before that no one had heard of Buford, Parkview, Brookwood, Grayson, Peachtree Ridge, etc.

Your population is why you are what you are. Without it you were nothing.

Georgia: High standards in "Little SEC"

By Jim Halley, USA TODAY
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Rush Propst's trophies take up considerable space in his office at Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.), but they don't carry much weight in his new region.
Propst, known for winning five state titles at Hoover, Ala., and for his appearances on MTV's high school football reality show, "Two-a-Days," had Moultrie excited when the Colquitt Packers won their first three games this season, but those were all out of region. Since his region schedule began, the Packers are 1-5.

Georgia's 5A-1, nicknamed "the little SEC," may be the toughest football league in the USA.

The farmlands that surround the high schools on the I-75 corridor from Warner Robins to Valdosta grow abundant crops of cotton, soybeans and peanuts, thanks to two growing seasons. That same weather is conducive to year-round football training. The region's football-crazy towns support their teams financially and with attendance numbers that rival Division I-A colleges. While Propst has won his share of state titles, he's just another successful coach in this region.

"You're not going into a region where they don't know how to play football," Propst says. "We have a lot of catching up to do. The thing that makes this region is the athleticism, the speed, everybody here plays good defense, except for us, right now. It's a region of great passion where football may be the most important thing, period."

Former Valdosta coach Wright Bazemore put the region on the map. The school had won two state titles before he became head coach, but he turned it into a power. He won his first state title in 1947 and over the next 27 seasons, won 13 more. Even after he stepped down in 1971, just as integration hit Valdosta, the school managed to keep winning. Though it has been 10 years since the Wildcats won a state title, they have 26, more than any other team in the state.

"Coach Bazemore was so gifted," said current Valdosta coach Rick Tomberlin. "He really was probably a genius. He set the bar real high. ... Other towns, other communities wanted to do things like Valdosta has done. They wanted to have good coaching, they wanted to have a good weight room, the best equipment, they wanted to have the best stadium, they wanted to have the best locker room. They wanted to have a lot of kids out. I can remember early in my career watching them run 100 kids out and I was, 'Wow, look at that.' Now, everyone has seen the value of having large numbers."

When it comes to football, nothing in 5A-1 is done on a small scale. Crowds of 10,000 or more are common. Many of the coaches in the region are paid around $90,000 a year and have plenty of help. Lowndes has the largest coaching staff with 15 but even the smallest, Valdosta, carries 10.

The torch from Valdosta was passed to rival Lowndes (Valdosta) in 1980, when the Vikings won their first of four state titles. The Lowndes Vikings, one of two teams, along with Northside (Warner Robins) from 5A-1 in the USA TODAY Super 25 high school football rankings this season, have won three of the past four 5A state titles.

But what has really made 5A-1 so difficult is all of its teams now contend for state titles. In the past 25 years, every team currently in 5A-1 has won at least one state title, except for Coffee County (Douglas) and Houston County (Warner Robins). The region has four coaches: Propst, Tomberlin, Lowndes' Randy McPherson, and Northside Warner Robins' Conrad Nix, who have won multiple state titles. Warner Robins' Bryan Way won a state title in 2004 and was an assistant on Warner Robins' 1988 title team.

"The success that Valdosta has had with 24 state titles and six national titles and being the winningest team in the country has a residual effect on the success of other programs," Propst said. "It's like driving into a neighborhood and everybody else's lawn looks pretty good. Pretty soon yours will look pretty good too. Valdosta has done a lot of winning and everyone around them says, 'Hey, we can do the same thing.' "

Big J, Everyone in the stands knows that #5 should be at QB. You can hear our fans WHEN #5 gets under center. The excitement level explodes. I am afraid that we won't realize our full potential this year because of this. I wished that one of the UG coaches would come on the blog and give us their rationale why they run #14 over #5. I will say that #14 has improved. Big J if you look at my earlier posts in the season you will see that I have been telling everyone about #20 and he is only a sophomore. To answer your question Big J, we still were not at our best. It was clear that our talent level is a tad bit higher than Newton. What I saw from Newton is that their players thought they were going to come out and intimidate our players…didn’t happen. After a few personal fouls their Coach got on them hard.

Goober, if you subtract losses to Roswell and add Lassiter's win total, Roswell's opponents easily have a winning record. I think the point HornetFan is trying to make is that we didn't schedule Woodland-Stockbridge.

HornetFan: We play 'em at home for three reasons: (1) Like any other team, we win more at home than on the road. Example: 31-20 vs. Roswell in 2007 playoffs. (2) We make money, even by paying visiting teams, because we put 10,000-12,000 fans at every home game. (3) Our thugs play better at home than your visiting thugs.

Oh, and one more thing. Lowndes' "weak" opponents this year are 56-34, or 62%. Lowndes has played one of the toughest schedule in the state according to Maxwell. Roswell's opponents this year are 39-51, or 43%. Case closed, your Honor.

Region 6 is the third best region in AAAAA and has no top ten teams - that, my Gwinnett friends, is balance. Watch out for Pope or Centennial in Round 1.
