My pal Chip Saye sent me a mock draw for the Class AAAAA playoffs today, and it’s pretty interesting.
Here are some highlights:
Lowndes is projected to play at Camden County in the second round, which is widely known by now. But the winner would face another juggernaut in the quaterfinals, probably either McEachern or the Region 7 champion (Peachtree Ridge or North Gwinnett).
How’s that for a stacked quarter of the draw?
No. 1 Grayson and No. 4 Newnan also share a quarter, and a coin flip would determine which would have home-field edge if they play.
The third quarter figures to have Northside, Woodstock and the Peachtree Ridge-North Gwinnett winner.
The lowest quarter has the fewest ‘big-name’ teams. Stephenson is the highest ranked and would be seeded to play the Region 6 champ, Roswell or Lassiter.
I’ll post the potential matchups in other classes later this week.
Here is AAAAA, and note that I’m not sure I agree with Chip that North Gwinnett and Lassiter are winning their regions. I might have to pick Peachtree Ridge and Roswell. But Chip is killing me in the predictions this season. I’ll stick to rankings.
Newton at Camden County*
East Coweta at Lowndes

Grayram I appreciate the respect you seem to be giving to Region 1AAAAA
in that North/South Shootout.
You have 10 teams involved and 4 of them are from 1AAAAA.
Seems you have 1AAAAA and Camden going up against all of the top seeds of every other region. An interesting thought. That in my opinion would be embarrasing to the North should the South win that one.

Slalom….Northside, Peachtree for sure. Strong possibility of Colquit and slight possibility of Warner and the Cats.
With your Carver/Lowndes comparison I have to say then that Tift must be better than Carver or Lowndes since they scored 13 on Northside.
I think we can both now agree that is all nonsense.
interesting?

draycoach, I have been to every charlton county game this year and I’ll agree they have a so so defense, however the point is how many teams can score 50? Nobody has done it to them yet this year. 48 is the best and in that game the score was 39-19 @ the half. It was a not so home game we played in Camden @ 6 on a Fri. as soon as we came out after the half we marched up and down the field and it went from 39-19 to 39-42 pretty fast. The fact is our 2 worse games of the season came to 2 teams desperate to beat us before we move back down to 1A. To those 2 teams it was their top goal of the season to beat charlton, call it their super bowl. So know what you’re talking about before you speak. Maybe the truth is you are a fan of one of those 2 teams.

Greetings AVIKINGFAN,
Yes this is going to be a serious fight to the finish. I haven’t anything like this as far as I can remember. The are some very very good teams going into the post season. Forget the Region. I don’t care who is Region Champions. When Round 1 of the playoffs begin, every team is going in 0-0. The winner stays, the loser goes home.
And again I will say this about Region 1-AAAAA. ENR is talking to soon about laying any claims to a Region Title. They still have a good Warner Robbins that they still have to play. This could very well be their upset this year. In addition, Colquitt County is still out there as well that Northside Warner Robbins still have to battle with.

As much as I love Camden, I think Lowndes is the team to beat. Even coach Heron stated his concern about playing lowndes in the 2nd round after what they did to Valdosta. But I’ll sure will be at the game when Lowndes comes to town pulling for my CATS!!!!! YEAH BABY!!!!
At least coach Heron does schedule pretty tough non region opponents.
Something interesting, from what history that I can dig up I dont believe that Camden has ever scored a point against Lowndes. I for one would like to see Camden play stronger teams during the regular season, I think it would make them better over all. Its hard to tell what you really have for the playoffs when the rest of the region is so weak.

spwhite – Camden beat Lowndes twice in 2003, the year Camden 1st won the state title. They came from behind on a long drive and beat Lowndes in the playoffs that year. Both games were at Camden. Seems like Camden may have beat Lowndes one other time. In 2005 Lowndes beat Camden 30-0 in the dome semis and then Lowndes beat Camden 10-0 in the 07 dome semis. This year’s game should really be a good one in the 2nd round, unless Colquitt beats Northside, creating a 3 way tie, which Lowndes would most likely win in the region 1-AAAAA tie breaker system. In that case, Northside most likely would go to Camden in the second round.

YO, Plowboy, Vikingdad, and Goober – Lowndes gave up 10 points to Northside and 6 to Colquitt (total 16). Northside gave up 7 to Lowndes. Colquitt gave up 31 to Lowndes. If Colquitt beats Northside and scores 10 points or more creating a three way tie, Lowndes wins the region. Cross your fingers guys and let’s pull for Colquitt. Maybe Warner Robins’ tough style of play and the cross town rivalry thing can take something out of Northside and make it a little easier for Colquitt the next week. We’ve still got a chance for number 1! Gooooo Lowndes Vikings!

Newton, I would not call last week a sub-par performance that we had against Stephenson. When Newton played Stephenson how many players on Stephenson’s side sat out? I think we got them at full-strength. Don’t get a sense of false hope with your games against Greenbrier and Douglas. Newton has a good team and it should be a great game. I predict UG wins this week and next….I hope anyway!

grayram: I like your idea for the Corky Kell Classic. However, they will play only 4 games & Brookwood is a given to play in the Classic every year (due to Dave Hunter’s involvement). McEachern will also be in the Classic automatically as a Cobb County representative.
SportsFan31313: I agree with you any team can be beaten in 1-AAAAA. However, Warner Robins is too one dimensional and if they can not run the ball, they are toast. I will also say that Colquitt County stands a better chance than Warner Robins to beat Northside. I also know that NSWR does not lose at the MAC in the regular season. (If I didn’t know that ENR would remind me of it) I will also say that streaks do come to an end as well. GT winning at FSU & UVA this year come to mind.

Grayram no there are no other teams. 1AAAAA and Camden are it in S. Ga.
That is what makes it tougher on the S.Ga. teams in the playoffs. They have to travel so far every week.
The reality is given the amount of AAAAA schools above Warner Robins the Atlanta area schools should dominate S. Georgia.
Next year it gets worse as possibly all 3 Warner Robins schools go back down to AAAA.
Also, the S. Georgia schools in AAAAA are generally smaller than our N.Ga. counter parts with the exception being Lowndes and Camden.
It will be interesting to see how realignment affects 1AAAAA and S. Ga. again next year.

All streaks are broken, and I believe that Colquitt will beat NSWR at the MAC. I have been saying that the Packers are a good and physical football team. I have compared this team to some of the Colquitt teams of the 90’s. They are physical and will just as soon punch you in the mouth. The coaching staff brings a swager to this team, and now they believe they are as good as anyone in the state.

Just a couple of observations (responses to previous posts)
The final pass in the NHS-Lowndes game was INCOMPLETE. There was a pass interference penalty, but the pass was not caught. Therefore, there was NO touchdown nullified.
Assuming NHS defeats WRHS and then loses to Colquitt, there would be a three way tie foor the region championship (thus Tri-Champs). The tie breaker on points would be used to decide seeding for the playoffs, and Lowndes would probably be number 1.
In spite of NHS win over Lowndes, I still think Lowndes is the better team and THE TEAM TO BEAT FOR THE STATE TITLE. However, as stated numerous times before, I am extremely proud of our very young Eagles team. I don’t think it will happen, but they could end the year wiith three straight loses and this year would still be successful. Next year promises to be even better.
It’s great to be a Northside Eagle.

Greetings SouthGaRules,
I you can’t under estimate Warner Robbins. Just when you do that, warner Robbins will beat you. Warner Robbins lost a few key games by penalties. I bet that Warner Robbins will give Northside Warner Robbins a run for their money this year, and may be the team to beat them Northside Warner Robbins in their Stadium thereby bringing a halt to their record of wins at home. This is a very good year in Region 1-AAAAA. Brace yourself for these last two weeks of regular season play in Region 1-AAAAA.

To AVikingFan and HomeFieldAdvantage: I don’t doubt you guys on the 1-5A tie-breaker, but there still seems to be some uncertainty about the precise method. So can you guys cite or reference the authoritative source of this info, and better yet, even document it or tell us where it is actually documented? I assume since each region has the right to determine their own tie-breaker methods, it must have been voted on and actually documented somewhere, maybe in the region secretary’s office. Just curious because the method does seem unusual, and it varies from the past method which called for best record against all class 5A competition.

Well I posted this comment on another site. But I see that it would better fit to post it here: Here is my First round Predictions:
At the beginning of the season, I predicted that Lowndes County will be the team to beat, and that no one could beat Lowndes County this year. I was proven wrong by Eagle Nations Rising. ( Boy Do I Dislike It Coming From Him) But this year in Class AAAAA just like it has already been commented on, In Class AAAAA it will be a serious battle / fight to the finish in the playoffs this year among Class AAAAA Teams.
Right now in Region 1-AAAAA, All I can say is WOW!!!!! It is to be expected as any team from that Region could make a run for the State Title. Right now, you have Northside Warner Robbins who is number one in the Region, very close by Lowndes County in second, In third you have Colquitt County who has also made a serious statement of not counting them out, and in Fourth you have Warner Robbins who has quietly won themselves into playoff contention this year. Those four teams alone can and probably will create Havoc in the playoffs. But here is the problem. The fourth seed could still be up for grabs as Warner Robbins has two tough final regular season games to play. That is Northside Warner Robbins and Lowndes County. If Warner Robbins by chance upsets Northside Warner Robbins, this can and will be very interesting unless Northside still remains in first as they have beaten Lowndes County in the regular season. If not, then Valdosta will have a chance to enter as the number 4 seed, if Warner Robbins drop their last two regular season games. Then Warner Robbins will be out of Playoff contention. This is very exciting as Region 1-AAAAA still has one or two more weeks to determine the 4th seed. You just never know in Region 1-AAAAA until the last game is played. This year in region 1-AAAAA, the Fat Lady wont sing until the last game more than likely.
Region 2-AAAAA you have in order of seeding, Stephenson, Union Grove, Martin Luther King, who are very dangerous this year, and are very capable of beating some top ranked teams in Class AAAAA. Then you have Newton who will probably be gone as soon as they enter.
Region 3-AAAAA you have Camden County who is Always making their mark for a Title, and can not be under estimated. The 2nd seed Windsor Forest of Savannah, who shockingly upset Bradwell Institute this year, 3rd seed Bradwell Institute who normally comes in 2nd in the Region behind Camden County, who are playing this year with a very young team to include 12 starters being injured in the regular season with 5 of the twelve being out for the season. I have never seen anything like this in high school football. That may answer the question as the reason why they (Bradwell Institute) were beaten this year by some non contender teams like Jenkins of Savannah, and Windsor Forest. The 4th seed is Beach of Savannah. As much as I am a Fan of Region 3-AAAAA (Bradwell Institute) I am realistic. Every school in this Region this year, I suspect to be one and done with exception to Camden County that may make it to round two of the Playoffs. But I believe that their run will come to a screeching halt in the 2nd round this year when, and if they face Lowndes County.
Region 4-AAAAA you have Newnan, and then everyone else. Same here. Just like Region 3-AAAAA all except for Newnan will be one and done.
Region 5-AAAAA you have McEachern, whom has played very well this year as the number one seed. But I put number the 2 seed Woodstock to go further than McEachern in the playoffs. Etowah, and East Paulding will be one, and done after playing those teams from Region 8-AAAAA.
Region 6-AAAAA you have Lassiter. They may get by in the first, and you also have Roswell who may also get by, but Walton and Milton, they may be exiting after the first round.
Region 7-AAAAA you have North Gwinette followed closely by the “Ridge” Peachtree Ridge. They will definitely advance to the 2nd round. Collins Hill, and Norcross will more than likely exit after the first round.
Region 8-AAAAA you have Grayson or as AVIKING FAN put it, “GREYSON”
who we all know, will have no problem advancing to the 2nd round. South Gwinette will advance as well, but for Dacula, and Brookwood, call it a day after the first round, and see ya next year in 2010.
So, there you have it after the first round. I will comment after that first round is over, and done with.

You may want to reconsider your East Paulding prediction…IF the playoffs started this week its Harrison NOT EP that is the #4 seed in 5A…for EAST to take the #4 seed Harrison has to lose to Marietta this week and then EP has to beat Cherokee…and if I am not mistaken EP would STILL need Harrison to lose to Etowah in the final game of the season…all this is because Harrison beat EP week before last.

YO, I caught the “kudos” to LaGrange. Udaman. Also I have been clear in my prediction that Lowndes is the most likely team to win AAAAA. As for Newnan, no argument their region is not as tough as Region 1. However, outside of Region 1, Region 4 stacks up pretty well against the rest of GHS football AAAAA regions.I realize you are still having nightmares of those little purple men who get “bigger abd bigger, along with one little purple man who is running around and through everybody on the field”. (I took the liberty to paraphrase one of your previous post.) But seriously, do you believe that Grayson is really that good? How about McKeachern? Camden County? Even Northside? Do you believe that on a neutral field Northside would stand a chance against Lowndes? Then there is P’Ridge and Newnan. The Cougars are for real my friend.

Sportsfan31313: I really like your breakdown of the AAAAA playoffs. However, I must respectfully disagree with some of your observations. I have more confidence in Valdosta beating Tift & Houston County than Warner Robins beating Northside & Lowndes. Even if Warner Robins wins 1 of the 2, they still lose the tiebreaker with Valdosta by Valdosta winning in their head to head matchup. In Region 7, Norcross has Collins Hill & Peachtree Ridge left. They currently have a 1 game lead over North Forsyth with 2 games to go. North Forsyth has an easier schedule & the probablility of winning both games. If they wind up tied, North Forsyth gets the #4 seed by virtue of beating Norcross. However, the results will be the same. The #4 seed in Region 7 will go down whoever it is.
BROOKWOOD MOM: Did I read this right? Brookwood rushed for MINUS 9 yards against Dacula & set passing records for yardage & completions!!
