Ready to ramble: It’s region title week

Get ready to ramble edition as region title week is underway …

Only two teams can win AAAA. That’s Griffin and SWD. Just don’t so any other that’s worthy. …

In AAA, it’s almost as clear-cut: Gainesville or Carver, probably Carver. Peach has a shot. Nobody else. Carver jumped Peach and SPX to #2. Time to get real in the AAA rankings. …

Buford will win AA, but if not, it’s going to take a passing team to do it, like Calhoun. Tempted to say that Fitz and Thomasville are better than Calhoun, but Calhoun has the best shot head-to-head vs. Buford. No one-dimensional team will beat Buford. …

Lincoln County won’t win A, but news flash: This is a well-coached team. Only about a half-dozen starters returned, and the team’s best player is out for the season, and Lincoln finds ways to win. But the winner of Class A will have the letter ‘W’ in its name somewhere.

AAAAA is wide open. Lowndes is the best team, but won’t have the best draw. It’s one of those rare seasons when any team in the Top 10 could win it.

This is a better week of football than the first round, which will see very few upsets. Look at these games, all for the region title -

Lassiter vs. Roswell (6-AAAAA)
North Gwinnett vs. Peachtree Ridge (7-AAAAA)
Sandy Creek vs. Banneker (5-AAAA)

TODD HOLCOMBE, You need to quit holding LOWDNES COUNTY jock, because if they were the best team in AAAAA. They would be 9-0 instead of 8-1 and still rank no.1 in GEORGIA and rank no.2 NATIONALLY. GRAYSON IS THE BEST TEAM IN AAAAA right now not LOWDNES.

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT….BELIEVE IT!

Grayson deserves their #1 ranking, but #1 does not mean the best.
It just means you are higher ranked.
When you have #1 at the end of the season then you can hold to the claim best in state, whether you actually are or not.

Don’t fret, you will get to prove your ranking soon enough.

Carver is the real deal. They have weapons at every position. Crowell is the best running back in the state. The defense is punishing the other teams I don’t see any AAA team beating them.

Yo No.1 is No.1 until you beat the No.1 , No.1 means you are the best. So, FLORIDA is not the best team in the country they rank NO.1. So FLORIDA RANKING MEANS NOTHING until they win it all.I thought NO.1 mean you are the best YO.

CJ, I wouldn’t count out GAINESVILLE and ST. PIUS to quit. FUNDAMENTALS goes along way in the playoffs and both teams are fundamentally sound.

Being no.1 in these polls means nothing right now. After the games at the dome then you will be crowned no.1 no matter what the AJC thinks. It’s good for school spirit but those rankings don’t create more points on the football field.

Who has Gainsville or St. pius really played. No one that is good. I don’t expect anyone to quit when it’s playoff time. I’m just saying that Carver has been tested and looks like the real deal.

CJ: I agree with you about Carver. I do think Gainesville and SPX are pretty good, though. SPX has beaten Marist. Gainesville’s schedule has been generally weak, but there’s obvious talent on that team. Only Carver in AAA can match up with Gainesville in high-end players.

I Can’t Believe It: This wouldn’t be the first time that the best team in the state was 8-1. Off the top of my head, the years 2005 and 2007 come to mind. But I also think AAAAA has so many good teams that I can’t go to the bank on any one team. Lowndes, Grayson, North Gwinnett, Northside — they all can be had.

Todd Holcombe, We know you love LOWDNES, but if NSWR handle their business this weekened we will see if LOwdnes is the best team. 2005 LOWNDES and 2007 LOWNDNES. Plus your North Gwinnett Bulldogs will lose this FRIDAY.

Who would have thought at this point of the season that Grayson would have as many wins as Brookwood & Parkview COMBINED. I’m not surprised Grayson is 9-0, but am surprised that Brookwood is 4-5 & Parkview is 5-4. If Parkview loses Friday night, they would be out of the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. Also, the last 4 years Parkview is 24-18 with 3 first round exits. This was a program that advanced to the quarterfinals 11 years in a row. Todd, what do you attribute the decline to?

ICANT BELIEVE IT… if you knew todd holcomb then you who know he picked ptree ridge to win the region before it started. so hes definately not a bulldogs fan. NG will prove why it is #2 in the state this next friday. rival team ptree ridge comes into our house.expect the NG defense to play really well. our offense is whats always talked about but its our defense thats just as good.

So Todd, does that mean you are already picking North Gwinnett over P’Ridge?

How about your thoughts on Lassiter/Roswell? You kept putting both of these teams in the “other teams receiving votes” category for the Top 10, but which one?

BTW, the blog clock has not “fallen” back. ;-)

Where is the Colquitt Co. Packers? Shouldn’t they be in the top ten?

Todd Holcomb

Peachtree Ridge-North Gwinnett and Roswell-Lassiter are pretty tough to predict. …

I felt Peachtree Ridge was better than NG in preseason and still tend to think that is the case. More talent on defense. North Gwinnett plays outstanding defense, which is what counts, but personnel-wise, I suspect PR is better on that side. What I didn’t expect was for CJ Uzomah to be that good. He’s hard to handle and could control the game. Should be a great game, but I think I’ll pick PR.

Lassiter-Roswell is even tougher to pick because it’s hard to anticipate how a team will handle Lassiter’s no-huddle spread offense. I’ll probably pick Roswell because Roswell has a better defense, but unless a defense is really outstanding, Lassiter might put up 40 anyway. But as of now, I’d say Roswell.

re: Colquitt County: I think Colquitt is about as good a choice as any to be ranked #9 or #10, but I just like Woodstock and Camden and Peachtree Ridge a little better. I assumed in preseason they’d be better, and nothing has happened to challenge that assumption. Yes, PR was pummeled by Lowndes, but so was Colquitt. Colquitt is one of those teams like Roswell and Lassiter that could show up in a Top 10 without my thinking it’s a terrible idea.

I also believe Colquitt should be in the top ten…at least #8 in front of a two loss Camden team…I sure hope Colquitt gets their defense clicking…that’s the only thing holding them back from being respected. The whole Lowndes Nation will be rooting for the Packers and the Wildcats will be cheering Lowndes on friday night. Maybe the Packers will be in the rankings next week.

Don’t count Colquitt out ..they could win it all. Their 2nd year coach has done a great job rebuilding.

Lowndes is also the best damn HS team I’ve seen in last 15 years. Everyone has bad days but their second team is better than most HS 1st teams.

Here are some thoughts about P Ridge at North.

First, I thought this was a home game for P Ridge, but it turns out it is a home game for North. That would obviously tend to favor North except the teams are so close that the stands will be packed with fans from both teams.

A major issue is that North has played for the division title in their 10th game of the season for the last 3 years in a row, and they have lost each of those critical games. North has a monkey on their backs and it may be difficult to expel. I think you have to go with P Ridge until North proves they can “win the big game”, no matter how good North is on paper.

Both defenses are VERY good. I believe either team can shut down any team in the state on any Friday, but that does not mean they necessarily will. I can see a weakness in the P Ridge defense that was exploited briefly by Collins Hill and repeatedly by Lowndes. I do not believe P Ridge can get pressure on QB Uzomah to take him out of his game.

But, the North Offense tends to start slowly. If P Ridge can post a couple scores before North gets untracked, then that could be the game. I think that is the most likely scenario that P Ridge takes a lead and they fail to “Northside” giving North a win when they choke late.

A few interesting facts: Against Duluth, North put up over 30 points with their backup QB, Scott Hosch. Scott lead his little league team to several county championships, and his older brother Twoey led Buford to a State Championship 3 years ago. The kid has an arm, good wheels, and strong field vision. Uzomah was a strong WR before converting to QB. I have no idea whether Sphire has the daring to run some “wildcat” plays but he may have the best tools in the state to do so. In the mean time, P Ridge’s backup QB was incapable of creating a score against the very weak opponent S Forsyth. If the QB goes down at any time during the playoffs, P Ridge is done.

So, I think you have to give the edge to P Ridge, but it could easily go either way. It should be a great game.

I also think both Buford and Gainesville will go all the way.

Todd Holcomb you dont know about teams all over the state. Dont count Jefferson County out in AA . Having a Super Eleven QB BJ Bostic and basically only challenge by number 9 Swainsboro has to count for something . Also what good is LOvett Victory over Buford if u still picking them. Those three hundred pound hgh looking boys are not invincible!

Colquitt is the best team Lowndes played this year, just as Peachtree Ridge was last year. Both were beaten badly on the scoreboard, but it was not indicative of the game. Colquitt vs NSWR should be a great game. I give Colquitt the edge. They win and the entire playoff picture changes with Lowndes (assuming they win???) on the right side of brackets. Could finish win Lowndes vs Camden in finals………..

Lowndes hits you for keeps, often, but when the Grayson boys wouldn’t back down, the Lowndes players reacted the only way they knew how…fighting.

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT………..Grayson can seal the deal by going all the way in the next few weeks……I think that anyone who has seen a Grayson this year knows that they are capable of a 15-0 season……..Changing of the guard ?…Not just yet , It will take a lot for any Team to push Lowndes out of the top spot and make the claim as the best in state with the number of AAAAA championships that the Vikes have this decade…..I am not a Lowndes lover or a Grayson hater ,I have respect for both ,but Grayson to still has to convince Holcolm and the press and the GHSA football nation that they are the best…..It takes more than just a couple good wins over 2 seasons…..At the least a AAAAA championship crown.

I believe some of the Grayson faithful need to get over the fact that football is a combat sport and emotions run high. It takes two to tango and I’m sure none of the Grayson players were doing anything to kick sand in the face of the Vikings during that game ,right? Kids get emotional on both sides of the ball…. your beloved Rams are not completely innocent. Please get over last year. This is 2009 and yes, it will be another year that the Rams will not win a State Title. I believe that possibly that may be the real cause for your disdain for Lowndes. The Vikings have taken the crown year in and year out and the Rams can’t put that ring on their finger. Grayson is ranked #1 right now, enjoy it. It won’t last long come playoff time.

Good to see one of our teams climb the latter. Griffin should be nervous because SWD is on your tail! Too bad for Tucker, but they will be back. Marist is still Marist, so dont put them under the radar. And our fourth spot is still up for grabs. SMHS needs to get their offense straight and Chamblee is picking up momentum. Lithonia is still in the mix as well. I expect typical Lithonia to be finished after this week though. A three way tie would come down to point differential and Stone Mountain has the upper hand in that case.

Re: Callaway: Will be surprised if the Cavs get out of the second round.

Re: Wilkinson: I think the Warriors are one of the Top 10 teams in Class A, but somebody with a good resume had to be left out. I didn’t penalize them for making my prediction wrong, but for losing to SCD. None of the Top 10 teams have lost to an unranked Georgia opponent in Class A. Trying to be objective.

Re: Hiram. If Hiram can beat Hillgrove and Sprayberry, it can beat Dalton. I’d favor Hiram, but it appears the top 3-4 team in that region are about equal. And what do I know about? I picked Rome to win that region, and then picked Hillgrove.

Re: Jefferson County. I don’t see how I could be overlooking JeffCo. I had them ranked higher sooner than any other poll.

Re: Buford: Lots of people are picking Buford. As for the Lovett game, lots of teams win state titles without going undefeated in the regular season. The Westminster game is more telling about Buford than the Westminster game because it just happened.

North GA Fan & Chattooga: W-L record doesn’t tell me much. Whom you’ve played and beaten tells me much more. Every Top 10 team in AA would be at least 8-1 with Chattooga’s schedule.

Re: Charlton vs. MCA. That’s not a winner-take-all because there could be a three-way tie in 2-AA. Definitely a big game, though.

Re: Upsets in AAAAA: I’ve looked at the projected draw, and it just appears that all the home teams are going to win except 3-AAAAA’s No. 2 and perhaps 4-AAAAA’s No. 2.

I dont know why 6AAAA thinks they are so great we destroyed everyone in our region and we will do it to everyone in there region. the only team that even has a chance would be SWD but we have an all around better team. Griffin isnt worried if we can beat dutchtown 28-7 with all the horrible calls made then we can beat anyone if we have some fair officials. so good luck SWD you might be able to cheat your way by us!
