Time to step up: SWD, Lassiter, Union Grove, Grady

A week ago, I called it a week of reckoning for Stephenson, M.L. King and Collins Hill.

This week, it’s Southwest DeKalb, Lassiter, Union Grove and Grady.

Lassiter might get extra motivation at not being ranked again in Class AAAAA this week despite M.L. King’s loss making room in the Top 10.

The spot went to Woodstock, a team with one loss. I’m wearing armor this week in anticipation of the criticism, although come to think of it, Lassiter doesn’t complain here as much as Walton and Roswell. Nothing wrong with complaining. Just an observation.  : )

Other thoughts …

Stephenson looked great last week. Top-flight defense, a top back in Raymond Sanders. I wondered as I walked out of Hallford Stadium how many times the best back in the state (if it’s Mack Brown) has played on a team that got shut out. Then I remembered Herschel Walker’s Johnson County team in 1979 was shut out by ECI but won a state title that year. Stephenson re-jumped McEachern in the rankings this week.

Some big games this week:

SWD vs. Marist

Stephenson vs. Union Grove

Congrats to Woodstock HS for breaking the top 10 in Class AAAAA. Coach O’Brien is a good coach and Woodstock HS is fortunate to have him. I know that Valdosta must be missing him right about now.

I can’t complain with Lassiter not being ranked (as much as I would LOVE to see them ranked). They turned out to have a back-loaded sched sicne pre-season it looked like Pope and Kell especially would be better. Will be a HUGE game at Walton, especially sicne they lost to Centennial and will want to make up for losing at Lassiter last year…a loss I know many people there couldn’t believe. Plus, I don’t mind them floating slightly under the radar.

Can you guys explain to me how a two loss Wilcox Co. team gets the nod over a one loss Treutlen team whose only loss came to #4 (#6 at the time) E.C.I. at E.C.I.? Johnson County has one loss, also to E.C.I. but at home and they stay in the top ten? Treutlen was number five at the time of their loss and dropped completely out of the rankings… Man you guys haven’t got a clue!

Lassiter deserves to be ranked. They have dominated this year. They will beat Walton this week and hopefully get some respect.

We (Roswell) do not care that we aren’t ranked because unlike college football, there is an actual playoff system where we can prove who we’re better than… one week at a time. As for David’s Treutlen argument, would that not make Holy Innocents’ better than Treutlen or Johnson County because their only loss was to #1 Wesleyan?

Its hard to imagine that Roswell, lassiter and walton have been left out of the top 10 rankings all year. Must be that all other regions are sooooo strong that our region is weak and is not deserving of even a 5-10 ranking for roswell. Dave is right, we will settle things in the playoffs. After milton this friday, Roswell has both walton and lassitter on the road to finish region play. We should handle walton in a close game; lassitter will be for the region championship on thier field. Should be a great finish…..guess we will just have to handle our business on the field. Go roswell !!!!

Yes we are – if we win our region we can’t play a top-5 team until the semifinals. We’re looking at mighty North Forsyth in round 1 and Brookwood/South Gwinnett in round 2 – two teams we’ve beat in the playoffs the last three years.

re: Treutlen & Wilcox … Not sure if I can justify Wilcox’s ranking purely on scores, but I’m certain that Wilcox is one of the best 10 teams in Class A when healthy, and they’re about to be healthy. And when that happens, I don’t want Wilcox to be unranked when they make the semifinals.

St. Pius 42, Carver 7
Grady 28, Carver 27

What I am to conclude from this? OK, that’s just one game.

St. Pius 40, Washington 14
Grady 12, Washington 7

I think I’m taking SPX in this one.

pridge for real, just because someones picking against your team you gotta be like that.. anyways we match up well against peachtree ridge this season. we have a balenced offense with both passing and running and our defense is tough. there isnt gonna be any offense from the pridge side because our front 4 are diesel.

So, why exactly did you not rank Lassiter? They probably have the best offense in the state, and their defense is certainly good enough to keep them undefeated. I’m trying to figure out how Woodstock’s one-loss season makes them a better team (in your opinion) than Lassiter’s no-loss season.

Hrmmm… ranking Woodstock!? I can see the argument, but you realize this poll will only incite the EP faithful for the next three weeks until the EP/Woodstock game.

I suspect that the Lassiter/Roswell faithful will not be happy either… but I like the Region 5-AAAAA bias thought. ;-)

OK. Even if you have not ranked Lassiter, it is worth noting that Lassiter set a new Georgia State record for 545 total passing yards on Friday Night. A powerful passing attack like that might give fits to some of the defenses of the teams that are ranked in the Top 10. It will be very interesting to see how Lassiter finishes out the season, and might be a ton of fun to watch who they upset in the playoffs.

So I guess Sprayberry will not get ranked until beat Hiram in a few weeks? Granted, we have two losses, but one was to AAAAA Lassiter (14-7) on a last second TD in our opening game. We should at least be ahead of Hilgrove (tenth) after handing them their first loss of the season, on their home turf at that, Friday night.

Etowah Fan…

Nope not this time…I am STILL waiting on this years EP team to show some heart and play a FULL 4 quarters of football. After the SPANKING they took against your Eagles and then BARELY beating Marietta AT HOME I thought they would step up and play a good game against a Harrison team they SHOULD HAVE BEAT!!!

Instead they spotted Harrison 2 TD’s in the 1st half, the 2nd one on a BONEHEADED play with seconds to go in the half that GAVE 7 points to Harrison…Even doing that all they needed to do was come out a take the 2nd half kickoff and score…NOT this years team!!!

Harrison came to play and hung in there all night to get a good win at “THE BONEYARD”…

As for the EP/Woodstock game in 3 weeks…it’s lost a LOT of the meaning the EP folks thought it would have for this years team…We MAY not beat Kennesaw Mtn. this week!!!

why is Hillgrove on the list after a loose like that and Alcovy not with a great game against North Clayton Mr. Holcomb.. it dosent matter though because the longer u wait to put us in the top 10 the sweeter it’ll be for us. we’ll be 8-1 when we meet a probaly 9-0 Griffin thats #1, and i dont care about us not making the playoffs last year because we’re only a 4 year old school with it’s 1st true senior class and thats why we’re at where we’re at..Sophmore phenom back Tre Sorrells had 178 on what was undefeated Dutchtown a coupl weeks ago and 186 on OLA this past week without 4th quarter play.. Mt. Zion is next and we know they’re as good as it gets in 4aaaa with only losing to powerhouses Griffin and North Clayton.

As a Grady Alumni.. and as a very big football fan, I have to say this week is going to be the only Test that Grady and ST. Pius will face all season, winner of this game will win thier division.. and a state championship.. GRADY should at least be ranked in the top ten, but no, the AJC is favoring those hillbilly schools like lagrange and Baldwin, while GRADY is UNDEFEATED!!

I will say this, Those Grey Knights are HUNGRY, while St. Pius is coasting… as a Football Vet, I know that the hungry teams usually upset those that are Coasting… I will be at the DOME for this game..

GO GRADY !!!!

I wonder what happened to Mays on friday night… I have been on here all year they have been complaining about not being ranked and that they were going to beat Banneker this year and win state and other things… They were up 7-0 at halftime and then Banneker exploded after the half… They have a pretty good defense… The two losses look bad on paper but I here there were a lot of turnovers in both games…

Todd, What is your honest assessment of Banneker and what is your assessment of the region they play in. 5-AAAA

Hillbilly schools? There are no hills in LaGrange or Milledgeville. Now Woodstock, that might be a hillbilly school. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

re: Sprayberry: The Jackets definitely have a case for a Top 10 ranking.

re: Camden vs. Roswell – Both teams are undefeated when not facing teams that are ranked No. 1 in their state. Roswell has not played a team that ranks in the top four of its region. Both are unproven as Top 10 teams this season, but I’d rather give the benefit of the doubt to a defending state champion that has finished in the Top 10 about 7 years in a row.

BO -

Look at the competion Camden played so far and honestly think, do you think Roswell would have beaten or even come close. I do not think so. Every week and year we go through the same thing, why Camden?? Until teams like Roswell go out and beat or play teams like Camden, Grayson, Lowdnes or teams outside the state, then you can complain, but until then, you will earn you respect in the playoffs.

I told everyone that Lassiter doesn’t complain much about football. Still not a word from the Trojans.

Let’s see what they think about this:

Lassiter’s marching band couldn’t carry Lowndes’ tuba!!

That ought to do it.
