Michael Carvell’s Video Blog: Who is the state’s top high school running back?

Chat with the AJC's Michael Carvell

Chat live on Fridays with the AJC's Michael Carvell

Georgia’s high schools have a heralded reputation for producing some of the nation’s top running backs every year.

This year’s crop is another strong one, led by Southwest DeKalb’s Ken Malcome and M.L. King’s Mack Brown. There’s also Grayson’s Ean Pemberton, Sandy Creek’s Rajon Neal and Charles Perkins of Collins Hill, among others.

Who is my pick for the state’s top running back? The biggest talent I have seen this year is the same guy I thought was No. 1 last year – ahead of other tremendous players such as UGA freshman Washaun Ealey. The player I mention in the video below is very rare in that he projects to play both tailback and fullback at college’s highest levels. And he’s darn good in high school this year, too.

Note: By popular demand, we’ve added McEachern’s Rajaan Bennett, Loganville’s Storm Johnson, and Stephenson’s Raymond Sanders to our short list.

Who is YOUR pick for the state’s top running back? Post your RB’s name below and why. And if we’re missing out on some great ones, then state your case.

There are many very good running backs. I think Mack Brown is much better than his showing so far but the offensive line isnt very good at MLK. Stephensen, Grayson, and North Clayton all have a very good running back.

Charles Perkins is gonna be very good at GT. Malcome will do as all good RBs do at UGA and fall short of expectations. When your fan base expects every new RB to be the next Herschel they get disappointed time after time. Newsflash people Herschel Walker could not even read, and now that is a requirement to attend college….

Seth Hill/SR.–Grovetown High; 1126 yards, 13 TD’s and is doing this in a first year program that has a very young O-Line. Seth is 5′11″ 187 lbs. and is a ligit zone type running back. Also a A+ kid with really good grades. Also posted similar numbers as a junior and has really improved his hands and also his blocking!

Every one under estimates Rajion Neal from Sandy Creek. This guy doesnt need alot of touches to ge a tremendous amount of production. He averages about 9 to 10 touches a game including kick off returns. He has almost a 1000 yards rushing with 21 td’s with not playing hardley in the second half. He has returned 3 ko returns for td’s of 98,97,and 79 yards and the teams will not kick to him.Look for some more BCS schools to start heating up recruiting again. This kid is really going to shine in the playoffs because teams are going to put 8,9,and 10 in the box and Sandy Creek is going to make adjustments and throw him the ball and man can this kid catch.Watch out and after the dust settles at the end of the season tell me who is the best.

Simply put the best running back in the state of Georgia is Clarence Jackson from North Clayton High School. Rajon Neal is a close second and then Mack Brown. I say Clarence because the young man can run inside/outside and the most impressive aspect of his game is his pass catching ability. He could easily line up at TE or WR. At 6′2 220 pounds he is a physical specimen with football skills to boot. His athletic ability in terms of coordination, speed, hands, and feet and most of all a competitive spirit makes him the best running back in the state.

Charles Perkins and Mack Brown are in the same boat, they are the bulk of the offense. Both Collins Hill and ML King’s OLines are not the greatest.

Charles Perkins 171 rushes 1,183yd 14TD 169ypg average (Has been held under 100yds twice-Dacula 75yds[63yd receiving], Peachtree Ridge 45yds[52yd receiving]- season high 303yds vs Parkview).

Perkins is a patient runner that hits the hole with speed and power. He also gets to the edge and get solid downfield blocking by the wideouts. Runs behind his pads, always falls forward and finishes his runs.

Mack Brown 103 rushes 667yds 6TD 111.16ypg average (held under 100yd once- vs SWD 76yds- season high is 138yds vs North Cobb)

Brown is a punishing runner that can move the pile with his power. Has good hands and speed and can line up in the slot. OLine is not the greatest but Brown’s vision and speed make up for it. Runs behind the pads very well.

This has just turned into “[Insert Your School's RB here] is the best in the state.” Pretty worthless way to do it if you ask me.

I’ve seen Rajaan Bennett, Ken Malcome, Mack Brown, and Raymond Sanders play this year. Bennett has looked the best, production wise, but I think Brown will make the best college back–if he gets on the field for Florida. Malcome is great in between the tackles, and Sanders will be no more than a situational guy in the SEC.

It’s almost impossible to name the true “best” one–all these guys can do different things well and play behind different O-Lines and with different offenses overall.

You can see on SCOUT.COM that MLK OFFENSE LINE open up some nice holes for Mack. @Jags…Take some of the emotion out of it.

I have all the respect for Sanders and would even agree he is underrated to degree. Yet I didn’t post Perkins numbers to throw stats around but to show how much he is depended upon. I saw Sanders (1st in person 4 on tape) and Perkins (3rd time) run in person last week. Stephenson has more weapons and overall talent than Collins Hill hands down, most noteably on the the OLine-which is where it starts. Perkins is all Collins Hill has that they truely use (thats another story). Sanders could have a lot more on 171 rushes/touches I would imagine. Also I take in to account the non-region schedule that Stephenson has played (2 games against 3A schools).

Now I’m pulling for Stephenson in the worst way (to shut some folks up around the state) but looking at what both of these backs provide to their respective teams I’ll take Perkins over Sanders by a slim margin-personally; professionally they both have the potential to be impact players at the collegiate level

Depends how define a great back……Look at Storm Johnson, at Buford AA he was all state now running at AAAA at Loganville…not as good. I like to define a great running back as one that a teams record hinges their success. Examples are Collins Hill with Perkins and Grayson with Pemberton. The nod goes to Pemberton in my book. Look at Grayson’s record before he came on the scene as a freshman. His size and stature at 5ft 4 inches and 160 pounds raises his teams spirit and will. If Ean can do it so can we attitude has taken Grayson to new heights. Some college is going to strike gold if they give him a chance. His heart and attitude make him the number 1 player not just running back. His 4,000 yards so far in his high school career in the highest classification in the state at his size……no question the best pound for pound player in the state!

I’d have to go with:

1. Franklin (Lowndes)
2. King (Colquitt)
3. Pemberton (Grayson)

Franklin and King play against the best defenses in the state, and Pemberton showed out against a very good Lowndes defense last year. The rest of these guys are good…but they pad their stats against mediocre competition.

Pound for pound, inch for inch the best back/player…Ean Pemberton with his 5ft 4 inch frame and 160 pounds has lifted Grayson to where they are at on offense. The team feeds off him because if little Ean can do it, so can they. True mark of a great player makes everyone around them better. Not sure how good Grayson would be without him and the 4,000 high school career yards he has so far.

To “TRUE BLUE” I was not making excuses for Mack Brown, Stephensen has an overall better team than MLK. Stephensen is not as dependent on Sanders as MLK is on Mack because their “team” is better. If Sanders was on MLK instead of Mack Brown, his stats would not be any better than Mack Browns. Word of advice, you might want to tone it down a tad with all the boasting. That one game does not make a season. Stephensen has a good team but until they beat the good teams in AAAAA that they normally lose to, you are setting yourself up for more Stephensen bashing on here.

@rwdekalb fan I Love Mack Brown but .But you are so wrong about being on a better team with better stats because boys from Avondale, Miller Grove , etc. have better or just as good stats. When there is not a much talent on the team you ususally have better stats because you dont have to share as much time. So I cant agree with the stats would be better We just dont know . And also Sanders have not just done this one game its just one game the World know about. Check him out.

But you are right no need to boast the season must be finished.

Please stop talking about the rest of MLk team as though they cant play because they can . We still have a lot of respect for those young men ,just enjoying the bragging right while we can.

There are a lot of great running backs in Newton Co. period! All of the high schools in that county have GREAT runningbacks. They range from Tre Sorrells (over 700yds rushing as a sophomore), to Akeem Hunt (Newton Co.), to Git Aikens (Eastside High..over 800 yds. rushing in 7 gms.). And these guys play in some pretty tough regions too. We just ask that you guys dont overlook our talent cause we’re all (Newton CO., Alcovy, and Eastside) playoff bound in all regions. Charles Perkins is hands down the best I have seen. No disrespect but his offensive line and offensive coordinator are not very good at all. I think have five plays that they run over and over again.. Trust me when I say it does not take a team much to prepare to stop him. Perkins is Collins Hill offence, he faces eight in the box the entire game because defensive coordinators know he is the only one on Collins Hill offense who can beat you and still his running yards and yards after the catch are the best.I can’t wait to see how he runs with consistently good blocking. This kid is going to be something special.

I. Crowell the junior running back from Caver-Columbus is the states best back. He had over 100 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on NORTHSIDE-WARNER ROBINS in Carver’s 21-12 loss in WARNER ROBINS!!!!! When a player of this caliber can get that type of production against one of the best defenses in the state… The proof is in the pudding… Most major recruiting publications already list him in the top 5 IN THE COUNTRY!!!! He has major college head coaches at every game looking at him. The 9 other D-1 prospects that we have already commited…. For this year…..

Teryan Rucker of Gainesville is the most underrated back in Georgia. He plays on a loaded team, so nobody pays attention to him. The only thing he lacks is home run speed, but he is fast enough. He is by far the most naturally gifted runner I’ve seen in Georgia for the 2010 class. He also has has good hands and could play slot receiver if need be, but his true skills should keep him at running back. Raymond Sanders and Storm Johnson are also good.

The Best Running back in Georgia? HMMM.. Well Me being a running back myself back in the day, I look for the complete package.. Running, Blocking, Recieving and game Changer. Now I haven’t explored all the running backs in the state because you have weaker regions and different classes these backs play in. I always look at the larger regions. It’s like saying Ray Rice was the best running in college playing at Rutgers when you had Adrian Peterson playing in a better division in the same year and better conference. (No disrespect towards those schools and any other High schools around). I must say Raymond Sanders from Stephesnon High School really displayed all the true essence which a running has to do. Breakaway speed, Break tackles, take on the blockers from a blitzing linebacker, catching a 10 yard screen turning into a game changing touchdown and finally Making defenders look stupid by breaking there ankles trying to tackle him with power in running through a tackler. While you look and the typical 6 foot back there are certain things Mack Brown you expect to do. When your 5′9 175 doing what Mr, Sanders is doing, is pretty special. I am not saying he’s the best in Georgia, but what I am saying from the display of what an all around running back displays on and off the field I cannot think of any one better.

OK “JAGS” I feel what you said about Mack, and Sanders is an awesome running back, I just think Stephensen needs to play better teams during the regular season, so fans can get a true gauge of how good Stephensen really is, and Sanders having a good game against an MLK team who truth be told, no one expected to be a “serious” contender or against those other teams Stephensen plays during the regular season just does not do it. Bottom line is they need to play a tougher regular season schedule so they are battle tested before the playoffs, and until Sanders has that same kind of game against a Lowndes, Northside, Grayson etc. the type teams most do believe to be “serious” contenders, its hard to tell if he is possibly the best or if Stephensen is battle tested to win it all.

DeeDawg

rwdekalbfan: So you are saying Stephenson beating two separate undefeated teams (#8 MLK & Union Grove) in consecutive weeks is not considered “tough enough”? Both those teams are loaded with D1 prospects and commits, and brought their A-games. Yet Stephenson prevailed by a combined score of 47-7. Keep in mind also that Stephenson has traveled to South GA and whupped then state champs Ware County two years in a row. I guess we’ll have to see if Stephenson is “battle tested” enough going into the playoffs. I say they are! Go Jags!!

Don’t know about necessarily the best, but Thomasville’s Jeffrey Dyson demands respect. Undersized at about 5′9 160 lbs, but he can fly with a 4.4 40 yd dash time and is as quick and elusive as they come. Kid is also very strong for his lack of size. Remember that name. The kid can play.

I enjoy all the comments. All these young men need to be applauded for there efforts, hard work, and solid play. The best running back will be the one when the game is on the line and on a key drive that can swing the game one way or another, then you will see who is the cream of the crop.. Enjoy the debate and we will see in the playoffs

I had been hearing bout this kid from Sandy Creek Rajion Neal.I went to watch him Fri night and i was blown away with this kid speed, power, footwork and body statue. He ran for 252 yards in just 3 quarters and 90 percent of his yards were after contact. You can tell the game has slowed down for this kid cause he does a great job on setting up his blockers. He also has excellent vison and balance and never cuts his leggs off.He already has over 1000 yards and 24 tds and has only played four qrts in one game and had more yhan 10 touches in just 4.This kid is big, fast and strong. He is the real deal.

Dadrian Smith of Mt. View high school in Lawrenceville. He finished the season with 31 td’s and OVER 2000 YARDS for the season(most td’s before second half of games). He’s a senior and never played before his senior year. He is playing against 5A divisions. Has anyone checked him out?

No Westminister HS running back within the school’s history accounted for a bigger percentage of his team’s offensive production than RD3 is doing in his junior year with ending the regular season with 1480 yards. That sounds like a SAT score. RD3 consistantly shreds defenses this 2009 footbal season averaging 6.4 yards per game; running his way to numerous player of the week honors and 7 regular season 100 plus yards games. While thrashing high powered Lovett, Abernathy finished with 269 rushing yards Strengths: RD3 has tremendous start-stop, change of pace & change of direction skills, like that of a Barry Sanders prototype. While consistantly running against eight-man fronts, RD3 makes averaging 6.4 per carry look simple and smooth. He is a solid slashing player that has low gravity balance that keeps defenders reaching, but missing most of the time. He is a patient runner, following his linemen until reaching a break of day. Each time he touches the ball, it is assumed and have been proven time and time again that scoring is inevidable. He is a game- changing, versitle athlete, clocking 40 times at the 4.4 level. While somewhat a undersized athlete, RD3 is considered to be a 2009 Super 6 elite junior RB in the state of Georgia and will comfortably be in the top tier nationally.
