Region 1-AAAAA has re-emerged as the No. 1 region after a year in which that claim was called into dispute. Warner Robins or Valdosta figures to be the best team in the state that does not make the state playoffs.
Here’s the GHSF Daily’s ranking of the best regions in the state by classification. We used the Maxwell Ratings as a guide. It’s based 50 percent on region depth and 50 percent on the top four teams.
The teams we list aren’t necessarily our projections of the seedings for those regions.

Yo, Warner Robins lost to the 1st place team in the state, Grayson, something like 10-0 (don’t know actual score) and beat the University of Northside 21-20, but they won’t even make the playoffs in our region. Yeah, region 1-AAAAA is the toughest.
For the people knocking region 3 AAAAA, I bet as a region they could beat regions 2 and 4 in a roundrobin playoff. Especially this year.

Greetings AVikingFan,
Region 3-AAAAA is very weak with the exceptions of Camden County, and Bradwell Institute. This year I did predict that all of Region #-AAAAA will be one and done this year with the exception of Camden County. If Bradwell Institute didn’t have all of the injured players, I would include Bardwell Institute advancing into the 2nd round this as well. Bradwell Institute have proven themselves to contend with other Regions. In the playoffs, they have beaten Region 1 Warner Robins, Region 1 Valdosta, Region 4 Newnan, Region 2 Carver Of Columbus, Region 4 East Coweta, Region 4 at the time, Baldwin County. For those to just talk about Region 3-AAAAA they need to read a little more. This I do know, out of Region 2-AAAAA If Bradwell Institute did not have all of those injured players, (12 starters, 5 out for the season) I would say Bradwell would more than likely beat Union Grove or a Martin Luther King. But because of that, and being very honest about it, they more than likely not. That is THE ONLY reason why Region 2-AAAAA will more than likely go 3-1. And again, for those NON-Believers thinking that Newton Count will Camden County, you better get off the drugs….. Newton County couldn’t carry Camden County’s water cooler. That should settle it all.

Why even bother with these crap ratings?? Every region has good teams, every year good teams get knocked off in the playoffs, every year a good team wins the championship. Thank goodness for the playoffs – someone has to win a bunch of games to be the champion and that’s it. Drop all other made-up ratings based on opinion!

You never answered my question. Again, what Region 2-AAAAA are you a fan of? Are you saying Martin Luther King? That are the third seed from your Region. Why are you complaining? You can’t afford to drive down to Savannah Georgia to see the game? What is your valid complaint. These are the rules set forth by GHSA. You either live with it or you don’t have to participate with it at all. No one else on the blog are complaining about this but you. Does Martin Luther King have any State Titles in it’s School History? How about a Region Title? Does any team from Region 2-AAAAA have a State Title in it’s School History In Football? Please answer that question? Now that you are speaking with loose lips, I certainly hope that you are a Martin Luther King Fan, and I certainly hope the Windsor Forest beat Martin Luther King. It is a very long shot, but it is possible. I would love to hear from you if Windsor Forest does beat Martin Luther King.

Now I looked up ML King. ML King won the Region in 2007, and that is your ONLY Region Title. I can honestly say that in Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute has one State Title, and several Region Titles. Camden County has State Titles, and several Region Titles.

2008 Region 2-AAAAA !st Round Of the Playoffs Results
Stephenson lost to Coffee County 17-14
Luella Lost to Lowndes County 41-13
Union Grove lost to Northside Warner Robins 24-7
ML King lost to Tift County24-14

Todd: Do you have records of which region the state champs (and runners-up) in each class came from, and where they were seeded going into the playoffs … let’s say going back to when we expanded to five classes? This might be a quantitative, objective way to make a good argument for which region is strongest, at least in the last 10 years.
Bob the Builder: Now, now, Bob. Don’t criticize the ratings or the “raters” or the forum which allows YOU to post your own opinion … after all, it was interesting enough to prompt you to send in a post, wasn’t it. This is fun stuff — no rocket science here.
I predict this will be the first year in the history of the football universe that all five classes will have all #4 seeded teams in the final four.

Omg…who cares what a team has done in the past, its 2009 and a start of new playoffs…people always want to look up stats and history and feel special and think they know something about football. Have any of yall actually seen all of these teams play before..(THE ANSWER IS NO!!) …I gurantee a lot of these teams with state titles, their athletes are doing nothing…but who cares since they have a pretty ring and varsity jacket….
Everyone wants to get mad when a person brags about their team. MLK, Stephensen, or Union Grove may not have state titles, but they are putting A LOT of players into college.

Sportsfan, AJC has Region 3 last out of all regions. You are fan of this region? This the worst of all AAAAA regions. To think that MLK will lose to Windsor Forest, CMON dude. That just hate. King will beat Union Grove this weekend, give credit where credit is due, They beat a SWD team that no one else has really competed with. WINDSOR FOREST LOL. Would they beat Union Grove? At home in the playoffs? We will see. Yeah King aint won no state titles true enough. But look into the history a little further, this school has probably won more games in the same span they have been open as your beloved Windsor Forest. MLK has played in GA Dome for the semifinals before(AAA), that year they beat Carrollton, Peach Co. consecutive weeks on the ROAD in the playoffs. Didn’t see that in your search did you, history buff? Can’t believe your trying to belittle MLK, with region 3 teams no less. PREDICTION: MLK, STEPHENSON, and UNION GROVE roll 1st round, we all know who they are playing. And who cares about Bradwell winning state titles region titles, Union Grove and MLK will roll this team, hollaback afterwards sportsfan.

You know, I have to give you an apology…. I have studied ML King statistics, and noticed also that Union Grove have not beaten ML King since being in Region 2-AAAAA. But I do know that Union Grove is playing very well this year. They will have to travel to ML King to play you all. I believe they will pull the upset on you all this year. Ml King players are small and I believe that Union Grove players are larger. I just don’t know about the speed, and depth.

Newton County,
AJC has been WRONG several times this year. Heck, My record of predictions have been better than AJC. But have you really read my comments? I said the region 3-AAAAA will be one and done except for Camden County. I don’t care who ML King has beaten at this point. but I will say that Union Grove will beat ML King this year. If ML King plays Windsor Forest they will beat them, and they should be lucky, and fortunate.
Newton County, I am a Region 3-AAAAA Bradwell Institute Fan. This year, I am being realistic, and due to the injuries that Bradwell Institute have, they wont go any farther than the first round. Unless those players come back for the playoffs. I hear that 5 of the twelve starters that are injured are out for the season. I have never seen anything like this before. But if it was not for that, Bradwell Institute would beat ML King this year no matter where they played. Some of the same Schools you have mention example Peach County, Bradwell Institute has beaten them. As a matter of fact, Peach County have never beaten Bradwell Institute.
As far you ML King roll any team, they had better try to roll Union Grove in which I don’t believe they will this year. So, you all pack your lunch for a six hour ride to Savannah, Georgia.

Good deal. Bradwell Institute is a consistent program and Ive heard of them being a consistent playoff team throughout the years. But what AJC speaks of in this particular article is based on how the collective regions have done this year. Pretty factual to me. Also you posted stats of what the respective regions did last year in the playoffs, OK. Good stuff Region 1 vs 2( strong vs decent) 3 vs 4( weak vs weak). Region 3 and 4 couldn’t have gotten a better draw for first round matchups. Region 2 got Region 1, considered the strongest region in the state. No comparison. Also about Newton Co. please stay sleep on us, this aint your daddy’s Rams. They will come to play we aint scared of Camden Co.

Newton County,
Okay, You have Region 3-AAAAA. The majority of teams are from Savannah Georgia with the exception of Camden County and Bradwell Institute. What do you want us to do? We don’t align the Regions, GHSA does. We take what is handed to us and we play. How many people on this blog ask that Camden County be assigned to region 1-AAAAA? Lots of them. There are by laws that was voted on and must be adhered to. We all know that the football Programs in Savannah is terrible with hardly any support financially or morally. A lot of the Savannah Schools should be playing down in Class AAA and AAAA.
I do agree with the assesment of AJC this year commenting about the Regions and how they will fare as the outcome of the playoffs. Heck, I am the first to say this about Region 3-AAAAA being one and done this year with the exception of Camden County. As a matter of fact, Bradwell Institute will travel down to Kingsland Georgia to play Camden County this Friday. I hear that some of the injured players moved from being injured to just plain hurt. At Bradwell Institute, the saying is if you are hurt, you can play. If you are injured, then you can’t play.
Now as far as Newton County goes, No one expects you all to be afraid of Camden County. But just expect the inevitable. Camden County will trounce all over you. I can tell you better after this Friday when we play against them.
Also, In Region 2-AAAAA, I give you all a lot of respect. Stephenson, ML King and Union grove are a very good football team, no doubt about it. That is why said what I said. Region 2-AAAAA may very well go 3-1 after the first round.

WOW sportsfan put the bottle down dude no one has scored 28 on us this year in a GAME let alone a half. Be for real. You guys got rolled by Houston Co. by three touchdowns, we have allowed 3 TD’s in a game ONCE this season. Union Grove scored a season high 21PTS against our defense in the 2nd to last game of the year. Stephenson beat us 13-7 OT. MLK beat us 15-8. Alcovy beat us 17-8. Union Grove 21-19 over us. Four playoff teams. Your beloved Bradwell has lost to 2 teams that will be sitting home when the playoffs next week. Jenkins and Houston Co. Are a combined 6-12 this year. Looking at your schedule, we would be at least 9-1 against your schedule. But you guys will be 6-4 after you play Camden next week. Get out the past homie Bradwell aint worth the print THIS YEAR. Win games your supposed to win first. Lets focus on that. Then lets stop blaming injuries for why your team loses to subpar teams. A 3-6 Houston Co. team that outscores teams from your region 67-28. Newton County,
Have Newton County ever played against Houston County? That was the beginning of the injuries of our starters when we played against them, spiraling us downward into the regular season. If Newton County only allowed 3 touchdowns per scored against them, then that tells me that the Region is very suspect. Newton County is the bottom rung team for the Playoff Region.
Houston County is in Region 1-AAAAA. Bradwell Institute lost to two non contending teams in the regular season as I have already explained how and why. But I will agree with you Newton County. That was last year when you all went 0-4. Region 3-AAAAA have not done that. LOL…. You all got a large goose egg last year. This year Newton County plays bottom rung Luella. You had better hope that Newton County wins or else you all will be sitting at home until next year. LOL…. If Bradwell Institute loses, we are still in.

You’d think the Lowndes’ players had pulled out guns and knives and started a full-blown war!?! I remember days of traveling to schools and having to get dropped off the bus on the 50 yard line and then picked up on the 50 yard line directly after the game to keep from getting hit by a brick. Of course South Georgia has the best teams. The only reason Parkview and metro Atl won so many championships a few years ago is that Atl money bought off the GHSA to make a 5A divisions leaving most of the South Georgia teams in division 4A because they were too small. Notice how metro Atl hasn’t won too many championships since the 1AAAAA teams have worked their way back up to enough enrollment to be in 5A. The only reason metro ATL has won some titles since then is because the teams in the little SEC (1AAAAA)are so beat down from playing in that divison they are hurting too bad in the playoffs. If metro Atlanta wants to win more titles in the biggest division they are going to have get their schools boosters and daddies money to buy the GHSA off and make a division 6A (AAAAAA), so they can out enroll the South GA schools again.

Mike since GA went to AAAAA in 2000, Atlanta area teams have won 4 of the 9 titles. That’s probably the best nine year period ever for Atlanta area schools. BTW, since 1999, the last year of AAAA being the highest classification, Lowndes has won 4 titles, and Camden 2. That means 4 out of 10 for Atlanta area schools. But your post is correct that the deck is stacked against South Georgia teams when it comes to AAAAA IN ALL SPORTS!

It was fun sportsfan good luck to Bradwell. But 6-4 is 6-4. Newton has been competitive in all its games. The region can’t be too suspect if MLK beat SWD and Newton blasted Eastside, a state quarterfinalist last year that went 11-2 and is about to win their second straight 8-AAA region title this weekend. Your region reps have beaten who? Camden has 2 losses. Good luck though Bradwell but no excuses. How do you know Newton will get beat by Camden Co.? RHS – You are right. If this were consistent… Region 5AAAAA with McCeachern # 6 and Woodstock #10 should be ahead of Region 6AAAAA as should Region 8AAAAA with #1 Grayson and a very rankeable South Gwinnett.
However … Must note that this ranking of regions is done by the GHSFD using Maxwell’s ratings, and not the AJC’s poll. It all goes out the window when the playoffs start.

These rankings aren’t based entirely on the Maxwell computer ratings, but they were the starting point.
Just because McEachern and Woodstock are rated higher than Lassiter and Roswell doesn’t mean that the Lassiter-Roswell region can’t be stronger. Part of the reason that Lassiter and Roswell aren’t ranked is because neither has played each other, so when searching for defining wins, neither really has one. Not that Woodstock really does either, but we’re splitting hairs when comparing those teams. ..
Region 6-AAAA is down this year. I think the computer rankings alerted me to this fact, and when you look at the region as a whole, I can see it. SWD is outstanding, but there’s no team close to SWD among the rest, and there’s not much depth there.

goober: You’re correct, that would be an objective way of rating the regions, but this is more about how they rate in 2009, not historically. But if you want to tackle the research you suggest, I’ll publish it. : ) It would be interesting.

Regarding Roswell and Lassiter’s “preseason patsies”…Roswell scheduled a Div 1AAAAA opponent-Tift County, Lassiter scheduled a traditional rival from 4A who was a 2008 playoff team-Sprayberry, and mighty, mighty Lowndes schedules a 3A (5-5 in 2008)team and a 4A (7-5 in 2008) team…both at home ‘cuz they have trouble goin’ on the road and behaving like humans, not thugs.

South Gwinnett is a great team this year. The best since the 2003 team. That team was 12-1 losing

As a fomer Camden County player I know we play in the leakest region in the state. Its time for a new region 3 AAAAA. Check this region out. Bradwell, Beach , Brunwick, Camden, Glynn, Statesboro, Ware, and Johnson. It wont be the best but it will be good.

AVikingsfan, NOBODY IN 3-AAAA besides Camden stays on the field with our 4 from Region 2-AAAAA. Have you seen their credentials OMG quit hating on Region 2. Region 3 blows check the resume. I just showed the Bradwell guy what non playoff teams from your region do to their proclaimed ” best”. Valdosta 55 Windsor Forest 6, Houston Co. 34 Bradwell Inst 14. Show me how Region 3 best beats Region 2 best. Stick to the script Vikingsfan you got a strong wagon to ride on, don’t blow it trying to hype up that weak region. Region 2 overall is pretty weak Ill admit that, but region 3 please Windsor Forest has beaten nobody with a winning record but will be a #2 seed watch Union Grove/MLK roll these guys first round on their turf. Cmon playoffs even if Luella pulls the upset, Region 3 as a whole LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

SportsFan 31313, UG beat MLK in 2002 31-12! I have to tell you I am with you this weekend; I think we will beat MLK. We did a pretty good job containing Stephenson until later in the 2nd half and I know MLK is not faster than Stephenson. Our DE “Big Ant” who has already committed to GA Tech is not going to let them get around him. We have the horsepower; we just need to learn how to fire on all 8 cylinders not 6!

NHS Eagle,
You are way off base. It’s apparent that you haven’t read all of the comments speaking about the Savannah Schools. You mentioned that you are a native Savannahian, then you already know that historically, there are ONLY two teams from that Region who could contend. But please read all the comments before speakings about the Savannah Teams.

Greetings Dollar DP,
I would agree with that but find another team besides Johnson. of Savannah. Whenit was AAAA The State’s Highest Classification, we (Bradwell) Played against Statesboro, Brunswick, Camden, Coffee, Glynn Academy. We played against Ware County a few years before AAAA came about. Ware had beaten us once. It would be very interesting if that was to happen.

Newton County, regarding your 1:58 post, yes you are correct about the score being 21-19, but remember that TD where the ref said #5 stepped on the line. I was sitting real close by and I did not see it, but I am sure if the ref said he did then he did. Your defender wasn’t even close so there was no reason for #5 to be that close to the line in the first place. That would have put us up to 28 points. I can assure you that if we run #5 at QB for the entire game our points for go way up, anyway good game.

Todd Holcomb nice to see you check in with that 6AAAA evaluation. Even better to see that you acknowledge region 4AAAA as the best, and you don’t need a computer to figure it out. Seen all of the top 5 in this region play don’t be suprised if they are 3-1 after first round against region 1. Looks like a good Dutchtown team will stay home unless they shock North Clayton Friday. Im from Decatur reside in Newton Co. now, and these boys play ball down here. Region 6AAAA is not good overall in football this year, they better watch out because Region 7 looks deep, SWD please don’t sleep on NW Whitfield/ Sprayberry. I love the Panthers, just don’t want them to succumb to all this hype. Region 4 is better this year check my stats from earlier about non-region records and who our best played and region 6 best played. NO CONTEST

South Gwinnett is mainly a passing team, but the running game has stepped it up a level lately.
The defense is getting better by the game. Last week playing Brookwood they stepped it up.
Holding them to 14 points. South had not beaten Brookwood since 2003. A well balanced unit.

Hall County has some of the best football in the state coming from North Hall, Gainesville & Flowery Branch. Hall County is a Region 7-AAA heavy team, and since 2002 has sent at least one team to the Class AAA Quarterfinals or better. Also, three teams out of Region 7-AAA have made Dome appearances. North Hall did in 2007, Flowery Branch did in 2008 & Gainesville did in 2002 and is well equipped to make a run there again this season along with Creekview and North Hall having legitimate shots as well. I can agree with the Class AAA region ratings. Especially Region 5-AAA. They seem to be a weak region, and their frontrunner, St Pius X, I believe is highly overrated. And they might be meeting North Hall in the Sweet 16 this season. That will be a real Region 7 vs Region 5 test.

pops, assuming your an etowah fan there are several things to watch for… Im not familiar with etowah but your gonna have to score some points if you dont have an above average defense. they have what seems like 5-6 recievers who are well over 6′2 there running back aaron wimberly could be the most underrated in the state, if you give him any blocking at all hes gonna run for days. Finally i think their quarterback is very underrated as well, for what he lacks in size he makes up for in quickness and strength, plays baseball so has a strong arm he likes to scramble as well. Defense is the kryptonite, they wear down on long drives which was evident against us, when they get tired they commit game changing penalties as they say the best defense is a good offense. That being said i think they are beatable if you can either get strong pressure or have lockdown coverage, if not itll be a long day

The way I see it in AAAA there are only 5 teams that have a serious chance to win the title. Griffin, SWD, Marist, North Clayton, and maybe Sandy Creek. I think regions 4AAAA and 6AAAA are about even this year and the champion will more than likely come from these regions. No disrespect to the other teams in AAAA but from the way they have played this year these teams appear to be the best.

HornetFan: We play ‘em at home for three reasons: (1) Like any other team, we win more at home than on the road. Example: 31-20 vs. Roswell in 2007 playoffs. (2) We make money, even by paying visiting teams, because we put 10,000-12,000 fans at every home game. (3) Our thugs play better at home than your visiting thugs.
Oh, and one more thing. Lowndes’ “weak” opponents this year are 56-34, or 62%. Lowndes has played one of the toughest schedule in the state according to Maxwell. Roswell’s opponents this year are 39-51, or 43%. Case closed, your Honor.
