Ready to ramble: It’s region title week

Get ready to ramble edition as region title week is underway …

Only two teams can win AAAA. That’s Griffin and SWD. Just don’t so any other that’s worthy. …

In AAA, it’s almost as clear-cut: Gainesville or Carver, probably Carver. Peach has a shot. Nobody else. Carver jumped Peach and SPX to #2. Time to get real in the AAA rankings. …

Buford will win AA, but if not, it’s going to take a passing team to do it, like Calhoun. Tempted to say that Fitz and Thomasville are better than Calhoun, but Calhoun has the best shot head-to-head vs. Buford. No one-dimensional team will beat Buford. …

Lincoln County won’t win A, but news flash: This is a well-coached team. Only about a half-dozen starters returned, and the team’s best player is out for the season, and Lincoln finds ways to win. But the winner of Class A will have the letter ‘W’ in its name somewhere.

AAAAA is wide open. Lowndes is the best team, but won’t have the best draw. It’s one of those rare seasons when any team in the Top 10 could win it.

This is a better week of football than the first round, which will see very few upsets. Look at these games, all for the region title -

Lassiter vs. Roswell (6-AAAAA)
North Gwinnett vs. Peachtree Ridge (7-AAAAA)
Sandy Creek vs. Banneker (5-AAAA)

As for who is stronger THIS YEAR between 4-AAAA and 6-AAAA is stronger, you got to go with Region 4. Like Griffin Bear #1 said, the top 5 teams in the league went undefeated against non-region schedules. After SWD and Marist, region 6 is horrible. Tucker is OK this isn’t the same team from last year. Stone Mtn, love that school, but they are not better than Dutchtown or Alcovy. Lithonia lost to Avondale , nuff said. Chamblee is helter-skelter. Look who region 4 has beaten out of region. Banneker, possible region champ, playoff team( North Clayton), Newton, Possible playoff team and Eastside possible region 8-AAA champ and sure playoff team(Alcovy, mind you a school playing its 4th year of varsity football) Dunwoody, possible region champ, sure playoff team and Spalding sure playoff team(Griffin). Region 6 brace yourself. SWD lost to MLK Top 10 team in AAAAA and sure fire playoff team. Marist lost to St. Pius Top 10 team in AAA. Tucker beat Brunswick a possible playoff team, and there are no other games like that to mention of. The Top 5 combined total record of Region 4: 38-8. Region 6: 33-12 Our last place team has scored 20 combined pts all season and has a win. North Springs 13pts no wins. Region 4 is better this year in football. As far as all sports go, give me a break, Marist wins state titles in sports that most region 4 schools barely field teams in. No contest there. But far as football goes region 4 is better this year, more challenging teams, the non-region success says it all.

Its laughable that you say Griffin and SWD are the only 2 teams than can win AAAA. SWD has a chance, Griffin won’t do anything. TCC, Westside Macon, and Marist are all better than Griffin. Don’t be surprized if we see a TCC-Westside or a SWD-Marist rematch for the state title.

so tom letspeich or whatever your name is, your saying that grayson cant beat 7 AAAAA second best team… how is it that they beat region 1’s best team??? and to the comment about lassiter, i completely agree that offense is scary but from what ive read and seen and according to their scores they cant stop anybody either. Id take our chances against them with our ball control offense and look to our d to make a couple of stops in the game. I wouldnt put it past collins hill to beat them in the first round though

would very much like to see a rematch in the qt finals with buford and charlton county, calhoun is a 2 man show fitz will shut down derick r., then what? do they have a running game? fitz defense is to solid, give up 12 points and they will score 3-4 times before you know what hit you, special teams will play a big role in the playoffs, fitz is relentless.

Sorry Reeze, still not buying the McEachern hype yet. Gave up:
32 points to Brookwood (recod is 4-5),
31 points to Woodstock (record is 8-1), **5 teams have held Woodstock to less points and those teams have a combined record of 19-26**
21 points to East Paulding (record is 5-4),
28 points to Marietta (record is 4-5)
29 points to North Cobb (record is 2-7)

Lets forget Lowndes for a change as you know what they score and give up against tougher competition.

Take Grayson who has scored just as many points as McEachern while
giving up 27 points to only 1 team this year. The next highest point totals given up by Grayson are 16, 12, 10 and the rest zero.

Take North Gwinnett who has scored a comparable amount of points as McEachern while only giving up 23 points once, and the rest in order are
16, 13, 11, 7, 7, 6, 3, 0. By the way North beat that same Brookwood team 41-13.

Oh shucks I just can’t stand myself.
Lowndes Has scored 396 to giving up 62.
McEachern Has scored 389 to giving up 180.
Against 7 of Lowndes 9 opponents the first string was out
no later than the end of 3rd quarter thereby making this
scenario that much the more lopsided.
In fact in at least 5 of Lowndes games they were sustituting
2nd string at beginning of 3rd quarter.

Lets not just count Marist in 6-AAAA Championships. SWD has 2007 Men and Women Track titles (thats 2), 2007 and 2008 Womens basketball and Womens Track titles (Thats 4 +2 = 6). Tucker has Mens basketball for 2007 and Columbia has Mens basketball for 2006 (Thats 2 + 4 + 2 = 8). Let it also be known these are the titles I remember off the top of my head, with more research I’m sure the list of titles will go on. We win titles across the board in 6 AAAA. We arent a one trick pony with Football. We have THE BEST ATHLETES in the state. Point Blank Period. Anyone try and argue with more titles please.

4AAAA- is wide open. Any team can win this baby. There are a few undefeated squads and a ton of 1-lost squads. Not just looking at the top ten….do you know how many teams have only one lost and are not in the top ten? This is great , not to mention exciting! This is why you play the game. Any thing can happen. A team can come out from anywhere that youve never heard-of or seen play! Dont just favor the ranked….thats why there are words called (UPSETS) (UNDERDOG) (OVERACHEIVERS) (UNDERACHEIVERS) (FAVORITES) and (SLEEPERS). I wish everybody well. Lets-go 4AAAA!

Re: I CAN’T BELIEVE IT:
Lowndes’ has their rings to show what they can do. Believe me, I didn’t care for the lack of class we showed last year, so they want to show what they have. It was a one man show for Lowndes last year. Not the same story this year. Lowndes can travel and they win far more than they loose.

I don’t know if I can speak for all of them, but this season has been all about getting back to the top and hopefully it means going through your field to get there.

Before Grayson lays it’s claim to fame, they have to get to the big dance. I promise, I’d like nothing more to see Lowndes and Grayson meet up for the title. Probably would be one of the best games in the state in a long time.

Both teams just need to do their parts because the only poll that counts in the final one.

It is interesting that everyone who forecasts the playoff match ups makes it seem that Lowndes should be trembling at the thought of having to play Camden County. Since 2003, Lowndes has played Camden three times. In 2003, the second year of the Randy McPherson era, Lowndes lost by a touchdown and Camden went on to beat Valdosta for the title. In 2004 and 2007, Lowndes beat Camden 30-0 and 10-0 respectively and went on to win the crown both times. While there has always been a mutual respect between the two teams, I really don’t believe Mr. Herron has the caliber of team this year as he has had in the previous years. I thank Yo for the astounding numbers of 396 points scored to the 62 points given up. I can assure you if the starters played every game ,all game those offensive numbers would be higher and the points given would be lower. I don’t think Lowndes is shuddering at the thought of going to Kingsland.

MAYS HIGH—I have to apoligize to you for bashing you all year-long! When I first saw you play this year…I was not impressed at all! I felt like (SOLOMAN) was a better coach and he had more control of the team. You were not fundamentally sound…so I took a lot of stabs at you! But never the less…you showed me something…(you kept winning games). You got better and better! Though you lost a couple of games…you kept winning! The sad part is that you may end up with an 8-2 record for the second year in a row… and not make the play-offs! Thats not fair to you! I think you deserve a chance. To- go 16 out of 20 or should I say 80% and not play the post-season is not fair at all…especially when there are teams with worst records or even losing records that make the play-offs! Im very sorry! The GHSA ought to do something about this!

Most of the top teams have had games where they built a big lead and played younger kids the 2nd half, this is not unique to Lowndes.

Someone from Lowndes mentioned earlier that last year was a one man show and thats not the case this year. That maybe true but if Grayson has to play Lowndes again I bet i’m not the only one thats awful glad that one man show has moved on to FSU. That kid was amazing.

Jim: I’ll give you 3 candidates: Colquitt County, South Gwinnett & McEachern.
AVikingFan: You are right about TCC-Marist, especially 1996 & 1997. Not only epic playoff games, but memorable Corky Kell Classic games as well. Just watching that game alone was worth the price of admission. One, an OT game & another one decided on a 2pt conversion.
Re Grayson: They are vulnerable to the pass, however, try to get the ball from the offense. Against South Gwinnett, the Rams dominated TOP 33 to 15 minutes.
Re Dacula: They have a 2 QB system, with a runner & a passer. They run the spread option and their defense is inconsistent. They gave up 35 to South Gwinnett & over 40 to Grayson, but were only 1 of 2 teams (P’Tree Ridge) to hold Charles Perkins under 100 yards.

NTH Trojans I agree that 7AAA is the deepest region this year in AAA. As far as Region 2AAA goes, as long as Carver has the home field and local officials it will be difficult for anyone to dethrone them….which brings up a question I have for anyone. Here it is: “What is the format for picking the officials for play-off games?” Someone please inform me. Also, NTH Trojans, I realize the 48-6 loss suffered by Troup at the hands of WACO looks ugly.I have no explanation as to what might have happened. But trust me, this Troup team has the potential to pull off some major upsets. In the pre-season I had Troup in the Top 10. Still believe they could go deep in the play-offs. Too many weapons.

Get real folks, Colquitt is not going to beat NSWR no matter how many candles you blow out before making your wish. Lowndes will go into the playoffs as the number 2 seed – precisely what they earned during the season. They can go have a good game against Camden, exactly like Grayson already did this season. If Lowndes is that good, they will have to prove it on the field, just like the other teams in Georgia.

Meanwhile, NSWR did not exactly get an easy draw. I hope they loose the coin toss. We are looking forward to seeing them here in Suwanee for the quarterfinal game. They are going to have to prove it on the field also.

Prove it on the field, folks. The way I see it, it is very possible the teams from 1AAAAA will be done after the quarter finals. If you are really “all that” maybe you will make it to the semi-finals, but you are going to have to prove it on the field.

Grayson has a great team. It will take a great team to beat them;however, winning the big one is often hard too do. Best of luck to Grayson. Camden had to replace 15 starters this season. They are a lot better than they were vs Grayson in the dome.I am sure Grayson is better as well. Will tradition continue? I recon that will be decided in the play=offs. Often it is very hard for a team to win the big game. The wildcats will be ready. Who wins between Lowndes and Camden in the second round will be the question. South Georgia rules. Go Wildcats.

All this bluster back and forth is just a bunch of sound and fury. The fact is we’ll find out soon enough who gets to be champion in each classification. SW Dekalb might very well be the best team in AAAA. If they are they’ll win it. If Griffin is stronger they’ll win. And if somebody out there is better, then they’ll win the championship. Being one of the top 10 teams in the state is a pretty good reward regardless of who does win.

no consideration for Eastside in AAA?? Quarter-finals last year, lost to Cairo in a monsoon, already clinched 8AAA regon championship and not challenged to this point. Not one mention about the boys from Carrollton in all the AAA talk. Keep ignoring the Trojans and we’ll see what happens in the playoffs. This team barely lost to Eastside in the 2nd round last year without their starting quarterback (a FRESHMAN backup started). The 2009 version is MUCH better than last years team, dominating opponents by an average score of 38-5. The scary thing is there are about 14 or 15 starters who will be back next year, including the quarterback.

ok guys theres some good conversation goin on. 5A is very wide open. Lownes co does need to be alert cause if they play candem it will be a physical game, still candem should be favorites along wid grayson the only team in ga to beet candem is grayson and that game was in the dome for reason opener. Lownes your good not this year though. I seen yall play coulquit and if that quater back had experience game could have been different. And know coulquit should not be top ten team just cause all other teams play out of state great out of state teams. But win this week and yall be number 9. Now 4a ball only one statement thomas county started out wid guys who had flue now they healthy upset alert guys. To 3a ima have to say carver-columbous is the most physical team in the conference. Now my favorite league 2a lol there fun to watch every one talks bout bufort and calhoun well i feel like im goin to watchstate title game friday when fitzgerald host thomasville. Cant say who will win but canes have a quick d wid offence out of there mind. But they wont rush for 300 yards not on thomasville d-line those guys are men. As for 1a ill never count out clinch but i gotta go wid savanna country day. They opted to drop from 2a cause could not handle it. Slalom1, still no credit for Carver beating Lagrange. I guess when your team loses its the officating. When Carver beat won at Lagrange what was it then. You Lagrange Fans sound like the Buffalo wild wing ad where the ref trips the player to keep him from scoring. Since you think region 7aaa is so deep name 4 teams out of that region that is better than the top four from region 2aaa. Look at the schedule of the teams and see who has played a harder out of region schedule. Who in region 7aaa has played a team better than Newnan or NSWR. There are always bad calls in every game at every level. Teams that lose at Lagrange feel the same way you do, but its just an excuse. The refs did not beat lagrange. The Carver offense, defense and coaching staff did.

Newton Co.: Great stuff, but your non-region stats is deceiving when you consider the non-region opponents of your mighty region’s opponents. Those non-region opponents are 38-46 combined.
Here you go:
Team Opponent Record
Mt. Zion Lovejoy 3-6 Bottom feeder of a week region
Shiloh 4-6 Not a good team

North Clayton Riverdale 2-7 See Lovejoy
Banneker 7-2 Probably a one and done in playoffs

Griffin Dunwoody 6-3 Average 3A team
Spalding 5-4 Average 3A team

Alcovy Newton 5-4 Must win last game for trip to Camden
Eastside 7-2 Average 3A team

Dutchtown Northgate 3-6 Bottom feeder
Lee Co. 2-6 Bottow feeder

Region 6-AAAA
Tucker Brunswick 6-3 Beat them on the road
Marist loss St. Pius 9-0 State contender
SWD loss MLK 8-1 Probably No. 2 seed from region

I would say that Region 6-AAAA teams played the tougher non-region schedule.
