Region 1-AAAAA has re-emerged as the No. 1 region after a year in which that claim was called into dispute. Warner Robins or Valdosta figures to be the best team in the state that does not make the state playoffs.
Here’s the GHSF Daily’s ranking of the best regions in the state by classification. We used the Maxwell Ratings as a guide. It’s based 50 percent on region depth and 50 percent on the top four teams.
The teams we list aren’t necessarily our projections of the seedings for those regions.

Goober, if you subtract losses to Roswell and add Lassiter’s win total, Roswell’s opponents easily have a winning record. I think the point HornetFan is trying to make is that we didn’t schedule Woodland-Stockbridge.

Big J, Everyone in the stands knows that #5 should be at QB. You can hear our fans WHEN #5 gets under center. The excitement level explodes. I am afraid that we won’t realize our full potential this year because of this. I wished that one of the UG coaches would come on the blog and give us their rationale why they run #14 over #5. I will say that #14 has improved. Big J if you look at my earlier posts in the season you will see that I have been telling everyone about #20 and he is only a sophomore. To answer your question Big J, we still were not at our best. It was clear that our talent level is a tad bit higher than Newton. What I saw from Newton is that their players thought they were going to come out and intimidate our players…didn’t happen. After a few personal fouls their Coach got on them hard.

Georgia: High standards in “Little SEC”
By Jim Halley, USA TODAY
MOULTRIE, Ga. — Rush Propst’s trophies take up considerable space in his office at Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.), but they don’t carry much weight in his new region.
Propst, known for winning five state titles at Hoover, Ala., and for his appearances on MTV’s high school football reality show, “Two-a-Days,” had Moultrie excited when the Colquitt Packers won their first three games this season, but those were all out of region. Since his region schedule began, the Packers are 1-5.
Georgia’s 5A-1, nicknamed “the little SEC,” may be the toughest football league in the USA.
The farmlands that surround the high schools on the I-75 corridor from Warner Robins to Valdosta grow abundant crops of cotton, soybeans and peanuts, thanks to two growing seasons. That same weather is conducive to year-round football training. The region’s football-crazy towns support their teams financially and with attendance numbers that rival Division I-A colleges. While Propst has won his share of state titles, he’s just another successful coach in this region.
“You’re not going into a region where they don’t know how to play football,” Propst says. “We have a lot of catching up to do. The thing that makes this region is the athleticism, the speed, everybody here plays good defense, except for us, right now. It’s a region of great passion where football may be the most important thing, period.”
Former Valdosta coach Wright Bazemore put the region on the map. The school had won two state titles before he became head coach, but he turned it into a power. He won his first state title in 1947 and over the next 27 seasons, won 13 more. Even after he stepped down in 1971, just as integration hit Valdosta, the school managed to keep winning. Though it has been 10 years since the Wildcats won a state title, they have 26, more than any other team in the state.
“Coach Bazemore was so gifted,” said current Valdosta coach Rick Tomberlin. “He really was probably a genius. He set the bar real high. … Other towns, other communities wanted to do things like Valdosta has done. They wanted to have good coaching, they wanted to have a good weight room, the best equipment, they wanted to have the best stadium, they wanted to have the best locker room. They wanted to have a lot of kids out. I can remember early in my career watching them run 100 kids out and I was, ‘Wow, look at that.’ Now, everyone has seen the value of having large numbers.”
When it comes to football, nothing in 5A-1 is done on a small scale. Crowds of 10,000 or more are common. Many of the coaches in the region are paid around $90,000 a year and have plenty of help. Lowndes has the largest coaching staff with 15 but even the smallest, Valdosta, carries 10.
The torch from Valdosta was passed to rival Lowndes (Valdosta) in 1980, when the Vikings won their first of four state titles. The Lowndes Vikings, one of two teams, along with Northside (Warner Robins) from 5A-1 in the USA TODAY Super 25 high school football rankings this season, have won three of the past four 5A state titles.
But what has really made 5A-1 so difficult is all of its teams now contend for state titles. In the past 25 years, every team currently in 5A-1 has won at least one state title, except for Coffee County (Douglas) and Houston County (Warner Robins). The region has four coaches: Propst, Tomberlin, Lowndes’ Randy McPherson, and Northside Warner Robins’ Conrad Nix, who have won multiple state titles. Warner Robins’ Bryan Way won a state title in 2004 and was an assistant on Warner Robins’ 1988 title team.
“The success that Valdosta has had with 24 state titles and six national titles and being the winningest team in the country has a residual effect on the success of other programs,” Propst said. “It’s like driving into a neighborhood and everybody else’s lawn looks pretty good. Pretty soon yours will look pretty good too. Valdosta has done a lot of winning and everyone around them says, ‘Hey, we can do the same thing.’ “

grayram: The population of those 5 counties (Houston, Lowndes, Tift, Coffee & Colquitt) is maybe 350,000. Gwinnett alone has over 800,000 people. You make up the “super region” by cherry picking the teams. Granted, those 7 would be close to Region1, but the 8 you fail to mention: Norcross, Duluth, Dacula, Shiloh, Central Gwinnett, Meadowcreek, Mill Creek & Berkmar would be weaker than Region 3. The only decent team is Dacula & they are no Camden County. The problem with Gwinnett is they make up 2 regions. (I know that currently Forsyth & Fulton schools make up part of Region 7, but when Mountain View, Archer & Lanier (which will open in 2010) get up to AAAAA, Regions 7 & 8 will be Gwinnett North & South. Besides, this will be a moot point next year when WR, NSWR & HoCo go to AAAA with the opening of Veterans High in 2010.

Sportsfan…I’m well aware of all of the Savannah schools, and when I say “Savannah schools”, I mean just that. I’m not referring to any other teams in their region. So, now that we settled what constitutes a “Savannah school”, please tell me which of them could possibly win a playoff game? Beach, Groves, Windsor Forest, Jenkins, Johnson, or Savannah? Put all of those teams together and they couldn’t beat a decent playoff team. Throw in Benedictine if you want. High School football in Savannah now is crap, except for a couple of private schools.

SouthGARules : Norcross is having a bad season but several of the teams you mentioned would consistantly beat most region 3 teams.
1AAAAA has strong teams at the top in Lowndes, Colquitt, and Northside.
the rest Warner Robins, Valdosta, Cofee, Tift, Houston are no better than most region 7 or 8 teams.
Meadowcreek and Berkmar are another story. They should be allowed to play down a couple of levels.

Population size doesnt make a difference. The schools are placed into Divisions based on sizes of schools, which means all the schools in AAAAA have approx. the same number of students, and therefore the same chances at having quality athletes.
I think its safe to say that the top Gwinnett teams and top South Georgia teams are good, equivalent matches for each other, and the tradition of excellence is what attracts families to bring their kids to these schools, so that they can be seen and have a better chance to play at the next level.
If one region was so dominating, playoffs would be pointless and a bore. Its great that there are so many strong teams from different areas this season. The playoffs are going to be exciting, especially because very few teams are going in as “underdogs.” I think this is one of the first times that the playoffs will truly show who is the best of the best.

Wow that was a low blow.. Of course no one knew were going to lose to alexander. I have no explanation for that nor will i make excuses for it. It was just a game we lost. But think reallistically. I already know Mays isnt going too far into the playoffs. Ima die hard fan and all but im not dumb. What has Newton done other than barely LOSE to Stephenson AND MLK AND Union Grove AND Alcovy. Nobody that you have beaten has more than 3 wins other than Eastside. Bottom line is if you cant beat those teams then your not going to beat Camden…well that’s if you get past luella..

Univ. of Central DeKalb: I have been to that stadium. I honestly expect Northside to play at home throughout the playoffs. Of course, a team is only guaranteed home games through the first two rounds of the playoffs. After that point, it is a coin toss. However, playing at Halford Stadium will not create any sleepless nights in Warner Robins.
I have said this on the board many times. We do not lose to “dancing band” type programs. If the band is dancing and the teenage girls are dress like strippers, Northside is going to win. End of story.

POPS. im a brookwood fan what i can tell you is that South Gwinnett runs a spread offence they can pass and run so u have to be able to do both, Their QB Kent Rollins is a D1 prospect he is like the Colt McCoy of High School football, he can run 90 yards for a TD which he has done, They have 4 elite recievers led by Vanderbilt Commit Jonothan Kroause, also the 6ft 8 beast Chad Ross, there back field is rb’s Aaron Wimberly and Travon Walker both rushing very well with 100 yard games, defence is soild getting better every game, the way to beat them is by the clock keep the ball, and dont make it a back and forward scoring game they never lose

Nice try Goober. When roswell lost that game last year 31-20 it was obviously a down year with several D1 kids graduating and now playing college and also a new head coach who got the job on short notice. Roswell went 5-5 last year and it clearly was a down year. Coach Leo Barker emphasizes physical defense and a solid running game; even though he has an SEC bound wide receiver to catch play-action passes. The bottom line is that Roswell (and Lassitter for that matter) have beat everyone in front of them this year. 9-0 is solid no matter what region you play in because at the high school level, you never know how teenagers are going to perform on any given friday night. For coaches to be able to get thier kids motivated and executing to run the table to 9-0 is really good. I agree that Lassitter will score alot of points; but defense still wins championships and this friday Roswell has the better defense and ball control offennse. In 2 weeks we will really start to answer the questions on which region is strongest this year. First & ten hornets!!!!

Michael 19 – Yes, about what I thought looking at their season. Good evaluation. Thanks.
Etowah will have to control the line of scrimmage on offense, which they are capable of doing with their senior laden O-Line. They should be able to control clock and score on extended drives if they don’t have stupid penalties, like delay of game. It can be frustrating to watch at times, but when they are on they can be very physical and hard to stop. Running for somewhere around 400 yards last week against North Cobb, and dominating Clock. 34-14 final
Defensively those big receiver type’s for South along with the running qb is scary. Overall we tend to play tough D , but are occassionaly vulnerable to the big play.
Special teams have improved on the return side, but our coverage units may have cost us the Woodstock game. That part of our game is worrysome.
Pleaaasse don’t ask me about clock management.
I will make my prediction next week. We have a tune up with a desparate Harrisson this weekend.

Roswellfan,
As Jon Madden would say “The team that scores the most points usually wins”. Who cares about “ball control offense” when you can score on 3 or 4 plays drives at will. Yeah Lassiter has given up some point but when they need to, like in the games against Cennential and Walton (which Roswell should have lost), the Lassiter D makes the plays.

How can you say Roswell should have lost to Walton? If it weren’t for 2 defensive back breakdowns, Waltom would have been held to 7 points. Roswell dominated the second half. There is no doubt that Lassiter has a great passing game, but they still haven’t faced a team with a strong of a running game, over 2200 yards rushing, and a defense that is ALWAYS coming at you for 4 quarters like the Hornets. It will be a great game!

big j,
Friday night showed some signs of hope for continuing in the playoffs for Union Grove. Akins had that touchdown. I was there, next to the play, and didn’t see him out. However, what happened happened and we still won. #14 scrambled most of the game because the pocket collapsed in too much for his comfort zone. We need to stop calling the same plays. Running TJ Moon up the middle can only do so much after doing it three or four plays in a row. On a side note, our special teams looks the best it has all year, especially those two punts that were muffed by Newton. We do need to work on containing the returns, though.
All in all, I am looking forward to this Saturday’s game, and think we have a legitimate shot to contend, if certain things are done.

Decatur 4 Life,
In addition, No School in your Region will beat Bradwell Institute. Your Columbia High Football could are not even good enough to fill our water cooler. If you all were to put your Varsity against our JV Our JV will be hammering you all 21 -0 by halftime……
Lets face it Decatur 4 Life, I don’t think you really know what you are talking about. You read everyone else comments on this blog and piggy back off theirs. I agree that Region 3-AAAAA is a weak Region but do you know how many Region Titles Bradwell Institute have? Do you how many playoff appearances Bradwell Institute have? Do you know how many QUALITY TEAMS Bradwell Institute have beaten outside their Region into the playoffs? Why don’t don’t you go look that up, and find something original to speak about instead of repeating what others have to say.
Since you want to talk about weak, lets talk about your Columbia High Football Record.
Lets see, In your School History, you have 0 State Titles, 0 North Georgia Championship (Conferences) Appearances or Titles, you have only two Region Titles in 1970 and 1981.
Your overall record is 208-240-06 at average of 0.465. Your home record record is 39-42-1 Your Road record is 44-44. Do I need to say more?
Why don’t you compare your Columbia High Stats against Bradwell Institute and see what you come up with. How many playoff appearances have Columbia been to in the last 10 years? 15 years? 20 years? as to compared to Bradwell Institute? How many quality Teams have Columbia High Beaten since the School existed as compared to Bradwell Institute?
So Decatur 4 Life, before you start running off with your mouth about Bradwell Institute , please check out your Columbia High School. In addition, please, please, and please, read my comments as to what I have already mention about Region 3-AAAAA and how far they will go this year before you grab someone else’s shirt tail, and running with it and begin to speak nonsense about Region 3-AAAAA. Have a good day.
