The Georgia High School Football Daily’s Weekend Predictions: Who’s winning and losing in Week Nine

By CHIP SAYE
For the AJC

Hiram coach Andy Dorsey could have been speaking for a lot of teams when he told Georgia High School Football Daily earlier this week, “It’s the playoffs for us from here on out.”

What makes Hiram’s situation a little different was the second part of his statement. “We’re 7-0, but the odds are still way against us to get in the playoffs,” Dorsey said.

Hiram is in Division B of Region 7-AAAA, one of a handful around the state in which the schedule is heavily loaded at the back end, one in which all, or at least most, of the games among the top teams have yet to be played.

No. 9 Hiram plays tonight at home against No. 10 Hillgrove and then plays at Sprayberry next week (Sprayberry, the defending region champion, handed Hillgrove its first loss of the season last week). Win both, and the Hornets claim the subregion championship and the state playoff berth that goes with it. Lose both, and they must win a region play-in game against the No. 2 team from Division A just to make the state playoffs. A 7-0 start could disintegrate in a hurry into a season out of the playoffs.

But I don’t see that happening to Hiram. I do expect Hillgrove to bounce back from its loss to Sprayberry and beat the Hornets tonight, but I also expect to see Hiram in the state playoffs, one way or another.

Here are some other regions in which the top teams still have several games remaining against each other:

Region 6-AAAAA: Three weeks ago, Lassiter, Roswell, Walton and Milton were tied for first place. Milton has since fallen off with two losses, and Walton was sidetracked by Centennial last week. But Lassiter, Roswell and Walton all face each other in the final three weeks, beginning tonight with Lassiter at Walton. After watching Lassiter’s Hutson Mason pass for 545 yards last week, I don’t see Walton stopping the Trojans tonight. And if any of the top four teams falter, Kell and Centennial are lurking to take their playoff spot and spoil their season.

Region 6-AAAA: Stone Mountain, off to its best start since 2000, is 6-1 and needs just one more victory to clinch a playoff berth. Getting that won’t be easy, because the remaining schedule includes No. 7 Tucker tonight, a dangerous and unpredictable Chamblee team on Oct. 30 and No. 3 Southwest DeKalb on Nov. 6. I expect the Pirates to lose to Tucker and Southwest DeKalb but beat Chamblee and advance to the postseason.

Meanwhile, region co-leaders Marist and Southwest DeKalb meet tonight. Marist would all but wrap up the title with a win, but I’m going with Southwest DeKalb, which must turn around and play Tucker and Stone Mountain in the final two weeks before it can celebrate the title.

Region 8-AA: East Jackson, Jefferson and North Oconee are 7-0 and three games ahead of the fourth-place teams, so even a season-ending collapse won’t keep them out of the playoffs. But the hardest work of the season begins tonight, when North Oconee travels to East Jackson. Jefferson visits North Oconee next week, followed by East Jackson at Jefferson in the season finale. I look for East Jackson to beat North Oconee but for Jefferson to win the region championship.

Chip – w/all the heavyweights of Region 6-AAAA yet to play each other, who is your favorite for the crown?
I know you picked Lassiter over Walton, but the game is at Raider Valley where Walton has been quite successful over the past 10-12 yrs.
If Roswell & Walton both win this week, that scrambles things even more.

I think this region will come down to the final week, only after Roswell faces both Lassiter & Walton.

and, re the play-offs, is it essentially irrelevant who finishes #1 or #2 in this region, since either team would avoid North Gwinnett & P’tree Ridge in the 1st rnd?

Thoughts?

McEachern over Harrison @ McEachern…that SHOULD be right!!

EP over Kennesaw Mtn. @ Kennesaw Mtn…SHOULD also be OK IF EP doesn’t beat itself AGAIN!!!…Stay focused Raiders…NO fumbles!!!…PLAY 4 Quarters this game!!!

Hillgrove Over Hiram @ Hiram…Hmmm! Nope gotta go the other way here…Hiram is going to show what they are made of…like their Coach is quoted in the AJC…”It’s the playoffs from here out!”…Get em’ Hornets!!! 1st time REGION CHAMPS this year!!!

Stone Mountain
I told you last week that the AJC likes you, but not that much. The media is like a groupie. When you’re hot, they will ride your bandwagon. When you’re up against someone they like more, they will drop you like a bad habit. I hope the Pirates are fired up this week.

The prediction was predictable. Stone Mountain wasn’t even supposed to be 6-1 at this point. Tucker is the defending state champs in AAAA and they are riding last year’s success into this year, which is fine. They better not sleep on the Pirates because this ain’t 2008 and these Pirates are ALOT better than the previous version.

It’s gonna be a war at Adams Stadium Friday night!

I think all of these predictions are a bunch of crap. Starting with the preseason rankings. Stone Mountain was picked to be 8th in the Region. I see now that the so called experts are a bunch of guys and maybe gals that sit at home and play video game like Madden 99. How bout everyone keep their thoughts to themselves. I think that SWD is gonna get MOLLY-WHOOPED by Marist. If anyone noticed STONE MOUNTAIN scored more points against Marist than anyone else. And by the way STONE MOUNTAIN IS GONNA DESTROY THE STATE CHUMPS TUCKER. HOW BOUT THAT!!!!!!!! Well Chip, you have made BROOKWOOD MOM happy picking her Broncos, but evidently you did not consult ENR about the Colquitt County-Warner Robins tilt. ENR has proclaimed that WR VIOLATES Colquitt. I wonder if he means Colquitt is going to squeal like a pig after the game.

Sportsfan31313 – Chip’s kinda rough on yore teams this week, ain’t he?! here’s hoping he’s wrong with both! I think he kinda chickened out in the Roswell vs Milton and Lassiter vs walton games. Can’t believe he left those out of his picks.

I couldn’t help but smile when I saw his Colquitt/Warner Robins pick. EagleNationRising has already guaranteed a Warner Robins blowout. (Maybe he meant the bus would have one going to the game.) Chip picked Colquitt to win. This game has huge playoff importance for region 1-AAAAA.

What you got to say about the AJC and the GHSFBD now ENR? Yeah yeah its a conspiracy thing! NOT!

Decatur will win it’s HOMECOMING! We don’t lose to Avondale. Everyone can talk a big game for them, but that Bulldog Defense is better then theirs. They gave up 26 points to Westminster in the first half. We gave up only 5 in the first. They gave up 41 to Buford. We gave up 14 defensively, and the offense gave them the other 14. This week will be a big game for our fullback Quendarius Hall. He is averaging 110 yards a game and a score. We will make the playoffs pounding and passing the ball on that hard hitting undiscipline Avondale defense. Go Dawgs!!!!!

HomeFieldAdvantage and SouthGARules: I would happily put my record in big high school games in Georgia against the AJC and GHSF Daily staff. They are absolute frontrunners. They have clearly displayed that they have no clue about football outside of metro Atlanta.

What comspiracy? I am a little lost. A person is entitled to pick whoever they like. Just as you guys foolishly jumped upon the Lowndes County bandwagon when any logical person knew that Northside does not lose regular season games at McConnell-Talbert Stadium & Lowndes County rarely wins big road games in the regular season. I knew that. Therefore, I picked Northside over Lowndes County. You knew that and you picked Lowndes County. It is your choice. It is just a pick. Games are settled on the field, not on this board.

Warner Robins 28, Colquitt County 7. The Demons VIOLATE Colquitt County, who has displayed an inability to stop the wing T. Warner Robins will run wild against the Packers. OK, the AJC picked Colquitt County. So what! We could write a book about their horrid picks. They are going to ride the flavor of the week and sport their “I LOVE BALLARD” t-shirts with pride.

“Upset Alert” “Upset Alert” North Gwinnett has only played one Georgia program with a winning record this entire season. The combined record of NG’s Georgia opponents is 16-33. They have played the weakest in state schedule of any team in the top 10. They play at North Forsyth, who is peaking right now.

North Gwinnett 21, North Forsyth 17. Someone please put the Bulldog hype machine on alert.

Warner Robins 28, Colquitt County 7.

McEachern 35, Harrison 7

Hillgrove 35, Hiram 14

All Northside Eagle fans should be on “Awareness” this week as Northside travels to Tift County. Young teams always slip up, in means of underpreparing at some point in a season. Something tells me that this may be the weak that our 15 and 16 year olds learn that you have to bring it every week in Georgia. Northside wins but much, much closer than many poeple think.

When I mentioned “conspiracy” to Eaglenationrising I meant the AJC staff and GHSFBD folks seem to make predictions often opposite of ENR’s. And of course I said it in a joking manner. But today I read the Associate Press top 10 in our local mullet wrapper, and right there in the AAAAA top ten, (after numbers 1 thru 10) were “others receiving votes, which included Colquitt County. But, WARNER ROBINS apparently got NO votes. Still, self proclaimed expert ENR predicts Warner Robins will “violate” Colquitt in Moultrie. Let’s see, the AJC, the GHSFBD, the Associated Press say one thing and ENR says another. Yeah, sounds to me like a conspiracy! (take it easy ENR and keep your blood pressure down – I’m still joking!) But if WR beats Colquitt 28-7 I’ll buy two rounds when we all meet in Atlanta during the state title games.

ENR…..I think Harrison will score more than seven against the McEachern defense. I also think we can hold them to three or four scores. It should be a closer game than your prediction. I also agree with THE CANNON RULES!!!, I don’t see Hillgrove scoring 31 against a very good Hiram defense. That should be a great game to watch! Good luck to all.

I predict Colquitt will defeat Warner Robins Friday 14 to 10. Further, if things go like I think they will, this will earn Colquitt 3rd place in Region 1-AAAAA, leaving Valdosta and Warner Robins tied for 4th place. Valdosta won the head to head, so Valdosta wins 4th and WR switches to basketball after Lowndes beats them soundly in Martin Stadium in game 10.

EP wins this week, as will Bradwell Institute and Liberty County. Stephenson barely gets by a fired up Union Grove team. Roswell, the best Atlanta area team in 2007, can make a statement this week if they take care of Milton like I predict they will. Walton typically is big and tough but too slow to play with an athletic passing team like Lassiter, who should win Region 6-AAAAA. Woodstock continues to make ex-Valdosta coach Mike Obrien smile, and Lowndes does the impossible (at least according to eaglesnationrizing). The Vikings will go to Mcconnell (is it McDonald?) Talbot Stadium and win a ROAD game against a team from Warner Robins. Yeah I know that is surprising, but remember, they did it last year too. They beat the Demons last year on the ROAD at the MAC. (H-mmmm I thought they couldn’t do that.) How about that YO and Goober, and Lowndes Dad, is that true? Lowndes may just “Peachtree Ridged” (”Valdosta-ed”) Houston County or as ENR says, “violate them” in the MAC on the ROAD.

Parkview has a chance to climb back into 4th place by sitting at home this week. Etowah continues to nail down 3rd place in region 5. The best game in the state this week may be in Quitman, GA. (Fitzgerald vs Brooks county for ya’ll north of the macon dickens line (aka nat line).

As a Northside fan I dont mean to look past this game…but Warner Robins is next week. That is THE GAME. I just hope the players and coaches arent as foolish as me to already feel the hype the crosstown rivalry brings and look past Tift. As ENR pointed out, this is a young team and without solid prep, no win is given.

I havent missed but two Northside vs Warner Robins games since I first moved there when I was eight years old. Through college and living at other places in the south, I mark it on my calendar and make every effort to go back. That game is what made me a football fan…and today football is what I spend most of my time and money on. The feeling of that game with so much hatred between the two teams in front of standing room only crowds has always been one of my favorite feelings. If you ajc folks want to see what high school football can be like for a city, I highly recommend being in attendance.

I will be going back to see the game next week after I get back from traveling to Dallas to see the my Falcons play in the new Jerry Dome. I expect a great game in Dallas and back in Warner Robins. The Demons actually have me a little scared this year. They have been under the radar most of the season, and are a play or two away from being talked about around the top. They have shown they can blow the doors off of opponents, and I’m sure they would love nothing more than to spoil Northsides national rankings. Heaven knows I remember when it was us trying to knowck them off every year. I remember beating them when they were ranked #1 in the nation and Northside had no hope of winning. I think it was around 1989 (I was 9 I think). I think Northside went on to face them the next week in the playoffs and beat them again. I remember having a “Aint it nice to beat em twice” t-shirt. Oh the memories.

Anyway, I had no idea then that we would ever see a time when it was Northside who was consistently the title contender and Warner Robins who was always trying to play the role of spoiler. I cant wait! I just hope we dont slip up to Tift and take a little of that hype for that game away.

Walton will upset Lassiter tonight, & Roswell will pound Milton.

so…who is the 6-AAAAA favorite after that?

More importantly – outside of local bragging rights, does it really matter who finishes 1 & 2?
I bring this up b/c both teams would likely avoid either N. Gwinnett or P’tree Ridge in Rnd 1 of the playoffs.
After that, the 6-AAAAA teams will get smoked anyway.

despite their stud QB, I think Lassiter loses a close one at Walton.
the Raiders always play well at home, & Lassiter is their biggest rival.

also – Roswell crushes Milton & takes the lead in 6-AAAA.

regardless, the 6-AAAAA teams are going nowhere in the playoffs b/c they begin by playing the 7-AAAAA teams….North Gwinnett, P’tree Ridge & Collins Hill.
good luck.

I get a text from my daughter at Stone Mountain that Tucker vandalized the rock in front of the school. Don’t you just love high school rivalries? This game should be very heated. Just hope players do not let their emotions get the best of them and play good ole FOOTBALL. Should be a good one, not too far from the Buckhead area on Druid Hills Rd.
