The Georgia High School Football Daily’s Weekend Predictions: Who’s winning and losing in Week Ten

For the AJC

This isn’t the final week of the regular season, but it will have the feel of championship weekend across the state.

Four regions will feature head-to-head matchups between the two top teams, games from which the winner will emerge with the region crown.

In at least three other regions, the first-place team will play one of its top challengers and can secure the title by winning tonight. A loss by the leader, however, could lead to a three-way tie for first place and create some tiebreaker chaos.

Here’s a look at the regions where it’s winner-take-all:

Region 1-AAAA: Westside-Macon and Thomas County Central have crushed their region opposition this season, holding a three-game lead over third-place Hardaway with two games to play. Westside has the third-best scoring offense in Class AAAA, averaging 37.5 points per game. Thomas County Central has averaged 27.4 points since a season-opening, 13-9 loss to rival Thomasville. Give Westside the nod, and its second consecutive region title.

Region 2-AAA: This one’s not quite as clear cut as the others. A Carver-Columbus victory against LaGrange would give the Tigers their third consecutive region title. If LaGrange wins, it would still need to take care of Troup next week to win the championship outright. As it will turn out, LaGrange will need to beat Troup to hang onto second place after it loses to Carver tonight.

Region 3-AAA: No. 9 Baldwin lost two non-region games earlier this season, but they came against No. 2 Peach County and No. 4 Carver-Columbus. They’ve won four in a row since, all region games that put them in a first-place tie with Washington County, which is 8-0 and ranked No. 5. Baldwin won 14-12 last year to win its first region title since 1986. Washington County returns the favor this year.

Region 7-A: It’s always risky to underestimate Larry Campbell and his Lincoln County Red Devils. I’ve been tempted to pick against Lincoln County twice this season (against Hephzibah and Washington-Wilkes), but I resisted the temptation and got the picks correct. I’m going to give in to my gut feeling this time, though, and take No. 6 Wilkinson County to upset the No. 3 Red Devils and claim its first region title since 2000.

Championships or chaos: Buford creates a three-way tie for first place in Region 6-AA by beating Westminster, which beat Lovett, which upset Buford earlier this season. I haven’t picked against Buford all season, and that likely won’t change over the next six weeks. … First-place Southwest DeKalb will wrap up the Region 6-AAAA championship by beating second-place Tucker, avoiding a three-way tie for first place with Marist. Also in 6-AAAA, Stone Mountain beats Chamblee to clinch a playoff berth. … Jackson will secure its second consecutive 4-AAA championship with a victory against Woodward Academy, whose almost certain playoff berth is beginning to look a little shaky.

And congratulations to the five teams that have already clinched their region titles: Grayson (8-AAAAA), Apalachee (8-AAAA), Twiggs County (2-A), Holy Innocents’ (5-A) and Wesleyan (8-A).

Class AAAAA returns to center stage next week, when Lassiter and Roswell will play for the 6-AAAAA title, Peachtree Ridge and North Gwinnett will battle for the 8-AAAAA crown, and the playoff bubble will burst for Brookwood or Parkview.

Carver vs. LaGrange, Here it is: #1-Columbus, Ga officiating. If history repeats itself the Grangers will not only have to beat Carver, but the officials as well. TOUGH task. On a neutral field, the Grangers are the better team. But given the circumstances in order for the Grangers to win they must take advantage of #2- field position. Joe Mansour is capable of pinning the Tigers deep and forcing them to drive the ball 80 or more yards on each possession WITHOUT making a mistake. Should the Carver Tigers falter, the Grangers should have great field possession on each offensive series.(Mansour only has to reach the opponent’s 45 yd line to be in field goal range.) The Grangers MUST stop the big play potential of Carver. Force them to drive the ball without making a mistake.#3- Capitalize on the poor Carver kicking game. Josh Manning may have some opportunities to score on punt returns and on defense.#4 The Grangers must establish the passing game early to set up the run. The Grangers need at least a 14 point cushion going into the 4th quarter as the size of the Carver line on both sides of the ball will begin to wear them down. Synopsis: If the Grangers can stop the BIG play and if the officials will call the game straight, the Grangers win. Those are BIG “ifs” especially the officiating.

Stone Cold,
You know Dalton always gets what they want, so they actually rented a field right across the street from the school so they could tailgate while we’re still in school. I hope we beat them by 42 points, but as long as we win, I don’t really care what the score it. It’s going to be so intense.

I’m surprised there are not some Union Grove and Newton people on here pumping their team. After all it is a big game with Union Grove fighting for the No. 2 and Newton trying to avoid the No. 4 seed. I seed Chip Saye and a couple other bloggers picked UG.

The real Coach G,

I don’t believe that Westside Macon will beat Thomas County Central. Neither do I believe that Baldwin County will beat Washington County. Northside Warner Robins vs Warner Robins: It will be a battle the entire game between the two. If Warner Robins scores first quickly on Northside Warner Robins, then I feel an upset in the making. They better have enough law enforcement there because if it is an upset, there will be more than likely a lot of extra cirricular activity between fans off the field.

Not that the game is of any significance to very many, but the Dunwoody -Druid Hills game is actually tonight — at N. DeKalb Stadium.

Northside is on official “Upset Alert” this weekend. I called this weeks ago. Unlike people who get offended by their teams being put on “Upset Alert” we Eagle fans know that it is always a toss up for the BIG GAME, no matter what the records are.

Luckily, our young Eagles struggled early against Tift County (I called that “trap game” last week). That should mean a very focused group in white tonight. Northside is on “Upset Alert” which means that Warner Robins is going to get hammered.

Northside 31, Warner Robins 7.

SportsFan: Are you on some type of medication? People in Warner Robins do not fight the people who beat them. You play your best and play hard every play. Whatever happens, happens. No one is going to fight. That would be the Lowndes County Viking football team after Grayson ended their dreams of winning a state championship last season. We do not behave in that manner in WR. Northside runs away with this one.

EagleNationRising, you said Northside would run away with this game. Where did they run away to? They should have stayed at the MAC and not “run away.” Warner Robins beat them 21-20. Was not quite like you told us it’d be old friend. With Colquitt having beat WR last week 17-0 and coming to your town next Friday, can they also beat your invincible Eagles? You know if they do your might Eagles would be in 3rd place in 1-AAAAA. But that’s not all bad. The lower right hand part of the playoff brackets look to perhaps be the best bracket to be in.

By Warner robins beating Northside, now region 1-AAAAA doesn’t have to worry about counting “allowed points” to decide a three way tie if Colquitt beats Northside. If the Packers can pull it off, they will be tied with Lowndes, each with one loss. Lowndes won the head to head matchup, thus would then be region champs and Colquitt runners up. Northside would be 3rd in this scenario. If Valdosta and Lowndes both win next Friday, Valdosta will be the region’s 4th place team. Valdosta and Warner Robins each would have 3 losses, but Valdosta won the head to head. Two really good things about WR beating NSWR is now Colquiitt knows the Eagles can be beaten. 2nd, now Colquitt only has to beat Northside, where before Northside lost to Warner Robins, Colquitt would have had to beat Northside and score 12 or more points, in order for Lowndes to be region champs. Now if Colquitt beats Northside it doesn’t matter how much Colquitt scores.

I can’t remember a Friday night when Valdosta has pulled so hard for Lowndes to win like it will be doing this week, and Lowndes will be pulling just as hard for Colquitt to win. Lowndes has to beat Warner Robins for Valdosta to be number 4. Colquitt has to beat Northside to have a chance at 1st or 2nd place, and Lowndes needs Colquitt to beat Northside so they can be 1st. Man is there going to be some pressure to win this last game for a LOT of teams. Not just Roswell and Lassiter , Fitzgerald and Thomasville, or N. Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge, but all over the state. This week is truly like a playoff game.

I don’t care what anyone says but Northside W.R. ain’t going to beat the Packers; Colquitt County is better than Lowndes; even though lowndes won that game, the Packers turned the ball over 5 of 6 times deep in the Lowndes territory; and lowndes will tell you that they did not run up alot of yards on this team; if they play again right now the Pack will get that a*U&#.

slalom1 – You think that the referee’s has something to do with a 28-7 rear end kicking? I know that the superior team in all of GA is Carver-Columbus. The evidence is the nine (9) D-1 senior commit’s. I haven’t even mentioned the number of juniors that are being courted by D-1 programs across the country as we speak. Truth be told, Carver-Columbus is loaded for the next 3 years with at least (6) D-1 recruits in each class. That number doesn’t include the HBCU and FBS sub-division recruits…

The Columbus referee’s have never been in favor of a Carver-Columbus team. That shows that you have no clue that Carver-Columbus has to play against the referee’s at their own home games. That is how NSWR won in Columbus last year 7-6… After the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter by I. Crowell was called back for the 12-6 lead.

Carver is a predominantly black school and they have never in their history had the referee’s call a game that was skewed in their favor. Their have been a few games that were called with a fair whistle… But, for the most part, Carver-Columbus has always had to play against the referee’s.

So, please… Spare us all with the referee excuses…

Chili Cheese,

I never heard of you before (being on the blogs) but congrats goes out to you. You all are finally Region Champions of Region 3-AAA. You all seem to do better in that Classification. When you all wre in Class AAAA you all could NEVER beat Bradwell Institute. Bradwell Institute whipped you all like you all stole something. Now you have Region 3-AAA Liberty County which is in the same County that Bradwell Institute is in. You all beat Liberty County this year and previous years I believe. Now you all are the number one seed. I am pulling for you all in Region 3-AAA to go far.
